Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Shelby Piper, Allegheny

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Forty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jake Fling, Wooster nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2016-17 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Wittenberg men’s golf team combined for 1,180 strokes at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills, Florida, to bring the Walnut and Bronze home to Springfield for the first time in history. NCAC member institutions have now collected 71 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2016-17 academic year, 182 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON IS THE UNANIMOUS PICK FOR THE 2018 NCAC CROWN Denison has been selected as the unanimous favorites for the North Coast Athletic Conference women’s championship based on preseason balloting by the league’s coaches. The Big Red, who are the two-time defending NCAC regular season champions, earned all nine first-place votes to top the poll with 81 points. Denison also captured the program’s fourth-straight NCAC Tournament Title and 12th overall last year after defeating Oberlin in the championship game. The Yeowomen, who posted their third-straight season of double-digit wins in 2017 and advanced to the tournament title game for the second time in the last three years was selected to finish second after totaling 59 points. Allegheny checked in at third with 58 points, followed by Wooster (49), Wittenberg (48), Kenyon (46), DePauw (32), Ohio Wesleyan (22) and Hiram (10). Denison, which enters the 2018 season ranked 24th in the IWLCA Preseason Poll, returns four of its top-five leading point producers from a year ago, led by sophomore Kiely Noonan (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley). Noonan, who collected Second-team All-NCAC and All-Tournament team honors as a freshman, recorded 48 goals and 11 assists for 59 total points in 2017. Seniors Claudia Rafi (Mason, OH/Ursuline Academy) (38g, 13a) and Leah Israel (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood) (31g, 11a), and junior Maddy Heher (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) (27g, 12a) join Noonan as key returners this year after combining for 191 total points. In all, the Big Red returns 269 of the team’s 396 total points, including 188 goals from 2017. Defensively, junior Jane Goodspeed (East Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids) returns after garnering First-team All-NCAC and First-team IWLCA All-Great Lakes honors for the second-straight year. Goodspeed, who led the Big Red in ground balls (45), draw controls (63) and caused turnovers (35), anchored the Big Red’s defensive unit that limited opponents to just 9.1 goals per game a year ago. Head coach Amanda Daniels returns to the sidelines for her fifth season to lead the Big Red this spring. Daniels’ first four years at Denison have resulted in four-straight NCAC Tournament championships, two conference championships, three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances and a 52-22 overall record
