Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Andrew Gold, DePauw

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fifty teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jessica Fontana, Hiram nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2017-18 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Denison men’s swimming and diving team won their fourth national title in program history after the Big Red accumulated 596.5 points over the course of the four days of action at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. NCAC member institutions have now collected 72 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2017-18 academic year, 217 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Kenyon............................................................... 19 first-place votes in () Four teams received first-place votes in the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Two-time defending conference champion Wittenberg received seven first-place votes and is the coaches’ choice to capture the title again. Wabash, DePauw, and Denison each received a first-place vote. The three teams combined for a 23-7 record a year ago and are poised to challenge for the top spot in 2018. After claiming its 15th NCAC Championship in 2017, WITTENBERG seeks its third consecutive conference title. The Tigers are ranked 14th in the D3football.com preseason poll after posting an undefeated regular season a year ago. The Tigers return offensive threats in the form of senior quarterback Jake Kennedy, and senior wide-outs Thaddeus Snodgrass, and Liam Duncan to the 2018 squad. Senior quarterback Kennedy returns as the signal-caller for the Tigers, having thrown for 43 touchdowns and more than 5,000 yards in the past two seasons. DeShawn Sarley also returns to action for the Tigers, as the senior running back carried the ball 152 times for Wittenberg before being injured in the final regular season contest. On the other side of the ball, Wittenberg looks to fill the void of 2017 NCAC Defensive Player of the Year Chandler Ferko, while leading tacklers Terrance Crowe and Jonathan Seay return at linebacker. Head Coach Joe Fincham enters his 23rd season as the Tiger’s head coach after winning his 200th career game in 2017. WABASH enters the 2018 season with one of the top running duos in Division III back intact. First Team All-NCAC running back Ike James led the conference in running yards with 1,311 in last year and ranked eighth in the nation with 20 rushing touchdowns. Fellow junior Isaac Avant ran for 591 yards a year ago, eighth-best in the conference. The two juniors helped the Little Giants finish 16th in the nation with an average of 249.9 rushing yards per game to go with 32 touchdowns for the season. Senior wide receivers Oliver Page and Ryan Thomas missed much of the 2017 season due to injuries, but are ready to return this year. Junior Ra’Shawn Jones, an All-America hurdler last year, caught 18 passes for 258 yards and two scores. Senior H-back Matt Penola added 19 receptions and a pair of touchdowns to the Wabash receiving numbers last year. Junior Jake Reid is expected to take over at quarterback after transferring to Wabash from Mount Union last spring. Senior and three-year starting linebacker Evan Hansen earned All-NCAC honors for the second time in his career after leading the Little Giants in tackles in 2017 with 78. Fellow senior Byshup Rhodes ranked second on the team with 37 stops to earn All-NCAC recognition, as well. DEPAUW returns 41 lettermen including 15 starters from last year’s 8-2 squad that tied for second in the NCAC standings. Ten starters return to a defense that ranked sixth in NCAA Division III in rushing defense (63.9 yards/game). All three defensive line starters return including ends Matt Mitsch and Nate Orrison as well as tackle Ashaun Miller. Miller earned first team all-NCAC honors a year ago and Orrison was a second team choice after recording a team-high 7.5 sacks.

All four linebackers are back including Harry Bell, Zach Williams, Matt Crupi and Chandler Nicholson. Crupi was DePauw’s leading tackler last year with 85 as well as 8.5 for loss, while Nicholson led with four interceptions. Both were named second team all-NCAC last year. Three secondary players return with safeties David Cory and Hunter Sego as well as corner back Brooks Hepp, who had a team-high 11 passes defended last year. Left tackle Nick LaChapelle is the lone player returning to the offensive line, while tailback Ramon Lopez and wide receiver Andy Hunt are back at their respective positions. In addition to being a second team all-NCAC receiver, Hunt was named a first team all-NCAC return specialist in 2017. Matt Labus started four games at quarterback and led the Tigers to a 4-0 record and a top 10 Division III scoring average at the time of 44.5 points per game before sustaining a season-ending injury. Sego is also is back as the team’s punter with Jake Tanner returning as the placekicker. Sego averaged 34.8 yards per boot and landed 15 inside the opponents’ 20. Tanner connected on 40-of-43 extra points and 6-of-8 field goals. DENISON is coming off a third consecutive season with seven or more wins. With 19 starters and 84 letter winners returning, ninth-year head coach Jack Hatem is hoping that 2018 will be a breakthrough campaign for the program. Last year, the Denison offense rushed for 2,328 yards and passed for 2,225 yards while setting a new program record for first downs. Seniors Canaan Gebele, Alex Minton, and David Weimar return to lead the offense. Gebele completed 64 percent of his passes and threw for 2,016 yards while rushing for 791 as a junior. In his first year with the Big Red in 2017, Minton became the 15th player in program history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. For Weimar, he led the team in receptions despite missing half of the season with an injury. He had 10 touchdown catches as a sophomore. All five starters in Frank Zoltan, Josh Blaz, Andrew Zellers, Jeremy Woelfer, and George Carson return on the offensive line for the Big Red. The defense returns six starters, including senior safety Ryan Zinkula, who had 65 tackles and two interceptions a season ago. He is a two-time all-conference honoree. OHIO WESLEYAN and head coach Tom Watts will look to veteran units on both sides of the line of scrimmage to return the Battling Bishops to championship contention in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Defensively, senior tackle David Praul and senior nose guard Christopher Rodriguez return in the interior line. At the ends, junior Kyle Hogan and sophomore Kor’Darius Melton each won D3football. com Team of the Week honors last season. At linebacker, seniors Jordan King, Cameron Smith, and Michael Smosny and sophomore Cody Streit are back. Senior Natrone Barnes, an All-NCAC pick in 2017, and sophomore Nick Sala took over starting spots at cornerback last season, and senior Sterling O’Hara also returns. Three of the Bishops’ top receivers are back in senior Deji Adebiyi and juniors Mher Tcholakian and Sasoun Tcholakian. Senior running back Jesse Beachy opened 2017 as a starter, and junior Curtis Duren also returns. At quarterback, senior Jordan Leach and junior Jax Harville will vie for the starting nod. Up front, sophomore tackle Bailey McCoy and senior tackle Austen Kimbro return, and junior Alex Chrustic is back at left guard. Junior Anthony Sanfillipo, who led the league in field goals last year, and sophomore Gabe Miller, who led the NCAC in kick return average, highlight the special teams. While WOOSTER will have a new signal-caller in 2018, the Fighting Scots remain poised to once again challenge for a top spot in the parity-filled NCAC. Wooster, coming off its first winning season since 2013, returns 17 starters, and every non-quarterback skill position student-athlete who contributed to the 28 offensive school records set or matched last fall is back in the fold.

2018 PREVIEW - Cont. Junior Nick Strausbaugh shattered the College’s receiving records with 1,315 yards and 17 touchdowns, with the latter stat matching the conference record, and he earned the NCAC’s Newcomer of the Year honor. Senior Antonio Bailey erupted for a career-high 835 rushing yards, averaged over 100 yards per game during the second half of the season, and earned his first all-conference honor. Up front, junior tight end Jacob Lewis emerged as one of the top receiving threats in the league. Defensively, rising junior D’Andre Brown turned in a career year with 47 tackles, and the all-conference honoree projects to anchor a defense that features nine returning starters. Seniors Marcus Bowers and Hunter Coia give the Scots plenty of experience as four-year key contributors, while in the backfield, rising sophomores Beau Greenwood and Cam Pollard bring plenty of highlight-reel playmaking capabilities to the table. With 18 starters returning to a team that has increased its win total in each of the past two seasons, ALLEGHENY looks to take the next step in climbing the conference ranks under third-year coach B.J. Hammer. Offensively, nine starters return to a unit that averaged 450 yards per game. Logan Lee is back for his fourth season under center, having set team records a season ago in completions (214), yards (3,002), and touchdowns (32). Four of his favorite targets return, headlined by junior Alex Victor, who emerged as one of the top playmakers in the region after hauling in 52 receptions for 1,037 yards and 17 touchdowns. A 2017 All-NCAC pick who ran for 944 yards and 10 touchdowns, senior Tyler Balla is back to anchor the ground game, while three two-year starters return on the line. Nine starters are also back on defense, highlighted by senior end Colten Buzard, who earned All-NCAC honors after setting a school record with 20.5 TFL’s, and tying the team mark with 12.0 sacks. Three-year starter Marcus Davenport is also back on the line, while sophomore safety Chase Balla returns after a rookie campaign in which he totaled 73 tackles and five pass break-ups en-route to allconference accolades. Jake Wilson, the program’s all-time leading kick returner, has graduated, but the special teams unit welcomes back kicker Zach Bednarowicz and punter Cody Wendt, while the younger Balla could be in line to take over returning duties after averaging 22.1 yards on 17 returns In 2017. OBERLIN returns a dynamic plethora of talent on the offensive end, headlined by junior quarterback Zach Taylor, who threw for 2,189 yards and 17 touchdowns and six more scores on the ground as he set a school record with 2,525 yards of total offense in 2017. A pair of runners will accompany Taylor in the backfield. Senior Chuck Williams will be joined by junior Melvin Briggs, who totaled 380 yards and three scores before having his season cut short due to injury. Oberlin is blessed with a talented and deep receiving corps that features big-play threats in seniors Robby Reinheimer and Ryan Gleeson. The duo combined for 11 touchdowns and 1,398 yards in 2017. The Yeomen also welcome the return of Jabari Clemons after he missed all of last season with an injury. The speedster will also bolster the Yeomen’s return units on special teams. Defensively, Oberlin is led by junior linebacker Von Wooding who is the top returning tackler in the NCAC after making 101 stops a season ago. Upfront, expect junior Justin Godfrey to build off his strong sophomore season that saw him finish with seven tackles for loss. Oberlin is experienced in the defensive backfield with twins Jabree and Jubreel Hason manning the corners with senior Devin Wilkins and sophomore Malachi Clemons providing help over the top. All-NCAC first-team placekicker Michael Leshchyshyn also returns to handle the kicking duties. The junior was 31-32 on PATs and went 8-of-9 on field goal attempts last season. Having lost just 12 letterwinners from a season ago, HIRAM will look to take another step in the right direction under the third year of head coach Henry Stanford. Experience leads the way on both sides

of the ball for the Terriers, who see 41 letterwinners and 21 starters return. The Terrier offense will need to fill the whole left by First-Team AllNCAC running back, Danny Robinson, but with the return of senior Isaiah Jones, Hiram will look to continue the success of their ground game. Senior Randy Tucker also returns for his final season and brings with him an experienced receiving corps. Last season, Tucker tied the Terrier single-season mark for touchdown passes with 17. Meanwhile, four different returning wideouts tallied multi-touchdown performances in 2017. Overall, the offense returns a majority of major players to a program that set a single-season record for points per game (28.3). Defensively, Hiram returns four of their top six tacklers from a year ago, including both defensive ends in Horace Johnson and Alex Meehan. Johnson led the team with 11.5 tackles for loss in 2017. KENYON entera the 2018 season facing the formidable task of restructuring an offense that returns just four starters. Two of those four, however, made huge contributions to a passing game that set nearly every Kenyon single-season passing record in 2017. Seventh-year Head Coach Chris Monfiletto will once again hand the keys to junior quarterback Thomas Merkle, who whipped up 2,922 passing yards and 22 touchdowns last season. Merkle lost two of his top three targets, but Ian Robertson returns to head up the receiving corps. Last year, Robertson had a breakout season that included 80 catches for 1,053 yards and 13 touchdowns. Linemen Chase Kirol and A.J. Brennan are the only other returning starters from an offense that averaged 25.3 points and 366.4 yards per game. Defensively, the Lords struggled in 2017, allowing opponents to average 45.4 points per game. Sam Dickey, Derek Martin, and Wyatt Medina return to the linebackers group. Combined, those three accounted for 110 tackles in 2017. D.J. Manley, who had two interceptions, and Michael Picone, who forced four fumbles, solidify the secondary along with Taaj Davis and Herbert Wakefield. Up front, the line gets a boost from the return of Trevor Brown, who recovered three fumbles, and Hayden Gaus, who logged 34 tackles.

Jake Kennedy, who threw for 2,674 yards and 24

touchdowns in 2017, seeks to lead Wittenberg to its third consecutive NCAC title this season.

DENISON UNIVERSITY Head Coach Jack Hatem

Outlook

Denison is coming off its third-straight season with seven or more wins. With 19 starters and 84 letter winners returning, ninth-year head coach Jack Hatem is hoping that 2018 will be a breakthrough campaign for Denison football.

Alma Mater Rio Grande ‘82 Record at DEN 48-32 (8 Years)

Overall Record 48-32 (8 Years) • 20th head coach in 124-year history of Denison football. • Guided the Big Red to at least seven wins in each of the past four seasons. • Named the 2016 NCAC Coach of the Year.

One thing that will help Gebele and company sleep soundly is the fact that all five starters in Frank Zoltan, Josh Blaz, Andrew Zellers, Jeremy Woelfer, and George Carson return on the offensive line for the Big Red. The defense returns six starters and will be looking to replace first-team All-NCAC defensive back, Alex Raynor. Senior safety Ryan Zinkula is back. He had 65 tackles and two interceptions a season ago. He is a two-time all-conference honoree.

Three secondary players return with safeties David Cory and Hunter Sego as well as corner back Brooks Hepp, who had a teamhigh 11 passes defended last year.

The Hiram College football team will look to take another step in the right direction under the third year of head coach Henry Stanford. Experience leads the way on both sides of the ball for the Terriers, who see 41 letterwinners and 21 starters return. The Terrier offense will need to fill the whole left by First-Team All-NCAC running back, Danny Robinson, but with the return of senior Isaiah Jones, Hiram will look to continue the success of their ground game.

The Lords enter the 2018 season facing the formidable task of restructuring an offense that returns just four starters.

While Wooster will have a new signalcaller in 2018, the Fighting Scots remain poised to once again challenge for a top spot in the parity-filled NCAC. Wooster, coming off its first winning season since 2013, returns 17 starters, and every non-quarterback skill position student-athlete who contributed to the 28 offensive school records set or matched last fall is back in the fold. Seniors Marcus Bowers and Hunter Coia give the Scots plenty of experience as fouryear key contributors, while in the backfield, rising sophomores Beau Greenwood and Cam Pollard bring plenty of highlight-reel playmaking capabilities to the table.
