Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Riley Culver, Wittenberg

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Thirty-nine teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jacob Zalenski, Kenyon nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2018-19 academic year. The NCAC earned another NCAA Division III swimming & diving championship last year as Denison claimed the men’s title for the fifth time in program history. Conference members have accumulated 73 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the 2018-19 academic year, 216 All-America or Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

Kenyon............................................................... 12 first-place votes in () Three teams received first-place votes in the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Defending co-champion, Wabash, received six first-place votes, capturing the top spot in the voting while Wittenberg (three) and Denison (one) also collected first-place votes. The three teams combined for a 26-5 record a year ago and are each poised to challenge for the top spot in 2019. WABASH looks to earn its first back-to-back NCAC crown since claiming consecutive titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008. The Little Giants, tied for the conference championship last season, return 15 starters from its 9-1 squad from 2018. Nine starters are back on the defensive side of the ball, including 2018 NCAC Newcomer of the Year Jose Franco. The sophomore cornerback will be joined by all-conference defensive starters Brandon Yeagy, Brock Heffron, Jake Page, Blair Brody, and Don Schuch. The Little Giants bring back a pair of all-conference running backs on offense in 2019. Isaac Avant ranked second in the NCAC and 25th in the nation with 1,179 rushing yards to earn first team all-conference honors last season. Ike James returns to the Wabash lineup from a knee injury that sidelined him last season. James led the conference and was 15th in the nation with 1,311 rushing yards as a first-team All-NCAC selection in 2017. Jake Slager, Connor Phelps, and Dane Smith return up front on the line for the Little Giants. Quarterback Jake Reid threw for 18 touchdowns and 1,859 yards in his first season as the starting quarterback. Two-time All-American hurdler Ra’Shawn Jones hauled in 18 passes for 401 yards and six TDs in 2018. WITTENBERG football heads into the season ranked 15th nationally in the 2019 D3football.com poll. The Tigers ended the 2018 campaign 9-1 overall and 8-1 in NCAC action, claiming a share of their 16th conference title. The Tigers posted threats from all angles on the offensive side of the ball, scoring just over 40 points per game while racking up over 430 yards per contest. Wittenberg was supported by a seven-man receiving core, with each receiver hauling in 10-plus receptions on the year. The Tigers look to replace quarterback Jake Kennedy from last season, as the two-time All-NCAC selection produced 32 touchdowns and over 2,800 yards of offense on the season with a completion rate of 66 percent. The Tigers return a stable of backs, which accounted for over 90 percent of the Wittenberg ground game in 2018. While the Tigers look to keep the offensive threat strong again in 2019, the defensive side of the ball allowed less than 125 yards on the ground in 2018. With the departure of two leading tacklers in Terrance Crowe and Michael Ford, Wittenberg will look to 2018 AP All-American Jonathan Seay to lead a new Tiger defensive core. DENISON is coming off its fourth-straight season with seven or more wins and the team’s first trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament since 1985. With 17 starters and 89 letter winners returning, 10th-year head coach Jack Hatem is hoping that the Big Red will build upon their success in 2019. Last year, the Denison offense rushed for 2,662 yards and passed for 2,338 yards while claiming a share of their first NCAC Championship since 1986. The offense will look to replace the 2018 Gagliardi Trophy

semifinalist in quarterback Canaan Gebele who left Denison as the program’s all-time leader in passing yards (7,608), completions (634), and touchdown passes (66) while ranking second in school history with 38 rushing touchdowns. He was also the third player in NCAC history to eclipse 10,000 yards of total offense in a career (10,039). Despite the loss of Gebele, the Big Red return an all-conference running back in senior Alex Minton who led the NCAC in rushing in 2018 with 1,368 yards and added 12 touchdowns. Eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards for the second-straight season, Minton became the first player in Denison history to record back-to-back 200-yard rushing games in wins over Ohio Wesleyan (Oct. 20) and Hiram (Oct. 27). He and fellow running back Hunter Biddle will be protected on the offensive line by All-NCAC returners in Frank Zoltan and Andrew Zellers. On defense, seniors Ben Cross, Chase Struewing, Nate Keirn, and Jordan Lobel all return on the defensive line for the Big Red that allowed only 121.1 rushing yards/game last season. Juniors TJ Gerhardt and Tristan Knoer will continue to lock down the linebacking corps for DU while Cory Swartzmiller and Michael Flanagan look to contain opposing air attacks in the Big Red secondary. DEPAUW returns 34 lettermen including 12 starters from last year’s 4-6 squad that tied for fifth in the North Coast standings. Five of the Tigers’ losses in 2018 came by eight or fewer points. Six starters return to an offense that scored 38 or more points on three occasions last year. Junior quarterback Chase Andries settled in as the starter and played in eight contests with a 121.95 efficiency rating. He threw for 1,140 yards while completing 54.1 percent of his passes including 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also topped the team in rushing yards with 200 while averaging 3.8 yards per scamper. Also returning to the starting lineup is tight end Dax Schnase as well as linemen Jared Penry, Ethan Greiner, Daniel Scotto and Nick LaChapelle. Will Harris leads the returning players with 34 receptions last year including three touchdowns. Defensively, DePauw was fifth in Division III against the run last year as it allowed opponents just 61.2 ground yards per contest. Four starters return to the unit, including linebacker Brody Gude as well as defensive backs Connor Perkins, Josh Pottebaum and Dylan Hyatt. Gude, an NCAC honorable mention selection in 2018, tops the returners with 49 tackles last year as well as 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. He and Hyatt each also intercepted a pair of passes in 2018. Returning to handle the punting duties is NCAC honorable mention pick Ty Johnson who averaged 37.6 yards per boot last season and landed 12 of 50 punts inside the opponent’s 20 with four kicks going for 50 or more yards. WOOSTER returns a plethora of talent on both sides of the ball with nine of the program’s 11 2018 All-NCAC honorees back in the fold, including all-region selections D’Andre Brown and Jacob Lewis. Offensively, rising sophomore Mateo Renteria emerged as one of the top rookie signal-callers within NCAA Div. III, and he’ll have his two favorite targets back in Lewis and senior Nick Strausbaugh, who combined as one of the top receiving duos within the NCAC. Up front, a pair of all-conference performers anchor the line in senior Adam Clark and junior Eli Lohrey. That experience should bode well for the running game, which will feature a new primary back with the graduation of four-year staple Antonio Bailey. Brown anchors a talented defense that was drastically improved in several key statistical categories, namely scoring and rushing defense. Senior Robert Alvarez could be the Scots’ go-to on the outside, while four-fifths of the Scots’ starting secondary from a season ago are back. That group includes junior Beau Greenwood, junior Mark Herron, and senior Christian Santos, who all earned all-conference certificates last year. Junior Cam Pollard, one of the top return specialists in the league, projects to line up at slot receiver after starting at corner for two seasons.

2019 PREVIEW - Cont. Head coach Tom Watts will look to veteran units on both sides of the line of scrimmage to help OHIO WESLEYAN return to championship contention in the North Coast Athletic Conference in 2019. Defensively, junior Kor’Darius Melton, a second-team All-NCAC pick last year, returns at one defensive end, along with senior Kyle Hogan, who won All-America honors as a special teams performer. Junior Cody Streit, who led the Bishops in tackles a year ago, is back at middle linebacker. At safety, seniors Ryan Rubel and Mario DeJoy as well as juniors Cole Nixon and Shane Quin each started games last season. Senior Nick Heidel opened 2018 as a starter at cornerback. The Bishops return 10 starters on offense. Senior Jax Harville returns at quarterback, with sophomore Jeremy Robinson also making two starts last season. Seniors Mher Tcholakian and Sasoun Tcholakian are the top returning receivers, as well as sophomore Kenny Streb. Fellow sophomore running back Martin Sesma led the team in rushing a year ago. The line returns intact with junior tackles Bailey McCoy and Nick Azusenis, juniors Logan Whalen-Henik and Nick Cooper at guard, and senior Alex Chrustic at center. Heidel also led the NCAC in punting last season, while junior Gabe Miller won all-conference honors as a return specialist. With a new coaching staff in place, led by veteran coach Rich Nagy in his first season, the ALLEGHENY Gators will look to continue the upward momentum of the last few seasons in 2019 and expand upon last year’s six-win campaign and fourth-place league finish. Returning are three All-NCAC selections, including the reigning Special Teams Player of the Year in junior Chase Balla and a two-time firstteam performer in senior wide receiver Alex Victor. Senior secondteam All-NCAC offensive lineman Rafael Balanquet returns to anchor an offensive line unit that returns multiple starters. Victor, a former Sports Illustrated ‘Faces in the Crowd’ designee, holds the Allegheny career records for receiving yards (2,611) and receiving touchdowns (30) and eyes the program’s career receptions mark heading into his senior campaign (enters with 143, record is 167). Balla also starred for the Gators defensively, as his 8.5 sacks led the squad a season ago and his 9.0 tackles for loss are the most among returners. Senior Kyle McGee was Allegheny’s leading tackler a year ago with 66 stops and returns after producing 8.5 TFL and two recovered fumbles a season ago. OBERLIN will rely on its experienced defense to lead the way in 2019. The Yeomen return nine starters on that side of the ball, headlined by the senior linebacking core of Von Wooding and Devin White. The duo finished first and third in the conference in tackling a season ago as Wooding averaged 10.6 stops per game while White secured 9.6 tackles per battle to go along with a league-leading 73 solo takedowns. The senior twin-brother tandem of Jubree and Jubreel Hason man the corners as the duo combined for 106 tackles, 19 pass break-ups, an interception and two fumble recoveries in 2018. Senior captain Justin Godfrey is the leader of the defensive line and will look to be a key run-stopper and pass rusher this year after registering 67 tackles and four sacks as a junior. Oberlin fans know it will be up to record-breaking senior quarterback Zach Taylor to steer the ship up stream in the NCAC standings. A 2018 honorable-mention selection, Taylor threw for 18 touchdowns and 2,169 yards last year. The school’s all-time performer in total offense with 7,282 yards, he needs just 779 yards to surpass Greg Mangan (7,002 yards) as Oberlin’s all-time passing leader. However, Taylor lost his top three pass catchers from last year due to gradation, so it will be interesting to see who emerges as his favorite target as the season progresses. Taylor will be blessed with a strong running back corps that features senior Melvin Briggs, who averaged 8.6 yards per carry and scored six touchdowns in 2018. Sophomore Kobe Brooks missed nearly all of last season but should be back to see significant touches for the Yeomen as well. The HIRAM football team will look to take another step in the right direction under fourth-year head coach Henry Stanford. Experience

leads the way on both sides of the ball for the Terriers, who see 31 letterwinners and 17 starters return. The Terriers return a trio of experienced wide receivers including senior Jaris Foreman as well as juniors Tahj Lorthridge and Moe Yarbrough. Foreman led Hiram with 496 receiving yards in 2018, catching 36 balls for an average of 13.8 yards. Lorthridge compiled 335 yards and led the team with six touchdown catches. On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Horace Johnson led the team with 83 tackles, 6.5 being for loss, last season. He also had four sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Junior linebackers Christopher Biddy and Tyler Swearingen also return as starters at the position. Hiram opens the season against Marietta on Sept. 8 before kicking off the conference portion of the schedule on Sept. 15 against Wittenberg. Record-setting KENYON quarterback Thomas Merkle returns for his senior season, one that will have an entirely new look and feel. He’ll be joined by just five other returning offensive starters and he, as well as the rest of the team, will be directed by a new coaching staff. James Rosenbury, a former assistant at Macalester College, was hired in April to take over the Kenyon program. He brought with him Andy Allison, who takes on offensive coordinator duties. Ian Good, a member of the previous Kenyon coaching staff, was promoted to defensive coordinator. While the program hits the reset button, Merkle becomes the centerpiece of the revival. In his previous three seasons combined, he set Kenyon career records for completions (850) and passing yards (8,248). Junior Justin Bosch is the top returning receiver and Merkle can be confident in his line, which returns seniors Chase Kirol and Andrew Zaiser, as well as sophomore Ben Casey. Defensively, the Lords return eight starters, so there’s a solid base for continued improvement. The heart of the unit will be the linebacker duo of senior Sam Dickey and junior Michael Picone. Dickey led the team with 101 tackles a season ago, while Picone racked up 56 takedowns. Playing on the edge, junior Tom Zaleksi returns after piling up 65 tackles in 2018. The senior front line of Trevor Brown, Zavier Chisolm Hensley and Sam Becker should give the Lords a boost, while juniors Chris Nehasil and Niall Regan fortify the secondary.

Alex Minton, who led the NCAC in rushing yards (1,368), tries to lead Denison to back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances.

Last year, the Denison offense rushed for 2,662 yards and passed for 2,338 yards while claiming a share of their first NCAC Championship since 1986. The offense will look to replace the 2018 Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist in quarterback Canaan Gebele who left Denison as the program’s all-time leader in passing yards (7,608), completions (634), and touchdown passes (66) while ranking second in school history with 38 rushing touchdowns. He was also the third player in NCAC history to eclipse 10,000 yards of total offense in a career (10,039).

Overall Record 56-35 (9 Years) • 20th head coach in 125-year history of Denison football. • Guided the Big Red to at least seven wins in each of the past five seasons. • 2018 NCAA Playoffs appearance.

While the program hits the reset button, Merkle becomes the centerpiece of the revival. In his previous three seasons combined, he set Kenyon career records for completions (850) and passing yards (8,248).

L, 10-43 L, 24-35 L, 14-47 L, 3-45

L, 7-49 L, 24-28 L, 10-54 L, 0-41

Defensively, the Lords return eight starters, so there’s a solid base for continued improvement. The heart of the unit will be the linebacker duo of senior Sam Dickey and junior Michael Picone. Dickey led the team with 101 tackles a season ago, while Picone racked up 56 takedowns.

L, 6-38 L, 7-61

Playing on the edge, junior Tom Zaleksi returns after piling up 65 tackles in 2018. The senior front line of Trevor Brown, Zavier Chisolm Hensley and Sam Becker should give the Lords a boost, while juniors Chris Nehasil and Niall Regan fortify the secondary.

The senior twin-brother tandem of Jubree and Jubreel Hason man the corners as the duo combined for 106 tackles, 19 pass breakups, an interception and two fumble recoveries in 2018. Senior captain Justin Godfrey is the leader of the defensive line and will look to be a key run-stopper and pass rusher this year after registering 67 tackles and four sacks as a junior. Oberlin fans know it will be up to recordbreaking senior quarterback Zach Taylor to steer the ship up stream in the NCAC standings.

Wittenberg football heads into the season ranked 15th nationally in the 2019 D3football. com poll. The Tigers ended the 2018 campaign 9-1 overall and 8-1 in NCAC action, claiming a share of their 16th conference title.

Alma Mater Ohio '88 Record at WIT 210-45 (23 years) Overall Record 210-45 (23 years) • Fifth head coach at Wittenberg since 1955. • Captured 14 NCAC titles (1997-01, ‘06, 09-10, 12-14, 16-18) and has guided the Tigers to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 13 of his 23 seasons at the helm. • 10-time NCAC Coach of the Year and two-time AFCA region coach of the year.

With the departure of two leading tacklers in Terrance Crowe and Michael Ford, Wittenberg will look to 2018 AP AllAmerican Jonathan Seay to lead a new Tiger defensive core.

Wooster returns a plethora of talent on both sides of the ball with nine of the program’s 11 2018 All-NCAC honorees back in the fold, including all-region selections D’Andre Brown and Jacob Lewis. Offensively, rising sophomore Mateo Renteria emerged as one of the top rookie signal-callers within NCAA Division III, and he’ll have his two favorite targets back in Lewis and senior Nick Strausbaugh, who combined as one of the top receiving duos within the NCAC. That group includes junior Beau Greenwood, junior Mark Herron, and senior Christian Santos, who all earned allconference certificates last year. Junior Cam Pollard, one of the top return specialists in the league, projects to line up at slot receiver after starting at corner for two seasons.

2018 SEASON REVIEW Denison, Wabash and Wittenberg were all

crowned NCAC champions after compiling 8-1 conference records during the 2018 season. Denison senior quarterback Canaan Gebele was the third individual at DU to earn the Mike Gregory Award as the NCAC’s Offensive Player of the Year following former Big Red studentathletes DuShawn Brown (2014) and Chris Spriggs (1985 & 1986). He is the third player in NCAC history to surpass 10,000 yards of total offense in his career after compiling 2,085 yards in 2018. The Big Red’s signal caller tossed two or more touchdown passes on nine different occasions last season and three or more touchdowns in four games including two NCAC games in which he threw four touchdowns. Wittenberg’s Jonathan Seay was the 11th Tiger in program history to earn the Hank Critchfield Award. He and his teammates allowed just 231 points through 10 games and were among the top defensive squads in the conference with six defensive touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Wabash head coach Don Morel, in his third season at the helm of the Little Giants, was named the NCAC Football Coach of the Year for the first time in his career after guiding his team to a near-perfect 9-1 record during the regular season. Allegheny freshman Chase Balla was selected as the league’s top special teams player after he played a role in establishing field position for a Gators squad that posted its highest winning percentage in NCAC games since 2010 with a conference record of 6-3 (.667). The sophomore totaled 476 yards off of 17 kick returns for an average of 28 yards per return. Wabash freshman defensive back Jose Franco was named the NCAC’s Newcomer of the Year as the top player in the league in his first year of collegiate competition in the sport of football. The rookie totaled 54 tackles (42 solo, 12 asst.) with eight broken up passes, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
