Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.
Andrew Gold, DePauw

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.
Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fifty teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jessica Fontana, Hiram nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2017-18 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Denison men’s swimming and diving team won their fourth national title in program history after the Big Red accumulated 596.5 points over the course of the four days of action at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. NCAC member institutions have now collected 72 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2017-18 academic year, 217 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON TABBED FIRST IN NCAC SOFTBALL PRESEASON POLL CLEVELAND, OH -- The North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) softball coaches have selected Denison as the favorite based on voting for the annual preseason poll.
The Big Red were selected to finish first after collecting three first-place votes and 74 points overall. DePauw, who has won back-toback NCAC Tournament titles, was tabbed second with four first-place votes and 73 total points. Wittenberg, who won back-to-back NCAC Championships in 2017 and 2018, was slotted third, picking up one first-place vote and 60 points overall. Allegheny (52) received the remaining first place vote for fourth while Ohio Wesleyan (45) rounded out the top five. Wooster (39), Kenyon (24), Hiram (19) and Oberlin (19) completed the nine-team field. Denison returns infielder Emilie Fisher (Oregonia, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) who was tabbed an All-NCAC First-Team honoree last season. Pitcher Colleen Hoffman (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) is back for her senior season after earning All-NCAC Second-Team honors in 2018. Outfielder Laura Bagan (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and catcher Lindsey Clemson (Canton, Ohio/ Jackson) also return to the diamond after All-NCAC performances last season. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, five different teams have claimed conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, ‘06, ‘07, 2009-11), while Allegheny (1998, ‘99, 2004, ‘08, ‘12) and DePauw (2013-16) have each captured five. Ohio Wesleyan (‘04, ‘05, ‘10) and Wittenberg (‘00, ‘17, ‘18) each have three. The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned six tournament titles (‘01, ‘02, ‘06, ‘08, ‘10, ‘12), followed by Allegheny (‘04, ‘05, ‘07, ‘13) and DePauw (‘14, ‘15, ‘17, ‘18) with four while Hiram (‘09, ‘11) and Wittenberg (‘03, ‘16) each have two. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
