Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 286 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

Andrew Gold, DePauw

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose.

Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Fifty teams from all 23 North Coast sports and Jessica Fontana, Hiram nine of the 10 members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2017-18 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III national championship to its list last year as the Denison men’s swimming and diving team won their fourth national title in program history after the Big Red accumulated 596.5 points over the course of the four days of action at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. NCAC member institutions have now collected 72 national team championships since the conference was founded in February of 1983. In the 2017-18 academic year, 217 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON TOPS NCAC WOMEN’S LACROSSE COACHES’ POLL CLEVELAND, Ohio – Denison emerged as the favorite in the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Women’s Lacrosse poll, based on balloting of the conference coaches. The Big Red, who captured the program’s fifth-straight NCAC Tournament title and 13th overall last year earned eight of the nine first-place votes for 79 points. Wooster, which advanced to the conference tournament title game for the first time since 2013, was selected to finish second after totaling 65 points. Oberlin was predicted third, picking up the remaining first-place vote and totaling 56 points. Kenyon was tabbed fourth with 55 points while Allegheny was fifth, just one point behind the Ladies (54). Wittenberg (40), Ohio Wesleyan (24), DePauw (23) and Hiram (9) rounded out the nine-team field. The Denison offense returns junior attacker Kiely Noonan (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) who was selected to the All-NCAC First Team in 2018. The Big Red also return the 2018 NCAC Defensive Player of the Year, senior Jane Goodspeed (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), who is a three-time All-NCAC First-Team honoree. Head coach Amanda Daniels returns for her sixth season at Denison after guiding the Big Red to five-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, three North Coast Athletic Conference Championships and five NCAC Tournament titles. Denison enters the 2019 season ranked No. 25 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) preseason coaches’ poll. Denison leads all NCAC squads with 20 conference championships in 34 seasons (1985-94, ‘96 ,1999-01, ’06, 2011-12 and 201618). Wooster has collected six conference titles (2002-04, ‘07, 2009-10), while Oberlin has earned three (1995, 1997-98), Ohio Wesleyan (2005 and ‘08) and Wittenberg (2014-15) each have garnered two and Kenyon (2013) owns one league crown.
