Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 62 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

2011 NCAC Field Hockey Preview The North Coast Athletic Conference begins its 28th season of competition in field hockey this fall. For the first time in conference history, the NCAC will see eight teams compete for the field hockey regular season title as its newest member, DePauw University, sponsors a varsity field hockey squad. DENISON will bring a young, but experienced squad into the 2011 season. The Big Red will have just two seniors on the roster this season -- Caroline Kesper (Richmond, VA/St. Catherine’s) and Kelsey Flowers (Darien, CT/Darien) -- to go along with nine juniors, 11 sophomores and their incoming freshmen class. Junior Catie Merrick (Owings Mills, MD/Garrison Forest) returns as the team’s leading scorer from a year ago after tallying 44 total points (21g, 2a). DEPAUW enters its first year of competition in the NCAC fresh off a 13-7 record and a second-place finish in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in 2010. Junior Margaret Ellis (St. Louis, MO/Whitfield) returns as the Tigers’ leading scorer from a year ago after finishing the season with 24 goals and three assists for 51 total points. Leading the Tigers at the helm for the fifth consecutive season will be head coach Gina Preston Wills. EARLHAM will look to rebound from a 2-15 campaign in 2010. The Quakers will bring back nearly their entire squad from last season as they lost just one player to graduation. Junior goalie Emma Treece (Kettering, OH/Kettering Fairmont) will again look to bolster the Quaker defensive unit after leading the NCAC in saves in 2010 with 265. KENYON enters the 2011 season looking to get back to the top of the NCAC standings after finishing third a year ago with a record of 8-4 in conference play. Although the Ladies lost four seniors to graduation in 2010, sophomore Sydney Carney-Knisley (South Burlington, VT/Rice Memorial) returns to the net in 2011 after she tied for the league lead in shutouts a year ago with five.

OBERLIN opens the 2011 season with one of the youngest rosters in the NCAC as the Yeowomen will carry just two seniors on the squad, including Emily Whitaker (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial), who led Oberlin with 35 points (15g, 5a) a year ago. OHIO WESLEYAN brings numerous experienced players into the 2011 season who will look to take over the scoring responsibilties for the Battling Bishops after they lost 2010’s leading scorer to graduation. Six returning players tallied at least five points or more for OWU last season, including junior Calina Hilyard (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) who was the team’s second leading scorer with 14 points (7g, 0a). WITTENBERG will look to defend its 2010 NCAC championship and make a return trip to the NCAC Tournament championship game this season. Senior Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, MO/Ladue) is the team’s leading returning scorer after totalling 33 points (14g, 5a) a year ago. Senior goalie Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids) is also back in uniform for the Tigers this season. She led the NCAC with a 0.88 Goals Against Average in 2010. After finishing the 2010 regular season with a mark of 11-1 in conference play the Tigers defeated Denison, 3-2, in double overtime of the NCAC tournament semifinals, before falling to Wooster, 4-3, in the championship game. WOOSTER anticipates another successful campaign in 2011 after winning the 2010 NCAC Tournament championship and competing in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. The Fighting Scots did suffer a huge loss due to graduation last spring but will rely on numerous returners to fill that void, including junior Claire Nelson-Johnson (Wilmette, IL/Loyola Academy) who was fourth on the squad in poinst last season with 20 after netting 10 goals. Junior goalie Liz Plumley (Crestwood, KY/North Oldham) returns to the nets this season after allowing 30 goals in 1468:29 minutes of action last fall to compile a 1.43 GAA.
