Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 62 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WITTENBERG TOPS PRESEASON POLL AS NORTH COAST PREPARES FOR 28TH VOLLEYBALL SEASON CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Wittenberg University emerged as the preseason favorite in balloting by North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball coaches in the 2011 preseason poll. The Tigers, who captured a share of their third straight NCAC title last season after going 13-1 in league play, earned eight of a possible nine first-place votes from the league coaches to total 80 points. Wittenberg finished ahead of 2010 co-NCAC champion Hiram by nine points. The Terriers, who captured the final first-place vote, finished with 71 points in the poll. Wooster (58) tallied the next higest point total, while NCAC newcomer DePauw was projected to finish fourth with 56 points. Denison placed fifth in the preseason poll with 43 points, while Kenyon (33), Allegheny (32), Oberlin (16) and Ohio Wesleyan (16) rounded out positions six through nine. Wittenberg will once again be under the direction of ninth-year head coach Paco Labrador. In his eight seasons at the helm of the Tigers program, Labrador has compiled an overall record of 259-38. After going 13-1 in league play last season, the Tigers have now won an astonishing 141 of their last 143 NCAC matches. Wittenberg returns seven seniors from last year’s squad that finished with an overall record of 32-3 and just one victory shy of advancing out of the regional round of the national tournament. The starting line-up will be bolsterd by a pair of 2010 All-Great Lakes Region middle hitters in seniors Miranda Sagle (Springfield, OH/Shawnee) and Katie Sumner (Dublin, OH/Watterson). Sagle was the Tigers most dominant hitter as she broke the school record for hitting percentage after connecting on 207 kills in 404 attempts (.416), while Sumner was also dominant on the attack with a .387 hitting percentage (220-of-468). Junior libero Christina Gilene (Milford, OH/ McNicholas) will lead the defensive looking to surpass the 1,000-dig mark. She enters the season with 981 career digs after leading the team with 551 in 2010. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
