Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together
a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 62 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DENISON PROJECTED TO FINISH FIRST AS NCAC PREPARES FOR 28TH WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Denison University emerged as the favorite in the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference women’s soccer preseason poll based on balloting from eight of the nine league coaches. The Big Red, who are the defending NCAC tournament champions, earned six of a possible eight first-place votes from league coaches to compile 68 points. Allegheny collected the second highest point total with 59, including one first-place vote, while defending NCAC champion Wooster rounded out the top three with 52 points, including the final first-place vote. NCAC newcomer DePauw placed fourth with 47 points, while Wittenberg rounded out the top five with 46 points. Rounding out places six through nine in the poll were Kenyon (33), Ohio Wesleyan (28), Hiram (17) and Oberlin (10). Denison, which is 193-57-20 (.752) during the 14-year tenure of head coach Gail Murphy, returns 19 letterwinners and six starters from last year’s squad that finished the season with an overall record of 16-5-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Senior forward Tory Danis (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) is the top returning offensive threat for the Big Red after tallying 15 points (5g, 5a) in 2010, while sophomore goalie Andrea Karl (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty) will again look to bolster Denison’s defensive unit after allowing 21 goals in 2233:52 minutes of action in 2010 for a Goals Against Average of 0.85. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
