NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

ALLEGHENY COLLEGE * DENISON UNIVERSITY * DEPAUW UNIVERSITY * HIRAM COLLEGE * KENYON COLLEGE OBERLIN COLLEGE * OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY * WABASH COLLEGE * WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY * COLLEGE OF WOOSTER

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 64 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WABASH VOTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NORTH COAST BASEBALL SEASON CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have selected Wabash as the preseason favorite through balloting in the annual preseason coaches' poll. The Little Giants, who captured their first-ever NCAC championship in 2011, earned 91 total points and four of ten available first-place votes. Wooster, last year's NCAC Tournament No. 1 seed, is projected to finish second in the conference this season after collecting 88 total points and four of ten available first-place votes. Ohio Wesleyan finished third in the voting with 81 points and the last two possible first-place votes, while DePauw (64) and Allegheny (62) round out the top five. Wittenberg collected 49 points and finished in sixth-place followed by Denison (47), Kenyon (32), Oberlin (25) and Hiram (11) . Wabash will rely on a core of returning starters with a plethora of experience to lead the way in 2012. The Little Giants return five players who garnered All-NCAC honors last season, headlined by senior first baseman John Holm (Naperville, IL/ Naperville Central), the reigning NCAC Player of the Year. Holm batted a solid .373 (57-of-153) to go with 12 home runs, 52 runs batted in, 44 runs scored and eight doubles. Senior Chris Deig (Evansville, IN/ F.J. Reitz) and junior Montana Timmons (Lafayette, IN/ McCutcheon) were also first-team all-conference performers a year ago while senior Andrew Swart (Crawfordsville, IN/ Crawfordsville) was named to the second team and senior John Pennington (Indianapolis, IN/ North Central) was an honorable-mention selection. Swart will lead the pitching staff after posting a 7-5 record in 2011. Wabash's ace recorded 86.2 innings of work and finished the season with a 3.74 earned run average and 69 strikeouts. Wabash will again be led by Cory Stevens, who enters his sixth season at the helm. Stevens has turned the Little Giants into a contender in the North Coast during his short tenure, guiding Wabash to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance a year ago. His 2009 squad finished atop the NCAC West Division, becoming the first Little Giants team to earn a berth in the NCAC Tournament. Wooster leads all NCAC teams with 13 championships in 27 years, including winning six of the last ten titles. Ohio Wesleyan (10), Allegheny (4) and Wabash (1) are the only other teams to capture a title in the history of the league. Allegheny and Wooster shared the inaugural crown in the 1985 season.
