NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
ALLEGHENY COLLEGE * DENISON UNIVERSITY * DEPAUW UNIVERSITY * HIRAM COLLEGE * KENYON COLLEGE OBERLIN COLLEGE * OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY * WABASH COLLEGE * WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY * COLLEGE OF WOOSTER
Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together
WWW.NORTHCOAST.ORG
a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 62 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

DEPAUW SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NORTH COAST SOFTBALL SEASON CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have selected DePauw as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual preseason coaches’ poll. The Tigers, who enter their first season of play in the North Coast, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting six first-place votes and 77 total points from league coaches. Hiram, who claimed its second NCAC Tournament title after defeating top-seeded Denison in the championship game year ago, garnered two first-place votes and finished just behind DePauw in the polls with 72 points. Denison, last year’s conference champion, earned the final first-place vote and finished third with 64 points, followed by Ohio Wesleyan (54) in fourth. Allegheny and Wittenberg tied for fifth with 36 votes, and were followed by Wooster (33), Kenyon (21) and Oberlin (12). The Tigers, who debuted at No. 9 on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Div. III Top 25 preseason poll, return six of their top eight hitters from last season as well as their ace pitcher. Senior Rachel MacBeth (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) leads all Tiger returners after hitting .443 (74-of-167) with two home runs, 13 doubles, 43 runs scored and 32 RBI in 2011. DePauw's five other returning leaders combined for a .491 average (221-of-463) to go with 43 of the Tigers’ 79 doubles, 32-of-46 home runs, 151-of-316 runs scored and 152-of-279 RBI. Junior Emily Bichler (Belgium, WI/ Port Washington) returns as DePauw's ace on the mound in 2012 after she started 41-of-43 games last year while posting a 30-11 record. Bichler sported a 3.60 earned run average in 268.1 innings pitched with 125 strikeouts. Leading DePauw in 2011 will be Bonnie Skrenta (251-115-2, .685), a two-time recipient of the regional coaching staff of the year award. Since taking over the program in 2002, Skrenta has led the Tigers to 251 victories and five straight trips to the NCAA Division III tournament, including three trips to the NCAA finals in 2007, 2010 and 2011. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, four different teams have claimed conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, ‘06, ‘07, 2009-11), while Allegheny has captured four (1998, ‘99, 2004, ‘08), Ohio Wesleyan three (‘04, ‘05, ‘10) and Wittenberg one (‘00). The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned five tournament titles (‘01, ‘02, ‘06, ‘08, ‘09), followed by Allegheny with three (‘04, ‘05, ‘07), Hiram with two (‘09, ‘11) and Wittenberg with one (‘03).
