Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women's sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American Andy Manson, DePauw amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together

a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in Sarah Vorder Bruegge, Allegheny the governance of the conference. Forty-eight teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all nine members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2010-11 academic year. The NCAC added another NCAA Division III swimming championships as Denison claimed the men’s title. Conference members have accumulated 64 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 207 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC's commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

KENYON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NCAC MEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have unanimously selected Kenyon as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual preseason men’s tennis coaches poll. The Lords, five-time defending NCAC champions, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting all nine first-place votes and 81 total points from league coaches. Denison, last year’s runner-up in the conference tournament, finished behind Kenyon in the polls with 67.5 points. DePauw, in its first season of men’s tennis competition in the North Coast, finished third with 60.5 points, followed by Wabash (48) in fourth. Wittenberg finished fifth with 44 votes and was followed by Allegheny (42), Oberlin (29), Ohio Wesleyan (23) and Wooster (10). The Lords, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament for the third time in four years last spring, return eight of its top players from a year ago. Junior Paul Burgin (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) is the leading candidate to fill the void at No. 1 singles left by the graduation of All-American Jeremy Polster. Playing at second singles as a sophomore, Burgin racked up a 26-5 record, earned an all-NCAC first-team nod, was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Region Player to Watch and qualified for the NCAA Division III singles championships. Leading Kenyon for his 17th season is four-time NCAC Coach of the Year Scott Thielke. His current coaching record at Kenyon is 258-90 with the men’s team and 270-110 with the women’s team. Since 2000, Thielke has led the Lords to 11 NCAA appearances, including an active streak of 10 consecutive showings (2002-11). Kenyon leads the NCAC with 14 championships in 27 years (1989, 1991-93, 1995, 2002-05, 2007-11), including winning nine of the last 10 crowns. Denison is not far off in the all-time title count as it has earned 12 championships (1985-89, 1994, 1997-2001, 2006), while Wooster has captured two outright titles (1990, 1996) and four all-time. Denison and Wooster shared the inaugural title in 1985, while Denison, Kenyon and Wooster were declared tri-champions in 1989.

DENISON SELECTED AS THE PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 28TH NCAC WOMEN’S TENNIS SEASON North Coast Athletic Conference coaches have unanimously selected Denison as the preseason favorite based on balloting in the annual women’s tennis preseason coaches poll. The Big Red, winners of the past 10 NCAC championships, were selected to finish first in the preseason poll after collecting three first-place votes and 59 total points from league coaches. DePauw, in its first season of women’s tennis competition in the North Coast, collected the other five first-place votes and finished second with 55 points. Kenyon finished third with 46 points, followed by Oberlin (42) in fourth. Wittenberg finished fifth with 31 points and was followed by Allegheny (29), Ohio Wesleyan (17) and Wooster (9). Denison, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament for the seventh time in the last eight seasons last spring, returns three seniors for the 2012 campaign. Senior Sarah Short (Cheswick, PA/Fox Chapel) looks to step into the No. 1 position after posting an 18-10 overall singles mark a year ago. Short also earned All-American honors and was an all-NCAC first-team selection in doubles play, compiling an 18-10 overall record and going 6-0 in conference matches. Leading the Denison women for his 13th season is 10-time NCAC Coach of the Year Peter Burling. His current coaching record at Denison is 304-124 with the men’s team and 252-88 with the women’s team. In 27 years of North Coast women’s tennis competition, three schools have claimed championships: Allegheny took the first one in 1985, then Kenyon went on a run to claim 15 of the next 16 titles, interrupted only by Denison’s first title in 1994. The Big Red again broke the Ladies’s streak in 2002, and have claimed every title since. Kenyon has a total of 15 North Coast titles to Denison’s 11, which include the past 10 in a row.
