plans designed to establish an organisation of more than 6000 nurses and other staff, comprising 2500 RDNS employees and 3700 RSL Care employees. Together, the providers will deliver home nursing and support, retirement living and residential care for 25,000 customers a day, primarily across the eastern seaboard and also in South Australia, Western Australia and New Zealand. In the deal, which was signed off in early October, RSL Care and RDNS will continue to operate with their separate brands under the umbrella of RSL Care RDNS Limited. The new organisation will have an asset base of more than $1 billion and a combined revenue of about $500 million. RSL Care chair Pat McIntosh said no jobs will be axed under the deal as the combined entity has its sights set on expansion, with a focus on the two most important requirements of consumers - wellness and independence. “We are looking at expanding our home care and community care services into more healthrelated services,” he said. “We are also going to grow it through our residential aged care capability, which we are very good at, our partnership or alliance with Generation Healthcare is going to enable us to acquire more residential aged care assets to be operated by RSL Care into the future.

University of Derby Online Learning is proud to value inter-professional practice and education By Gemma Sinead Ryan, Senior Lecturer in Nursing at University of Derby Online Learning
T
he mobilisation of care from hospitals into the community, from new technologies and the changing landscape of populations has an increasing impact on service delivery and provision. Integrated practice across health and social care professions and agencies remains an international priority. The success of innovative and integrated models of care delivery will be dependent on high quality, inter-professional practice and education should reflect this. Professionalism and effective inter-professional working is essential and our ethos is to value our own and our students profession, skills and experiences. Our online health and social care qualifications, including: Integrative Health and Social Care MSc and Integrative Health and Social Care BSc (Hons) top up, put our students at the centre of our curriculum development and delivery. Our programmes are designed to be flexible, innovative and accessible to those working in a busy health and social care environment. Coupled with this they are inter-professional on a global level, enabling professionals from a range of backgrounds to study interprofessionally; learning from others through use of collaborative debating platforms such as values exchange. Emphasis is on facilitating evidence based practice applied in a wide range of settings; making learning relevant, current and applicable to you as the student. Academic staff are active in clinical and pedagogic research, meaning that we embed

evidence based practice in everything we do. At UDOL we aim to be thought leaders, as health and social care professionals and academics. The education of healthcare professionals is my ‘work’ and has been for many years. During a recent research project I discussed the concept of professional accountability with my students. We concluded that accountability is linked to being proud of your professional values: integrated practice is linked with professional pride, professional pride can therefore, enhance quality. Integrating our services and care requires health and social care professionals to know their own and others value, forming a collaborative approach with the service user at the centre of what we do. Being proud of our profession facilitates high quality and accountable practitioners who are confident to challenge and focused on shared aims. We have to openly and habitually value ourselves; we do this in UDOL. “Give yourself and your profession permission to be proud” Read more about our passion and enthusiasm enhancing integrated practices through professional pride on the HealthTimes.com.au website. Enjoy variety, challenges and travel as a nurse in the Army By Jamie Clarke
L
ooking for a sense of adventure, Terranora local Jamie Clarke joined the Australian Regular Army as a Nursing Officer. She said her career has delivered an enormous amount of enjoyment and personal satisfaction. “We deliver healthcare in unique and challenging environments and we have a duty to Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families,” Jamie said. The critical role Australian Army Nurses play in the ADF Jamie understands at a personal level. She taught Combat First Aid to a soldier who provided initial care to her younger brother when he sustained injuries while on duty overseas. The scenario in which her brother’s care was dependant on the quality of training she delivered has influenced her perspective of Army nursing. “We approach all tasks from teaching Combat First Aid to prepare soldiers for war-like operations, through to care for physically and/or psychologically wounded soldiers with a great sense of responsibility,” she said. “The most memorable moment of my career so far was deploying to Afghanistan where I worked with a professional and skilled medical team providing medical training and care to Australian, Coalition and Afghani soldiers and locals. “I enjoy the professional diversity and camaraderie that comes with Nursing in the Army
and is not necessarily found within the civilian workforce. “The Army requires us to practice outside of a normal clinical environment and thus requires skills beyond those required of a civilian registered nurse. “We’re supported to develop and refine our clinical skills and knowledge along with our leadership and management qualities,” Jamie said. There are specialist training courses and support mechanisms in place for external studies. The Defence Assisted Study Scheme incorporates financial support and/or work release for professional training and education. Nursing Officers will work in a range of environments from units, to field hospitals, to major metropolitan hospitals. They could be responsible for anything from immediate prehospital resuscitation to being part of a larger team providing comprehensive hospital service. Small treatment teams will deploy during combat, peace-keeping and humanitarian relief operations. The skill sets they develop extend beyond nursing. The Army builds leaders and managers and Nursing Officers are no exception, they fill a range of key management, administrative and command positions which develop their skills and professionalism beyond clinical services.

Education gets clinical exercise physiology moving By Karen Keast A new specialised exercise rehabilitation clinic is working to strengthen New Zealand’s emerging clinical exercise physiology profession. More than 30 Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) Bachelor and Postgraduate Diploma of Sport and Exercise Science students are developing and delivering personalised exercise programs for older people as part of their qualifications. Under the supervision of trained staff, students are assisting the 35 Hamilton participants at Wintec’s Biokinetic Clinic, one of just a handful in the nation, which focuses on the prevention, management and rehabilitation of chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, and chronic pain or injury. Wintec is one of an increasing number of education providers, including the University of Auckland, CPIT and the Universal College of Learning (UCOL), offering programs enabling students to train as clinical exercise physiologists. The move comes after Clinical Exercise Physiology New Zealand (CEPNZ) was formed in 2012 to develop the fledgling allied health discipline. Health Workforce New Zealand has also highlighted clinical exercise physiology as one of its new workforce roles, following in the footsteps of countries where clinical exercise
Page 30| www.HealthTimes.com.au
physiology is well established, such as Australia, the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United States. Clinical exercise physiologists provide tailored and monitored exercise programs and lifestyle education to prevent and manage patients’ injuries, chronic conditions and diseases. Wintec program coordinator Stephen Burden, a CEPNZ board member, said clinical exercise physiology taps into specialist knowledge in diseases and pathologies, and how exercise can be leveraged to improve patients’ health. Mr Burden said the nation faces an ageing population alongside an obesity epidemic, rising diabetes rates and other chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease. “The impact that specialised exercise programs can have on the prevention, management and rehabilitation of these conditions is huge but until recently, it hasn’t been recognised as an allied health profession in New Zealand, and therefore we haven’t had the training options available,” he said. The program at the clinic, which opened in July, has been labelled a win-win initiative for both the students and participants.

Nurse extends helping hand to mums with postnatal depression Registered nurse Kristina Paterson experienced antenatal and postnatal depression for 18 months before she was eventually diagnosed and on the path to receiving much-needed treatment. Despite being at-risk for postnatal depression, the New Zealand nurse was never screened or assessed by a midwife or a Well Child nurse. And when she sought help from her GP, she was given medicine but was not referred to a counsellor or provided with any information about postnatal depression and recovery. It was these glaring gaps in the health system that prompted the nurse, who lives in Northland with her son, to found Mothers’ Helpers in 2010. While mums with severe perinatal depression are well supported in New Zealand, there remains little support for mums with mild to moderate perinatal depression. The charity is working to provide support to women under stress and at risk of perinatal depression with a unique education course on recovery, while it’s also campaigning for mandatory screening to improve early detection, support and recovery for mums. University of Auckland research, in the Growing Up in New Zealand survey, found one in eight Kiwi mums suffer from depression symptoms during their pregnancy. Mothers’ Helpers estimates postnatal depression and anxiety affects between 15 to 20 per cent of mums but with inadequate screening, the charity concedes it’s difficult to pinpoint the extent of the problem. Mothers’ Helpers recently conducted a survey of 100 Kiwi mums, who have experienced postnatal depression, which revealed significant delays in diagnosis and inadequate treatment options. Kristina, a nurse of 18 years who has worked in general medical/surgical acute nursing, paediatric nursing and community nursing such as practice
Page 32| www.HealthTimes.com.au
nursing, Well Child nursing and educational roles, says the gaps are an “enormous concern”. “With inadequate education, delays in diagnosis and treatment, we have mothers whose depression is at risk of becoming severe,” she says. “There are very real risks of maternal suicide, there is the risk of partner depression, relationship breakdowns, and poor attachment between mother and child - resulting in social, emotional and cognitive issues for that child throughout their life. “With regards to screening, midwives screen for diabetes and pre-eclampsia and yet it is maternal suicide that is the leading cause of maternal deaths but we are not screening for anxiety/ depression - even though the majority of those deaths happen during pregnancy.”

t’s no easy feat being shift-working parents just ask Neil and Valerie Noble. The Cairns paramedics and parents of Matthew, aged 7, and Courtney, 11, often face the work-life juggle of finding carers for their children when their work rosters clash. “Val’s a flight paramedic - she works two days, two nights and then has four off, and I work a Thursday to Thursday week on, week off, so there’s many a time where we’re both on shift at night time together,” Neil, an operations supervisor at Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), said. “There’s no childcare facilities that are 24-hours in Cairns, so we pay for someone to come to the house or we look for the kids to go to someone else’s house.”
Neil and Valerie are two of thousands of shift-working health professionals, including paramedics, nurses and midwives, who have applied to access subsidised nannies for childcare at home, under a new Federal Government trial. Applications for the $246 million two-year Nanny Pilot Program closed on November 5. A spokesperson for the Department of Social Services (DSS) said the government extended the application period after a “high level of demand” from families applying for the program. The department is now assessing applications against the program’s eligibility criteria with successful families set to be notified in early December.

Physiotherapists and the new life they gave Gill Hicks By Karen Keast
P
hysiotherapists gave Gill Hicks the confidence to fall and, as a result, the courage to stand. Mastering how to fall was a pivotal lesson for Gill, who lost both her legs in the July 7, 2005, London bombings. “The physios would literally push me over so I’d fall and then they taught me how to get up and we would do this on mats, over and over again,” she says, speaking from her home in Adelaide. “This is all about - how do I exist in the real world on my own, how do I have independence? “Their thinking was I need to learn how to fall and how to get up so I’m not scared of what will happen - and they took the fear away, as best as they could. “I think it’s really quite wonderful that when you’ve got the confidence to fall, you’ve got the confidence to stand. I think that’s a beautiful metaphor actually for life.” Gill says it’s a lesson that even today, 10 years after her world changed in the terrorist attacks, still comes in handy. “Being back in Australia, the hot climate doesn’t really work for me because I’m attached by two silicon gloves,” she says. “So when it’s very hot of course my body overheats and the gloves can start to slip off the leg, so I have been in situations where I’ve just been walking along and a leg just slips off.

“That’s awkward particularly if there is someone walking past, I have to say - excuse me, can you pick my leg up for me?,” she laughs. Gill was 37 and travelling to work on the London Underground the day a series of coordinated suicide bomb attacks targeted three trains on ‘the tube’ and a double-decker bus. With incredible humour, Gill says it was as if the universe conspired to ensure she was on that train, just one person away from the terrorist, shortly before 9am on that fateful day. “The funny thing is I was an absolute workaholic,” she says. “I was always in my office at 7.30 every single morning, except that day. “I was running late, I got to the train station, I didn’t have my travel card - so all of these increments of tiny bits of time added up to me being in the incident. “Even changing trains - I was on a train that I’m never normally on. “It’s those things that are just so infuriating to think - why? It was just exceptional circumstances that morning. “Despite what’s happened to me I think London is one of the safest major world cities. “I lived there for 26 years - it was an amazing place to live and grow so much as a person.”
