Congress a critical boon for PICU nurses by Belinda Smart Covering the broadest spectrum of practice of all the nursing specialties, the highly specialised yet varied area known as pediatric critical care nursing or pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nursing, is among one of the most challenging and rewarding career paths available to nursing professionals. PICU nurses care for all children from new born infants to teenagers, presenting with a variety of problems from the straightforward to the highly complex. As a sector, it’s not without its challenges however. According to a report by the Australian Health Workforce Advisory Committee published in 2002 and projecting workforce needs from 2001 to 2011, a number of factors look set to increase the demands on paediatric intensive care services in the future, including population growth, technological advances and surgical initiatives, including those associated in particular with cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease, craniofacial surgery, transplantation and epilepsy surgery. Expanding oncological services also look set to place demands on PICUs, as well as changing expectations of parents and caregivers in certain groups of children with chronic disabilities. It’s therefore heartening news for Australian PICU nurses that The Sixth World Congress on Pediatric Critical Care will this year take place in Sydney. Rolling out from 13 - 17 March 2011 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour, the congress is being led by The World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS), an association of world leaders in the field of Pediatric Critical Care with a vision to combine international expertise to improve the outcomes of sick or injured children. www.ncah.com.au

Significantly, a co-host of the congress will be The Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN), which represents over 2,000 critical care nurses nationally, working across the critical care clinical spectrum including emergency, coronary care, high dependency, cardiothoracic and general intensive care units, and academic and educational settings. The congress’ other co-host will be The Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS), the peak professional and advocacy body for medical practitioners specialising in the treatment and management of critically ill patients in public and private hospitals. Organisers believe of special interest to nurses will be a pre-congress symposium at the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies meeting in Sydney on March 13. The one-day event will provide a full day of professional networking and education for clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, educators, administrators, researchers and other pediatric healthcare professionals caring for critically ill children, or anyone interested in Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) in the Pediatric Critical Care environment. Structured to provide a forum for open dialogue amongst participants focusing on topics pertinent to the APN including practice, education, and research, the symposium will enable information regarding the APN role to be shared via a panel format, with panelists representing differing perspectives from around the world. NSW nurses end industrial action, voting yes for new deal An extra 1400 full-time equivalent nurses will be employed in New South Wales hospitals by 2013, after NSW nurses voted in favour of a new industrial relations agreement with the State Government. The NSW Nurses Association (NSWNA) last week put the new state award before the NSW Industrial Relations Commission after 90 percent of members voted in favour of the pay and conditions deal. The agreement signals an end to the union’s year-long campaign for a safer staffing and skill mix in NSW public hospitals and community health services, which culminated in the closure of up to 600 hospital beds last month. Under the deal, 80 percent of the extra 1400 nurses will be registered nurses while an additional 188 resuscitation nurses will be injected into 34 of the state’s larger emergency departments. The deal signals improved staffing for most wards in all acute hospitals, while staffing standards in operating theatres will also be boosted with a minimum of two nurses, plus an anaesthetic nurse in each theatre. NSW Health has also agreed to adopt Birthrate Plus, the generally accepted staffing ratio model for births per midwife in the UK, for NSW maternity and birthing facilities. The deal also guarantees a 9.7 percent pay rise over three years – equivalent to a weekly rise of $129 for the majority of full-time registered nurses and midwives by July 1, 2012. NSWNA general secretary Brett Holmes said while there were still some areas that needed work in future agreements, the new arrangement provides minimum, legallyenforceable staffing ratios in most hospital settings.

“Unfortunately NSW Health has not been as cooperative, at this stage, on community health services and that is something the NSWNA will be working very hard on over the next couple of years,” he said in a statement. For more articles visit NCAH.com.au careers@ncah.com.au

Researchers develop robotic scrub nurse technology United States researchers have developed a surgical system that recognises hand gestures as commands to control a robotic scrub nurse. The ‘vision-based hand gesture recognition’ technology, a concept explored in the Tom Cruise film Minority Report, has been designed to reduce surgery times and decrease the risk of infection. The system will also tell a computer to display medical images of a patient during an operation. Purdue University industrial engineering assistant professor Juan Pablo Wachs said while researchers at other institutions have developed robotic scrub nurses with voice recognition, little had been done in the area of gesture recognition. “Another big difference between our focus and the others is that we are also working on prediction, to anticipate what images the surgeon will need to see next and what instruments will be needed,” he said. The pioneering research is based on a system that uses a new Microsoft camera, called Kinect, that senses three-dimensional spaces, and specialised algorithms that recognise hand gestures as commands to instruct a computer or robot. Assistant Professor Wachs said the technology coupled with the use of a robotic scrub nurse was a potential new tool that could improve operating-room efficiency. “While it will be very difficult using a robot to achieve the same level of performance as an experienced nurse who has been working with the same surgeon for years, often scrub nurses have had very limited experience with a particular surgeon,” he said. www.ncah.com.au

“(That maximises)…the chances for misunderstandings, delays and sometimes mistakes in the operating room. In that case, a robotic scrub nurse could be better.” Work has now begun to extend and refine the system’s capabilities. For more articles visit NCAH.com.au

YOUR CAREER EDGE

Training boost for Indigenous aged care workers Indigenous aged care workers living in 60 rural and remote areas across Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia will receive a training boost. South Australia Tafe, Kimberley Tafe, Queensland Tafe and the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Education Program Aboriginal Corporation will provide on-site training as part of a Federal Government initiative. Federal Mental Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler said the training aimed to increase employment and development opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people after the success of similar projects in remote regions in the Northern Territory and in Cape York. “The project will provide important and relevant training to Indigenous people in their own communities, and this will assist the ageing Indigenous population to receive culturally appropriate care,” he said.

A Department of Health and Ageing spokesperson said the training was targeted at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care staff without formal qualifications or those who wanted to upgrade their qualifications. “While the training to be provided will be determined by individual skills audits conducted by the registered training organisations, in general the purpose of the training is to support these aged care workers to gain Certificate III level qualifications in aged care or home and community care,” he said. “The aim of the initiative is to upskill and promote career pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the aged care sector. “The project has already commenced and training will begin after the completion of the individual skills audit.” For more articles visit NCAH.com.au
