Do you have specialised nursing skills to share with a developing nation? Nursing opportunities in East Timor Two-year contracts In 2010 St John of God Health Care commenced a five-year National Nursing Development Program in East Timor. Our nursing team was initially deployed to Dili in June last year to develop knowledge, skills and standards of local nurses. After a successful first nine months, we are now ready to expand the nursing team significantly with six new specialised full-time positions created to fulfil our commitment to capacity building in East Timor. We are currently seeking registered nurses with the following qualifications: • Paediatric Nurse with ICU experience • Paediatric Emergency Nurse • Neonatal ICU Nurses (X2)
• Quality Nurse • ICU Nurse
For further details relating to these positions and to our work in East Timor, please visit our e-recruitment website at http://sjog.erecruit.com.au/ Working and domestic environments you will encounter in East Timor are far removed from those most nurses come to expect in Australia, and candidates must be resilient and patient to ensure they can work in this context. Our International Health nurses must be prepared to go the extra distance to ensure support for the development of nursing practices in a sustainable way. For further information on any of these positions please contact Anthea Ramos, International Health Manager on anthea.ramos@sjog.org.au Closing date for applications: 27 April 2011. The National Nursing Development Program operated by St John of God Health Care is part of a wider commitment to East Timor which includes a long-term National Pathology Development Program and primary health care projects in remote communities. Our work in East Timor has been recognised by the Global Health Fund and the World Bank as amongst the most successful by a nongovernment agency since the country’s independence.

Transforming healthcare in East Timor Over seven years, St John of God Health Care has helped develop significant improvements in health provisions for the East Timorese and this commitment is continuing to expand. Having identified only the most basic forms of diagnostics operating in the country, St John of God Health Care embarked on a Pathology Development Program in 2004. This program, operated in partnership with East Timor’s Ministry of Health, has dramatically improved the standards of pathology practice and equipment, ensuring much more reliable diagnosis of pathological processes. Successes achieved by the pathology program encouraged the Ministry of Health to seek further support from St John of God Health Care to assist in the development of nursing. Our first team of nurses was deployed to Dili in June 2010 with the aim of building capacity and capability amongst Timorese nurses. Ultimately, the goal of the National Nursing Development Program (NNDP) is to improve nursing standards and thus patient outcomes. The highly dedicated team of five nurses deployed to Dili has overcome some testing challenges to establish a position of respect amongst the local nursing community and St John of God Health Care is now ready to double the size of the nursing team in Timor to enable a strategic focus in areas of high mortality including paediatrics, ICU and emergency. Anthea Ramos, Group Manager International Health for St John of God Health Care said: “The central theme for our NNDP is to enable Timorese nurses to develop their skills and procedures in order to deliver better health outcomes for the people of East Timor,” Ms Ramos explained. “We are not there to do their jobs for them but to help the Timorese nurses be better at the jobs they do. Nursing Program Manager, Tim Vanderwal, added: “The NNDP is being implemented in a highly challenging environment, and our nurses need to be tenacious in the face of various challenges. The program provides a unique opportunity to combine clinical work with the design and delivery of policy, training, and education, building sustainable improvements in local capacity. “It is very pleasing to see that some significant improvements in nursing practice are already occurring and we are confident this program can make a substantial positive impact on the professionalism and job satisfaction of the nurses of East Timor, and on the health and well-being of the population they serve.” St to

John of God Health Care’s ongoing commitment East Timor also includes further growth of the NNDP, building technical competencies and skills of the scientific staff, and advancing community health programs to educate volunteer staff to be able to perform various mary health functions. These programs operated in East Timor are a key component of St John of God Health Care’s Social Outreach and Advocacy services, which reach out people experiencing disadvantage in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region to improve health and wellbeing. Allied Health Professionals Boost Autism Services Speech pathologists and occupational therapists are helping Queensland children with autism spectrum disorder improve their communication, motor and sensory skills. The Autism Early Intervention Outcomes Unit (AEIOU) is establishing more early intervention services with construction of a new custombuilt centre in Sippy Downs and another at Central Queensland University’s Bundaberg campus set to open next year. The Bundaberg centre will provide specialist services for up to 24 children with autism. The new centres come as research shows ASD, a lifelong developmental disability, affects one in every 160 children born today.
AEIOU director of education Diane Heaney said the foundation now had nine speech pathologists, a speech pathology assistant, eight occupational therapists and a psychologist working with about 175 children with autism. “Our program helps children to develop communication skills and motor skills as well as self help tasks and skills for every day life, with an emphasis on positive reinforcement, reward and recognition and social interaction,” she said. work towards achieving individual milestones within the program. Survey Finds Remote Nurses Under Stress Nurses in remote areas of Australia have high levels of psychological distress, stress, trauma and emotional exhaustion, according to a new research project.
in central Australia and at the top end of the Northern Territory met in discussion groups to consider the results of the national survey.
The Centre for Remote Health study also found remote area nurses (RANs) enjoy moderate levels of work satisfaction and high levels of work engagement.
They developed action plans targeting organisational rather than individual changes, which were later work-shopped with implementation committees of middle managers.
The research, in the project titled Back from the Edge: Reducing and preventing occupational stress to remote area nursing workforce, hopes to help reduce and prevent occupational stress for RANs. Centre for Remote Health lecturer Sue Lenthall will present the paper at the 11th National Rural Health Conference, held at the Perth Exhibition Convention Centre from March 13-16. The biennial conference aims to provide answers to a range of health-related challenges facing the seven million people who live in country Australia. Groups of RANs and health service managers working in remote Indigenous communities

Ms Lenthall said the four-year long survey found key stress factors included the frequency of emergencies, feelings of responsibility and unrealistic expectations from patients and health services. “Our survey showed that high levels of occupational stress among RANs are contributing to turnover of staff and quality of health service delivery,” she said. “By employing a bottom-up action research approach, RANs were empowered to contribute to system change to decrease occupational stress.” Copyright NCAH

A $97 million national software roll out at pharmacies across Australia will help pharmacists avoid mistakes when dispensing medication. The software, set to be introduced within the next two years, has won the support of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. PSA spokesman Peter Waterman welcomed the new computer program, which will allow pharmacists to track patients’ drug intake and warn against risks when combining different drugs. “(The program) will promote communication between pharmacists, prescribers and consumers, improve the quality use of medicines and lead to improved health outcomes for all consumers,” he said. Researchers from the University of Tasmania have been commissioned to develop and test the program, which will assist pharmacists in helping patients better manage their medications. University of Tasmania Professor Gregory Peterson said it was becoming more difficult for pharmacists to manage the rising demand for prescription medication. Health consumer groups have been involved and they can also see the benefits, they know the problems that medications can cause in society, so anything like this which encourages interventions and encourages communication and the empowerment of patients – they can see that benefit,” he said. PULSE is a leading healthcare recruitment company facilitating Nursing and Allied Health care professionals’ movement & placement into the UK. With 15 years proven experience, we always aim to provide you with the highest level of professional & personalised recruitment service. We welcome all enquires and invite you to read a letter from one of our nurses who has recently done it all. I arrived in London in 2009 with absolutely no idea what I was going to do. I hadn’t looked into my UK nursing registration prior to leaving Australia and after three months of travelling I found myself in a new country not really sure of where to start. A friend had mentioned Pulse to me before I left home and once I arrived it seemed that every nurse or person I met that knew a nurse working in the UK recommended Pulse. So after a week of applying for random jobs in retail and getting nowhere I gave them a call and have never looked back! From the moment I registered I have found the team at Pulse to be extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. Although I didn’t have my registration, I was initially able to gain work as a health care assistant in a variety of settings including the community, home care and NHS hospitals. During this time my consultant at Pulse was on hand to help me navigate my way through the process of registering with the UK NMC. Once I had received my decision letter from the NMC I was able to complete my ONP through Pulse in London and, upon gaining my registration I found plenty of work opportunities in my chosen field of paediatrics. During my time in London I was able to gain invaluable experience, not only in leading tertiary institutions such as Great Ormond Street, but also in avenues that were new to me such as school nursing and home care. Instead of taking a step back in my career to travel, I feel like I have taken a huge step forwards as the experience and adaptability that I gained working through Pulse will be invaluable to my future nursing career. Aside from providing me with the financial means and flexibility to pursue my European travel dreams, Pulse were also able to take away some of the stress that comes with relocating to a new country. They helped me to set up a bank account and gain a national insurance number and provided me with an employment reference when I was house hunting. At a time when everything seemed a little overwhelming I couldn’t have been more grateful for the assistance I was provided. In January this year I made the decision to return to Sydney. However shortly after I let the team in London know that I was heading home I was contacted by Pulse in Australia. I am now in the process of joining with Pulse to do agency work in Sydney. This has definitely made the process of returning home a whole lot easier for me. Working for Pulse was such a huge and enjoyable part of my overseas experience. I would happily recommend them to anyone looking to relocate overseas and I look forward to continuing my nursing career with them now that I am back in Australia. Working in the UK - some things never change By Bridget Willett Step back in time to 1953, the year of Elizabeth II’s coronation, with the Korean War raging and Winston Churchill in his second stint as British Prime Minister .A young nurse trained at the Children’s Hospital in Perth, Western Australia, travels by ship to England to broaden her horizons. When she arrives, she pays four guineas for life registration with the nursing body, UKCC, having taken proof of her training with her. She registers with an agency and earns £10 per week working ten weeks of five 12-hour night shifts at the London Chest Hospital nursing tuberculosis patients when she’s not travelling. Fast forward to 1986, the year that the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl in the USSR (now Ukraine) blows up and Prince Andrew marries Sarah Ferguson. The nurse’s daughter has completed her hospital-based training and a staffing year in Perth. After negotiating all the paperwork by snail mail and armed in advance with life registration with the UKCC, she steps on a plane to London, where she spends six wide-eyed months working through an agency. She spends three months in the cardiothoracic unit at St Bartholomew’s, the oldest hospital in the world, built 500 years before her country was discovered. She also has six opulent weeks living in Chelsea with a prominent Saudi family as maternity nurse for their newborn daughter, paid £194 per week (plus board and all the food she could eat!) for that heady experience. The rest of the time, she explores. If you haven’t already guessed, that wideeyed nurse was me, following in my mother’s footsteps. It seems that some things never change and others have changed substantially. www.ncah.com.au
One of the changes is the amount of time and the paperwork required to organise everything before you are ready to work as a nurse overseas. Andy Rennie from Pulse Australia explained that the process starts when they first receive an application and takes about six months before the nurse can actually work a shift. There are several visas to choose from and Australians are required to pass an English language test. Once in the UK, they need to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and complete the Overseas Nurses Program, which is the standard training for all nursing registration applicants educated outside the European Union. As the largest healthcare recruiter in the UK, Pulse has an agreement with
Bournemouth University to regularly run the program in London for the agency, making it easier for their nurses to enrol and attend. Pulse is certainly not the only agency assisting Australian nurses to travel and work overseas.. The support of any reputable agency will streamline the process for you and provide support while you find your way. Recently, I spoke to a nurse who has just returned from living and working in London for nine months. She signed up with an agency when she arrived and they were very supportive, even helping with extra details such as setting up a bank account. They also provided her with a letter for potential landlords, stating that she was employed with them and how much she could potentially earn, which meant that she had no problem finding somewhere to live.
She found there was more than enough work available and the best thing was the freedom and flexibility to choose when and where to work so she could travel frequently and not worry about earning enough money. Wherever she worked, there were Aussie accents in the tearoom. One thing that hasn’t changed is how much Australian healthcare workers have always been valued for their work ethics and well-regarded qualifications. The main thing to keep in mind if you are planning a working holiday is that it takes lots of time and paperwork, but it is well worth it in the end. Apart from the professional experience you gain from working in another country, the treasured memories and friends from your time away will last a lifetime, as they have for my mother and for me. Those things never change. Copyright NCAH careers@ncah.com.au

Aussie speech pathologist develops iPad app in London A former Melbourne speech pathologist has developed an iPad and iPhone application for people with communication impairments.
“My main client group are young adults who are working on getting back to school or work following a traumatic head injury,” she said.
Rebecca Bright, who now works in London, launched the application Predictable in January.
“This is always an enjoyable group of clients to work with, who are in a period of transition in their life. With these clients, therapy needs to be very functional and meaningful for their everyday life.”
The application provides speech output for people with various speech impairments, such as dysarthria. “To use the application, you type in your message and you are aided by a sophisticated prediction engine which predicts the same and next word based on context,” Ms Bright said. “This speeds up getting your message across. You can use it directly or via a switch.” Ms Bright said her application came after a session where she demonstrated a small handheld device used for a communication aid to a young adult. “I realised then that it was important for AAC devices to suit the person in a range of ways, including offering social inclusivity,” she said. “The iPhone and iPad offer not only intuitive design but also has the ‘cool factor’ which is important for everyone.” Ms Bright moved to London in 2005 and began working as a locum on an elderly care ward before working with adults in inpatient rehabilitation. Three years later, Ms Bright launched her own venture and now caters to clients who have communication or swallowing difficulties following a stroke or head injury. www.ncah.com.au
Ms Bright said she loved working in London, where Australian speech pathologists are well regarded. “The feedback I’ve had is that Australian therapists are happy to get on with the job,” she said. “Plus, our four year degree and dysphagia qualification means that we have an edge I think. Plus we tend to be good all-rounders!” For more information on Predictable visit www.tboxapps.com.
NZ Nurses Label Alcohol a Key Health Issue New Zealand nurses are at the coalface of the country’s “disastrous drinking culture”, according to the New Zealand Nurses Organisation. The NZNO has called on the government to get tough on alcohol abuse in its submission to the Alcohol Reform Bill at the Justice and Electoral Select Committee. In its submission to MPs on the bill, which is targeting a rise in youth drinking, the organisation said nurses deal directly with the harm caused by alcohol abuse “from lead maternity carers caring for pregnant women who poison their babies with alcohol to mental health and prison nurses who cope with alcohol-induced violence…” It also said family planning nurses were affected “who deal with unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, to emergency nurses who have to re-prioritise the care of other sick people to deal with victims of drunk driving, alcoholfuelled violence or those suffering alcohol poisoning”. The organisation joined Maori nurses, emergency and mental health nurses to campaign for more action, stating the current
bill would do little to change the harmful epidemic caused by alcohol abuse. In its submission, the NZNO called for protections that would be put in place for any other epidemic such as “prevention through limiting access to alcohol; protection for the most vulnerable, especially children; education to change attitudes; and timely intervention and treatment”. The organisation stated it was vital the problem was treated as a health issue and has lobbied for the price and purchase age of alcohol to be raised. Te Runanga o Aotearoa NZNO kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku told the select committee alcohol has had a destructive impact on the health of Maori since Europeans first introduced it in the early 1800s. “Alcohol has disrupted Maori cultural norms, values and traditions and Maori continue to experience disproportionate harm from alcohol,” she said. “Maori are four times more likely than non-Maori to die from an alcohol-related condition.” Copyright NCAH
