Do you have specialised nursing skills to share with a developing nation? Nursing opportunities in East Timor Two-year contracts In 2010 St John of God Health Care commenced a five-year National Nursing Development Program in East Timor. Our nursing team was initially deployed to Dili in June last year to develop knowledge, skills and standards of local nurses. After a successful first nine months, we are now ready to expand the nursing team significantly with six new specialised full-time positions created to fulfil our commitment to capacity building in East Timor. We are currently seeking registered nurses with the following qualifications: • Paediatric Nurse with ICU experience • Paediatric Emergency Nurse • Neonatal ICU Nurses (X2)
• Paediatric Nurse • Quality Nurse • ICU Nurse
For further details relating to these positions and to our work in East Timor, please visit our e-recruitment website at http://sjog.erecruit.com.au/ Working and domestic environments you will encounter in East Timor are far removed from those most nurses come to expect in Australia, and candidates must be resilient and patient to ensure they can work in this context. Our International Health nurses must be prepared to go the extra distance to ensure support for the development of nursing practices in a sustainable way. For further information on any of these positions please contact Anthea Ramos, International Health Manager on anthea.ramos@sjog.org.au Closing date for applications: 27 April 2011. The National Nursing Development Program operated by St John of God Health Care is part of a wider commitment to East Timor which includes a long-term National Pathology Development Program and primary health care projects in remote communities. Our work in East Timor has been recognised by the Global Health Fund and the World Bank as amongst the most successful by a nongovernment agency since the country’s independence.

More Child Health Nurses Needed in WA Western Australia is in the midst of a child health nurse crisis with figures showing there is just one child health nurse for every 1000 children under the age of six. Figures show there are 198 full-time equivalent child health nurse positions and another 105 child health nurses are needed over the next five years to avoid a major shortfall. There have been three parliamentary inquiries into the state’s child health services since 2009 and a damning Auditor-General’s report found just 30 percent of 18-month-olds and nine percent of three-year-olds were receiving their recommended checks. The report also found there had been a 12 percent rise in the birth rate between 2005 and 2008 but there was no matching increase in the number of child health nurses.
www.ncah.com.au
Auditor General Colin Murphy stated the disparity meant children were missing out on key health checks in their early developmental years. “Health is giving priority to the first four checks and it is reaching 99 percent of newborns in the first month in the metropolitan area but this is at the expense of other checks,” he stated. The figures come as a 2009 standing committee report noted the child health nurse workforce was ageing. For the full article visit NCAH.com.au Copyright NCAH

Registration Renewal Begins for Midwives and Nurses The ACT kicked off the staged renewal process with registrations due on April 1. A spokesperson for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) said it was too early to know how many had met the registration deadline but those that had missed it were now in the “late period” and had until April 30 to lodge their applications. “If they do not lodge an application by this date, their registration will lapse and, under the national law, their name must be removed from the national register and they will not be able to practise unless they complete a new application for registration,” she said. Nurses and midwives across Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and New South Wales have until May 31 to renew while the deadline for Queensland is June 30. This is the first year of national registration and renewal timing has been staged in a bid to establish a nationally consistent registration renewal date of May 31 from next year. Despite the staged renewals of such a large sector, the spokesperson said the process was expected to go “smoothly”. “We know nurses and midwives are professionals who know it is their job to renew their registration on time,” she said. “We know the job of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is to make that process as straightforward as possible.” The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has embraced Twitter to promote registration renewals.
“The registration renewal process has begun for more than 220,000 nurses and midwives across Australia.” “We’re making our debut into social media to help keep in touch with our professions,” Board chair Anne Copeland said. AHPRA
has
also

up
its
communications with an email campaign, letters to practitioners, flyers and employer information. Nurses and midwives are encouraged to check their registration details at the online national register - www.ahpra.gov.au.

Paramedics Miss Gold but Move On National Registration A Queensland group of paramedics has missed out on a top place in the prestigious international JEMS Games in the USA despite being named the best clinical team in the competition. Team Australia EMS (Emergency Medical Services), the only Australian team in the games, competed against teams from more than 20 different countries at Baltimore last month, as part of the pre-hospital emergency care Olympics.
Mr Noble recently spoke about the importance of introducing national registration to the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council in Brisbane, which is reviewing options for strengthening regulation requirements for unregistered health practitioners. “The doctors are registered, the nurses are registered, do you really want your father who is having a heart attack being treated by an

“We didn’t miss a single thing, we didn’t make a single mistake and they were very impressed. “It was very good to benchmark against other countries to see where Australia stands in terms of our clinical competence.” The team, consisting of Ambulance Service paramedics Alan Mountford, Neil Noble, Garry Harris and Gary Berkowitz, also conducted research into a national registration scheme for Australian paramedics, as part of their trip. Mr Noble, who is based at the Cairns Ambulance Station, said the team compiled information on national registration schemes in Canada, America and South Africa for Ferno Australia and Paramedics Australasia (formerly the Australasian College of Ambulance Professionals), in a long-overdue bid to establish national registration in Australia. www.ncah.com.au

Nurses Qualified to Help Sex Assault Victims Eleven nurses and midwives have become qualified to gather evidence in sexual assault cases, in an Australian first. The Western Australian nurses graduated from a forensic training course in Bunbury, enabling them to take samples from sexual assault victims, which can be used as evidence in court. Until recent changes to legislation, only doctors were authorised to conduct forensic procedures on victims and collect samples. WA Police Minister Rob Johnson said the new arrangement would reduce the risk of lost evidence. “Victims of sexual assault in regional areas were disadvantaged if a doctor was unavailable and often meant they had to travel excessive distances in order to undergo a forensic examination to collect vital evidence,” he said. “This situation led to significant shortfalls in the quality of forensic evidence due to the long delays in transportation, which is vital for any successful prosecution of offenders in court. “Having trained nurses available on hand to carry out the internal forensic procedures will mean a better outcome for victims in country WA and will, in many instances, eliminate the potential loss of forensic evidence.” Mr Johnson said the program would be rolled out in regional and remote areas throughout the state. refer to the website for the full article.
