Sydney nursing students get hands on with robotic patients Robotic simulator mannequins are preparing University of Technology Sydney nursing students for treating real patients.

to improve students’ clinical judgement, confidence and bolster their practical learning in preparation for real life situations.

The university has unveiled seven new stateof-the-art clinical practice laboratories, five featuring robotic simulator mannequins, which will put more than 1500 midwifery and health students through their clinical paces.

“Using simulation learning strategies, students can actively participate in authentic care scenarios,” she said.

With realistic anatomical features such as complex airway systems, rising and falling chests, and heart and lung sounds, the students are putting theory into practice.

“Students comment that simulations make them think on their feet, as they’re exposed to the roles and responsibilities of registered nurses and midwives.”

The mannequins use technicians, who are seated behind a one-way mirror, to voice a range of scenarios in acute care and birthing suite environments.

UTS Dean of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Professor John Daly said the $4.8 million facilities provided realistic learning environments.

Those scenarios are filmed via cameras and one-way mirrors, with the vision later played back to students for debriefing.

“Nursing and midwifery are professions with immense responsibility and it’s vital that our students have every opportunity to practice their full range of skills in real life situations before they meet the public,” he said.

UTS Associate Dean Dr Joanne Gray said the clinical practice laboratories were designed

The College of Nursing chief executive Tracey Osmond said the nursing profession now faces leadership challenges on a new scale.

She said the program will provide participating nurses with opportunities to develop their skills, vital for their work while also advancing their careers.

Senior critical risk management nurse set to be industry advocate by Nina Hendy A Victorian nurse who specialised in perioperative surgery nursing is looking forward to being an outspoken advocate of the industry. By Nina Hendy. The Australian nursing sector is in sore need of an outspoken industry figure willing to spruik the benefits of a career in nursing, says Wendy Wood. Undoubtedly, this senior executive is the right person for the job. The deputy CEO and executive director of Cancer Nursing of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Care Centre has been named a finalist in the 2011 Telstra Victorian Business Women’s Awards after being nominated by her staff for the prestigious program. If she wins the Victorian award, she will proceed to the national finals, which will be announced in Melbourne on 18 November. Wood has driven critical risk management, effectiveness and workforce engagement projects that culminated in the centre being named the 2010 Metropolitan Health Service of the Year by the Victorian Government. And while being nominated as a finalist has certainly been a career highlight for her, she’s also very much looking forward to the opportunity to become an outspoken and passionate advocate for a career in nursing.

“Nursing is also a highly technical job that takes a huge amount of skill combined with a strong understanding of technology. My role, for example, is very much as a business woman and a nurse, because health is very much a business.” Wood is extremely conscious of the national nurse shortage and how that might impact on the business of health into the future, admitting she is considering ways to redesign the workforce in a bid to lessen the impact. “We really need to look at the skillsets required for each role and how those roles then need to be filled.” There are many other factors also impacting upon the health sector, including the rapid rate of changes occurring in technology, she says. “And within the cancer sector, people will be demanding the best treatments available and early detection will be increasingly common, which will give the sector a shake-up.” Wood was destined to be a nurse. She lived in the flat reserved for the director of nursing at a nursing home in Preston, Victoria with her mother and knew from a young age that she wanted to follow in her footsteps. “I was

Wood says it is frustrating that so many people don’t understand that nursing offers a rare blend of science, technology and a chance to display a more compassionate side of oneself in the workplace. People see nurses as displaying compassion but completely overlook the fact that they have a degree in science, she says. “The role of nurses isn’t that well understood. Nurses have long been considered as trustworthy and people see that human element that you need to work in this career, but the job is much more than that. Page 18 | www.ncah.com.au

www.nhw.hume.org.au surrounded by nurses and elderly people and I liked it. And yet my mother says she was surprised when I said I wanted to be a nurse when I was 15 and tried to talk me out of it. But I was sure.” Wood starting her career as a nurse in 1974, studying at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne. She specialised in perioperative surgery nursing and operated medical emergency teams before leaving the nursing frontline in 1999 to accept the role of general manager of surgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Care Centre. She was invited to step into the acting CEO role for seven months in 2003, which prompted the Board to offer her the role on a permanent basis. Since then, she has worked with government and other stakeholders on the $1 billion redevelopment on the Peter Mac Centre, writing the original business plan and taking a lead role in the detailed design process of

the redevelopment. The project has been allocated funding and the plans are awaiting government approval. Wood remains on the steering committee. These days, Wood is responsible for monitoring performance of staff at the Peter Mac Centre and holding the organisation to account. She oversees audit programs, leads strategy and development for the organisation and sets goals for the future. Wood is a firm believer of the importance of lifelong learning and is half way through a Doctorate in Business, which she is studying with the Victoria University, saying reading and networking is a vital part of the job. “I also believe that nurses should be surrounding themselves with like-minded people so that you effectively have a cheer squad around you willing to support you in your endeavours. It is very easy to be dragged down by negativity so that needs to be avoided.” Nursing Careers Allied Health - Issue 21 | Page 19

Tasmania nurses aged care education back to health Tasmania has unveiled its first teaching aged care facilities for nursing, medical and paramedical students. The University of Tasmania has joined forces with Launceston’s Masonic Peace Memorial Home and Lindisfarne’s Queen Victoria Home to launch its Teaching Aged Care Facilities program, to provide students with quality clinical placements. The program is designed to recruit and retain qualified staff in aged care, through helping students forge a positive attitude to working in aged care, equipping aged care facilities to support students’ education and fostering learning and research for staff. Program chief investigator Professor Andrew Robinson said the initiative would provide a strategy to develop the aged care sector to meet the challenges associated with the

increasing care needs of Australia’s ageing population. “The program involves a review and redesign of the aged care organisation, together with the implementation of quality clinical placements for UTAS nursing students, and for the first time medical and paramedical students,” he said. “As a teaching aged care facility, Peace Haven will have a new capacity to support an expansion of teaching to recruit new leaders into the organisation, drive the roll-out of practice-orientated research, and develop excellence in care provision. “This is the future for aged care.” The program, under the umbrella of the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, is expected to expand into more Tasmanian aged care facilities next year. Are you one of those people that has often thought about working in the UK and then said to themselves ‘sounds great but I wouldn’t know where to start’, then why not start with us. There are a few things that you do need to sort out before you make that leap of faith and getting them right makes your eventual trip here that much easier. I often hear candidates at interview say “but I registered with an agency in Australia and they never told me that I needed this or wouldn’t be able to do that”. It’s the little details that make a big difference and that’s where we come in. PJ Locums are based in London. We have been around for 10 years now and are pretty much the same team now as when we started so we all know what the business of finding people the right job is about. We are very thorough on our compliance and would ask that you collate all your information whilst still in Australia as it makes life so much easier and less expensive for you, such things as your immunisation history, many come to the UK thinking ‘Hep B yeah I have that’ but you don’t check and when you get here and your levels aren’t high enough to work in UK hospitals that’s what’s known in the trade as a ‘show stopper.’ Its been reported that there are not many jobs to be had here in the UK, not so for those candidates that fulfil the NMC/HPC criteria there is always work. Our best advice is ‘Keep an open mind and be flexible’ you can’t all work in London its just not big enough, but there are some great cities outside London that are just as big, just as near and just as great! At PJ Locums our view is that our nurses/locums work with us, not for us. Yes, you are the frontline ambassadors of our company which is why it is so important to us that we get it right. Want to join a friendly team that listens to you - then call or email today and make that leap. 0011 4 208 874 6111 julieanne@pjlocums.co.uk

Nurses march to fight dementia Aged care nurses and assistants in nursing (AINs) will march in Canberra on October 13 to shine the spotlight on Australia’s growing dementia epidemic. Nurses will join forces with aged care stakeholders, dementia sufferers and their families at the Fight Dementia March to call on the Federal Government to restore dementia as a national health priority. Alzheimer’s Australia is calling on the government to allocate an extra $500 million in its 2012 budget to improve dementia care. The organisation’s statistics show 269,000 Australians are now living with dementia and there are forecasts that almost one million Australians will suffer from dementia by 2050. The march coincides with the Australian Nursing Federation’s aged care campaign, which is lobbying for an extra 20,000 nurses to meet the demands of the country’s ageing population.

Pharmacists play key role in mental health Pharmacists are on the mental health frontline with new figures revealing there were 29 million prescriptions written for medications relating to mental health issues last year. An Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report shows anti-depressant medications made up almost 60 per cent of scripts, followed by anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic drugs. With an estimated 2.4 million Australians using medication to control mental health problems, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia states the figures are a stark reminder of the key role that pharmacists play in tackling mental health. PSA president Grant Kardachi said pharmacists often saw patients more often than other health professionals, helping them seek further medical help and counselling, through their ‘walk in’ service. “Pharmacists deal with patients suffering from mental health conditions 356 days a year. It is a constant part of the service they provide,” he said. “At the moment, with the myriad new facilities and strategies being put in place, there is the potential for confusion as to where sufferers should be directed for further assistance, and what services and support are available and where.” Mr Kardachi said the organisation provided a practice support program to assist pharmacists with the 5CPA programs, including the Primary Health Care and Working with Others initiatives, as well as a snapshot document helping pharmacists make the most of the 5CPA programs. He said the PSA also offered a mental health first aid course to up-skill pharmacists to recognise symptoms and help sufferers.

Oncology pharmacist recognised A West Australian hospital oncology pharmacist with a 20 year career in cancer chemotherapy delivery has been named the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s Pharmacist of the Year. The PSA awarded the accolade to Michael Cain from Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital at Nedlands during the Pharmacy Australia Congress, held in Melbourne earlier this month. Mr Cain, who works with the Cancer Clinical Services Unit, was recognised in the Excellence Awards for his outstanding contribution to the pharmacy profession. “This public recognition, bestowed at a national level, by the broadest possible representation of my peers, represents a very significant personal milestone, and inspiration for the future,” he said.

there is high respect for evidence based therapy.” Mr Cain said the award was also a celebration of how pharmacists are evolving in the health landscape. “Health care is changing and I am heartened to see pharmacists very firmly demonstrating their capabilities in quality use of medicines,” he said. Other contributors to the profession who were recognised include Queensland pharmacist Chris Freeman, who was named the Young Pharmacist of the Year, while Ezekiel Steindl was awarded the title of Alphapharm Pharmacy Student of the Year.

“Cancer medicine has proved a rich field of opportunity for pharmacist involvement and I consider myself privileged to be involved. “Cancer management is very much about teams and as such I have many colleagues and mentors to thank. In many ways I accept this award recognising their support and guidance.” Mr Cain, who graduated in 1981, said he thrived on assessing emerging information and consensus statements from literature, and introducing good practices into the treatment of cancer patients. “My greatest satisfaction (is) from finding ways of projecting good practice in the use of medicines through the diversity of medical, nursing and pharmacy staff involved in delivering cancer chemotherapy,” he said. “There is a collegiate culture within the field of cancer treatment (that) is wonderful, and Page 28 | www.ncah.com.au

Melbourne RCH sets new design benchmark Queen Elizabeth will officially unveil Melbourne’s new $1 billion medical masterpiece, the Royal Children’s Hospital, on October 26. The hospital is being billed as a world-class paediatric hospital focused on patient and family centred care, a premier workplace for health professionals armed with leading edge research and education facilities, and it will be Australia’s greenest hospital. The hospital is being built right next to the current hospital and will be situated on 4.1 hectares of Royal Park, as part of a plan to use nature in the healing process for children. There will also be a park within the hospital. A meerkat enclosure, featuring six males and three females from the Melbourne Zoo, are a highlight of the development alongside a two-storey coral reef aquarium, which will be the centrepiece of the hospital. Alongside a host of patient focused entertainment features, including interactive Scienceworks displays, playgrounds and a ‘bean bag’ movie theatre, the hospital will also feature sushi, a bakery, a salad and sandwich bar, a McDonald’s and a gelato shop.

Page 30 | www.ncah.com.au

Staff have not been forgotten in the design. The hospital will feature wide corridors for transporting patients and equipment while wards will be broken into clusters, each with a staff base and support facilities to bring nurses to patients. The hospital will also showcase cuttingedge clinical information technology for staff, around the clock security systems, a gym, supermarket, ATMs, 500 secure bike spaces with nearby shower and change facilities, more than 2000 car spaces and two child care centres. The new hospital will also conserve water and save energy thanks to a host of measures including an on-site gas tri-generation power plant, solar panels and a biomass fuel boiler that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent. The Royal Children’s Hospital has provided 140 years of care to children from Victoria and around the world. The current building, which was built in 1963, will be knocked down and revamped into parkland.

Nurses’ union to vote on same sex marriage The Australian Nursing Federation will discuss forging a resolution on same sex marriage at its biennial national conference in Canberra. The union will debate a resolution calling for the lifting of current restrictions under the Marriage Act to allow same sex couples to marry, ensuring equality for same sex couples, at its October 20-21 conference. The ANF will also debate a resolution calling for the “inhumane policies” for asylum seekers to be repealed, to prevent asylum seekers from being discriminated against in their right to access health care. Other items on the agenda include closing the wages gap in aged care and fighting the New South Wales’ government’s “draconian anti-worker laws”. ANF federal secretary Lee Thomas said more than 120 nurses, midwives and assistants in nursing from across Australia will attend the conference and have their say on the ANF’s future policy agenda. “The conference will give us the opportunity to debate a number of significant resolutions which will set the policy agenda for the ANF for the coming two years,” she said. “The resolutions provide nurses, midwives and AINs the opportunity to influence political outcomes for the benefit of the entire community.” The ANF has further cemented its place as one of Australia’s fastest growing unions with 214,000 members. Established in 1924, the ANF represents nurses in urban, rural and remote locations in both the public and private sectors, including hospitals, health and community services, schools, universities, the armed forces, statutory authorities, local government, offshore territories and industry.

Bundaberg nurse experiences ICU at sea A Queensland nurse has spent almost four months in a floating ICU, on board a charity hospital ship off the coast of Africa.

“Another was to master a basic understanding of Krio, the local language, even if I could not speak much of it.”

Ellen Venz, of Bundaberg, put her 13 years’ experience in nursing to the test when she volunteered to work with global charity Mercy Ships at Sierra Leone.

Ellen said it was also rewarding to work with some of the long-term patients.

Mercy Ships has operated hospital ships in developing nations since 1978, providing free health care and community development services to the poor. Each year, the Africa Mercy provides more than 7000 free surgeries at its state-of-the-art hospital complete with six operating theatres, 78 hospital beds and a crew of 450 people. It also features a range of off-ship projects from optical and dental to nutrition, community health and mental health.

“The patients included some who had been on the ship a few months before and returned to have bone grafted to new titanium jaw plates, following surgery to remove huge facial tumours,” she said. “It was amazing to see such patients after surgery, and compare them to their ‘before’ pictures attached to their charts.” For more information about Mercy Ships visit www.mercyships.org.au

With post graduate qualifications in intensive care nursing and work experience in Sweden, England and Alice Springs, Ellen had to raise the funds for her time on board the Africa Mercy, from covering the cost of flights to Sierra Leone to paying weekly crew fees to offset the ship’s running costs. Ellen had to quit her job, due to the length of time she would be away, so she moved back in with her family and ran a craft stall at local markets. But she said the experience of working in the ICU and in the wards of the hospital was worth it. “I consider myself as fortunate in being able to work one on one with people I could help directly. It was deeply satisfying,” she said. “One of my real achievements in the ward was to succeed in bandaging almost any head wound with my eyes closed. Page 32 | www.ncah.com.au
