Can IT lead to a radical redesign of health care? This is a very interesting question, since computers, the Internet, telehealth and other powerful technologies are making increasing inroads into the practice of health professionals. A number of trends are occurring. First, with the Internet, patients now have access to the same information, knowledge and guidelines as the health professional. Second, health professionals themselves are increasingly using the Internet for information and support. A third trend is the increasing use of information management technology by health professionals. Most health practices use a computer to some degree, even if they do not have a full electronic health record. These developments are shaping the behaviour of both patients and health professionals, regardless of how we feel about them. ‘Health professionals who understand information technologies and the impact they are having will be more able to more effectively incorporate them into their practice,’ said University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) academic Sue Whetton. Sue coordinates the E-Health (Health Informatics) program at the UDRH and argues that the study of health informatics is very relevant both for those faced with adopting IT into their practice and the health professional thinking of moving into the health informatics field. The program adopts a social focus, emphasising the people aspects of health information management. Sue finds that students thoroughly enjoy this approach as they learn the skills and knowledge of health informatics.

New continuing professional development requirements for nurses and midwives in Australia by Bridget Willett With national registration now in place for nurses and midwives in Australia, proof of continuing professional development units are critical for reregistration every year.

How much CPD do you need to do?

Although the new standards have created some confusion and consternation, nurses and midwives now have clear requirements for ongoing education. The process of professional development that has always been carried out unofficially in the Australian health system has now been formalised.

r BU MFBTU IPVST GPS SFHJTUFSFE OVSTFT

What is continuing professional development (CPD)? According to the ANMC (2009), ‘Continuing professional development is the means by which members of the profession maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives. The CPD cycle involves reviewing practice, identifying learning needs, planning and participating in relevant learning activities, and reflecting on the value of those activities.’ For those of you who are worried about what this means, consider how much active learning you probably undertake in the course of your work without even realising it. One hour of active learning is equivalent to one hour of CPD. Whether you attend inservice education sessions, contribute to research, participate in clinical audits, act as a preceptor or develop skills in other areas such as IT, the hours all add up. This is in addition to attending conferences, presenting a lecture or taking an online education course. www.ncah.com.au

Continuing professional development requirements for reregistration include:

r BU MFBTU IPVST GPS FOSPMMFE EJWJTJPO nurses r BU MFBTU IPVST GPS SFHJTUFSFE NJEXJWFT r GPS OVSTF QSBDUJUJPOFST BU MFBTU IPVST GPS registration as a nurse and/or midwife and a further 10 hours for endorsement r 'PS FMJHJCMF NJEXJWFT UIPTF NJEXJWFT XJUI access to the Medicare Benefits schedule), at least 20 hours for registration as a nurse and/or midwife and a further 20 hours for endorsement. These hours can be counted any time within the twelve-month period prior to reregistration. If you are not sure how many hours any particular CPD is equivalent to, then ask the association running it. Are you practicing as both a registered nurse and midwife? If you want to register as both a nurse and a midwife, you will need to complete twenty hours of CPD for both registers. While this may sound daunting, if the CPD is relevant to both professions (and many subjects are), those hours can count for both. Record keeping To make it easy to keep track of your CPD, it is a good idea to fill in a record sheet of

your activities for the year. Some employers will be able to provide you with a template, professional organisations such as the ANF have an example on their website, or you can devise your own. While you do not need to submit evidence of your CPD to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia annually, you will be required to sign a declaration that you have completed the necessary hours. Evidence of CPD attendance such as dates, number of hours, enrolment forms and payment, score sheets and certificates of participation need to be kept for three years, in case of an audit. Each year, the Board will reserve the right to randomly select a number of their registrants to audit.

CPD website CNnect and the ANF all offer CPD courses. Professional associations like APNA also provide links to courses run by other providers. It is in the best interests of health employers to support CPD. Many of the larger health services run a comprehensive program of CPD for staff members, with hospitals like the Royal Women’s Hospital and Western Health listing a CPD calendar online. Wherever you work, it is advisable to speak to your employer about whether inhouse CPD is provided and how staff are supported to achieve the required annual hours for reregistration Completing the right number of CPD hours may be easier than you think!

Tips for Rookie Nurses Starting any new career can be a daunting prospect, and in a medical field such as nursing even more so. Procedures, systems, processes and all manner of bureaucracy can culminate to create a very scary first year at work. Here are some helpful tips to help you navigate the start of your nursing career: 1. Ask lots of questions. No graduate or newly qualified nurse is expected to know everything at the start of their career. Perhaps the biggest mistake you could make is falling into the trap of thinking that you should know answers and that you will look incompetent by asking a question. This mindset could get you and potentially your patients into a lot of trouble. If you don’t know, or you don’t know where to find the answer, ASK! 2. Ask someone to observe a procedure If you’re unsure about a procedure that you need to perform, ask an experienced nurse to watch you do it and if necessary guide you through the process. This is a great way to gain practical experience. 3. Check name bracelets and allergies every time you give meds Patients can often say they don’t have any allergies, but when told they’re about to receive ‘x’ some suddenly recall that they do have an allergy. 4. If you’re on night shift – take your sleep time, meals and exercise seriously In order to get into a safe and productive routine while on night shift, it is vital that you apply a structured approach to your sleep time, meals and exercise. If you struggle to get to sleep, discuss the option of sleeping pills with your GP. Eat a proper meal in the middle of your shift, and don’t drink coffee in the latter part of your shift so you can sleep when you get home. 5. Prioritise your patients In order to manage your day and your workload, identify your treatment times and which patients need you most. You need to develop your own rhythm and system for managing your day and workload. Be sure to write down important details that aren’t logged, as you won’t be able to remember everything over the course of a busy day, and these details could be critical. 6. Accept that you will make mistakes New nurses will make mistakes. When you do make a mistake, you will need to accept that you are human, that you will learn from your mistake and move on. You will also need to develop strategies to compartmentalise your work and home life or you will burn out.
