Tasmanian nurses introduce bans Tasmanian nurses will up the ante in their campaign against State Government health cuts, amid fears the employment of about 900 nurses on fixed term contracts is at risk. Stop-work meetings have been held at the Launceston General Hospital, the NorthWest Regional Hospital and the Royal Hobart Hospital with nurses voting in favour of a 48-hour ban on overtime and double shifts, beginning December 14. Under the bans, nurses will not undertake clerical or cleaning work and will claim all missed meal breaks and entitlements. The State Government is refusing to back down as it attempts to shave $100 million from its budget; with its 2011-2012 budget sitting at $1.377 billion, up $92 million on the previous year. State Health Minister Michelle O’Byrne said she was disappointed at the bans and urged nurses to re-think their industrial action. “I respect the rights of nurses to engage in this debate and the rights of their union to take action legally available to them,” she said. “But my message has not changed and it will not change because it cannot change – we must act to secure our health system for the future.” Ms O’Byrne recently announced the government would honour its commitment, outlined in an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement last year between the government and the Australian Nursing Federation, to give the state’s 4500 nurses a 2.75 per cent pay rise, with more than 1000 receiving around a 4 per cent rise. Ms O’Byrne also denied claims that nurses are being sacked. For the full article please visit www.ncah.com.au Page 14 | www.ncah.com.au

Victorian midwife finds niche as cosmetic nurse A little over six years ago, Katherine MillarShannon was a registered nurse and midwife burnt out by shift work, which was taking a toll on her family. Today, the Victorian mother of two has forged a new career path as a cosmetic nurse. Katherine is now her own boss, with a thriving self-made business in the cosmetic beauty industry. Katherine launched her venture Youth On Call in 2005 and her mobile clinic now services around 30 beauty salons and wellness clinics throughout Melbourne, country Victoria and New South Wales. Katherine, who is still registered as an RN and midwife, is also studying for her masters in Nurse Practitioner and will be one of the first nurse practitioners to specialise in cosmetic nursing. Katherine said she loved her new career.

“(It’s) more rewarding overall – personally and professionally,” she said. “It’s also been great for my family to watch and support me through success.” Katherine worked at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in ICU and wards, before heading to London, where she worked at St George’s Hospital. She then moved to Melbourne where she worked as a midwife at the Royal Women’s Hospital, then worked agency shifts and later went on to work as a midwife at several Melbourne hospitals. Katherine, who works alongside and under medical doctors in her business, said achieving her masters in Nurse Practitioner will enable her to work more parallel with doctors in the future, giving her more independence for delivering anti-wrinkle injectable treatments. She said her experience in the nursing profession had honed many of the caring, service and medical skills she now relies on in her new found career as a cosmetic nurse.

Making the switch… Changing careers from hospitality to the nursing sector proved the right choice for two recent graduates of the Certificate III course in Aged Care, writes Belinda Smart. Now working as an assistant in nursing (AIN), Rebecca Morris (pictured) has been in her current role for around three months and is happy to confirm it’s a far cry from her previous job working as a barista. “I chose this job as I like being around people, meeting a lot of different people and talking to them. But I soon noticed that it was not enough for me,” she recalls, noting that while the “people” component was a major part of her work behind the bar, it was the caring aspect of nursing that prompted her to change career direction. “I wanted to do more for others. Helping other people in a way which makes a difference is what I desired. Nursing as a profession could give me the possibility to support others who cannot help themselves.” “I have always been good with people – it’s one of my qualities. Usually, I have a good connection to people, I seem to understand them and have a good feeling for their needs. Being a nurse lets me use this ability.” A relative recommended Casey College in New South Wales, which offers a wide range of courses and specialises in catering to the needs of “career changers” and Rebecca enrolled for the Certificate III course in Aged Care. “I really liked my studies at Casey College. It’s a really good program, not too difficult. It is also impressive how much you learn about Page 20 | www.ncah.com.au

your own body when becoming an AIN. For me putting the learned theory in practice was really important and exciting.” Her studies over, Rebecca hasn’t looked back. “I simply love nursing. I like being responsible for someone else, to care for another person. It is great to do something important for the community. I feel like I am meant to be a nurse. There is nothing I don’t like about it.” Aside from the personal satisfaction she gets from her role, one of the best things about entering the nursing profession, in Rebecca’s view, is the career path opportunities that have opened up for her. “I want to go as far and as high as possible. I would like to do more courses to get a higher degree if possible and to get more specialised.” For anyone wishing to change careers into nursing, her advice is simple. “Believe in yourself and have confidence! Even though it might be hard at the beginning, you will become more comfortable with your new tasks, the more practice you get. Good teachers make the whole process easier

as well. I was really lucky with having good teachers at Casey College. The teachers there are trained nurses so they are really knowledgeable in the field.” Another graduate of the Certificate III course in Aged Care at Casey College, Luisa Delana Wakanivia has now been working as an AIN for around a year, having decided to leave behind her hospitality career in Fiji, which encompassed a variety of roles ranging from housekeeper to waitress and receptionist. “When I came to Australia, I finally got the opportunity to study nursing. It was what I wanted since I was a child. Nursing could provide me with the possibility to grow and to develop new skills. It opened up my eyes in terms of what possibilities I have in my career.”

I simply love nursing. I like being responsible for someone else, to care for another person. It is great to do something important for the community. I feel like I am meant to be a nurse. There is nothing I don’t like about it. – Rebecca Morris

Having had no prior experience of the role of an AIN before starting her course, Luisa describes the work experience she undertook as one of the best parts of a training experience that proved generally rewarding. “The opportunity of learning something new was refreshing. It was great to learn more about nursing as I wanted to be a nurse since I was a child. I gained so much more knowledge. The whole experience was amazing.” “Being an AIN gives me the opportunity to take care of someone, to help others. I enjoy looking after the elderly so they can grow old gracefully. I like every part of it.” Career-wise Luisa says she’s aiming for a role as a Senior Registered Nurse, which she hopes to achieve in around five years’ time. “Being a nurse is a very big thing. It is so important to take care of other people who cannot help themselves. If you are at work, you have to take responsibility. It is up to you to make decisions about another person’s life and death. Their life is in your hands.” “When I was a teenager, I looked after my grandmother. From then on I knew what I wanted to be. I also often played nurse when I was a kid. It has always been my dream.” Nursing Careers Allied Health - Issue 25 | Page 21

Physiotherapist moves into better care A former Australian Cricket team physiotherapist has reignited his passion for working in the health sector with a new career path. Fergus Nelson worked as a sports physio for 28 years, including two years spent touring overseas and nationally with the Australian Cricket team, and had his own private practice at Forbes and Parkes in central west New South Wales, worked in Canberra, and was also the ACT Physiotherapy branch president. Now, Fergus is a franchisee of Just Better Care, an Australian network of locally-owned agencies which provides care choices enabling people to live independently at home. Established in 2005, Just Better Care offers services including personal, palliative and dementia care, nursing, medication and wound care, as well as domestic assistance and outings for social support. It now has 21 franchises across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and the ACT.

Trish Noakes and Fergus Nelson. 300 people each week, amounting to about 1100 hours of support services across the ACT and south east New South Wales, from Goulburn and Yass across to Braidwood and Batemans Bay and then down the coast as far as Narooma. Fergus said his business provides domestic assistance, meal preparation, shopping, personal care, social support, transport and respite through to high level disability support services.

Fergus said he bought the franchise after realising he had lost his passion for work and needed to find a new direction.

“There is so much I love about my new career,” he said.

“As is often the case with professionals, the options I had seemed fairly limited, often very closely connected to what I was doing as a physio,” he said.

“I love working in an area where the work we do has a direct impact on the lives of the people we support - where we can empower people to live full and active lives.

“I was looking for something that would use other skills I possessed and challenge me in new ways.

“I love being in a position to support the staff who deliver the services. For too long people working in community support have been undervalued and I love being able to provide our staff with a work place that values the wonderful work that they do.

“I am a person who likes change and see life’s journey as being about growing and developing.” Fergus bought the franchise in 2008 and now has more than 100 staff who support around Page 22 | www.ncah.com.au

“This is an amazing career in which I am constantly learning about both myself and the people I work with.”

Nurses face barrier to return to work New South Wales nurses who have taken career breaks to raise families are finding it difficult to return to the nursing profession. NSW Nurses’ Association general secretary Brett Holmes said new standards introduced under national registration, including recency of practice, are sidelining nurses who have been out of the profession for five to 10 years and are now wanting to return to work. Mr Holmes said there was just one three-month re-entry course available in the state, at the College of Nursing, that cost about $10,000. He said there were 25 scholarships of $6000 available for nurses to complete the course but the course was also in high demand. “We think there can be more effort put into assisting those nurses who have fallen into this unfortunate situation of being locked out due to the retrospective nature of this national standard,” he said. “There are good examples of nurses who have taken these periods of career break to raise children and were caught unawares.

Medibank Health Solutions has a vacancy for Regional Workplace Rehabilitation Manager, Brisbane. The successful applicant will possess in-depth knowledge of Occupational Rehabilitation and demonstrated frontline management skills. You will be responsible for managing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the QLD Workplace Rehabilitation team comprised of allied health professionals. Successful applicants will possess formal qualifications in an allied health discipline (preferably Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy). Please contact careers@medibankhealth.com.au with any queries regarding this position

“We think that there’s an issue there. They have not responded to our correspondence.” Mr Holmes said more needed to be done.

“While they are out raising their children they are not necessarily following the intricate detail that is being put out about changes in the national registration area.”

“I think it’s unfortunate that other nursing schools haven’t yet seen the demand to be growing enough or to see whether they can meet the requirements of the AHPRA and the national board to have a course they might be undertaking, to have a course recognised or accredited by the accrediting body.”

Mr Holmes said the union had also written to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia raising concerns about an issue of “indirect discrimination” as a result of the standard.

An AHPRA spokesperson said the agency and the Nursing and Midwifery Board had no record of receiving correspondence on the issue but were happy to discuss the union’s concerns.

“We think the Nursing and Midwifery Board should consider the issue of serious disadvantage to the retrospective application and we believe that there should be an extended period of special

The spokesperson said the board’s priority was to protect the public and ensure nurses have the relevant expertise to provide safe care.

consideration if they have been caught out by that retrospective activity,” he said. Page 28 | www.ncah.com.au

A College of Nursing spokesperson was not available to comment.

Committee shelves plan to use armed guards in Victorian hospitals Security personnel should not use firearms, capsicum spray and tasers as security measures in Victorian hospitals, according to the state’s Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee. The committee’s inquiry into strategies to reduce the risk of violence in Victoria’s hospital emergency departments has ruled against firearms and said while it disagrees with capsicum spray and tasers as a general principle, it stated “individual hospitals should have the power to decide what other forms of restraint and security mechanisms should be employed”. The committee has outlined a long list of recommendations including the use of CCTV footage in EDs and other areas to monitor aggression, improved communication of waiting times which is often the cause of frustration and aggression, duress alarms for staff and encouraging more staff to report incidents. Deputy Premier Peter Ryan ordered the inquiry after concerns were raised at the government’s $21 million plan to install protective service officers (PSOs) in Victorian EDs. The committee said introducing PSOs was “inappropriate and contrary to the good management of security in hospitals and poses a greater safety risk”. “The overwhelming response to this inquiry has been that under no circumstances should either armed or unarmed Victoria Police Protective Service Officers or any other armed officer be placed in Victorian Hospitals or emergency rooms to assist with security,” its inquiry report stated. Exhibition provides personal insight into Australia’s military nurses The pencil a renowned Australian World War Two nurse used to write in her diary, which became the best-selling book White Coolies, will go on show as part of a special exhibition dedicated to Australia’s military nurses. The Australian War Memorial exhibition, Nurses: From Zululand to Afghanistan, delves into the personal stories of our nation’s military nurses – from the first known Australian nurse in the Zulu War in 1879 to today’s nurses who are serving in conflicts and peacekeeping operations overseas. The exhibition showcases early military nursing uniforms, from the iconic veil and cape worn in the early years, along with photographs, diaries and personal belongings, including the pencil used by Sister Agnes Betty Jeffrey to record her life as a POW. That diary, which was rolled in rags and hidden with rats and spiders in an effort to keep it hidden from her Japanese captors, detailed Sister Jeffrey’s three and half years in captivity,

including her physical and mental battle to survive, her obsession with food and the deaths of her friends. Wherever the Australian military has served, Australian nurses have been there, close to the front line to treat the sick and wounded in the air, and on land and sea. More than 3000 Australian civilian nurses volunteered for active service in World War One with more than 5000 volunteering for World War Two. Exhibition curator Robyn Siers said among the highlights of the display were the stories encapsulated in nurses’ diaries. “They speak of hardship and adversity, but they also speak of great courage and devotion to the role that nurses play in war,” she said. “Qualities that continue in our nurses serving today.” Nurses: from Zululand to Afghanistan will be open free to the public until October 17, 2012.
