Education on the Show Floor

This year there are two education areas on the show floor, a demonstration arena with live animals and a learning lounge with classroomstyle learning. Learning Lounge - NCBA Trade Show introduces the NCBA Learning Lounge. These 30-minute “lightning sessions” will offer busy attendees valuable educational tips. The Learning Lounge is where attendees can stop in and enjoy informal, face-to-face talks and handson technology education in a small intimate theater like setting right on the trade show floor. Demonstration Arena - This area will feature NCBA’s Beef Quality Assurance program Stockmanship & Stewardship. These sessions will teach handling methods that improve gathering, penning, chute work, and hauling. Much emphasis is placed on ways to increase cattle performance by reducing handling stress, and interactive discussions show how cattlemen can actually shape consumer’s perception of beef. Other topics include how the principles presented actually have a significant economic — as well as “quality of life” — benefit when applied in a cattle enterprise. Cattle handling experts Cute Pate and Ron Gill will teach each of these informative sessions.

Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc.

“Steering Your Ship Through Rough Waters: Lessons on Leadership” Kicking off the 2014 Cattle Industry Annual Convention is the Opening General Session, featuring captivating speakers and important introductory remarks. Always a meeting favorite, the Opening General Session provides a motivating and inspirational foundation for discussions and presentations to follow. Captain Phillips

Keynoting the session is Captain Richard Phillips, the inspiration for the movie Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. The movie is based on Phillips’s book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy Seals and Dangerous Days at Sea, a fascinating and suspenseful recounting of the first hijacking of a U.S. ship in more than 200 years.

It’s the incredible story of a regular man who found the courage to lead his ship and save his crew while besieged by Somali pirates for five days. Phillips not only shares his compelling story as a “floating CEO” in charge of the day-to-day operations of a multi-million dollar ship and its crew, he also draws lessons from the dramatic events that can help you survive and thrive. He will discuss the vital importance of leadership and teamwork, combined with a belief in the power and potential of yourself and your team, as seen through the eyes of an unassuming hero who conquered one of the world’s most extraordinary challenges.

Archie Manning

This promises to be an inspiring and thoughtprovoking session. Keynote speaker is all-American and NFL quarterback Archie

Manning, who transcends his athletic achievements. People far and wide have been inspired by his warm personality, his drive and sense of humor. Recognized as a 14-year veteran quarterback and father of two Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, Peyton and Eli, Manning believes the greatest rewards don’t come from winning the game— they come from playing the game. His other principles for success are leadership, depending on others and being flexible. Manning takes these lessons, along with countless others, to inspire audiences to achieve greatness in their journey for personal and professional success.

2014 CattleFax U.S. & Global Protein & Grain Outlook Seminar Wednesday, February 5 8:00 am – 10:00 am

f

Sponsored by Purina Animal Nutrition LLC and Zoetis

New – this session is now included with your 4-day registration It’s becoming a global marketplace for beef. With China emerging as the world’s largest meat importer, Brazil continuing to expand beef production and India taking a larger role in the beef trade globally, the U.S. is part of a world beef market that is increasingly volatile. International forces are only one piece of the picture for U.S. cattle producers, however.

Corn supplies have increased, yet prices remain volatile. The effects of a widespread drought are also having an impact. So are changing U.S. consumers and their Randy Blach evolving demands. Energy prices and industry contraction are factors. Add to that an economy struggling to come out of a slump and large investor positions in the futures market, and you’re beginning to get the idea. We’re a complex industry. Always one of the Convention’s most popular sessions, this CattleFax seminar will explore the factors that influence the profitability of your operation, and provide a look forward to what cattle, beef and feed prices might look like in the future. To top it off, Art Douglas, Ph.D., of Creighton University will provide a long-term weather outlook. For cattlemen, it’s a program that’s always informative, and increasingly valuable.

The beef industry invests a lot of resources to make sure two important things come together at the meat case and at the restaurant: a variety of quality beef products and consumers who are motivated to purchase them. The Demand Outlook session will explore the interrelationship of domestic consumer preferences (convenience, safety, value, nutrition and health, and taste) with issues that impact our industry image and our freedom to operate, while also understanding the impact of global growth opportunities on the domestic market. All convention attendees are invited to this session but the Demand Outlook session will provide a foundation for creating the 2014 checkoff plan of work and is essential for checkoff committee members.

NCBA Federation Forum Wednesday, February 5 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

o

The Federation represents the 45 Qualified State Beef Councils that collect the $1 per-head checkoff, and their individual board members. SBCs voluntarily invest in the Federation and through this partnership; checkoff dollars from the state level are combined and invested to enhance national demand-building programs. Attend this forum to learn more about the Federation structure and gain insight into the demand-building initiatives undertaken through the state/national partnership.

NCBA Policy Committee Meetings Thursday, February 6 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

o

Here is your chance to meet cattlemen from your region of the country to discuss important regional issues and how they may impact your operation.

The 2014 Cattle Industry Annual Convention will introduce an exciting new era in checkoff planning. As approved by beef producers in 2013, checkoff committees are now based on Industry Long Range Plan core strategies and domestic beef demand drivers. This change reflects a desire for beef producers to be more knowledgeable about all checkoff programs and to insure strong cross-functional programming efforts by checkoff contractors. Specific scheduling will be included in the convention program.

Your voice counts! Those in the beef cattle industry are strongly encouraged and welcome to attend and participate in the decisionmaking that shapes the issues affecting operations. You must be a committee member to vote in NCBA Policy Committee meetings. If you are interested in becoming a committee member, contact your state cattlemen’s or cattlewomen’s association or state beef council. Committee and subcommittee meetings will be held Thursday. Specific scheduling will be included in the convention program.
