FEATURING KEYNOTE SPEAKER JIM ABBOTT FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2 | 9:00am-11:00am
2018 CATTLEFAX U.S. GLOBAL PROTEIN & GRAIN OUTLOOK SEMINAR THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1 | 7:30am – 9:30am
Sponsored by Purina Animal Nutrition, LLC and Zoetis Always one of the best attended sessions at Convention, the CattleFax Seminar will keep you abreast of evolving markets and provide domestic and global perspectives on the quickly changing livestock and protein industries. Come have your questions answered about cowherd expansion, export growth for beef now that China is open, and the outlook for beef demand and what that means for profitability in all of the cattle segments. Dr. Art Douglas will also be on hand to explore weather patterns and deliver his typically spot-on long range forecasts.
Sponsored by Bayer Join us for an inspiring and uplifting General Session II with keynote speaker, Jim Abbott. Jim was born September 19, 1967, in Flint, Michigan without a right hand. Despite challenges, he went on to become an All-America hurler at Michigan, won the Sullivan Award in 1987 and was the pitcher for the Gold Medal Olympic Team in 1988. Memorably, Abbott threw a 4-0 no-hitter for the New York Yankees versus Cleveland in September 1993. He played for ten seasons on four different teams and ended his big league playing career in 1999. Abbott has worked with The Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) on several initiatives encouraging businesses to hire people with disabilities. Jim continues to be a Guest Pitching Instructor during Spring Training for the Los Angeles Angels. Join us as Jim talks to us about overcoming adversity. To continue to move towards our goals we must be willing to adapt. To change, and mold ourselves in order to meet the obstacles in our own way. Using ADAPT as an acronym you can put together a powerful set of words that stand alone in their significance, but they also string together like a chain in an amazing way. ED CATION IN THE TRADE SHOW ST
CKMANSHIP DEMONSTRATION ARENA STEWARDSHIP
Panels sponsored by This area will feature NCBA’s Stockmanship and Stewardship program, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and the checkoff-funded Beef Quality Assurance program. These sessions will teach handling methods that improve gathering, penning, chute work and hauling on horseback and on foot. Much emphasis is placed on ways to increase cattle performance by reducing handling stress. Interactive discussions show how cattlemen can shape consumer’s perception of beef. Other topics include how the principles presented have a significant economic - as well as “quality of life” - benefit when applied in a cattle enterprise. Cattle handling experts Curt Pate, Ron Gill, and special guests will teach each of these informative sessions. COLT STARTING Watch one of the best in the business properly prepare a young horse for its first saddling and first ride. You’ll enjoy seeing Curt work with the horse’s natural instincts to gain trust while instilling respect and control. Even if you don’t break horses yourself, Curt’s demonstration is enjoyable to watch and offers many tips for anyone who handles horses. (Curt Pate) RANCH HORSEMANSHIP Join Curt as he covers the basics of a horse that is safe, effective and handy for any livestock operation. Whether you are a novice horse owner or seasoned stockman, you’re sure to get something useful from this session. (Curt Pate) HANDLING YOUNG CATTLE Calves often don’t think, act or respond the same as older cattle. So proper first interaction can make a big difference as to how they handle and perform as mature stock. (Dr. Ron Gill and Curt Pate) FOCUS ON THE FAMILY When it comes to working cattle, don’t forget your low-stress-family-handling principles, too. (Dr. Ron Gill, Curt Pate, Tammy Pate) CALF BRANDING No matter how your outfit brands, learn strategies that can reduce livestock stress and increase performance. (Dr. Ron Gill and Curt Pate) BQA: IT ALL STARTS WITH THE CALF! Handling and processing calves using BQA principles lays the foundation for success from gate to plate. (Dr. Ron Gill)

DR. RON GILL
Dr. Ronald Gill is professor and extension livestock specialist for Texas AgriLife Extension. In addition, he serves as Associate Department Head and Program Leader for extension animal science faculty. Gill continues to provide leadership in Extension programming related to animal well-being and low-stress livestock handling and assists in providing leadership to statewide programming efforts for Beef Safety and Quality Assurance programming. Other interests include beef cattle and equine nutritional management and value added marketing. Gill received the Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence on two separate occasions for his support and performance as a member of an Interdisciplinary Team implementing Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) program for Texas beef cattle producers, and for his contributions on the Beef Quality Assurance Team. Gill has also been recognized as the Specialist of the Year by the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association.
TODD MCCARTNEY
Rancher, cowboy and family man, Todd McCartney, manages the family’s cowcalf operation alongside his wife, Marianne, and their 5 children. Located in the rugged rangeland near Throckmorton, Texas, their cowherd is Red Angus based and their ranch horse program’s roots trace back to the infancy of the American Quarter Horse Association. Although Todd keeps their day-to-day ranch work close to western tradition, he implements cutting edge management practices that keep the outfit “punchy yet progressive… to remain profitable.” As co-founder of NCBA’s Stockmanship & Stewardship initiative, Todd’s passion for effective cattle handling creates not only a hunger to practice it daily but to preach it just a little bit as well. Despite his sunrise to dark-thirty duties at home, Todd cracks out a few times a year with team members Dr. Ron Gill, Curt Pate and Dr. Dean Fish to share with national audiences the techniques and benefits of effective stockmanship, good stewardship and the western way of life.
DEAN FISH
R. Dean Fish, PhD is the Ranch Manger for the Santa Fe Ranch and a member of the NCBA Stockmanship and Stewardship Team. As the Ranch Manager for the
Santa Fe Ranch Foundation, he works to develop problem solving research for his fellow beef producers. The Foundation also works to get kids outdoors through agricultural literacy, hiking, camping and learning about the environment. Dean also raises commercial Angus cattle and club calves. He is currently on the Arizona Beef Council and is a Board Member of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association. Dean has served in a leadership role for many livestock and service organizations. In addition, Dean has worked with Todd McCartney, Dr. Ron Gill and Curt Pate planning and delivering Stockmanship and Stewardship at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Cattle Industry Conference and Trade Show. Dean is passionate about spreading the Stockmanship and Stewardship message, as he has seen the benefits in his own and other operations where the principles are implemented.
TAMMY PATE
Tammy Pate is proud to be known as a cowboy’s wife. Born into a Montana ranching family, Tammy grew up with a steer-wresting father and sisters that “rode from the time we could barely walk.” Her grandmother instilled in her the values of ranching life, a deep respect for nature and the practical skills needed to succeed. Tammy married Curt and together they deepened their horsemanship and developed innovative and gentle ways of training horses, keeping the stress levels low on horses, cattle and people. Over the years, Tammy discovered yoga and its parallels to horsemanship.
