THE 2017-2018 REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY provides a summary of contributions made to North Carolina Central University by more than 6,200 alumni, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations.

Individual and institutional donors demonstrated recordlevel generosity and commitment with gifts totaling $7.1 million, including $2.2 million contributed by alumni.

Faculty and staff contributed more than $219,352 to the Faculty/Staff Giving Campaign.

Students are able to advance and complete their education at NCCU thanks to your generous gifts.

During the 2017-2018 academic year at North Carolina Central University, we recorded many achievements. I am proud to say that our institution is not just thriving, but soaring.

Among our noteworthy accomplishments was the awarding of NCCU’s largest annual, nonTitle III grant to a single principal investigator.

We also saw another outstanding performance by the Eagles basketball team that took them all the way to the MEAC championship.

A year ago we introduced The Eagle Promise and its six priorities and strategies and four pillars that we deem central to success.

Additionally, we were challenged to meet the Higher Expectations metrics set forth by the University of North Carolina System. With your support, more of our students are graduating on time and with a competitive edge in today’s global marketplace. We are also able to provide immersion experiences, leadership training and a number of other distinctive opportunities both inside and outside the classroom that allow us to deliver a truly unique Eagle experience to each of our students.

Our expert faculty and world-class staff educate our students for the careers of today and for industries that will continue to be in high demand. From our programs in the STEM disciplines, pharmaceutical sciences, social sciences and the biosciences, to our innovations in business, education, law and liberal arts, NCCU trains some of the best and brightest scientists, medical doctors, health disparities researchers, musicians, educators, attorneys and business leaders in the Triangle, throughout North Carolina, across our country and around the world.

Beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year, The Eagle Promise was introduced to convey our six strategic priorities, ranging from student success and community collaborations to campus safety and infrastructure improvements. DEAR NCCU SUPPORTERS, This year, with your help and support, North Carolina Central University exceeded its 2017-18 strategic priority goals, increased corporate giving by more than 7 percent, increased the university’s endowment by 5 percent, and raised $7,146,697.

On behalf of North Carolina Central University’s Division of Institutional Advancement, I would like to personally thank you for your ongoing support and commitment, enabling our university to remain a valuable educational asset to Durham, an asset to the state of North Carolina, an asset to the nation, and an asset to the global economy.

More than 6,289 donors contributed to the $7,146,697 total. And 83 percent of those gifts were in cash. Over 2,983 alumni contributions totaled $2.2 million dollars. These gifts empower us to realize our mission of providing students with access to a quality education. We prepare them to go out from NCCU ready to make an impact and to feel honored to do what you have done: give back so others can have the same opportunity.

he Chautauqua Heritage Society honors and thanks all those who have made a commitment to North Carolina Central University in a will or trust, life insurance or life income annuity or through the gift of real estate, and who have informed the university of their intentions. The Chautauqua Heritage Society’s name recalls the original title of North Carolina Central University — the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race.

Members of the Chautauqua Heritage Society have made the commitment to include a college, school, program or scholarship fund as a beneficiary in their will or trust. Bequests are not subject to estate taxes, reducing tax liability for their heirs. Gifts may include residences, vacation homes or acreage through a “remainder interest” deeded to the NCCU Foundation. Contributions may also include appreciated assets, such as stocks or life insurance policies, that offer important tax benefits.

THE GIFT OF A LIFETIME: Charitable Remainder Unitrust

Rae and Audwin Helton own and operate a successful geographic information systems company in Louisville, Kentucky.

The couple met at North Carolina Central University, graduated with the class of 1981, and had been in discussion about the best way to give back to their alma mater.

Then they heard about a new giving option – the charitable remainder unitrust. This type of donation provides a tax deduction for donors along with a stream of income throughout their lifetimes, after which the principal and income become fully available for use by the university.

The Heltons decided on a donation of $200,000, which in December 2017 became NCCU’s first gift under the charitable remainder unitrust. The trust is part of a University of North Carolina System collaboration that allows NCCU and its medium-sized peers within the UNC system to participate in donation vehicles that have financial-reserve minimums.

“We decided to invest in the charitable remainder unitrust because it seemed to be a good fit with what we wanted to do on behalf of the university, and it will provide continued support over time,” Rae Helton said.

Endowment Accrues Funding for School of Business

While working as dean of the School of Business, Dr. Stewart B. Fulbright often went

out of his way to meet student needs, even tapping into his own resources when the situation called for it.

Meanwhile, his wife, Della Fulbright, a Durham school librarian, voluntarily tutored students needing extra help with reading or other assignments.

“My parents were all about trying to help people do better in life, have better educational outcomes – better everything.” explained Ed Fulbright the couple’s son.

Dean Fulbright spent 36 years as a university faculty member. His passing in 2012 prompted his children to establish the $25,000 endowment honoring their parents. The Fulbright Endowment is a discretionary fund, available for uses determined by the deans of the schools of Business and Library Information and Sciences.

Ed Fulbright said he and other family members plan to make additional contributions to the fund in the coming years. And they hope that others who knew and loved their parents will consider doing the same.

PARENTS GAVE THE GIFT OF EDUCATION; Siblings Respond with Named Scholarship

Though neither earned a college degree,

James W. Boone Jr. and his wife, Viola P. Boone, placed a high value on education.

“Mother graduated high school, and father went as far as 10th grade before he was needed to work in the fields to help support his family,” said son James Steven Boone, of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Determined to send their own offspring to college, the Boones made sure all five earned college degrees – including three bachelors’ and one law degree from North Carolina Central University.

James W. Boone Jr. retired after 35 years with Atlantic Coast Railroad. He died in 2009 at age 86. That’s when two of his sons, James Steven ’66, and Reginald Boone ’67, formed the $50,000 endowment in their parents’ names to benefit students from Northhampton County, N.C. “My brother and I thought it would be a good idea to honor them for the sacrifices they made for the five of us and, at the same time, help other kids striving to get an education,” said James Steven Boone.

TRACK AND FIELD BOOSTER URGES Generations to ‘Pass the Baton’ Michael Lipscomb remembers the exact moment that he made an attitude adjustment about supporting his alma mater.

It was about five years ago, when two students walked into the North Carolina Central University track and field office to tell their coach they intended to drop out of college.

“Both young men said, ‘It’s because I don’t have the money,’” Lipscomb recalled. “That shocked me to the core. I decided right then I had to get off my duff and do something for the university.”

Lipscomb, a 1974 graduate and former track athlete, wanted to help out financially, but also elevate public awareness regarding the track and field team’s many successes and record-breaking performances over the years.

In 2015, he founded the annual Dr. LeRoy T. Walker Track and Field Banquet and Awards Weekend to honor student athletes and raise awareness of the teams many accomplishments. He also established the Track and Field Alumni and Friends Endowed Scholarship with a $25,000 contribution. Lipscomb says it’s his way of “passing the baton” to future generations.

ENDOWMENT ENCOURAGES Students to Persevere

Not all future entrepreneurs or successful politicians start out strong in their academic careers. Some find themselves facing an uphill battle, said Linda Pearce Thomas, an North Carolina Central University alumna and founder of Elderhause in Wilmington, North Carolina.

With that in mind, Pearce Thomas established a $50,000 scholarship endowment.

“I wanted to help the average student who is struggling but has determination to succeed,” she said.

As an Eagle undergraduate, Class of 1967, Pearce Thomas recalls doubling-down on her studies and even attending summer school to raise her GPA. The effort paid off; she eventually earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Decades later, following the death of her husband, Ferrold Windell Thomas Jr. in 2016, Pearce Thomas created the Ferrold and Linda Pearce Thomas Scholarship by redirecting a portion of her retirement income.

“It goes directly to NCCU, so there are no tax implications,” she explained.

She’s pleased to know their scholarship will stand as a tangible symbol of the couple’s shared belief that education is the key to a better future.

Malkhiyah Hudson-Hairston is Living the Dream THANKS TO SISTERHOOD AND SCHOLARSHIP Malkhiyah HudsonHairston’s interest in

healthy child development sparked her dreams of becoming a pediatric surgeon. Setting her sights on a career in health care led her to investigate North Carolina Central University’s course offerings in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“I wanted to attend a university that was affordable but also had a lot to offer for my intended major; NCCU is just that,” said Hudson-Hairston.

With the support of the Black Women in Sisterhood for Action Inc. (BISA) Foundation Scholarship, the biology major is pursuing her dream career. The BISA, a nonprofit organization, provided scholarship assistance to African-American women for 30 years.

The organization closed its doors in 2013, but left its remaining funds to four historically black universities, including NCCU. Hudson-Hairston, a Winston-Salem, N.C., native and a member of the NC Central Honors Program, says she’s thankful for the chance to earn a college degree.

“Being a scholarship recipient is a constant reminder that I can achieve my goals and be actively involved in academics without taking on a major financial burden,” she added.

ALPHA CHI CHAPTER of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Invests in the Next Generation

Eagle alumni who are members of

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Chi chapter, have invested in the next generation of NCCU students by creating an endowed scholarship fund.

Established in October 2017, the endowment offers alumni and friends a way to give back to the university while alleviating financial strain for deserving students, chapter leaders said.

The annual scholarship is awarded based on recommendations of the NCCU Scholarship Committee, targeting students with at least a 3.0 grade point average and who can demonstrate financial need.

More than 200 sorority members, initiates and friends of the chapter raised an initial $55,000 to establish the fund – well above the university’s $25,000 minimum requirement.

The scholarship program aligns with the organization’s mission of promoting lifelong learning by supporting endowments and other methods of assisting students financially.

SCHOLARSHIP PUTS PRIORITIES into Focus for Honor Student Mathematics major and University Honors student Hanan Ali described the Felton J. Capel Foundation Scholarship as a crucial component of her academic success.

An aspiring biostatistician and math professor, Ali received the scholarship to support her studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“Being a scholarship recipient enables students to devote more time and focus to their passion and wholeheartedly pursue academic success,” says Ali, a member of the class of 2020. “Students can work less and study more.”

Ali also is engaged with the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline STEM Education program and NCCU’s Dream STEM Scholars Program, where she conducts research and engages in other activities that enhance her professional and personal development. Her current research involves analyzing the gender differences of obesity-linked cancers.

The Felton J. Capel award is named for a longtime civic and civil rights activist and business leader in Southern Pines, N.C., who passed away in 2018 at age 91.
