Food for Ellen LeRoy Photography
Casey Futrell Photography
Finding the Perfect Cate
There are few things we are as proud of along the Crystal Coast as our variety of cuisine and the chefs and restaurants that provide it. It doesn’t matter what your tastes are, from contemporary to classic to southern, brides will undoubtedly find the ideal caterer to provide exactly what they’re dreaming together. Eating together, whether it’s a five-course sit down meal or nibbles you can pick up with your fingers and eat on the go, celebrates the union just observed and brings a sense of communion and sharing to the festivities. Years later, the food is one of the things people remember most about the reception. Food generally takes the largest chunk of the wedding budget, 40-50 percent. With that in mind, it’s vital that you do your research and take your time making decisions. Shop around and browse the menus before jumping in. Restaurants will appreciate your interest and sometimes even offer a special rate or unique menu items if they know you’re planning a large event. Many restaurants have special items they prepare just for catering events, so make sure you let them know what you’re looking for instead of simply glancing at their regular menu. We suggest you spend some time with the prospective caterer, talking frankly about budget constraints, the style of the wedding, location requirements and the food choices you’re interested in. After narrowing choices down, request a private tasting to sample their dishes. It’s also important to get a feel for the caterer – their crab cakes may be to die for but if they can’t handle the stress on the wedding day and become crabby with guests, it won’t go over well at all. Don’t hesitate to ask for references and actually place a few calls. Those who loved the experience they had with the caterer won’t mind sharing at all – nor will those who had a less positive experience. 14

Here are some other tips to remember:
•
efore you begin interviewing caterers know whether B you would prefer a sit-down dinner, a buffet or simple passed hors d’oeuvres.
•
e clear on your budget constraints and make sure B that there are no hidden charges. No one likes surprises at the last minute.
•
hoose items people are familiar with. While some C exotic offerings may be fun, make sure there is plenty for the less adventurous to enjoy.
•
nice touch may be incorporating some of the bride A and groom’s favorite foods. Or consider a touch of Eastern North Carolina by offering barbecue and the fixings or a clam bake.
•
Keep vegetarians in mind when planning the menu.
now exactly when a final head count must be K provided. Make sure you provide for your band or DJ and other vendors that may be on-site during the reception.
•
•
ake plans ahead of time for your caterer to prepare M a doggie basket for the bride and groom to take with them. It’s not uncommon for the happy to couple to go through their reception without having time to sit down and enjoy a meal.
•
tay in touch with your caterer in advance of your S big day.
•
emember to include a tip for service staff, including R bartenders and wait staff.
No matter where you have your reception, or which caterer you choose, make sure you enjoy the event by planning ahead.

erer for Your Special Event
Get the Facts
The last thing the bride wants to do is chase down more champagne, find a refill for a friend’s salad bowl or fish shrimp out of melted ice. And with a good caterer on-site, she will never have to. Make sure you ask all the right questions to ensure your reception is one guests will remember for the right reasons.
Can I have references?
Most caterers get their business from word of mouth. Ask for info on former clients and call as many as you can. Ask direct questions.
Can we sample from a typical wedding menu?
Make sure you know what it is you’ll be getting for your money. Take your spouse-to-be and a friend with you to the tasting so that you can get varied opinions.
May I see photographs of your table displays?
Most caterers include some décor among their food stations. Instead of asking what they use, ask for pictures so you know exactly what to expect.
What does the price per person include?
Is the cost strictly for food, or does it cover food tables, linens and table displays, etc.?
Are there any other fees?
Are tips and taxes included in the price? Some caterers will charge a cake-cutting fee or corking fee for wines. Make sure you get all fees in writing up front.
Do you offer cakes or work with a specific baker?
Ask if your caterer offers wedding and groom’s cakes, and find out if they are included in the price. If not, most caterers have a baker they work well with.
What are the payment arrangements?
You need to find out how much of a deposit is required, and if it’s refundable or not. Ask when the final payment is due and what the caterer’s preferred form of payment is. When you finally settle on a caterer, make sure you have a written contract to sign. This guarantees they will provide the food, timelines and details you discussed.

Location, Location, Location
Choosing a Venue for the Big Day “I do.”
Casey Futrell Photography
It’s the mantra of every real estate agent, and bride, across the country – location really is everything. With its beautiful ocean views, waterways, forests and hidden gems, Eastern North Carolina has a lot to offer when it comes to choosing a venue for your big day. From rustic country barns to royal, beachfront elegance, there’s a venue to suit every taste and style. For brides looking at outdoor venues, professionals suggest having a back-up plan with a secondary inside location just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. Some of the area’s venues already have a contingency plan in place, with room to move the festivities indoors in a pinch, while others do not. So make sure this important query is on your list of questions to ask while visiting sites in the area. The Crystal Coast has a plethora of rental homes along both the sound and the ocean that can provide a perfect spot for both wedding and reception with built in accommodations. Tents work great, too, especially if the weather is questionable. Today’s tents are customizable, allowing renters to create the setting they desire, including parquet dance floors, stages, heating or air conditioning units, custom fabric liners or ceiling fans. Any color scheme imaginable will look elegant against a wonderful white background. While planning, families will want to ask what ABC licenses a site has in place and which may need to be obtained for the event at an additional cost. There are many places, however, that take care of the all the planning for you. Many resorts, attractions and rental agencies have event planners on staff that can walk you through the process both before and on the day of the wedding. Whether you plan on getting married in the middle of tourist season, or during the quieter off-season months, most of the area’s favorite attractions are open and ready to greet your family. Here are some of the area’s most popular sites: Beaufort Historic Site – Located on Turner Street, the grounds of the Beaufort Historical Association provide a picturesque setting for special events. Say your vows on the site’s expanse of lawn and have your portraits taken on the porches of the beautifully restored buildings. Visit www.beauforthisotircsite.org or call 252-728-5225. Vows on the High Seas Looking for something a little bit different for your pending nuptials? Something small and intimate, yet elegant and exclusive? Adventure seekers Dan Meggitt and Kelly Gordon may have just what you’re looking for at Everest Yacht Charters in Beaufort. It was an idea the pair had as soon as they obtained the 80foot San Lorenzo motor yacht. She needed some sprucing up, said Gordon, but from the beginning the goal was for Meggitt to live on Everest and run a charter business from the helm. Meggitt – who named the vessel after a climb at Mount Everest – has lived at sea nearly all his life. The captain spent five years sailing around the world alone on a 32-foot Pearson Vanguard. Three years ago they first listed the vessel on VRBO – a vacation rental website that allows property owners to manage their own rentals – to see if they could get a bite. One came in almost immediately and that was all the encouragement they needed to make last minute arrangements and begin accepting guests. “It’s really been something of a whirlwind since then,” said Gordon. At first, she said, they attempted to create packages, with a variety of amenities, from overnight stays and catering to live music and flowers, but soon learned that everyone really wants something different. “So now, everything is custom,” Gordon said. “We can do as little or as much as the guests want. We work with photographers and
22
Bride and Groom 2016-2017
chefs and florists and can package it all in, we can erect a tent on land next to the vessel, we can take a cruise, do a ride away at the end of the night or we can stay at the dock and not move at all. With what we do there is no one-size-fits-all. Everyone wants something different, so everything is tailor made for each situation.” Along the way, Gordon has become a jack of all trades. A chemistry teacher at Carteret Community College by day, she now finds herself planning parties, contracting with bakers, hiring dj’s and cleaning Everest between guests. It’s a lot of work at times, she admits, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. “It’s not the path for everyone,” she said. “But people who don’t want that big flashy $150,000 wedding might find this is perfect for them – adventurous people who want to feel like a rock star for a day.” And nothing could be closer to the truth. Everest is a yacht, after all, with all the plush amenities that one would expect – a well appointed salon, full service kitchen, dramatic outside seating complete with a mini-fridge for keeping beverages cold. Four staterooms can sleep up to eight comfortably. While under way, the vessel can only have 12 guests on board. For a dockside reception, however, the number climbs, and as noted, larger parties can easily include a tent on the grounds at Front Street Village, Beaufort, where the yacht is docked. Bride and Groom 2016-2017
from the bride: Q. Why did you decide to get married on the Crystal Coast?
I have lived in California for close to 10 years. In January 2015, my best friend was getting married in Raleigh. I was a bridesmaid and Randall was a guest. We met at their wedding and the rest is history. We met in North Carolina, we lived in North Carolina (Claire hails from Hickory and Randall grew up in High Point) for the majority of our lives and most of our family and friends are there. Randall and I also both grew up going to Emerald Isle with our families (separately). Although we now live in California, it was very important for us to have our wedding on the Crystal Coast to be close to our families and friends. The Crystal Coast has always held a special place in both of our hearts. When it came time to decide where the wedding would be – it was a very short discussion. In our minds, there was no other place in the world we’d have rather had our wedding.
Q. What factors did you take into consideration when choosing a venue?
To be completely honest, we feel like we got incredibly lucky. We got engaged at the end of February in California. Our beach trip to North Carolina was already planned for May, so we decided to go with it and get married while we were already there for vacation. We had just under three months to plan a wedding! I spent an afternoon looking for available venues and reached out to a couple. It was important to us NOT to spend a fortune on a wedding. We wanted it to be simple and reasonable. Seeing the ocean from our venue was our top priority. Our final decision to go with Celebration Cottage was really all about the people. Every single person I spoke with at the cottage from Zena the planner, to Aimee and Denise (the chef) was incredibly helpful and sweet. Everything just felt right with the venue and the people.
Q. How did you add little touches of yourselves into your big day?
As a designer, I am used to being able to add small touches of my personality into a space. I am big on DIY to save money and be involved in the design process. I couldn’t really “craft” or put things together on my own in California to send as decor but we were still able to coordinate with the venue team to add small touches. The most fun for me, was putting together the bridesmaids gift bags. I ended up having to ship a large box to one of my bridesmaids in North Carolina with these gifts as well as our personal koozies for the guests. It is nice to look back at all of Casey’s incredible photographs and see that we had more small touches than we originally realized..
Q. What were the biggest challenges in planning your wedding remotely?
You would think it would be incredibly difficult to plan a wedding
from several thousand miles away. As crazy as it sounds, I think it was probably easier to plan remotely than it would have been if I were close by. Having a design degree and being a Type A personality, I had to make myself let go. I had to realize that I could not control everything that was going to happen from the other side of the country. I trusted our coordinator, our chef and our florist and I am glad I did.
Q. Are there any things you wish you knew ahead of time and didn’t?
As much as I did let go and trust the team we had, I do wish I had seen the venue before we got there. In hindsight, I didn’t really need to because it was beautiful and even better than we had expect. In the couple of months that we had to plan, I kept saying I wish I had the chance to walk through the venue to understand the style and feel of the space. It is a little scary to book a venue space without seeing it!
Q. What advice would you give to brides and grooms in the process of planning their special day?
Our #1 piece of advice is to trust your decisions you make along the way. Second guessing creates unnecessary stress. It may be cliche, but it is so important to enjoy the process. You have to accept the fact that you can’t please everyone. Relax. It is a very important day, but the whole process leads to a few hours of fun with the people that mean the most to you and your groom. Remember that! www.nccoast.com

Wedding Dress Silhouettes Ballgown
Few wardrobe decisions are scrutinized as much as a bride-to-be’s choice of wedding gown. Finding the perfect gown that flatters the future bride’s figure while stunning her guests and soon-to-be husband is a labor of love for many brides. The Bridal Association of America estimates a bride-to-be will spend between $1,500 and $2,000 total on her gown, veil and accessories. Brides often spend months, if not years, shopping for the right gown. Before the search begins, it’s important to understand the variety of silhouettes that are available and what flatters certain body types. After all, brides want to present the best version of themselves when getting married. Here is a look of some of the common types of gown silhouettes and why choosing this shape might be right for you.
Trumpet
Women who prefer something a little more form-fitting may select a trumpet silhouette. This dress is fitted through the body and then flares out at mid-thigh level. Women with taught stomachs and hourglass figures can benefit from this style gown, but those who do not want anything tight in the hips and thighs will want to select something else.
A-line
Another forgiving silhouette that works well for many body types is the A-line gown. A-line cut dresses should be the goto style for anyone looking to minimize perceived flaws. The cut of the dress will fit to the waist and gradually fan out from the hips to form the outline of an uppercase “A.” When in doubt, A-line gowns are classic and sensible and a favorite among brides.
30
Bride and Groom 2016-2017
A ballgown dress is truly a classic, evoking images of fairy tale princesses. With a fitted bodice and full skirt that flairs at the waist, this silhouette is usually good for all body types. Because the full skirt, typically poofed-up by crinoline, will hide the hips and thighs, women with a pear shape might gravitate toward this style. The ballgown style may not be ideal for petite women, as the skirt may overwhelm their figures Although a bride may have a wedding gown style in mind, it is a good idea to try on a number of different silhouettes to find the one that is most flattering. Bridal salon employees are usually well-versed in matching body type to a gown and can prove invaluable when selecting a dress.
Mermaid
Even more fitted than the trumpet, this silhouette is close to the body from the chest down to the knee. The skirt then flares out slightly by the knee. Tall, thin women generally look best in this type of gown.
Empire A balance between a traditional A-line and a more fitted gown, the modified A-line does not flare out as much. But it does flare out enough from the waist to hide areas around the hips and thighs. This is another good choice for a wide array of figures.
Tea length Brides who do not want a gown that reaches the floor, but aren’t ready for something too short may like a tea length dress, on which the skirt generally falls between the ankle and the knee.
Sheath Lean brides who want simplicity in their gowns can opt for a sheath silhouette. The narrow shape of the gown from the neckline to the hem will definitely accentuate the body shape. Therefore, women who are shy may want to select a different option. Petite women who may be overwhelmed by more fabric can usually wear a sheath gown with success.

Making it
Legal
While we’d like to think it’s all romance and lace that brings a couple together in matrimony – the long arm of the law actually calls them husband and wife. That means every couple must be armed with a license before saying their vows, and must register that license after the big day has occurred. In North Carolina, marriage licenses are obtained at the register of deeds in each county. Current fees are $60, and payment is required in cash or credit only. No blood tests are necessary in North Carolina, however, both parties must be present and all
applicants must provide their Social Security card (or documentary proof, i.e. W-2 form, payroll stub) along with proper identification (certified copy of birth certificate accompanied by a driver’s license or picture ID, a passport or military ID). All applicants under 18 should contact the register of deeds before applying. Applicants divorced or widowed within six months preceding the application date must present a filed copy of their final divorce decree or a copy of the death certificate. Prior to completing the marriage license application, parties will need to know their parents’ full names including mother’s maiden name, state of birth and current address (if possible). Marriage licenses are good for 60 days and there is no waiting period after issuance. After the ceremony, the license must be signed by the officiant and returned to the register of deeds office to be filed with the state. Certified copies of the document can be purchased for around $10, and will be needed for the bride to officially change her name. For additional information: Carteret County – 302 Courthouse Square, Beaufort, 252-728-8474 Craven County – 406 Craven St., New Bern, 252-636-6617 Onslow County – 4024 Richlands Hwy, Jacksonville, 910-347-3451 With a certified copy of the marriage license in hand, brides may take on the task of legally changing their surname if they choose to do so. The place to start is with the Social Security Administration. Our local office is located at 1420 McCarthy Blvd., New Bern and is open from 9am-4pm Monday through Friday. Since it can take several days for the agency to enter your new information, it may be best to wait a day or two before visiting the driver’s license and automobile registration offices. From there, with a new driver’s license in hand, brides should have no trouble changing their name on their passport or with their employer. It’s also a good idea to get in touch with your insurance provider, financial institutions, creditors, utility companies, physicians, post office, professional licensing boards, voter registration board, alumni associations and other professional organizations.

from the bride
Q. What factors did you take in to consideration when choosing a venue?
I wanted to have my wedding somewhere that was significant to both our families. Both Nathan’s uncle and my dad have been presidents at the Shrine Club, and both are actively involved. I know what these men do and how hard they work to raise money for burned and crippled children. Therefore, it was an honor to have our reception in such a respected establishment.
Q. How did you add little touches of yourselves into your big day?
We both wanted a rustic wedding. It was the perfect touch to show our country side through the use of burlap, sunflowers, wheat and black and white photos of our family.
Q. What were the biggest challenges in planning your wedding?
The biggest challenge was making sure we stayed within our budget. I come from a very large family, so making sure our venue could accommodate enough people was the most important thing.
Q. How did you choose the theme/style of your wedding and reception?
I love sunflowers! I was also inspired by Pinterest for some of our ideas. Again, we wanted a theme that represented both of us. We both love our country/coastal lifestyle. Nathan’s grandfather worked on Open Grounds, Down East, and my grandfather’s family owned a dairy farm, in Morehead City. You can’t really get much more country than that.
Q. Are there any things you wish you knew ahead of time and didn’t?
There will always be something that may not go just right the day of the wedding, just go with it. All your really need is great food, great music, great company, and the love of your life. Trust me, it will make for the perfect day.
Q. What advice would you give to brides and grooms in the process of planning their special day?
Make sure it is exactly what you both want. Find the beauty in everything; it is special to plan such a beautiful day with the most important people in both of your lives. At our wedding every person there had a history with either both or one of us, where memories had been made prior to this day. For us, a goal was to invite people that were truly involved in our life. This may not be important for everyone, but it was for us.

Bride and Groom 2016-2017
The Dress Bringing Your Dreams to Reality It’s the day you have been dreaming about since that first crush in grade school, and the dress is paramount to making it all you ever hoped it would be. Wedding gowns are as different as the brides who wear them – and they come in a similar variety of shapes, sizes and price ranges. Finding the perfect gown isn’t something that can be rushed. Allow plenty of time to plan before shopping and be don’t put a tight time limit on visiting dress shops. Brides should have a good idea of what silhouettes flatter their frame before they hit the streets with the credit card. Once a few silhouettes have been pinpointed, glance at large bridal websites online to get a feel for what’s available. Print out things you like and compile them in a notebook or create a wedding dress board on Pinterest or dropbox.com so they can be easily shared with the staff at the bridal store. Blogs, magazines, online bridal resources and large retailers are full of dresses to browse. And they’re great for helping brides solidify a style that not only suites their figure but fits well into their wedding plans. Be sure to keep an open mind, though. Bridal stores see thousands of brides each year and the staff gains great insight along the way. Be open to suggestions and if a salesperson seems convinced that a dress will look absolutely perfect on you, they’re probably right. Making at appointment at the bridal store is the best way to ensure that you’ll get the attention you need and deserve. This is most likely the largest apparel purchase a woman will make and one that can’t be taken too lightly. When you arrive, be sure to share your budget and images or ideas of gowns you like. A knowledgeable salesperson will be able to take that information and guide you toward gowns that fit your style and financial constraints. Be sure you don’t discount comfort. If the gown is itchy or heavy during the brief time spent trying it on, odds are it will make for an uncomfortable wedding day. Not only should the bride feel like a million bucks when wearing her dream dress, but it should be comfortable to wear as well. Keep in mind, you’ll be doing lots of stretching, hugging and, if you don’t have a second outfit during the reception, dancing.
When dress shopping remember to:
•
Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available.
•
Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean.
•
Wear your hair up, so it’s out of the way and gives you an idea of what it may look like on your special day.
•
Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day- to- day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers' size charts. •
I t's best to limit the number of people shopping with you to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing.
•
I t's always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes.
While it’s always mentioned when the gown is purchased, don’t feel pressured to buy your shoes and hairpiece in one sitting. In order to make sure you can accommodate the ‘do of your choice, it may be best to work with your hairdresser to ensure that you pick the perfect veil or headpiece to match the day’s hairstyle. Shoes, of course, can be chosen at any juncture. Just make sure they’re comfortable and that you have them in hand when you go to have your dress fitted. Nobody wants to have a floor-sweeping dress up around their ankles, or, worse yet, trip over a too-long gown on their way down the aisle. For the sake of both style and safety, make sure you’re positive about what will be on your feet before you allow anyone near your dress with the scissors. Do remember to keep an eye on the length, especially if you’re having a beach wedding and dreaming of getting your feet wet. A shorter style, at the ankle or higher, is ideal for the beach, allowing you to frolic freely without worrying about your big investment. www.nccoast.com

Bride and Groom 2016-2017
from the bride: Q. What factors did you take into consideration when choosing a venue?
We wanted to incorporate the best that the Crystal Coast has to offer, a forests full of 100-year-old oak trees as well as the ocean. Two of our favorite loves!
Q. How did you add little touches of yourselves into your big day?
We definitely wanted to be involved in the details without it looking too DIY. Having a handy “husband” really helped. Joe built the door aisle entryway, the bars, the dance floor, the farmhouse buffet tables and the s’more bar. We, along with Jerrye Gordon, spent months on the hunt collecting over 100 mixed matched wooden chairs as well as constructing the suspended floral ceiling. I also surprised Joe with a monogrammed ice luge instead of a groom’s cake in honor of his Bostonian family traditions.
Q. What were the biggest challenges in planning your wedding?
It was a challenge pulling off the whole concept. Our wedding was full of transitions. So the timeline was key. We had a small intimate ceremony then transitioned into a larger reception to celebrate with all of our loved ones. We started the night out with a band for dinner and ended the night with a DJ for hors d’oeuvres and dancing. This of course meant that I would need a dress change from my Southern belle ball gown to a sexy party gown. As if a five tier naked cake and s’more bar were not enough, we insisted that our parents each hand baked 200 of their famous mini pecan and apple pies. No matter how big the challenge, it was worth it in the end! #Nailedit!
Q. How did you choose the theme/style of your wedding and reception?
We love the outdoors so the location was important but I have always been inspired by the natural greenery, romance and whimsy of “The Twilight Wedding.” I have never been one to have a favorite color so it only made sense that I would choose a neutral palette with a little bit of sparkle!
Q. What advice would you give to brides and grooms in the process of planning their special day?
No matter how long you have been planning or how many Pinterest boards you may have I can assure you hiring a wedding planner makes all the difference. Stick to your vision no matter how small or large a detail may be, these are the things that will make your day! And the best way to continue to relive your amazing day and see all the things you may have missed is by hiring a videographer! It’ll be your favorite movie!

Stay Energized
A couple’s wedding day is the culmination of months and months of planning. For most, it is one of the most memorable, magical days of their lives, filled with fond moments of time spent with close friends and family. As enjoyable as a wedding can be, most brides and grooms who have already tied the knot can attest that a wedding is a long, often tiring day. It is very easy for energy levels to wane just as the fun kicks into high gear at the reception. To ensure you have enough energy to last through to the final good-bye of the evening, follow these suggestions to remain energized. Recognize your wedding day is a very long day. It’s not uncommon for brides to rise early in the morning to begin prepping with makeup, hair, wardrobe and more. If the party is an evening reception, it could last until the wee hours of the morning. You may find yourself up for nearly 24 hours, when the cameras will be flashing and the video rolling throughout. Naturally, you’ll want to look your best throughout. Get a good night’s sleep. Nothing can help more than hitting the hay early the night before the wedding so you can get ample sleep and look rested. It is understandable that nerves and excitement may get the best of you and make it difficult to fall asleep. Enjoy a hearty breakfast. At breakfast on the morning of your wedding, consume a combination of carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will provide the initial burst of energy you need to get going, and the protein will keep you feeling full. A combination of whole wheat toast, fresh fruit and Greek yogurt makes for a filling start to the day. Stay hydrated. Although drinking a lot of water can result in more frequent trips to the bathroom – which can be cumbersome for brides wearing their gowns – it is essential to stay hydrated. Dehydration can result in headaches, weakness and dizziness and may make
44
Bride and Groom 2016 2016-2017
you feel cranky. Be sure to consume water throughout the day. Pack some snacks. The time between breakfast and the cocktail hour of a wedding may be significant. In your wedding survival kit, be sure to pack some easy snacks to eat. Trail mix can be nibbled for a boost of energy, and a banana can take the edge off of hunger pangs. Avoid anything messy that can drip onto clothing or get stuck in your teeth. Arrange to have snacks stowed in the limousine or another mode of transportation so that you can refuel on the way to the ceremony or in transit to the reception. Don’t overdo it with caffeine. It may be tempting to lean on an energy drink or a super-sized cup of coffee to give you the boost you need. But caffeine is only a temporary fix. After the effects of the caffeine wear off, you could find yourself more tired than before and crash at an inopportune time during the day. Instead, a brisk walk outdoors may recharge your batteries. Afterward, time spent on the dance floor enjoying the reception will likely stimulate some adrenaline to keep you going. Eat dinner. When family is beckoning and the photographer needs to get yet another pose, it is easy to skip dinner. Be firm with your decision to enjoy your meal. After all, you paid for it and it should not go to waste. Besides, sitting down to dinner enables you to rest and absorb the atmosphere of the wedding. Continue to drink plenty of water throughout the night. Alcohol may be flowing, but too many spirits can compromise your energy levels. Be sure to balance the booze with hydrating fluids, such as water or juice. Weddings take up the entire day, and it can be easy to succumb to a lack of energy as the day progresses. While the formality of the wedding dress and the ceremony somewhat dictate the groom’s wedding attire, there is a lot more to take into consideration, especially when your nuptials are being shared along the coast. Generally men are more willing to participate in the selection of their clothing for the big day if it is something they actually enjoy wearing. And it’s safe to say that most men would rather not wear a tie, much less a tuxedo. Luckily, a beach wedding lends itself to much more relaxed attire for men, as well as women. Knowing exactly where the ceremony and reception will take place should always influence the groom’s fashion, as should the overall feel of the wedding itself. Will some of it take place outdoors? Is the theme coastal or beach oriented? If so, then grooms may want to consider something a little less formal and a little more fun. The temperatures are probably going to be warm outdoors, and the ceremony doesn’t always move as quickly as predicted. The groom may need to wait in the hot sun, and if worried about perspiration marks, he lightweight fabrics help them go unnoticed. Although dark colors are traditional for weddings, dark, heavy fabrics will absorb the sun’s rays, making the groom and his groomsmen uncomfortable. The groom and his groomsmen will want to be comfortable, and the right suit and fabric can make all the difference. Another important aspect of choosing a comfortable set of beach wedding wear is color. Look for light colors like cream or beige and white instead. Linen and cotton are all-natural fabrics that are made from plant fibers. They are much lighter weight than their wool counterparts. But linen and cotton can be highly prone to wrinkling, and a wrinkled suit will not present well in a formal setting. Cotton and linen may be best reserved for informal weddings or those that will be taking place outdoors or beachside. Seersucker suits are made from cotton in a unique woven pattern that lets air ventilate through the material, giving it a large following in the South where humidity can be overwhelming at times. Many
of these suits are manufactured in a gray, blue and brown striped pattern, although an array of colors are available. For less formal weddings, a seersucker suit may be the perfect fit. A khaki or tan suit one may work better if the wedding is more formal. The suit should fit well and be tailored appropriately. If the groomsmen are in coordinating suits, a tan or khaki color will not look out of place. If a full suit still feels too stiff, a nice blazer paired with a complementary colored trouser may be appropriate for a less formal. The groom may opt for a tie or bowtie to accent the suit, or simply let the collar hang loose in a less formal setting. Don’t overlook the footwear. Some people may think that going barefoot seems like the best option for a beach affair, but this option should be entirely up to the bride and groom. Be sure to let your guests know on invitation cards so they can plan accordingly. If it’s a bit more formal, the groom could wear a nice pair of sandals, flip flops or deck shoes. For full outdoor weddings, the groom may even want to consider adding a hat to their wedding duds, whether they decide to wear a pair of surfing baggies or a tux. A straw fedora or a Panama hat might give even the most informal outfit a sophisticated old-world charm. For a true casual vibe, try a tropical, fun Hawaiian-theme with light-colored, white cotton or linen drawstring pants with an opennecked button down shirt. A small bunch of flowers can be pinned to the breast pocket for an added touch. For something a little more formal, try a dark pair of khakis paired with a white cotton or linen shirt, sleeves up or down. A light colored T-shirt or vest may also be worn under the shirt to add an extra interesting edge. If pants seem a little too warm, shorts are allowed. Remember, it’s your day and you’re the one making the rules. The formality of the wedding is completely up to the bride and groom. Grooms have plenty of choices for beach wedding attire, and with a little creativity they can easily add a little sophistication to make it Casey Futrell Photography all their own.
