Welcome

The wait is over. The question has been popped and now you can start thinking about living happily ever after. But first, there’s that small matter of putting a wedding together. Countless couples happily take on the task of bringing together family and friends for the biggest day of their lives each year, and more often than not, they choose a beautiful destination like the North Carolina coast as their backdrop. And whether you’re traveling hundreds of miles for a wedding by the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, or just crossing the sound for a reception at your favorite restaurant, there’s plenty that needs to get done before you can say, “I do.” Here at the Coastal Event Planner we’ve seen a few weddings in our day, and trust us, finding a place to stay for the night, catering, entertainment, photography and transportation on the Crystal Coast can be a labor of love. So, to make sure you’re as prepared as possible, we consulted wedding planners, caterers, entertainers and more to compile this Coastal Event Planner, a collection of to-do lists, hints on where to stay and, of course, a list of the businesses that specialize in making these events run smoothly. So take a look through our table of contents, flip to each section using the color-coded vertical tabs you see on the following pages, or check out our list of advertisers and service providers, listed on page 52. Welcome to the area and best wishes for your next big coastal event.

Flowers

The Beauty of Being in Bloom

W

here flowers bloom, so does hope, but with hundreds of beautiful blooms all vying for attention, finding a flower arrangement for your wedding can seem a colossal task. Flowers play an important role in a wedding, adding a sensuous beauty to both the setting and

the wedding party. They can also be preserved, so the happy couple can hang on to them for years to come and remember the special day. But for such a momentous occasion, where does one begin? The first step is contacting a florist, and this should be done at least four to five months before the wedding date, especially if it falls within May to October, according to Gayle Campbell, a floral designer with Sandy’s Flower Shoppe in Morehead City. Campbell said it is best if the bride has an idea of what she likes before going into that meeting, and suggests looking through wedding magazines and wedding websites to get ideas. The next best thing is to know the colors of the bridesmaid dresses, as the flowers should be complimentary to those colors. “That will help us narrow it down,” she said. Popular flowers at weddings year round are hydrangeas, different varieties of lilies, roses, and of course, bright and summery Gerber daisies. If one pretty flower seems the same as another, pay closer attention to how they smell than how they look. Floral perfumes can be an excellent way to enhance any wedding. Aromatics like freesias, tea roses and jasmine are excellent choices, and if you’re looking for something a little greener, a unique take on flowers is to use herbs, such as the distinctive scent of rosemary. While Campbell said the use of savory flowers in arrangements is not common along the coast, the scents can add some spice to seasonal weddings, such as the natural cool fragrance of eucalyptus for fall, and even some Christmas greenery for winter.

For a little seasonal help, traditional Southern seasonal flowers include:

Spring

– dogwood, forsythia, foxglove, herbs, larkspur, magnolia, roses, sweet pea, tulips, wisteria.

Summer – aster, cosmos,

hydrangea, roses, rosemary, sunflower, zinnia.

Fall – bittersweet,

hydrangea, ornamental berries, roses, salvia, sassafras, sumac.

Winter

– evergreens, hydrangea, roses. While it is hard to beat the spectacular display and aroma of real flowers, sometimes they just aren’t the best option, particularly when someone in the wedding party has an allergy. The last thing you want is the groom to be sneezing his way through the ceremony. In such situations, consider silk flowers. While today’s

silk flowers are virtually indistinguishable from real flowers, the prices that accompany them are also similar. However, with silk flowers, the bride and groom can consider any type of flower imaginable, rather than just those that are in season. With so many arrangements, sometimes it’s hard to remember what you still need. The following is a handy listing of arrangements you’ll want to plan for: Bouquets: bride, bridesmaids, maid of honor, flower girl, bride’s toss bouquet. Boutonnieres: groom, best man, ushers, bride’s father, groom’s father, grandfathers, ring bearer. Corsages: bride’s mother, groom’s mother, grandmothers. Ceremony Flowers: main alter, aisle or pew decorations, trellis flowers or potters if held outside. Reception Flowers: head table centerpiece, guest table centerpieces, buffet table centerpieces. Rehearsal Dinner: table centerpieces.

Planning Say ‘I Don’t’ To Wedding Stress

S

tomach aches, headaches, sleep problems, poor concentration, moodiness, irritability, racing thoughts – getting married is supposed to be a happy time, right? So why are so many brides-tobe completely stressed out? Having to take care of endless details, manage vendors, handle family demands and meet the emotional needs of the groom – and fitting it all into an already busy schedule – can turn any sweet-natured woman into either a blubbering mess or the dreaded bridezilla. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way. Wedding consultants and planning experts agree that there are some ways to manage the stress and make the planning process more enjoyable for everyone involved. Expect stress. If you accept the fact that this is a stressful time, you can let go of guilt about it and take some precautionary measures to deal with it. Come up with a nonjudgmental code word they can say to let you know it’s time for a break. When you hear the code word, stop, take a deep breath and then set the planning aside for a while and do 16

w w w. n c c o a s t . c o m

something non-wedding related. Be realistic. A lot of brides set their expectations so high that they drive themselves (and everyone around them) crazy trying to meet them. But unless you have unlimited access to money, you’re going to have to adjust some of your plans. Don’t try to please everyone. It’s just not possible. Nor is it reasonable to try. The wedding is about the bride and groom. You two need to decide what is meaningful to you and what will express who you are. If his mother wants Cousin Jennie to play her bagpipe as you march down the aisle and you don’t care for the idea, it’s OK to say no. Delegate, delegate, delegate. No matter how capable you are, no matter how nifty your organizer is, you can’t do everything by yourself. Nor should you, so stop feeling guilty. It’s OK to ask friends, family and the groom for help – as long as you do it nicely. Some churches or reception halls have a wedding coordinator available to help with details. Also, keep in mind that if you haven’t used a wedding planner up to this point, some planners offer services for the final month to make sure you enjoy your big day, rather than spending it making sure everyone is lined up, vendors are paid and so on. Keep things in perspective. The most important thing to remember is that the wedding is only a one-day event. It’s just a party to celebrate the beginning of a life together. Too many brides feel enormous pressure to make the wedding perfect and they forget about building a solid marriage. Don’t lose yourself in the details of this one day. You have a lifetime of new memories to create, this is only one of them. Courtesy of Family Features

Hair & Beauty

Hairdos and Don’ts

W

hen the wedding march begins, all eyes will be on the bride. And for her to look as perfect as she’s always wanted it’s going to take more than a beautiful wedding dress. To bring it all together she’ll need to top off her look with makeup and a hairstyle that are as perfect as the dress. This is easier said than done, but if a lot of time and planning go into picking the right wedding dress, shouldn’t the same be true for time spent on hairstyles and makeup tests?

The Do

Whether it’s up, down, curly, straight or dyed pink, wedding hairstyles should reflect each person’s personality and personal style, while still managing to flatter and hold up against time and/or weather. Starting the search for this combination is as easy as calling your hairstylist to make sure he or she feels comfortable with doing your hair on the wedding day. Then plan a trip to test out the do at least two months in advance. That way, if things aren’t turning out how you had hoped there are two options: ask for a new hairdo or find a new stylist. Remember that it’s your wedding day, so don’t be afraid to shop around. For long hair you usually have pulled up and back, consider an elegant up-do that incorporates a design from your dress. For longer locks that are worn down most often, wear some of it up and away from the face to add an elegant look, and let the rest fall about your shoulders. Fancy clips or curls can really show off medium length hair. Don’t fret if you want to put it up—talented stylists can usually style it so you can wear hair up. Don’t be afraid to grow medium hair out if wearing it up is something you really want. During the process, work with a stylist on several styles to start planning early. Even for short hair, there are many options to make the groom weak in the knees. Curling can help give hair fullness around the crown and

back, but don’t curl the front or else you won’t look like yourself. Keep the front swept off to one side, and let the curls add an interesting texture for your special day. Here are a few other points to keep in mind: Play with a few styles before deciding on a final look. Keep in mind the style should hold up in an outdoor or warm setting, or over the course of several hours. The style should match the dress style and degree of formality. Match a veil or tiara to the hairstyle, not the style to a veil. Consider using extensions to add volume or length. Also consider decorative hair sticks, barrettes, bobby pins or other ornaments with everything from jewels to flowers to add a touch of fun or glamour. If you color your hair, touch up your existing hair color two weeks before the wedding, not the day before just to avoid any unexpected problems. Prepare a “hair emergency kit” for reception touch-ups. Hairspray, barrettes, bobby pins, and a brush or comb are all a must. Take care of your hair. Hair in poor condition can take six months to return to full condition.

Hair & Beauty

• Try

out sunless tanning options months before the wedding to find which looks best and most natural. Talk to your dentist about whitening treatments or whitening toothpaste for flashing those bright whites at the camera. Make sure waxing appointments are scheduled one or two weeks before the big day. If you’ve never had eyebrows shaped before, practice several months in advance to find the perfect look.

• •

All Made Up

Choosing the perfect makeup is always the most difficult, yet a fun portion of preparing for a wedding or other big event. It’s always a smart idea to experiment with the look of beauty items in your big event setting and take test photos before the big day arrives. While planning ahead, remember to talk with a dermatologist to start working on your skin and work with them to choose skin products that work with your skin instead of irritating it. Remember, you want to draw attention to your face for the right reasons. One of the easiest ways to draw attention to your best facial feature is with some subtly contrasting colors or shades. However, you’ll want the look to hold up over all those tears and kisses, so it’s a good idea to test out all the shades you plan to wear to see how long they’ll hold up. Also, wear waterproof mascara and any other longlasting or waterproof products. Here are few other makeup points to remember: Apply a tiny dab of concealer to the inner corners of your eyes to make you look more awake and vibrant. Keep eye shadow light to medium. Dark shades can look harsh in photos. Practice with different amounts and photos to see what looks washed out and what looks perfect on you. Go over pencil eyeliner with a matching shade of powder shadow to give the liner staying power.

Brides on a Budget How to Have a Fabulous Wedding for Less

t

he average wedding in America costs around $29,000, according to The Wedding Report, Inc., a wedding industry research company. Not surprisingly, economizing is foremost on everyone’s minds this year, but betrothed couples still want their weddings and the events leading up to them to be as special as ever. And with a little careful planning, there’s no reason your bridal showers, couples’ showers and, of course, the wedding itself, can’t be priceless yet affordable experiences for everyone involved. Here are some stylish, budget-friendly food and wine options that allow happy couples to have their cupcakes and eat them too. 20

w w w. n c c o a s t . c o m

Balancing the Cost of Wine and Food

• Revisit food classics that are guaranteed to please the palate but don’t break the bank, like sizzling mini-sliders. • Choose fresh and flavorful wines that present incredible value for the price but don’t compromise a smidge on quality. • Serving food in smaller portions is a hit for guests and a boon for the budget. • Use 3L wine casks for large groups, as each cask will serve up to 20 guests, each guest with a standard five-ounce glass. • Chill white wine for at least three hours before guests arrive. • Open and decant red wines about 30 minutes before guests arrive to allow the flavors to open up and breathe. • Be a responsible host and offer special nonalcoholic beverages and plenty of water for thirsty guests. For more wine tips visit UnderdogWineMerchants.com.

The Dress It’s possible to save big on your dress by choosing poly satin instead of silk fabric. Another option is to buy a discontinued design, rather than the latest one. These are usually less expensive and can be found at smaller dress shops or consignment shops.

Picking Flowers Do you really need fresh flowers blanketing everything? Many couples opt for fresh flowers for the bridal party and silk arrangements as decoration for the ceremony and reception. Look into candles, ribbons, shells and decorative stones as alternatives.

hey say your wedding day goes by in such a flash

that you’re lucky if you even get a piece of your own cake. Seeing family members and friends you haven’t seen in years, the excitement of the big day and the whirlwind of getting each part of the ceremony as perfect as possible can be a sensory overload. You’ll want to remember everything but your brain can only hold so much, so it will be up to a photographer to fill in the blanks and show all the parts you were too busy to notice. Choosing the right photographer is an important decision that involves a heavy weight of responsibility on his or her part, and a lot of trust on yours. So you’ll want to be clear on how you want to remember the wedding day and what you’re willing to pay for those memories. Formal photos are a wonderful and important part of the wedding, and few places provide as beautiful of a backdrop as the beach, among dunes or at historic sites like Fort Macon and Tryon Palace. Plus, local photographers often know perfect times and secret locations for formal shots. However, how to get photos from the wedding day poses a different question: do you want to have memories of your aunt and uncle smiling at the camera, them candidly laughing without knowing

Snapping Memories to Last a Lifetime

the camera was there, or both? This combination of posed photos and those taken in a journalistic approach are becoming more and more the norm, but there’s really no way of knowing a specific photographer’s strengths without looking over his or her portfolio. For those who can’t attend the special day, or for those who simply want to immerse themselves in each moment and relive everything said, videography is a perfect solution. Footage is easily transferred to DVD and even HD DVD format, compatible with most computers and DVD players. Many of the above tips for choosing a photographer also apply to selecting a videographer. Finally, one of the most important things to remember when choosing a photographer is to keep it professional. Although you may think about saving money by using a friend, unless your friend is a professional, consider going with someone who takes photos for a living. The pictures will end up being memories, so you want them to be absolutely perfect. Besides, your friend would probably rather be able to enjoy the wedding and share your day instead of working for you.

Photographer Checklist

Always ask to view a portfolio of event photographs. Often photographers have these posted to a website. If planning an outdoor event or wedding, ask about the photographer’s experience with outdoor venues like a sunset ceremony.

Ask about rates. Does the photographer charge by the hour or charge a set fee? What type of camera is used and what is the policy should something go wrong with the photos?

Ask about set photo packages and if your selection options (photo sizes, etc.) can be customized, and if the photos can also be provided on DVD. Also ask for the rights to the images for reproduction - some photographers hand them over, and others may charge for this.

Consider several photographers before making your choice. You may be impressed with the first photographer you meet; but you may be left speechless by the third.

he best day of your life deserves the best ride of your life – and along the coast, that ride doesn’t have to be limited to road travel. Whether by stretched limousine, boat, a sports car rented for the day, horse and buggy or a romantic ride into the sunset on beach cruisers, transportation on the day of your big event is a chance to exit and enter in style. Traditionally, white or black stretch limousines are the vehicles of choice for a bride, groom and the wedding party. One limo seats several people and they are usually easy to find for rent, providing a classy way to get from the hair salon to the ceremony and to the reception location. But that traditional limo is far from the only option out there. Have a big wedding party? Then think about using a super-stretch Humvee or even a party bus, replete with a dance floor, karaoke, full bar and a laser light show. Of course, if you want to take your guests breath away and share an intimate, memorable moment together, it’s hard to beat a horse-drawn carriage. Or, if you are having your wedding on the

water, why not pull up in a pirate piloted boat, or jet away on a jet ski? Whatever you do, don’t forget about your guests. While springing for several limos doesn’t make much financial sense, remember that many companies offer additional taxi, bus and minivan services. Make sure to ask your limo company for combination deals, ensuring that everyone in your party makes it home safely.

Serving Up Food for Thought

t seems every time family and friends get together they eventually end up in the kitchen laughing and talking around food. Weddings are no different (minus the kitchen of course). Sure, guests are eager to watch their family or loved ones tie the knot but sooner or later they’ll be hungry and nobody wants a guest list full of hungry, cranky people. That’s why it’s always important to make sure you’ve prepared, asked the right questions and tested everything out before your big wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, bridesmaid luncheon, family reunion or any other major event where people will be expecting a little food and drink. At a time when everyone is looking to cut costs and trim a little fat off their budget, this is one area where you need to decide what’s more valuable: stressing in the days leading up to the big event, or saving money on the big event so a professional can stress over feeding a hundred people or more. Trying to do both is possible but far from easy. For some ideas check out our special “Brides on a Budget” section on page 20. Of course, hiring a caterer is the easier way to go and if that’s the route you want to take, con32

sider the options of catering supplied by a venue, traveling to the restaurant/caterer or having the caterer bring food to your site. When having an event catered at a local restaurant, shop around and ask for menus. Local restaurants will appreciate your interest and sometimes even offer a special rate, setting or unique menu items if they know you’re considering bringing a large party to their establishment. For catering at off-site locations, research several caterers or restaurants in the area. Spend time with them and talk frankly about your budget constraints, the style of catering desired, the location and any requirements, and the food choices you’re interested in. After narrowing choices down, request a private tasting to sample offerings and view the presentation. Popular reception offerings are heavy hors d’oeuvres, buffet with carving stations for selections of ham, turkey, prime rib or lamb, or a “family style” seated dinner. Hors d’oeuvres and buffets are traditionally thought of as being more economical, but individual caterers differ in pricing. You should ask caterers for other unique offers, special Southern fare, or specialties of the house. For a local touch on an event, consider including tastes of Coastal North Carolina like a pig pickin’, clambake or traditional Southern barbeque. Seafood lovers have many menu choices, and using local seafood may actually help to save money. Area restaurants and caterers often specialize in fresh seafood dishes, so ask for seasonal menu options. Fresh seafood can be prepared in almost any way from fried and grilled to broiled, and presented very formally with dipping sauces and other embellishments. Make sure when talking to proposed caterers that they are clear on the date, time of reception, location, number of guests expected, type of service and your absolute limit on charges per guest. Costs are usually quoted per guest – or if the event is buffet-style, on the largest number of people expected. Always ask for quotes and confirmation in writing and keep copies in a safe location.

Ask when final notice of head counts are required, how much deposit needs to be paid, and by when. Be clear on when the final bill needs to be settled. Also ask whether caterers take care of the serving and the clearing. For off-site catering, confirm kitchen facilities that caterers may need with the event location. Often caterers need to enter the location and work in the kitchen one or two hours early.

Can we sample from a typical wedding menu? Catering can be a large part of your wedding budget. Make sure you know what it is you’ll be getting for your money. Take your spouse-to-be and a friend with you to the tasting so that you can get varied opinions. May I see photographs of your table displays? Some caterers who provide buffets or food stations

Ask for at least 10 former clients and call as many as you can. Ask questions such as: * Was the caterer easy to work with? * Was the service efficient and non-intrusive? * Was the food delicious, and did it arrive hot? * Were there any problems that came up and how did the caterer deal with them? Do you have a business license and liability insurance? Caterers should be licensed by the state. Usually licenses are displayed in the office, but if you’re not positive, then ask to see it. Make sure you see proof of liability insurance as well.

In fact, today, everybody seems to be doing something different. “The biggest trend is that everyone is trying to be an individual,” said wedding cake designer Kathy Canby, owner of Kathy Canby Cakes. Unlike cakes of yore, brides want their deserts not only to be dazzling to look at, but delicious to taste. As such, Canby is making more chocolate, strawberry and butter pecan cakes to stimulate the taste buds below the icing. Also, the cake’s layers once were all round. Today they are just as often square, oblong or a mixture of geometrical shapes. One of the most obvious places to separate your cake from the rest is in the frosting. While 36

e it the beauty, the tranquility, the majesty or the mystery, man is drawn to the water. The sounds of waves lapping gently against the beach, views of the sun falling on an endless horizon, or the feel of sand in between toes, the coast is a magical place that can provide the perfect background for two people who want to declare their love to each other. But while you may have decided that you want to announce your nuptials along North Carolina’s coast, there are still many ruffles that need to be ironed out to make sure your big day is as spellbinding as the surroundings.

The Perfect Spot

When preparing for a wedding, there are typically three major events that will require site planning. First, there’s the rehearsal dinner. Many area restaurants can accommodate your party at their site and likely have or can obtain the necessary permits to serve alcohol if you choose to do so. If you plan to have the dinner at an outdoor location, private home or other venue, restaurants and caterers can still take care of all the food you need, and in some cases help you serve it to your guests for an additional fee. Make sure you or the caterer has all the necessary silverware, dishes, tables and 44

w w w. n c c o a s t . c o m

other items necessary to satisfy the number of guests. The second event is the actual wedding, and picking a site for this is probably among the most difficult of decisions. Take into account the number of people you are inviting, the formality you wish to maintain for the event and, of course, the weather. If you’re planning an outdoor event, it’s a good idea to have a back-up location that’s indoors. Remember that both the hurricane season and the wedding season both reach their peak around the same time. One of the more popular backups is having the reception area ready to double as the ceremony location. Beach weddings are always popular in North Carolina because of the unique backdrop an ocean, sound or river provides. Still, there are a few things to keep in mind. Some locations, like Fort Macon, have permit requirements and stipulations on the number of chairs allowed. And, if you’re holding the ceremony on the beach, remember that it can be incredibly hot in the summer and the sound of crashing waves can overpower those speaking at the ceremony. A local tech company would be glad to help you out with that last problem, supplying some wireless microphones and speakers so everyone can be heard loud and clear. Keep in mind that the size of the location needs to be reasonable for the number of guests you are expecting. Typically about half to two-thirds of the invited guests will attend, so the location should be large enough to accommodate this number of people, but small enough so that the atmosphere remains intimate. Have questions about how to arrange a wedding at a waterfront location or how to contact a minister or other individual to conduct the ceremony? Tourism Authority at 1-800-SUNNYNC or visit crystalcoastnc.org. Contact the Craven County Convention and Visitor Center at 1-800-4375767 or visit newbern.com. The final location to consider is the reception. It may take place at the same site as the wedding or at a different location altogether. Things to take into account here are the ease of driving from the wedding site to the reception and also the formality of the event or lack thereof. There’s also the convenience and cost-cutting route of decorating and renting just one location. However, holding a reception in a different location also has an advantage. If the wedding is on the beach, a new location can keep sand from blowing into the hors d’oeuvres and wedding cake. Every site begins as a blank palette waiting for inspiration and decoration. No matter how bare a backyard, back porch, reception hall, outdoor tent or any other site may seem in the beginning, supplies and rentals, combined with guests dressed in their wedding best, will transform any space into a dream come true.

Tents for Rent

One of the more convenient options for large gatherings is renting an outdoor tent. If ever there was a blank canvas, this is it. Not only can a tent provide an indoor-outdoor setting, inside the walls you customize the decorations to match exactly what you want: parquet dance floors, stages for

Though you may have found the perfect coastal location, the perfect minister and of course the perfect partner, there are still many details you must remember to host a successful wedding. Take into account rental items such as candelabras, candles, archways, flower stands, beautiful table clothes and table accessories, and comfortable chairs. For receptions, dinners and other events, vital rental items are dishes and silverware, tables and chairs, linens, lights, extension cords, favors and perhaps a bar. It’s important to make a list of all the supplies you’ll need for each event and make sure it is frequently updated so none of the purchases overlap. In some cases, wedding planners can help with discounts and reducing shipping costs on these items, or even get sample fabrics sent to you at little to no cost. Another good idea is to let several people look over your list of must-haves. You’ll be surprised and thankful for what other people think of that you might not.

Entertainment

Let the Fun Begin

t

he vows have been said. You are now husband and wife. The weather was beautiful, the setting was perfect, and everything went off without a hitch.

Now it’s time to party.

The primary entertainment at most any wedding reception is the music, and for that you have two main options: live band or DJ. A good way to keep guests with varied musical tastes entertained is to hire a DJ; however, there are many excellent performers along the coast who specialize in everything from classic rock to folk to classical music. As with flowers, catering and photographers, it’s a good idea to line up a band or DJ early, particularly if your wedding is on a weekend. It is also important to line up certain music for certain times, such as the bride and groom’s first dance, the wedding party dance, father and bride’s dance and even the mother and groom dance. You also don’t want your best dance music playing while everyone is still eating. Check out the set list beforehand so you know what songs will be played, and decide up front whether the musicians or DJ should take requests. Don’t want the Chicken Song played? That’s something you need to make sure the DJ knows, because sooner or later that suggestion will come their way. And if guests are calling out for an encore, make sure the musicians know who is authorized to keep them playing. More hours often means more money. Fees for musicians vary, and it helps if the planner is up front about what they need before discussing a price. Do you want the musicians to play 50

Simon Spalding, of the band Tuppence, also recommends not waiting to the end of the event to pay the band. “I really appreciate it when the person responsible discreetly hands me my check in an envelope before things get started,” Spalding said. “I’m already there, I’m not going to leave … now I can relax and focus on the music.” Of course, entertainment doesn’t have to begin and end with just music. There are other options. One thing to keep in mind is that some of your guests may not know anybody else at the party but you. For those people, it’s a good idea to introduce some interactive entertainment to bring guests together. Ideas include hiring a dance instructor to teach guests how to do the meringue, polka or tango. Not only will this get people talking, but it will help bring more people out to the dance floor later. Another idea is hiring a caricaturist to draw portraits of your family and friends that they can take home. Worried some might take it the wrong way? Rent a photo booth. Everybody’s dressed up for a wedding and this will provide the perfect opportunity for them to capture a special moment with old and new friends. For something a little out of the ordinary, hire a magician to put on a show during dinner, or a fire eater to heat things up. Finally, young children sometimes fail to grasp the significance of a wedding. Providing plenty of crayons and paper is a surefire way to keeping them entertained and out of trouble, and allowing the grown-ups a little more time to act like kids again.

efore settling down on a dress, food, entertainment, jewelry or any of the countless other decisions that go along with a wedding, the engaged couple must first decide when and where the special day will take place. Once that’s done, it’s time to start thinking about “save the date” cards and invitations. Traditionally, invitations should go out to friends and family at least six weeks ahead of time. However, when you tack on the time it takes to pick a design and get it printed, you could be adding on another month to your schedule. Part of the reason is the actual printing, while another is trying to narrow down all the design choices you can make. That’s why it’s best to decide on “save the date” cards as soon as possible. Often less formal and even playful, with options like magnets for the refrigerator or pictures of the happy couple, less stress goes into making this decision. Have fun with “save the dates” by contacting a printing company or search online for services that allow you to build your own. When using a professional printer, ask for samples of paper (to include colors, sizes, various folders, materials, weight and more), envelopes and font styles. Also ask to see the printer’s collection of graphic elements, which can range from classic decorative designs to water or beach-related decorations. Some shops have pre-embossed invitations but when ordering an embossed item from a printing company, be prepared to add at least another two weeks to your order. When thinking about your printing needs for an event or party, consider the following commonly-needed items, and although you don’t have to order everything at one time, it is a nice touch for all printed materials to maintain a consistency of style and materials: invitations, RSVP cards, envelopes, event programs, place cards, maps and “Thank You” notes. And always request a proof prior to your items being printed. Once the proof is in your hand, read it several times and then pass it on to someone else to read so you can make sure everything is print perfect.
