THE Beach From Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five beach towns that dot Bogue Banks, to Emerald Isle, the largest, visitors find mile after mile of sun, sand and surf. The collection of communities feature a variety of accommodations, restaurants and shopping. The area, while limited in full-time population, swells each summer as second home owners and vacationers make the trek to the shore. BIKING THE BANKS: Spring is a great time for a leisurely bike ride. And this one is a perfect option for getting to know the area. The annual Bike the Banks event organized through Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation includes three rides along Bogue Banks and beyond – a 10-mile ride, 50-mile and a whopping 100-mile pedal to Harkers Island. Planned for Saturday, May 5, the first ride departs at 7:30am. Learn more by emailing mrt@ec.rr.com. KAYAK FOR THE WARRIORS:Pine Knoll Shores’ signature Kayak for the Warrior event welcomes its first event of the year on Saturday, May 26 – the 5K Beach Run and 1K Fun Run/Walk. Cost to register is $15-$25 and registration is being handled by www.runtheeast. com. If the kayak race planned for Saturday, June 2, is more your speed, be prepared for a whole lot of fun. Both kayakers and paddle boarders are welcome in this family friendly event. Learn more at k4tw.org.

START OF THE SEASON: Welcome the official start of summer on Atlantic Beach on Saturday, May 26. The town marks the Memorial Day weekend each year with a rousing fireworks display at 9pm at the Circle. Chairs and blankets are welcome, however, guests are asked to leave dogs and glass containers at home. LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND: People often remember their history classes as boring and dry. Fort Macon State Park will change some of that Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22 during its popular Living History Weekend. The First NC Volunteers/11th NC Regiment and other reenactment groups will bring the Civil War era to life from 10am-4pm each day, offering visitors a glimpse back in time. Here, history is more than a lesson in a textbook – it’s a weekend long example that one can question and touch and explore first hand. 8

Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come

to the National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. We’re always excited that the first round of big events along the Crystal Coast each year bring the opportunity to take in great some live music. From much loved traditional beach music to something little more funky, it’s time to dust off those dancing shoes in preparation for the upcoming music festivals and performances. April 28-29, White Oak Shores Camping and RV Resort, off of Highway 58 in Stella, hosts its White Oak Shores Bluegrass Festival. Want to camp and make a weekend of it? Special packages are available for the weekend. Camping, however, is not required for a day pass. Tickets are $25 per day or $40 for both days. Guests are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and comfort items to enjoy the shows at the site’s amphitheater. Food will be available on site. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit whiteoakshores.com. Always a favorite, the Beaufort Music Festival returns May 18-19. The festival, now held at the Beaufort Historic Site on Turner Street and cozy Middle Lane, provides a great opportunity to enjoy rousing sets of free music over the course of two days. Things kick off around 4pm on Friday, May 19, and run from 11am to 10pm on Saturday, May 20. This year’s lineup includes Matt Walsh & the Movers, Kate Rhudy, L Shape Lot, Laura Blackley & the Wildflowers and Town Mountain on Friday evening. On Saturday, watch out for Arson Dailey, Violet Bell, Leah Blevins, Brothers Egg, Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba, Carolina Dare, Laura Reed, Ellis Dyson & the Shambles, Devon Gilfillian, Lyric and Seratones. From funk to blues to country and bluegrass, the acts span the spectrum of musical genres, and some break down those barriers. No outside alcohol will be allowed, however, beer and wine will be available on site along with food options. A children’s area will set up during the day on Saturday. For a full schedule, visit beaufortmusicfestival.com. On Saturday, May 19, music lovers with have a second option for great free music. The Atlantic Beach Beach Music Festival brings classic shagging music to the shoreline. From 11am to 6pm, the beach will fill with beach music enthusiasts to watch Jim Quick & Coastline, Fantastic Shakers, Band of Oz and the Mighty Saints of Soul perform. Parking is available at the Causeway Shopping Center, Doubletree by Hilton and Carteret Community College with a free shuttle running every 30 minutes. Coolers are welcome, however, guests are advised to leave glass containers at home along with their pets. Food and beer vendors will also be available on-site. 16 www.nccoast.com

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore.

BITES & BLUES The NC Seafood Festival offers its popular Bites & Blues event on Saturday, April 14. Restaurants long the Morehead City waterfront offer samples of some of the house specialties while musicians perform around town. Tickets for the annual event are $40 and can be purchased at ncseafoodfestival.org.

CELEBRATING MOTOWN The Drifters, The Jackson 5, Earth, Wind & Fire – old Motown will be celebrated on Friday, April 27 at the Carteret Community Theatre, Morehead City, with live performances including a six-piece horn section. Tickets for “The Legacy of Motown” run from $22.50-$37.50 and are on sale now at carteretcommunitytheatre.com.

CAMPING UNDER THE STARS Tryon Palace in New Bern holds its Lanterns on the Lawn Family Campout April 7-8. For $50, families receive a 15-foot square plot to set up camp, a dinner buffet and breakfast. Evening events include a singalong and s’mores by the fire. Visit www.tryonpalace.org. 18

www.nccoast.com

REELIN’ THEM IN April 27-28 anglers in Morehead City will be reeling in the big ones for a very big cause. The annual Reelin’ for Research tournament raises money for UNC Children’s Hospital and childhood cancer research. About 60 boats participate on average, with weigh ins along the Morehead City waterfront. To date, the tournament has raised a whopping $2.4 million. Learn more at reelinforresearch.org.

Start Your Engines

Get ready to start your engines! The Carteret County Speedway, located at 501 Whitehouse Fork Road in Swansboro, is gearing up for a full season beginning Saturday, April 14. Opened in 2015, the speedway, was a lifelong dream of Bobby Watson, who painstakingly constructed more than a track, but rather a living museum to racing. For nearly 20 years, the track served as a World Karting Association sanctioned go-kart facility before pulling the plug in 1999. Watson soon began focusing on a world-class short track that could also serve as a venue for large-scale events. It took about 14 years to bring it all to fruition. Today, the track seats about 4,000 guests with VIP suites and concession stands along the ends of the track. A restaurant and bar sits center-track although organizers have taken special efforts to make sure the site is family friendly, including a special family seating area where alcohol and smoking are prohibited. An array of racing can be seen on any given Saturday night, including camp karts, late models, legends, mini-stock, street stock and more. An array of special events and guests are promoted throughout the 16-race season, which runs through November. Tickets start at $15 for most events, kids 10 and under are free. Season passes are also on sale. To learn more, visit carteretspeedway.com. 22 www.nccoast.com

Taking Flight

Alright, folks, it’s that time again. Grab your earplugs and start making plans to spend a day on the tarmac at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station. The biennial air show and open house runs Friday through Sunday, May 4-6, with the aim of breaking the last event’s record of more than 200,000 visitors in 2016. How do you break a record? According to organizers at Cherry Point, you simply add more world-class performances to an already stellar line up. With free parking and admission, we venture to guess they’ll have no trouble drawing another huge crowd. The show starts out with a bang Friday night, with the always-popular night show – a must see for those who haven’t experienced it before. While the Blue Angels do not perform due to safety concerns, the show includes spectacular aerial pyrotechnic displays, roaring afterburners, skydiver demonstrations and a large fireworks display set to patriotic music as well as live music. Gates open at 5pm and cars begin lining up along Highway 101 well in advance. We recommend an early arrival for good parking. On Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 8am and full days of activities are on tap. for a full schedule of activities. Static displays, ride simulators and a fun zone for kids combine with vendors, live entertainment and plenty of options for food, to create a perfect family day. It’s the acrobatics in the sky, however, that steal the spotlight. This year’s air show features the always-popular US Navy Blue Angels. Other highlights in a long lineup of performances include the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Bill Leff, Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, the Shockwave Jet Truck, US Army Black Daggers, Rob Holland and the tightly choreographed aerobatics of local favorite Hubie Tolson. While all events are free, including parking, there are a limited number of special premium seats and packages available, from $10-$15 for a bleacher seat to $80-$90 for a full Flightline Club Chalet package, which includes breakfast and lunch, beverages, preferred parking and access to the air conditioned chalet tent and semi-private restrooms. For pricing and availability, visit www.cherrypointairshow.com. Organizers recommend that guests bring along comfort items to help make their visit, well, more comfortable. Lawn chairs, blankets, sun screen, umbrellas, hats, jackets, cameras and, of course, those earplugs are suggested. ATM’s are available on-site, but organizers note that the lines are often quite long. Shuttle buses will operate throughout the festivities to help people get from parking areas to the tarmac. Keep in mind that pets, glass, coolers, alcohol, pocket knives, weapons and any wheeled vehicle other than strollers and wheelchairs are prohibited. It’s also important to be mindful of the fact that guests are entering a government facility and are subject to searches at any time. 24

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. EXPLORE BY WATER: Learn about local history and the importance of salt marshes while enjoying a relaxing paddle with the NC Maritime Museum from 9am to noon on Thursday, May 17. Instruction and safety lessons are provided, although participants must know how to swim and some basic kayak experience is recommended. Advance reservations required. Cost is $30 per person, $20 with own kayak. Register by calling 252-504-7740.

DOWN EAST EARTH DAY: Join the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Thursday, April 19 from 9am-2pm for an Earth Day celebration. Take an exploratory walk along the Willow Pond Trail, help sort items for recycling, learn all about honey bees and more. Free. www.coresound.com.

CCAC SPRING SALE: The Carteret County Arts & Crafts Coalition welcomes spring with its first of three weekend sales at the Beaufort Historic Site May 2627. From painting and photography to wood and glass, the organization brings together talent from around the region for its seasonal shows.

ALL ABOUT WHALES & WHALING: The NC Maritime Museum on Front Street brings together its second annual Whale & Whaling Symposium on Friday, April 6. Lectures throughout the day delve into the historic significance of whales along our shores. Free to attend. Call 252-504-7740 for information.

DinWhat started as a small annual festival has grown to offer culinary events throughout the year. The official Wine & Food Weekend, however, continues to be the organization’s show stopper. Now offering a near-week of food centric events, the 2018 festival runs April 25-29 combining the public’s appreciation for wine and food with its drive to support worthy local organizations. In 2017, the organization presented more than $50,000 in grants and recently pledged $100,000 toward the new, state-ofthe-art culinary and hospitality building on the Carteret Community College campus. “We are so thrilled to be supporting Carteret Community College on this amazing undertaking. The new facility will serve more than triple the number of students in the culinary arts and adding a hospitality program,” explained Lindsay Parker, BWF executive director. “We look forward to partnering with the school and hope to see its graduating students one day hosting Beaufort Wine and Food events in their own kitchens.” During this year’s festival, guests will find plenty of opportunities to help the organization achieve its goal while breaking bread with local and guest chefs and rubbing elbows with visiting wine makers, sommeliers and distributors. Always a highlight, guests will find a variety of full course wine dinners. A special dinner with Dank Burrito is planned for Wednesday, April 25, along with two dinners at private homes meticulously paired with the perfect wine. On Thursday, April 26, additional wine dinners are held throughout the county. Participating restaurants include Aqua, Beaufort Grocery Co., The Boathouse at Front Street Village, Caribsea, Floyd’s 1921 and Soundside. On Friday, April 27, the popular Fashion Show Luncheon returns to the Watercraft Center on Front Street, but it’s the gala Grand Reserve Tasting & Auction that everyone will be raving about. All funds raised through the auction and the $150 per person ticket price goes directly toward the culinary program pledge. Events culminate on Saturday, April 28, with the Vin de Mer Epicurean Village. Held on the picturesque grounds of Front Street Village, the tented event brings together hundreds of wine labels and dozens of local and regional restaurants in

what the organization describes as a little bit of “controlled chaos.” It is the see and be seen event of the festival, bringing together the best that the Wine & Food Weekend has to offer for a 3-hour whirlwind taste test. Tip – be sure to keep your phone close at hand so you can note your favorite wines along the way. Of course the selfies will be fun, too. Additional events include a Saturday evening Wine Walkabout, a wine & bread pairing, the Saturday Night Roundup featuring the music of Holy Ghost Tent Revival and a Sunday brunch. Visiting chefs include Amy Tornquist of Watt’s Grocery in Durham; Clark Barlowe of Heirloom Restaurant in Charlotte; John May of Piedmont Restaurant in Durham; Baptist Knaven of Provence of Carrboro; Joe Kindred of Kindred Restaurant and Hello Sailor in Davidson; and others. Vineyards represented include Sabastiani Vineyard & Winery, Precept Wines, Davis Family Vineyards, Mouton Noir Wines, Rombauer Vineyards, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and more. Wooden Boat Show Sets Sail

Whether you’re a boating enthusiast or prefer to keep your feet on dry land, the 44th annual Wooden Boat Show has activities for you. The show, organized by the NC Maritime Museum, takes over Front Street in downtown Beaufort from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, May 5 and is the longest ongoing wooden boat show in the Southeast. This free event celebrates the art of wooden boat building, the sport of boat racing and the culture and history that surrounds these works of arts. Dozens of handcrafted wooden boats, full size and model, will be on display, polished and shined, for all to see. Paul Fontenoy, museum curator and Wooden Boat Show coordinator, said the show has something to offer everyone, even if you’re not a wooden boat enthusiast. “We pay a lot of attention to making sure the show is not just interesting for wooden boat enthusiasts,” Fontenoy explained. “We have activities for children and opportunities for families to do things together, such as taking a boat ride.” Highlights of the show include: Wooden Boat Kids – Starting at 10am, children will be invited to sand, design and assemble their own wooden boats. Free Sailboat Rides –On Thursday and Friday, May 3-4 boat rides will be offered from 1-4pm and on Saturday, May 5, free boat rides in a traditional wooden boat will be offered from 1-3pm. Dona34

From Sinbad’s pirate ship the Meka II to a traditional Core Sounder fishing boat. Boating Skills Virtual Trainer – Fort Macon Sail & Power Squadron will have its virtual trainer on hand for demonstrations from 9am-5pm on Friday, May 5 and 1-5pm on Sunday, May 7. Nautical Rope Tying – Don Van Hoy keeps alive a tradition of working with ropes and knots for practical purposes. The kick-off reception for the annual Wooden Boat Show will be held at the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center on Friday, May 4. The event includes food and live music from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at the museum store. Fishing the Coast The warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide the Crystal Coast with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. The area is home to one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world for blue marlin; other fish caught along the Crystal Coast include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo depending on seasons. Many species, including drum and flounder, are caught surf fishing. Saltwater and freshwater anglers age 16 and older must have a valid, state-issued recreational fishing license to take fish in North Carolina throughout the year. Specific regulations and restrictions apply including size and daily limits. North Carolina offers a variety of fishing licenses from temporary to lifetime. Licenses for recreational fishing can be purchased online at www.ncwildlife.org, by visiting the Div. of Marine Fisheries in Morehead City or through area fishing supply stores.

There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Is-

land, this clearinghouse of Down East heritage is a must stop for anyone curious about this culturally-rich rural region. Once dependent on the water that surrounds it, Down East families entwined with boat building, decoy carving, hunting and fishing – a story that is told through community exhibits, artifacts and special programs. Details: 252728-1500, www.coresound.com.

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY

Morehead City’s only museum focuses on the rich, abundant history of this waterfront area. Visit an early school room, peek in to Carteret County’s fishing industry and touch the wheels of spy Emeline Pigott’s carriage. The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library, lauded for its genealogy materials, is available for public research. Details: 252-247-7533, www.thehistoryplace. org.

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. One of the highlights, the 306,000-gallon Living Shipwreck, features sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish gliding around a three-quarter-scale replica of a German U-boat found off the coast. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

One of three maritime museums in the state system, the flagship in Beaufort tells the tale of Eastern North Carolina’s long-standing relationship with the ocean. Museum staff members have been involved with the preservation of artifacts excavated from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s vessel that was lost just outside Beaufort inlet. For more info, visit www. ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST

Ready for a hike? Get back to nature with the Croatan National Forest, with its collection of hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds and day-use areas. The Croatan is home to a large number of carnivorous plants native to the area, including the Venus flytrap. Headquarters is located at 141 East Fisher Ave., just outside of New Bern. Visit www.fs.usda. gov.

NEW BERN FIREMEN’S MUSEUM

FORT MACON STATE PARK

TRYON PALACE This regal centerpiece to New Bern’s historic districts is a reproduction of the mansion constructed in 1770 for Colonial Governor William Tryon, who, after spending just a year in the home, fled North Carolina to become governor of New York. The original home was destroyed by fire in 1798. Site includes the NC History Center, a state-of-the-art museum, theater and meeting space. Learn more at www.tryonpalace.org.

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. The well-preserved pentagonal brick fortress garrisoned for the Spanish-American War is always a favorite. Visit www.ncparks.gov. 44

Trace the steps of the first chartered fire brigade, the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and its competitors, the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. Established in 1955, the museum is currently raising funds to restore the Central Fire Station on Broad Street to its 1928 appearance, with hopes of relocating into the space.
