Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come to the

National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

AT THE AQUARIUM Whoooo’s Who? Wise up about owls with programs, crafts, activities and close-up encounters during a day dedicated to owls. Aug. 4 the aquarium joins other organizations and facilities worldwide in celebrating International Owl Awareness Day. Owl-oriented activities spread knowledge and debunk myths about these often-mysterious winged wonders. The day also reveals the troubles some species face and how everyone can help. Highlights include opportunities to meet some owls that live at the aquarium including Bolt, an Eastern screech, a great-horned owl named Abira and barn owl Alba. See how owls fly during the Bird’s-Eye View daily bird show, and get an up-close encounter with owls

during Creature Connections. All three owls have injuries or conditions that give them little chance of surviving on their own in the wild. The aquarium cares for a number of animals with compelling rescue stories that can’t survive in the wild – including two Eastern screech owls from Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary. The two birds, with injuries that make it impossible for them to be released back into the wild, are cared for at the aquarium and offer an up-close, educational experience for visitors. Also among the feathered fun: • Check the schedule for when and where to watch the dissection of an owl pellet, a compacted, regurgitated mass of indigestible parts of prey such as bones, teeth, claws, skulls, feathers and fur. An examination of pellets provides insight into the diet and lifestyle of the bird. • Look for owl crafts and other activities in Discovery Classroom, plus bio-facts such as owl wings and other touchable items. • Throughout the day, enjoy colorful posters around the aquarium featuring the “whoooo,” what, when and where of owl populations around the world. Owl Awareness Day activities are free with admission or membership. Admission to the daily Bird’s-Eye View bird program also is free with admission or membership.

Shagging

Dig out those shagging shoes! Emerald Isle is buzzing with excitement this summer as word spreads about the Emerald Isle’s Beach Music Festival’s return. Planned for Saturday, Sept. 29, the town has a day full of music on tap, including the Tams, The Embers, Fantastic Shakers, Chairmen of the Board, The Band of Oz and more. The event runs from 11am to about 7pm at the Western Ocean Regional Access. “The town is pleased to present the third annual ‘reboot’ of the Emerald Isle Beach Music Festival this year on Sept. 29,” said Town Manager Frank Rush. “The past two years’ events have exceeded our expectations, with a great crowd, great performers and great weather each time. We’re looking forward to another great event this year!” The music festival was incredibly successful in the 1980s and 1990s and helped to put Emerald Isle on the map. Started in 1979 by former mayor Ronnie Watson, the festival was often dubbed the largest beach music festival in the country. Accord-

Shore

ing to news accounts, attendance could reach up to 15,000 people each year, especially if the weather was ideal. The music came to a halt in 1999. The notion of bringing the festival back for an encore came from public feedback, said Rush. During an economic development survey it was suggested that the town pursue a major fall event and that it host more events on the beach strand. Those sentiments were echoed during the 2015 town elections. Not only do additional events raise awareness about the town, having them in spring and fall help expand on the traditional summer season and offer great benefits for local businesses. The response, Rush said, from the town’s board of commissioners, business community, residents and visitors has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone is invited to attend. Parking will be available along Highway 58. As always, the Emerald Isle Beach Music Festival is free to attend.

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore. GYPSY!: The Carteret Community Theatre brings Tony-award winner “Gypsy” to the local stage Sept. 14-16 and 21-23. The show is loosely based on the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous striptease artist, and her mother, who aggressively pushed for her daughter’s success. Tickets are $24. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees begin at 2pm. For more information, visit www.carteretcommunitytheatre.com.

REVERSE DRAWING: The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce 2018 Reverse Drawing will be held at 6pm on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, Morehead City. The event is open to the public and each $100 ticket admits two adults to the party and the drawing for a grand prize of $10,000. The theme for this year’s event is New Orleans Masquerade and costumes are encouraged. Enjoy an open bar, silent auction and live music with a free cab ride home. Learn more at 252-726-6350.

LOCAL BREWS IN NEW BERN: Tryon Palace and the Tryon Palace Foundation celebrate Eastern North Carolina’s best brews at Live and Local: Tryon Palace Beer Festival from 5-9pm on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the NC History Center in New Bern. The event features local breweries, locally-owned food trucks and live music by local artists. Feeling crafty? Learn about the brewing process by seeing a live brew demonstration by a local beer master. To learn more, or to order tickets, visit tryonpalace.org. 18

Pirates Invade Beaufort On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10 & 11 visitors will be whisked back to the golden age of piracy along the streets of historic Beaufort. The Beaufort Pirate Invasion remembers those days of drama and excitement through sword fights, weapon demonstrations, costume contests, live music, dancing – and perhaps a little grog. But Beaufort’s experience with pirates hasn’t always been so jolly. According to legend, in 1747, Spanish Privateers came ashore to take the town. The villagers looked on helplessly as the privateers sailed into the harbor with mischief and mayhem on their minds. Unable to defend themselves against the greedy pirates who pillaged and plundered, Beaufort was soon in the hands of the rogue pirates. This did not set well with Major Enoch Ward and his militia of 58 men. They attempted to stop the ransacking and looting to no avail. Major Ward, however, refused to relinquish his duties. He scoured the countryside, urging farmers to help him take up the fight. Within three days, he had brought together 100 farmers which he armed with whatever weapons they could find. Major Ward, alongside Col. Thomas Lorick, returned to Beaufort with his hodgepodge militia and dispelled the unwelcome 24

www.nccoast.com

visitors from the town. On Aug. 10-11, the story will again be told – from mock battles to the pirate encampment, which simulates what life may have been like for those who have chosen this nefarious path.

Special events include:

• Yo, Ho, Ho, and a Bottle O’ RUN – Aug. 11 on the Beaufort Waterfront. Pirates cheer you on as you run, walk or swagger down the scenic Beaufort waterfront. Prizes for the race winners as well as for the best pirate costumes. Strollers and fourlegged friends are welcome. Register online or on race day at 7am. • Parlay on the Waterfront – Aug. 10-11, 7pm, an open air celebration on the Beaufort Waterfront. A fun evening of magic, fire shows, pirate shenanigans, music and good cheer. While in town, be sure to pop in to the NC Maritime Museum to see the expanded Blackbeard the Pirate exhibit of artifacts unearthed during the excavation of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, located just outside of Beaufort Inlet. To learn more about the Beaufort Pirate Invasion, visit www.beaufortpirateinvasion.com.

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate.

HORSE WATCHING: With September comes cooler, drier weather and the perfect opportunity to get out and walk along the picturesque Beaufort waterfront. It’s also a great time to spot our four-legged neighbors on Carrot Island, who are often more visible during the great spring and fall weather.

BLACKBEARD RETURNS!: Blackbeard returned to the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort this summer with an expanded exhibit. The renovation expanded the current footprint of the exhibit an additional 850 square feet and comes with additional artifacts, an updated narrative in the exhibit regarding Blackbeard, Queen Anne’s Revenge and the world they existed in. The exhibit will be on display through December.

NEW WATERFRONT DINING: Watch for the opening of Moonrakers, Beaufort’s newest waterfront restaurant, complete with rooftop dining and bar lounge – a first for this eastern end of the county. The striking building will feature 14-foot open ceilings, a display kitchen, local artwork and a woodfired oven. Keep watch for the grand opening! 28

INVADING SPECIES: For the sixth year in a row the folks at Discover Diving, Beaufort, are spearheading (no pun intended) a lionfish tournament for divers. Planned for Aug. 2-5, the event is designed to help raise public awareness of this invasive species and to encourage the sale of locally caught seafood. To learn more about this spearfishing competition, call 252-728-2265 or email dive@discoverydiving.com.

ON THE HORIZON

LOCAL CATCH The aroma of seafood will permeate the Morehead City waterfront Oct. 5-7 as the NC Seafood Festival honors the Crystal Coast’s bountiful catch. Held during the mild climes of the first weekend of October, the Seafood Festival brings a full slate of special events, entertainment, rides, vendors, educational opportunities and enough fun to keep the whole family busy all weekend long. While it’s the music, the Ferris wheel and the chance to pick up wares from favorite arts and crafts vendors that keep visitors entertained, it’s that lure of the catch that brings them to the festival. The festival’s vast food offerings are joined by more than 150 vendors. Photography, painting, glass blowing and molding, wood carvings, wall hangings and pottery are just a few of the arts and crafts you can expect to find. Other booths will offer Seafood Fest gear, including T-shirts and the popular annual poster. While free music is available on multiple stages throughout the weekend, a headlining concert is held Saturday night on the main stage. Check nc30

seafoodfestival.org for the line up. Other special events include the annual Blessing of the Fleet, held at 10am on Sunday, Oct. 7. Fishermen who have lost their lives to make their living on the sea are honored each year with what many consider the most moving part of the annual festival. Be sure to check out the Southern Outer Banks Boat Show, held on the waterfront each day, as well as the Twin Bridges Road Race, that gets things started on Saturday morning, beginning at 8am at the Beaufort drawbridge. Fireworks are slated for 9pm on Saturday and the family-friendly Pier Fishing Tournament runs all weekend to give anglers some bragging rights at the Bogue Inlet and Oceanana fishing piers on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, a sailing regatta is held Sunday at noon and Cooking with the Chefs demonstrations run throughout the festival. Looking for your perfect introduction to Crystal Coast seafood – look no further. For a full schedule of events, visit ncseafoodfestival.org.

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Is-

land, this clearinghouse of Down East heritage is a must stop for anyone curious about this culturally-rich rural region. Once dependent on the water that surrounds it, Down East families entwined with boat building, decoy carving, hunting and fishing – a story that is told through community exhibits, artifacts and special programs. Details: 252728-1500, www.coresound.com.

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY

Morehead City’s only museum focuses on the rich, abundant history of this waterfront area. Visit an early school room, peek in to Carteret County’s fishing industry and touch the wheels of spy Emeline Pigott’s carriage. The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library, lauded for its genealogy materials, is available for public research. Details: 252-247-7533, www.thehistoryplace. org.

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. One of the highlights, the 306,000-gallon Living Shipwreck, features sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish gliding around a three-quarter-scale replica of a German U-boat found off the coast. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

One of three maritime museums in the state system, the flagship in Beaufort tells the tale of Eastern North Carolina’s long-standing relationship with the ocean. Museum staff members have been involved with the preservation of artifacts excavated from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s vessel that was lost just outside Beaufort inlet. For more info, visit www. ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST

Ready for a hike? Get back to nature with the Croatan National Forest, with its collection of hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds and day-use areas. The Croatan is home to a large number of carnivorous plants native to the area, including the Venus flytrap. Headquarters is located at 141 East Fisher Ave., just outside of New Bern. Visit www.fs.usda. gov.

NEW BERN FIREMEN’S MUSEUM

FORT MACON STATE PARK

TRYON PALACE This regal centerpiece to New Bern’s historic districts is a reproduction of the mansion constructed in 1770 for Colonial Governor William Tryon, who, after spending just a year in the home, fled North Carolina to become governor of New York. The original home was destroyed by fire in 1798. Site includes the NC History Center, a state-of-the-art museum, theater and meeting space. Learn more at www.tryonpalace.org.

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. The well-preserved pentagonal brick fortress garrisoned for the Spanish-American War is always a favorite. Visit www.ncparks.gov.

Trace the steps of the first chartered fire brigade, the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and its competitors, the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. Established in 1955, the museum is currently raising funds to restore the Central Fire Station on Broad Street to its 1928 appearance, with hopes of relocating into the space. There’s no dining room, just a small easy-to-miss brick building. At the window, you place your order (trust us, make it a shrimpburger). The server writes the order on a paper sack, which soon will be handed out with your meal inside: fried shrimp, tartar sauce, coleslaw, and ketchup, all piled on a steamed bun. Messy and totally yummy.” - Coastal Living Magazine

Beach Days While there are more than 100 access points tucked into neighborhoods along Bogue Banks, the 25-mile barrier island that runs from Fort Macon to Emerald Isle, they are generally designed for the residents who live in the area and offer limited to no parking for visitors. There are, however, a large number of public beach access points with generous parking for visitors to the area. Several of the larger sites do charge for parking during the season (generally April-September). We have noted where a charge may be incurred. The list below follows the beach from the east to west.

FORT MACON STATE PARK

At the end of Hwy 58, guests will find 277 free parking spaces near the fort with several beach access points on the other. Closer to Atlantic Beach, the Bath House area features 317 free parking spots, bathrooms, concessions and a boardwalk.

Fishing the Coast The warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide the Crystal Coast with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. The area is home to one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world for blue marlin; other fish caught along the Crystal Coast include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo depending on seasons. Many species, including drum and flounder, are caught surf fishing. Saltwater and freshwater anglers age 16 and older must have a valid, state-issued recreational fishing license to take fish in North Carolina throughout the year. Specific regulations and restrictions apply including size and daily limits. North Carolina offers a variety of fishing licenses from temporary to lifetime. Licenses for recreational fishing can be purchased online at www.ncwildlife.org, by visiting the Div. of Marine Fisheries in Morehead City or through area fishing supply stores.

Beaufort’s B Prepare to raise a glass Sept. 28-29 to mark Beaufort Wine and Food’s third annual craft beer festival, Beaufort’s Brewin. The two-day festival will feature a variety of events held in Beaufort and will range in size from beer dinners, luncheons and seminars to the 500-person Beer, Bubbles and BBQ tasting event at Front Street Village. “Beaufort Wine and Food is excited to once again tap in to this passionate industry and following and offer our third annual craft beer festival late September,” explained Lindsay Parker, executive director for BWF. “With over 175 breweries and brew pubs across the state, North Carolina boasts the largest number of brewers in the American South. Beaufort Wine and Food is thrilled to have the opportunity to spotlight the Crystal Coast as a beer destination for our state.” Partnering with regional distributors and over two dozen breweries from across the state and beyond, BWF has crafted a stellar line up of events. A beer seminar will kick things off on Friday, 52

www.nccoast.com

Sept. 28 at the Backstreet Pub featuring a number of breweries. The format will allow guests to meet a brew masters and brewery owners and sample their product directly. The event will begin at 3:30pm and tickets are $20. Later that evening, the popular Pub Crawl returns. Participating restaurants and venues in downtown Beaufort will offer guests a chance to meet brewers and sample beer and cuisine pairings. The event runs from 6-8pm and features 10 stops. Beer dinners are also slated for Friday evening, beginning at 7pm at two area restaurants. The dinners feature the local host chef and guest brewer to walk guests through the multi-course menu. Tickets to the beer dinners are $50. On Saturday, beer luncheons will kick off the day starting at noon at two area restaurants. Much like Friday’s dinners, brewers and host chefs will discuss the menu and paired beer with guests. Tickets are $40. But it’s the headline event that everyone will be waiting for – Beer, Bubbles and BBQ. Held at Front

Brewin’ Street Village (2400 Lennoxville Road, Beaufort) from 3-7pm, the afternoon soiree features more than 25 craft breweries and brew pubs, with a sampling from across the state and beyond. In addition to tasting dozens of beers, guests will be treated to BBQ and sides, as a number of regional pit masters put their best dish in head to head competition. The winner will be announced during the event and will receive $500 to donate to charity. Tickets are $65 and will be available at the door the day of the event. Guests can also vote on the People’s Choice beer – a titled that was tied between Carteret County’s own Mill Whistle Brewing and Georgia based Red Hare Brewing Co. in 2017. “These events are unique in that they allow festival goers a chance to interact with the brewers and brewery owners who live and breathe beer,” said Parker. “These are the folks whose passion, patience and creativity have produced the amazing beer selections we see both locally and on retail shelves nationwide. They are the ones to credit for making

North Carolina’s beer scene what it is today.” Proceeds from ticket sales go toward BWF’s mission to support local charities and nonprofits that strive to improve life in Carteret County. Since its first festival in 2004, BWF has donated almost $700,000 to area nonprofits. Proceeds from this year’s Beaufort’s Brewin’ festival go towards BWF’s next major community project: a donation of $100,000 to the construction of the new, state of the art culinary building on the campus of Carteret Community College. This new facility will more than triple the number of students served in the culinary, baking and pastry and hospitality programs. “Our efforts to give back to organizations that support our community are at the forefront of what we do … it’s why we hold events throughout the year and it’s something our members, volunteers and sponsors and guests can be proud of,” said Parker.
