Rachel Carson Reserve Visitors looking to get back to nature during their visit to the Crystal Coast will find a natural wonder in the Rachel Carson Reserve. Teeming with wildlife and natural vegetation, this series of island located across from the Beaufort waterfront is a component of the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve. Often referred to as Bird Shoals or Carrot Island by locals, it can only be accessed by boat. Lucky explorers might spot a few of the beautiful Carrot Island wild ponies congregating along the shore, an egret swooping down into the marsh or a sand fiddler crab scurrying across the mud. The 2,650-acre reserve is a favorite place for hiking, shelling and exploring the natural and human processes that affect coastal areas. The site was named for Rachel Carson, the scientist and author who conducted research on

the island’s coastal habitat. Comprised of salt marshes, salt flats, tidal flats and eelgrass beds, the reserve is a favorite place for beachcombing, swimming and sunbathing. More than 200 species of birds have been sighted on the reserve and a checklist of these feathered-friends is available. Guided nature tours are offered from 8:30-10:30am, Tuesday and Thursday, June through August, including nature hikes and cruises offered by the Friends of the Reserve. Closed toe shoes, sunglasses, hats, water and sunscreen are recommended. Guests should be prepared to get their shoes wet and muddy, especially during the nature hikes. Tours are free, however, donations are graciously accepted. For more information, call 252-838-0883 or visit www.nccoastalreserve.net.

NC Aquarium Make merry with marine life over the holidays. The aquarium and gift shop are open 9-am-5pm throughout the holiday season and the winter, except being closed all day Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Free programs such as diving demonstrations, feeding programs and live animal presentations continue all year. The aquarium also closes at 2pm on Friday, Dec. 14 to prepare for a special guest – Santa! The jolly elf stops by to hear little ones whisper their wishes among the fishes. This special evening event, Santa by the Sea, includes a 5x7 inch photo with St. Nick for each child 12 and under, plus keepsake crafts, favorite yuletide stories, magic shows by Frost Magic Productions and other holiday wonderment. Advance tickets are recommended and are available online As Dec. 25 approaches, keep a lookout in the Living Shipwreck for divers outfitted as Santa and his elves. Another holiday highlight: winter camps for kids in grades 2-5 on Dec. 26-28, featuring indoor and outdoor activities during the school break As the weather outside turns frightful, sign up for Succulent Seafood. This program takes participants to the area’s top restaurants for seafood cooking recipes, tips and taste tests. Succulent

Seafood, usually on Mondays, requires advance registration. Here are two more winter bright spots: Admission is free for all on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Jan. 21. The aquarium also is collecting non-perishable goods in a post-holiday food drive to restock Martha’s Mission food pantry. The Valentine’s event, Seduction in the Seas on Feb. 9, sweetens the weekend with fun activities about animal attraction – watch the website for more details. For anglers warming up their reels for spring – or folks looking for a holiday gift – registration is open for annual “Get Hooked” fishing school. The day-long seminar on March 9 features triedand-true techniques from expert anglers on a wide variety of topics. The aquarium is 5 miles west of Atlantic Beach at 1 Roosevelt Blvd, Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512. Regular hours are 9am to 5pm daily, except closing at 2pm Dec. 14, 2012, Christmas and New Year’s days. Admission is $8 for ages 13-61, $7 for age 62 and over and $6 for ages 3-12. Children 2 and under and NC Aquarium Society members are admitted free. Visit the Pine Knoll Shores section of www.ncaquariums.com or call 252-247-4003 for more information.

PINE KNOLL SHORES A sanctuary for turtles, birds and trees, the residential community of Pine Knoll Shores is the midway point between Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach and features one of the most natural untouched areas of Bogue Banks despite its population of just over 1,500 residents. Visitors will notice an historical marker along Hwy 58 noting the site of one of the first landings in the New World by Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, putting the area on the map – literally – long before Pine Knoll Shores was born. Alice G. Hoffman purchased most of the land on Bogue Banks extending from Atlantic Beach to the Emerald Isle town line in hopes of creating a private retreat. Local historians have documented

that in 1935 Hoffman’s land passed to a trustee, Llewellyn Phillips. In 1939 it went to John Marshall Mathias, who served as trustee for four children of the late President Theodore Roosevelt, a relative of Hoffman’s. The children allowed development of the property with a focus on minimal disturbance to the land around them, making Pine Knoll Shores one of the state’s most environmentally-sensitive towns. Pine Knoll Shores is home to one of the state’s three aquariums, which is open year-round. A variety of programs, both on-site and onlocation, make this a hub of activity for visiting families and local residents. To learn more about town, visit www.townofpks.com.

Fort macon state park If there was a center for the Crystal Coast’s Civil War history it would be deep within the walls of Fort Macon State Park, North Carolina’s second most visited state park. The five-sided brick fortress stands as proudly today as she did in the 1800s, complete with battle scars to show for her years of protection. Garrisoned in 1834, Fort Macon was seized from Union forces by the Confederate army at the start of the Civil War. But in April of 1862, Union forces recaptured the oceanside fortress, giving the North control of the entire NC coast. A reenactment of the bombardment is celebrated annually, and 2012, the 150th anniversary of the event, is sure to bring an array of special events to the park.

A new visitors center and education space helps serve the approximate 1.3 million visitors to the site, sharing the story of Fort Macon and providing a backdrop for workshops and conferences. In addition, audio programs, displays and a variety of artifacts throughout the protected site help illustrate what life was like at the fort during its years of service. The fort is the focal point of Fort Macon State Park, which encompasses 385 acres of pristine beach, dunes and maritime forest just east of Atlantic Beach. At the park’s beach access, visitors can fish from rock jetties or park at the bathhouse area for swimming and summer concessions. The park opens at 8am and closes at sunset. Fort hours are 9am-5:30pm daily. Details: 252-726-3775.

ATLANTIC BEACH With a soothing blend of convenience, attractions and solitude, Atlantic Beach is the oldest of the five towns along Bogue Banks. It was here, where decades ago a ferry would bring vacationers for a day to frolic in the waves and lay in the warmth of the sun. The town continues to be not only a vibrant vacation spot, but a favorite for Carteret County residents ready for their day in the sun. While the amusement Circle everyone came to love through the 90s is no longer in business, the town’s center is used for outdoor movies, concerts and an array of special events during the summer months. It’s the town’s laid-back spirit, however, that keeps people coming back for more.

14

www.nccoast.com

With ample opportunities for surfing and fishing, Atlantic Beach is home to one of the three remaining fishing piers on the island. The Oceanana Fishing Pier and the accompanying hotel are a traditional stop for many families looking to avoid the crowds during summer vacation. Atlantic Beach is close to shopping and dining options and convenient to area attractions. One of the most popular, Fort Macon State Park, is located at the northern tip of the island. Other favorite events include the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament, the Penguin Plunge and Carolina Kite Fest. Details: www.atlanticbeach-nc.com.

Taking the Plunge It’s that time of year again – a new year, a time for resolutions and change and a time to set new goals for a fresh start to the New Year – a chillingly fresh start for those participating in this year’s annual Penguin Plunge in Atlantic Beach. The Penguin Plunge is a nonprofit corporation that seeks to raise funds for local Carteret County charities through this annual New Year’s Day event, making it a fun, friendly event while also benefitting local charities around the county. On Tuesday, Jan. 1, those participating in the Plunge, and others who would rather stay out of the water and take photos while staying dry and warm, meet at the Atlantic Beach Circle. The Plunge begins at 1pm and the minimum donation is $10 to participate. The 2012 Penguin Plunge marked the ninth year friends gathered to dip into the ocean on New

Year’s Day, and a record-breaking 701 people chilled themselves in the ocean, raising more than $9,000 for the Crystal Coast Hospice House while an estimated 1,500 spectators cheered them on. The sponsors expect the turnout to be even larger this year, both in participation and donations. Come join the community for lots of fun, excitement, kite flying and fundraising. For more information or to download a registration form, please visit www.penguinplunge.org.

THE HISTORY PLACE Lauded time and time again for its vast genealogy library, The History Place in Morehead City is a great place to get an overall history of the region. For genealogy and Civil War buffs, the Jack Spencer Goodwin Library houses more than 6,000 publications and an extensive county photo file. The Civil War collections are especially notable – drawing a large research audience annually to the site. The museum itself is nothing short of a success story. Originally housed on the campus of Carteret Community College, the Carteret County Historical Society members undertook a fundraising campaign that would bring them to a new home in downtown Morehead City more than 10 years ago. An old furniture store was renovated to house exhibits, the library, meeting space and a small café. Space rentals and the leased restaurant space continue to buoy the nonprofit operation.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Eleven years ago, the late John Green of Beaufort had a vision. He saw nonprofit groups organizing and working together hand in hand to create one large annual event, and sharing the fruits of their labors. As the old adage goes, there is strength in numbers after all, and the same can be said when it comes to charitable programs. By pooling their efforts, Green suggested, volunteers would be able to work less and earn more for their organization. The Carolina Chocolate Festival was born – breaking attendance records for the Crystal Coast Civic Center from its first show. Chocolate, it seems, is a great draw. And through the love of chocolate, Green’s legacy continues in Morehead City on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3. With vendors from as far away as Tennessee and Virginia, the festival brings everything chocolate together under one roof. Chocolate diamonds and pears, chocolate cakes and tortes, chocolate bars, truffles, fudge, chocolate popcorn, even chocolate cookbooks are mixed in with baking competitions, a cake walk and the always-popular chocolate pudding eating competitions, which occur on the hour. Tickets are $8 for

In addition, the festival will offer a total of $5,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors in Carteret County. It is the charitable organizations, however, that truly benefit from the event each year. In the last 10 years, the Chocolate Festival has donated more than $350,000 to its partnering nonprofits. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Carteret County Domestic Violence, Carteret County 4H, White Oak Church Youth Ministries, Beaufort Woman’s Club, Beaufort Sister Cities, Carteret General Hospital Volunteers and Second Blessings Community Outreach Ministry. “Thanks to the chocolate lovers who at-

Beaufort Visitors to Beaufort (pronounced “Bô-furt”) are quick to discover that history is alive in this small seaport town. Noted as North Carolina’s third oldest town, Beaufort retains much of its history from past centuries. Incorporated in 1722 as Fish Towne, it’s not hard to guess what the region was known for. Fishing and shipping have played a large role in shaping the community and it’s an industry that continues to have a presence. The region continues to be shaped by the ocean that surrounds it as well as the bounty it hides. The wreckage of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the flagship of one Blackbeard the Pirate, was found just outside of Beaufort Inlet about 10 years ago and continues to be a draw for the community. A large two-day Pirate Festival continues to reinforce Beaufort’s pirate history. With a picturesque waterfront, the town is

a favorite for those eager to shed their cars and put on their walking shoes. Whether it’s strolling down the wooden boardwalk or simply walking along the live oak-draped residential streets of the historic district to gander at the historical architecture, Beaufort is a town best seen on foot. Scenic strolls are highlighted by shopping opportunities, fine dining and fiery red sunsets. Tour and charter boats, plus a wealth of area artisans help make Beaufort a fun and eclectic spot to spend time. Noted events include the Wine and Food Weekend in April, the NC Maritime Museum’s Wooden Boat Show in May, the Beaufort Old Homes and Gardens Tour in June and the Carteret County Arts and Craft Coalition Show and Sales on Memorial Day, June 22-23 and Labor Day weekends. NC MARITIME MUSEUM The majority of the small towns and communities along the Crystal Coast were built upon the region’s close proximity to the ocean and the bounty it holds. The NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort pays homage to that rich heritage, making it the perfect place to see exactly how deep that connection is. Under the auspices of the NC Dept. of Cultural Resources, the museum illustrates the story through artifacts and displays, educational programs and special events. The site was thrust into the spotlight in 2011 when it became home to the first permanent exhibit of artifacts raised from the vessel believed to be the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s flagship. Located in 1996 just outside of Beaufort Inlet, the Dept. of Cultural Resources

and the museum have played a huge role in funding the excavation and bringing the artifacts to the surface. The new 1,200 sq. ft. exhibit takes up about a third of the museum’s total floor space and continues to be a huge draw for the site. Free to visit, the museum features a variety of additional exhibits, from sea life and sailing to boat building and commercial fishing. Across the street, the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center features an active boat and model shop, where visitors can observe the active construction of wooden boats or take a class to learn how to build their own. The museum is open from 9am-5pm, weekdays; 10am-5pm on Saturday; and 1-5pm on Sunday. For more information, call 252-728-7317 or visit ncmaritimemuseums.com.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE If there was a core to the historic town of Beaufort, the Beaufort Historic Site on Turners Street would be it. Cited for recognizing the town’s historical significance more than 50 years ago, the Beaufort Historical Association, which maintains the site, has been a leader in the restoration and preservation of some of the town’s most prestigious structures. The site itself includes 11 historic buildings and the Old Burying Ground on Ann Street. Buildings include the Courthouse of 1796, the oldest surviving wooden courthouse in the state; the apothecary shop, circa 1859; the Carteret County Jail, circa 1829; the Rustell House, circa 1732 and others. Enhanced by authentic artifacts, a double-decker tour bus and facts and stories that have been passed down through the ages, the Historic Site has documented the life-

styles and customs of Beaufort’s past to preserve its historical identity for the future. Throughout the year, the Beaufort Historic Site offers a variety of tours, seminars, volunteer opportunities and special events, including several of the town’s largest annual social engagements. From the educational Kindergarten Thanksgiving to the popular Old Homes & Gardens Tour held each June, there is always something on the horizon at the Beaufort Historic Site. In addition to its own events, the grounds host three shows and sales by the Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition annually and are available as a special event rental. The Beaufort Historic Site is open from 9:30am-5pm Monday through Saturday and 10am-4pm during the off-season. Details: 252728-5225 or www.beauforthistoricsite.org. Coaster

North Carolina is home to a variety of fish species that anglers can pursue throughout the year, including the winter months. Warm Gulf Stream currents provide the destination with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. Some game fish are abundant all year, while other species are more productive during the winter season. Fishing charters target specific species like bluefin tuna during the winter season. Puppy drum, stripers and speckled trout are also found in the Crystal Coast winter waters. Fishing offshore from Hatteras and Morehead City offers winter anglers some of the most productive fishing for bluefin tuna, which can reach up to 600 pounds. Angling for bluefin tuna is most abundant from December through April. Flounder fishing season is from April to December; this flat fish can be found in shallow waters and lured with flies, especially in the waters off the coastal village of Oriental. January usually brings lots of bait to the Cape Lookout Shoals area and with it come stripers and red drum schools along the Outer Banks. Speckled trout show up at the rock jetties and along the beaches, and are usually fished into the first week of February. Most, if not all, winter fishing in the Cape Lookout area needs to have good weather. Mild temperatures with light wind haven proven best. Saltwater and freshwater anglers age 16 and older must have a valid, state-issued recreational fishing license to take fish in North Carolina throughout the year, including December. Specific regulations and restrictions apply depending on local fishing waters including size limit, daily creel limit and closed seasons. North Carolina has a separate license for people using devices other than fishing rods, and they offer a variety of fishing licenses from temporary to lifetime. Temporary licenses are a good investment for nonresident sportsmen on vacation. Annual licenses are the most commonly issued and they can be for residents or nonresidents. Lifetime licenses are a great cost effective offering for avid anglers. Licenses for North Carolina recreational fishing can be purchased online via the NC Wildlife site www.ncwildlife.org, by visiting the Div. of Marine Fisheries in Morehead City or through many fishing stores and shops. It is extremely important to ensure everything is legal when trying your hand at fishing the chilly Atlantic. 26

Cape Lookout National Seashore

Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach, daily ranger programs and facilities in summer. There are no lifeguards on the beaches or maintained roads. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, also offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. For those seeking to discover the seashore’s history, picturesque Portsmouth village, found at the northeastern tip of Core Banks, is a 250-acre uninhabited island community dating from 1753 and preserved as a national historic site. Exhibits in several of the historic buildings tell the history of this island community. Many visitors come to the National Seashore to view the black and white diagonal checkerboard-patterned Cape Lookout Lighthouse. A landmark since 1859, the lighthouse

30

tower is maintained by the National Park Service. Visitors can climb the tower from mid-May to mid-September. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the South Core Banks ferry dock, has a shaded pavilion and boardwalk connecting it to the beach. There are exhibits along the boardwalk and at the nearby Keepers’ Quarters Museum. Exhibits focus on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The Light Station Visitor Center and the Keepers’ Quarters Museum are open to the public 9am-5pm, April through November. The seashore’s main visitor center, located on Harkers Island, is open year round from 9am-5pm (except for Dec. 25 & Jan. 1). Exhibits tell the story of island communities, the US Life-Saving Service and other local history. An indoor theater offers a short film and the visitor center bookstore features books, tapes, videos and children’s items related to Cape Lookout National Seashore. A nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. For a complete listing of area ferries, charters, tours and cruises, see page 69. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no fast food, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Visitors and campers, remember to take whatever is needed to eat or drink, sun and insect lotions, hats and shoes and to bring out all that you carry in, including trash.

Carteret Cajun

Celebrating Mardi Gras Down East Style The folks in Louisiana may be throwing one heck of a party, but that doesn’t been everyone will be sitting on their haunches here in Eastern North Carolina. In its 21st year, the Gloucester Mardi Gras has been giving the coast a chance to

34

celebrate the winter milestone with perfect flair. The tradition returns on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the community center, complete with beads, gumbo and live music. Brian and Barbara Blake had a plan – the pair wanted to create an event that would bring the community together and help chase away the cold of winter while raising money for area charities. The founding members of Cajun-inspired band Unknown Tongues found that as they gained popularity, they were frequently asked to

participate in various fundraisers. After a few years of fielding requests, they answered back with a fundraiser all their own, and anyone who has had the pleasure of hearing Unknown Tongues know, the Blake’s put a lot of energy into just about everything they do, including the Down East Mardi Gras. Instead of focusing the event on the large annual undertaking in New Orleans, the Down East version is modeled after the rural Louisiana Mardi Gras. In those parts, local citizens disguise themselves for the day in masks and bright costumes and are herded by handlers into horse-drawn cattle trailers and hauled from farm to farm to chase chickens that will eventually end up in the gumbo for the Mardi Gras celebration. In Gloucester, no chicken chasing is required. Instead, the idea is to get right down to the business of celebrating. Many participants bring their own chicken, mind you, along with musical instruments and their dancing shoes. Local shrimp and crab take the place of crawfish, the staple of the Louisiana’s rural shindig, and no one is expected to aid local farmers in catching their chickens. But there is certainly no shortage of fun. When folks start rolling in Saturday morning, food preparation is in full swing as giant cauldrons of gumbo simmer on the gas burners set up under tents. A Fool’s Procession announces the feast, with everyone adorned in colorful mismatched attire, raising a ruckus as they march down the road. Along with gumbo, guests can expect turkey, plenty of side dishes and a collection of desserts. The Gloucester Mardi Gras also includes a king and queen cake for the kids. A small baby doll is baked into each of the two cakes, and when the cake is cut and served, the boy who finds the doll in his piece is deemed the king and the girl the queen. The two go through a coronation ceremony and take

Tongues take the stage with their mix of country, Zydeco, Cajun and rhythm and blues tunes that always have the dance floor packed with partiers of all ages. As beads are tossed from the stage, children scurry between peoples’ legs in hopes of collecting as many as possible. The dance styles of participants are as varied and crosscultural as the music, with the twist and the boogaloo sharing the floor with the two-step and the Zydeco. Musicians from around the area are known to bring their instruments and join in, creating a jam session that lasts well into the evening. Blake said he sees the benefits the event has on the community, for both the fellowship it provides and the support it gives to charitable organizations. To attend the event, as always, is free, however donations, both of food and money, are always graciously accepted.

Warming the Winter Soul with Toby Walker

larry sribnick photo

The cold blast of winter may have fallen across the coast, but folks looking for a little fun and entertainment are still able to find a few events to draw them out of the house. The best events we’ve found are the variety of musical options this winter – sure to evoke a little toe-tapping, chasing away the cold and lifting the spirits. The Morehead Center for Performing Arts has two holiday concerts planned brining country music recording artists to Eastern North Carolina. The Bellamy Brothers, who have been entertaining audiences for more than 30 years, visit the area on Friday, Dec. 7, bringing a little “Tropical Christmas” to the area. The duo’s popular hit “Let Your Love Flow” was listed last year as No. 68 in BMI’s Top 100 Songs of the Century. The show is followed by Suzy Bogguss White Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 16, combining her own popular favorites with holiday classics just in time for the holidays. The small town girl from Illinois debuted on the country music charts in 1988 and hasn’t stopped moving since. Folk singer Judy Collins hits the stage at The Morehead Center on Saturday, March 2, bringing her unmistakable voice to the coast for one show only. Since her first album in 1961, Collins has had a vast following, working with many budding artists through the years and even trying her hand at Broadway tunes. 38

Celebrating a season of all-stars, the Down East Folk Arts Society’s concert series is in full swing and sure to raise the temperature in Clawson’s 1905 with its live performances. On Saturday, Jan. 12, Gathering Time, featuring Hillary Foxsong, Stuart Markus and Glen Roethel feature their three-part harmony with a blend of guitars, light percussion and song. Original songs were influenced by bands such as the Eagles and the Byrds, but they sprinkle plenty of themselves in the mix. Brooks Williams, who has earned acclaim from Rolling Stone magazine for his mastery of the guitar, is set to perform on Saturday, Feb. 9. With more than 17 years of recording and 25 years of touring behind him, Williams is sure to entertain. A favorite blues and country picker, Toby Walker returns to Carteret County on Saturday, March 9, for a second year in a row. A skilled singer/songwriter, Walker said he draws inspiration from both contemporary and traditional music, including R.L. Burnside and Etta Baker. Tee Time

Golf enthusiasts rave about how Eastern North Carolina suits them to a tee as soon as they discover the terrific and unique courses of the Crystal Coast. Most courses take full advantage of the area’s natural beauty and are built around maritime forests or near the water. When your eye’s not on the ball or focused on the hole, the Crystal Coast’s courses and their natural surroundings are sights to be seen. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. In fact, during the winter months, golfers are delighted not only by the good playing weather, but also by seasonal pricing specials and having the greens more to themselves for play at a truly relaxing pace. And during the prime time summer months, area courses ensure that the play remains at a leisurely pace, perfect for first-time golfers or those who have had the game of golf in their blood for years. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, well-equipped pro shops and are open to the public at

great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a Crystal Coast resident and golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations. Featured here are some of the best local courses when it comes to North Carolina’s “golf coast.” Bear Trail Golf Club, 444 Harris Creek Road, Jacksonville, is an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course professionally designed by Rusty Simmons of Simmons Golf Designs, Orlando, Fla., and Gene Daniel of Blackwater Golf, LLC professionally shaped and constructed the greens, the boxes and fairway features. The course is equipped with a pro shop, state-of-theart driving range and putting green. Bear Trail Golf Club is the ideal course for beginners and/or novice golfers. Accessed from Hwy 70 just west of Morehead City, Brandywine Bay Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 championship course designed among wooded areas, ponds and streams in the residential resort, Brandy(continued on page 46)

emerald isle With an almost perfect blend of modern amenities and old-fashioned beach town values, Emerald Isle has become a favorite vacation spot for families. Located at the far western end of Bogue Banks, the town’s warm hospitality and hometown charm make it a perfect beach getaway. And options abound, from campgrounds and hotels to condo and private home rentals, when it comes time to choose the perfect place to stay. Interestingly enough, this area of Bogue Banks remained largely uninhabited until the 1950s when it was purchased by a group of developers. While contemplating their investment, a consultant was

flown over the area for a visual survey. Viewing the lush green maritime forest set against the sparkling blue-greens of the Atlantic Ocean, he suggested “Emerald Isle.” Emerald Isle pays tribute to that Irish namesake each March with its St. Patrick’s Festival, one of the Crystal Coast’s biggest spring events. Vacation attractions include miniature golf, movies, fishing, bike paths that span the town, natural areas such as Emerald Woods park and, of course, swimming, sunning, sandcastle building and a nice assortment of shopping and dining. For more details, visit www.emeraldisle-nc.org.

swansboro & cape carteret In addition to being a picturesque waterfront community, Swansboro is home to the oldest running Carteret County festival. October’s Mullet Festival brings an estimated 20,000 visitors to this small coastal village that boasts a population of less than 2,000. And with its 58th year in 2012, the event shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. It may be because Swansboro is a perfect festival location. Perched along the beautiful White Oak River on Hwy 24, between Cape Carteret and Jacksonville, the village offers a unique hilly landscape that seems to cradle the historic buildings in its downtown district. Celebrating 75 Years by Amanda Dagnino

Morehead City’s iconic Sanitary Restaurant will celebrate its 75th birthday in February, with specials, a ribbon cutting ceremony and live music running from Feb. 8-10. Recognized as one of the first restaurants to grace the waterfront, the Sanitary has a history as rich as the town that welcomed it. Opened in 1938 by business partners, the late Capt. Jesse Lee “Tony” Seamon and Ted Garner, the site’s humble beginning was spawned by fishing charter customers who were interested in having a fish dinner without having to spend a day fishing themselves. The pair set up a small counter with 12 stools and the rest, as John Tunnell, long time employee would say, is history. Customers commented on the comfortable, relaxed setting, even as the restaurant added to its seating through the year. Seamon was well known for greeting customers at the door by name. “Food service is a hard industry to go into. And you don’t go into a venture like this thinking you’re going to please every customer, every day,” said Tunnell, who continues to work as a manager and resident historian. “But I think the food and the service spoke for itself. It still

speaks for itself. You are nice to your customers, you remember them and you welcome them by name when they return. Customer relations are very important. If you appreciate the customer and appreciate their business, then they’re going to return. It’s as simple as that. Without the customers, I wouldn’t have had a job.” The Garner and Seamon partnership lasted until Garner’s death in 1978. Ted Garner, Jr. purchased the restaurant in 1979 and while he still oversees the restaurant, the day-to-day operation is now in the hands of his son Jeff and daughter Lisa. “It was a natural transition,” offered Garner. “I had worked in the restaurant my whole life, started at 12 or so, bussing tables. And I always knew that this was what I would do as an adult.” He studied business administration at ECU and spent a season in Colorado, but for the most part, he said the restaurant business was in his blood. With a seating capacity of more than 600, it is not uncommon for the site to see more than 2,000 diners on a busy summer day. And at the ripe age of 75, it’s safe to say that will be the case for many summers to come.
