Don’t miss the coolest thing around this summer – penguins! Look for the Penguin Plunge exhibit, home to six of the charming black and white birds. These special guests are staying through September to spread the word about how everyone can help penguins worldwide, and wildlife closer to home. The stars are African penguins, a handsome species with distinctive markings and pink eye patches. Watch the penguins waddle and swim

any day, free with admission or membership, and enjoy other penguin programs and activities. Sharks are in the spotlight every week on Finny Fridays, starting June 8. Fun activities, programs, crafts and displays tell the truth about sharks and the essential part they play in the ecosystem. For an extra dose of Toothy Times, it’s all things shark every day during Shark Week, July 22-28. Turtles get their turn weekly also on Turtle Tuesdays, beginning June 12. The programs and activities focus on various species of freshwater turtles and marine turtles. Also look for the new, interactive Sea Turtle Rescue exhibit, and a new behind-the-scenes tour all about sea turtles. Check the aquarium’s website for more summer programs, events and field trips. Rachel Carson Reserve Visitors looking to get back to nature during their visit to the Crystal Coast, will find a natural wonder in the Rachel Carson Reserve. Teeming with wildlife and natural vegetation, this series of island located across from the Beaufort waterfront is a component of the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve. Often referred to as Bird Shoals or Carrot Island by locals, it can only be accessed by boat. Lucky explorers might spot a few of the beautiful Carrot Island wild ponies congregating along the shore, an egret swooping down into the marsh or a sand fiddler crab scurrying across the mud. The 2,650-acre reserve is a favorite place for hiking, shelling and exploring the natural and human processes that affect coastal areas. The site was named for Rachel Carson, the scientist and author who conducted research on the island’s coastal habitat. Comprised of salt marshes, salt flats, tidal flats and eelgrass beds, the reserve is a favorite place for beachcombing, swimming and sunbathing.

More than 200 species of birds have been sighted on the reserve and a checklist of these feathered-friends is available. Guided nature tours are offered from 8:3010:30am, Tuesday and Thursday, June through August, including nature hikes and cruises offered by the Friends of the Reserve. Closed toe shoes, sunglasses, hats, water and sunscreen are recommended. Guests should be prepared to get their shoes wet and muddy, especially during the nature hikes. With a soothing blend of convenience, attractions and solitude, Atlantic Beach is the oldest of the five towns along Bogue Banks. It was here, where decades ago a ferry would bring vacationers for a day to frolic in the waves and lay in the warmth of the sun. The town continues to be not only a vibrant vacation spot, but a favorite for Carteret County residents ready for their day in the sun. While the amusement Circle everyone came to love through the 90s is no longer in business, the town’s center is used for outdoor movies, concerts and an array of special events during the summer months. It’s the towns laid back spirit, however, that keeps people coming back for more.

With ample opportunities for surfing and fishing, Atlantic Beach is home to one of the three remaining fishing piers on the island. The Oceanana Fishing Pier and the accompanying hotel are a traditional stop for many families looking to avoid the crowds during summer vacation. Atlantic Beach is close to shopping and dining options and convenient to area attractions. One of the most popular, Fort Macon State Park, is located at the northern tip of the island. PINE KNOLL SHORES A sanctuary for turtles, birds and trees, the residential community of Pine Knoll Shores is the midway point between Atlantic Beach and Indian Beach and features one of the most natural untouched areas of Bogue Banks despite its population of just over 1,500 residents. Visitors will notice an historical marker along Hwy 58 noting the site of one of the first landings in the New World by Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, putting the area on the map – literally – long before Pine Knoll Shores was born. Alice G. Hoffman purchased most of the land on Bogue Banks extending from Atlantic Beach to the Emerald Isle town line in hopes of creating a private retreat. Local historians have documented

that in 1935 Hoffman’s land passed to a trustee, Llewellyn Phillips. In 1939 it went to John Marshall Mathias, who served as trustee for four children of the late President Theodore Roosevelt, a relative of Hoffman’s. The children allowed development of the property with a focus on minimal disturbance to the land around them, making Pine Knoll Shores one of the state’s most environmentally-sensitive towns. Pine Knoll Shores is home to one of the state’s three aquariums, which is open year-round. Fort macon state park If there was a center for the Crystal Coast’s Civil War history it would be deep within the walls of Fort Macon State Park, North Carolina’s second most visited state park. The five-sided brick fortress stands as proudly today as she did in the 1800s, complete with battle scars to show for her years of protection. Garrisoned in 1834, Fort Macon was seized from Union forces by the Confederate army at the start of the Civil War. But in April of 1862, Union forces recaptured the oceanside fortress, giving the North control of the entire NC coast. A reenactment of the bombardment is celebrated annually, and 2012, the 150th anniversary of the event, is sure to bring an array of special events to the park.

A new visitors center and education space helps serve the approximate 1.3 million visitors to the site, sharing the story of Fort Macon and providing a backdrop for workshops and conferences. In addition, audio programs, displays and a variety of artifacts throughout the protected site help illustrate what life was like at the fort during its years of service. The fort is the focal point of Fort Macon State Park, which encompasses 385 acres of pristine beach, dunes and maritime forest just east of Atlantic Beach. At the park’s beach access, visitors can fish from rock jetties or park at the bathhouse area for swimming and summer concessions. The park opens at 8am and closes at sunset. Wish You Were Here PKS Kayak for the Warriors Paddle through the canals and Bogue Sound around Pine Knoll Shores during the 5th annual Kayak for Warriors on Saturday, June 9. Choose to race, or set a leisurely pace while enjoying the scenery to benefit wounded and fallen service members and their families. In 2011, this event raised $39,000 for Hope for the Warriors. Funds assist the organization and its efforts to financially support injured service members, including spouse scholarships, wounded warrior barracks, spouse support groups, dependent children’s Hope n Comfort Bears, morale activities and tools for recovery. Friday night kicks off the event with a reception and auction at the Pine Knoll Shores Town Hall from 5-6:30pm on Friday, June 8. The cost is a $5 donation and is free to wounded warriors, sponsors, volunteers and race participants. Enjoy artwork from several local artisans and a silent auction. Kayakers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate. Entry into the 3.2-mile kayak and paddleboard race is a $45 donation for single human-powered kayaks or paddleboards, or $80 for tandem kayaks, and includes registration, a T-shirt and hotdog lunch. Participants need to arrive by 9am and the race starts at Garner Park on Oakleaf Drive at 10am. The family fun race allows participants to float along in any paddle-worthy vessel in a short route along Garner Park for a $20 donation and starts at 10:30am.

Awards will be distributed at Garner Park from 11:30am-1pm, along with lunch, raffles and fun for all. For those who prefer pedals, the event also includes a casual 5K and 10K fun bicycle ride though Pine Knoll Shores before the kayak race at 8:30am at McNeil Park on Oakleaf Drive. Heading to the Big Rock Fish tales led to this tournament that has grown to become one of the North Carolina’s biggest blue marlin tournaments. The annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament will return to the streets and waters surrounding Morehead City for its 54th event from June 8-16. Participants can enter a variety of levels or all levels for $18,000 with an opportunity to win more than $1 million. Fishing days are scheduled from 9am-3pm, June 11-15 and 8am-2pm, June 16. Boats are able to fish four out of the six available fishing days. Honoring tradition, ladies are first and the Lady Angler Event will kick off the beginning of a schedule full of area happenings. The 15th annual Kelli Wagner Big Rock Lady Angler Party will be held at the Crystal Coast Civic

Center from 6-9pm on Friday, June 8 and include a best dressed contest, heavy hors d’oeuvres and open bar. Tickets are $25 and available in advance at tournament headquarters or at the door. Fishing teams will receive tickets at time of registration. The Lady Angler Tournament will be held June 8-9. Other events include: • Captain’s Party: 7-11pm on Saturday, June 9, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. Tickets are $60. • Big Pig Pickin’: 6-9pm on Sunday, June 10, at Jaycee Park. • Ladies Day Fashion Show: 11am on Tuesday, June 12 and 2pm on Wednesday, June 13, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. Tickets are $25. • Wednesday Dinner: 7pm on Wednesday, June 13, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. • Awards Banquet: 7-10pm on Saturday, June 16, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. Tickets are $30. Celebrating Independence Join family, friends, neighbors and visitors and gather around the downtown Morehead City water-

front to watch the streets come alive as the city hosts July 4th festivities. The main event will feature a fireworks display over the water at 9pm followed by a fun filled evening with entertainment perfect for dancing. This annual affair is centered around Jaycee Park on 9th and Shepard streets. The Crystal Coast is known for having plenty of Independence Day activities for all. One of the more unique events, hosted by Discovery Diving, is the annual Fourth of July Underwater Bike Race to benefit the Children’s Mile of Hope. The race starts at 3pm and occurs on the starboard side of the USS Indra. The Indra, originally a landing ship tank used to repair landing craft, was sunk in 1992 as part of the NC Artificial Reef Program. It rests in 60 feet of water. Transportation will be provided to and from the Indra abroad the Outrageous V for $65 per diver or, private vessels are welcome. There is also a bike decorating bonanza held at the dive shop prior to departure and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed bike and rider. There will be a limited number of bikes available and divers are encouraged to bring their

own. Additional happenings on July 4th include: • Cannon Firing, Fort Macon State Park, at 10:30 and 11:30am and 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30pm. • Fourth of July Parade, downtown Beaufort, starts at 11am and is followed by free ice cream and music at the Carteret County Court House. • Emerald Isle Fireworks, Bogue Inlet Pier, fireworks start at 9pm. • Atlantic Beach Fireworks, Atlantic Beach Circle, amusement rides from 1-11pm, waterslide open from 10am-7pm, live music at 7pm and fireworks start at 9pm. Barta Boys & Girls Club Billfish Tournament Well known for his rugged tough-guy approach to hunting and fishing, Tred Barta’s true test became a reality in May 2009 after he suffered a spinal stroke that led to his paralysis. Barta, host of “The Best and Worst of Tred Barta,” continues his sport in an off-road wheel chair and proves to be an inspiration to those who face challenges. The county is gearing up for the 9th annual Barta Boys & Girls Club Billfish Tournament, July 19-21, in Beaufort. The event donates all proceeds directly to the Boys

& Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina and perfectly harmonizes with the clubs mission to offer encouragement to all children by helping them realize their full potential, just as Barta learned through his own journey. This 100 percent release billfish tournament is part of the NC Governors Cup Billfish Series. The entry fee is kept low to enable any size boat, family or pocket book an opportunity to fish. Early entries are $500 for boats 39 feet or less for the first 20 boats. The first 20 will also be entered in a cash drawing to receive the entry fee back. Other entry fees range from $500 to $1,200 and include an entry into the inshore tournament. For those interested in the inshore tournament only, the entry fee is $350 and includes four tickets to all dinners, a captain’s bag and beverages. MOREHEAD CITY The largest community in Carteret County, centrally-located Morehead City, is also the retail hub of the region. From its walkworthy waterfront with a mixture of locally-owned shops to the large well-known chains that surround the western edge of town, Morehead City is an ever-growing community with a rich historic past. The cornerstone of the community is one of the state’s two shipping ports where military ships and freighters from all over the world can be seen coming and going on any given day. While big in stature, it does little to overshadow Morehead City’s own fleet – its charter boats that line the working waterfront. The plethora of fishing char-

ters and tournaments has put the region in the sites of big game fishermen across the state and beyond. June brings the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, now more than 50 years old, for a week of fishing, fun and a purse that consistently tops the $1 million mark. Thanks to several area advocates, Morehead City is also known for being a gateway to the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Named as one of the country’s best dive locations by several national magazines, thrill seekers will find several dive shops in the area ready to help them explore the treasures beneath the surface. As with other area communities, seafood is abundant in Morehead City – with several large waterfront icons that are ready to serve up the day’s catch any way you’d like it. Watch the fish roll in from the working boats each evening, then sit down for a big plate of whatever is on the day’s menu. Of course walking it off with a sunset stroll is completely OK, too. THE HISTORY PLACE Lauded time and time again for its vast genealogy library, The History Place in Morehead City is a great place to get an overall history of the region. For genealogy and Civil War buffs, the Jack Spencer Goodwin Library houses more than 6,000 publications and an extensive county photo file. The Civil War collections are especially notable – drawing a large research audience annually to the site. The museum itself is nothing short of a success story. Originally housed on the campus of Carteret Community College, the Carteret County Historical Society members undertook a fundraising campaign that would bring them to a new home in downtown Morehead City more than 10 years ago. An old furniture store was renovated to house exhibits, the library, meeting space and a small café. Space rentals and the leased restaurant space continue to buoy the nonprofit operation. From Carteret County’s relationship with the sea to its military history, the stories are told here at The History Place. Browse the antique doll collection, Native American artifacts, award-winning carved decoys, vintage clothing, period furniture,

military memorabilia, coastal artwork and more. Learn the history of shrimp boats, read about the Tuscarora Indians and take a look at the carriage Civil War spy Emeline Pigott was riding in when captured. It is purported that Pigott carried more items of importance in her petticoat than would fit in any modern-day suitcase. The museum store offers unique gifts and a wide variety of local books and merchandise for all ages. Publications feature the Civil War, black history, pirates, poetry and local cookbooks. Beaufort’s Treasures The Old Homes Tour Welcomes Guests

tanding today are the historic Beaufort homes where early sea captains, seafarers and merchants once lived. Each home has its own unique stories, treasures and history that contribute to the area and its inimitable charm and salty air. Beaufort boasts more than 100 homes in its National Registered Historic District that are more than a century old, as well as several private residences that are more than 200 years old. Each year, the picturesque seaport town invites guests to explore its rich history by touring some of its most historic homes. The 52nd annual Beaufort Old Homes & Gardens Tour, June 22-23, allows visitors and locals alike to leisurely stroll down the tree-lined streets through historic homes, buildings and gardens. The tour offers exciting tales of star-crossed lovers, famous pirates and Confederate spies that are sure to entertain anyone who enjoys the lure of the sea. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore restored historic homes, manicured gardens, churches and public buildings throughout the town. The tour

features everything from small cottages to double-porch homes, including 12 private homes, artist studios, streets adorned with plein air artists, an antique car show, musical concerts and narrated tours of the Beaufort Historic District aboard a vintage English double-decker bus. Since 1960, this annual weekend has been the largest fundraiser for the Beaufort Historical Association, supporting the agency’s preservation efforts and educational programs. “It’s the way everyone opens their doors, literally, to all our many visitors and the whole town comes alive with different events surrounding the homes and gardens that makes it such a special event for our community. Our Southern hospitality really is unmatched,” said Old Homes Tour committee chair, Lucia Stanley. Each of the private homes on the tour offer distinct personalities. The Carteret Chorale will present a concert at 8pm on Thursday, June 21 to commence the weekend activities at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The concert will honor this year’s honorary chairs, John and Polly Hagle, as well as the many volunteers who contribute to the success of this event. The concert is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception at the parish hall. Held in conjunction with the homes tour, the Antique Show and Sale will be held June 22-24, with dealers from throughout the Southeast, displaying furniture, silver, crystal, jewelry, linens, dolls and much more. New this year, a glass restoration specialist will be on hand to repair treasured keepsakes while visitors shop. This event will be held from noon-8pm on Friday, June 22; 10am-6pm on Saturday, June 23; and 10am-3pm on Sunday, June 24, at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. The weekend will end with a picnic concert featuring the return of the Carteret County Community Band presenting pieces reminiscent of an era when community bands were the staple of entertainment in small towns. Tickets for the Old Homes & Garden Tour are $16 in advance or $20 on the day of the event. Antique Show tickets are $7 for all three days. Combination tickets are available for $20 in advance and $24 on the day of the event. Visitors to Beaufort (pronounced “Bô-furt”) are quick to discover that history is alive in this small seaport town. Noted as North Carolina’s third oldest town, Beaufort retains much of its history from past centuries. Incorporated in 1722 as Fish Towne, it’s not hard to guess what the region was known for. BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE If there was a core to the historic town of Beaufort, the Beaufort Historic Site on Turners Street would be it. Cited for recognizing the town’s historical significance more than 50 years ago the Beaufort Historical Association, which maintains the site, has been a leader in the restoration and preservation of some of the town’s most prestigious structures. The site itself includes 11 historic buildings and the Old Burying Ground on Ann Street. Buildings include the Courthouse of 1796, the oldest surviving wooden courthouse in the state; the apothecary shop, circa 1859; the Carteret County Jail, circa 1829; the Rustell House, circa 1732 and others. Enhanced by authentic artifacts, a double-decker tour bus and facts and stories that have been passed down through the ages, the Historic Site has document-

ed the lifestyles and customs of Beaufort’s past to preserve its historical identity for the future. Throughout the year, the Beaufort Historic Site offers a variety of tours, seminars, volunteer opportunities and special events, including several of the town’s largest annual social engagements. From the educational Kindergarten Thanksgiving to the popular Old Homes & Gardens Tour held each June, there is always something on the horizon at the Beaufort Historic Site. In addition to its own events, the grounds host three shows and sales by the Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition annually and are available as a special event rental. Cape Lookout National Seashore

Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, the Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped cape allows for true-to-nature camping, features a renovated lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach, daily ranger programs and facilities in summer. There are no guarded beaches or maintained roads, as to preserve the seashore’s pristine and serene nature. For those seeking to discover the cape’s history, remnants of old gun mounts are visible on an ocean side walk between the rock jetty and Cape Point. Many visitors come to the National Seashore to view the black and white diagonal checkerboard-patterned Cape Lookout Lighthouse. A landmark since 1859, it is now maintained by the National Park Service, who has rehabilitated the lighthouse tower to allow for public access Thursday through Saturday, mid-May through September. The visitor’s center, found near the South Core Banks ferry dock, has a shaded pavilion and boardwalk connecting it to the area adjacent to

the Keepers’ Quarters, which has been renovated and includes new exhibits. The Cape Lookout Light Station Visitor Center and Keepers’ Quarters Museum is open to the public 9am through 5pm, April through November. Exhibits focus on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. A bookstore features items related to the National Seashore and also carries bottled water and insect repellent. In addition to its lighthouse, Cape Lookout National Seashore includes adjacent Shackleford Banks, site of the extinct fishing village Diamond City, with large dunes and wild Outer Banks ponies. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, are open April through November and picturesque Portsmouth village, found at the northeastern tip of Core Banks, is a 250-acre uninhabited island community dating from 1753 and preserved as a national historic site. A visitor center located on Harkers Island is open year round from 9am-5pm (except for Dec. 25-Jan. 1). Exhibits tell the story of island communities, the Life Saving Service and other local history. An indoor theater offers two short films on a rotating schedule, and the visitor center bookstore features books, tapes, videos and children’s items related to Cape Lookout National Seashore. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no fast food, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Visitors and campers, remember to take whatever is needed to eat or drink, sun and insect lotions, hats and shoes and to bring out all that you carry in, including trash.

Heritage and tradition are alive and well in Down East Carteret County. Rich in maritime history and folk arts, this rural region sweeps visitors back in time to a more laid back, simpler time. Some of the country’s most talented boat builders are hidden amidst the small clustered communities. Commercial fishing continues to be a mainstay. Found east of Beaufort along Hwy 70, Down East encompasses the communities of Atlantic, Bettie, Cedar Island, Davis, Gloucester, Harkers Island, Lola, Marshallberg, Otway, Sea Level, Smyrna, Stacy, Straits and Williston. Each of these communities are unique and rich in maritime heritage and beauty, which was recognized in 2009 as part of the Outer Banks Scenic Byway. On Harkers Island, you’ll find the National Park Service Visitor Center offering information on Cape Lookout Lighthouse and the Outer Banks. There are also marinas, campgrounds and accommodations, plus ferries and charter boat services for visitors ready to hop over to the islands for the day. At Cedar Island, travelers have the option of jumping on a state ferry to Ocracoke, a small village at the southern tip of the Outer Banks, to follow the byway north.

If one word could sum up the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center’s mission, it would be “preservation.” Found at the end of Island Road on Harkers Island, the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum strives to promote and preserve the Down East region’s valued heritage by showcasing the talents and skills 34

With a focus on decoy carving, boat building, storytelling, oral histories of the region, local writers, traditional music, food, hunting, fishing and other skills, the talent is bountiful Down East, and the Waterfowl Museum is a great place to find samples of it all. The museum’s goal is to pass these community strengths on to the next generation, educating residents and visitors alike about the crucial role these talents have played through history. Many heritage programs and demonstrations are offered throughout the year and the site’s Waterfowl Weekend, held the first weekend each December, is not to be missed. In Swansboro Small in stature but big on fun, the historic town of Swansboro comes to life each June for its annual Arts by the Sea Festival. Running from 9am-6pm on Saturday, June 9, the event closes the downtown streets to vehicular traffic and lines the sidewalks with a collection of vendors. “Over eighty vendors have pre-registered for this year’s festival,” said Judy Hailey, executive director. “We are very excited about the quality of vendors that we have for this year’s event. Our Arts by the Sea event is a well known festival in the area, and we see vendors and visitors from all over Eastern North Carolina. This festival is a great opportunity to support crafters and purchase those one of a kind gifts for your home or friends.” The juried show represents some of the finest crafters from North and South Carolina, Virginia and more. Pottery, jewelry, paintings, stained glass, fiber, carvings, photography, sculpture, metal work and more are just a few of the crafts represented at this annual event. A special Kids Zone

will offer crafts and projects for children of all ages. This year, the festival will continue into the evening with the addition of the Wine Tasting Gallery from 5-8pm, sponsored by the Emerald Isle Wine Market. The wine tasting tent will be located on the corner of Church and Front streets. A number of well known wine distributors will be on hand to sample their special wines and local restaurants will offer samples of specialties. For those with limited wine knowledge, this is a great time to taste a variety of wines and purchase a few to take home with you. Tickets for this separate event are $25 in advance, $30 at the gate, and can be purchased at Christina’s Collectibles, The Mercantile, Through the Looking Glass and Emerald Isle Wine Market. Due to the large volume of pedestrian traffic during the festival, guests are asked to leave their pets, bicycles and skateboards at home. emerald isle With an almost perfect blend of modern amenities and old-fashioned beach town values, Emerald Isle has become a favorite vacation spot for families. Located at the far western end of Bogue Banks, the town’s warm hospitality and hometown charm make it a perfect beach getaway. indian beach & salter path Caught in the middle, in more ways than one, is the small town of Salter Path. Located in the middle of Bogue Banks, Salter Path is also right in the middle of Indian Beach. Watch the signs carefully as you drive first through Indian Beach and into Salter Path, then back through Indian Beach once more. The cozy residential communities swell each summer with second home owners and vacationers searching for a perfect stretch of beach.
