THE Beach From Atlantic Beach, the oldest of the five beach towns that dot Bogue Banks, to Emerald Isle, the largest, visitors find mile after mile of sun, sand and surf. The collection of communities feature a variety of accommodations, restaurants and shopping. The area, while limited in full-time population, swells each summer as second home owners and vacationers make the trek to the shore.

HALLOWEEN HAYRIDE: Take a fun approach to Halloween at Fort Macon State Park. The annual Howling Hayride involves a fun hayride around the park and includes a 1-mile hike along the Elliott Coues Nature Trail. Be sure to bring your flashlight! Suggested donation is $5. Festivities begin at 6:30pm on Saturday, Oct. 13.

SURF FISHING: Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation and The Reel Outdoors host the annual Gordie McAdams Speckled Trout Surf Fishing Tournament, which runs from 8am Saturday, Oct. 13 to Nov. 24. Registration is free. The Reel Outdoors is providing prizes for the top three anglers. Participants must register by Oct. 11 and all trout must be caught by fishing on foot (surf, pier, inlet, sound) from Fort Macon to Emerald Isle; no boats. Complete rules are listed on the registration form, which is available at The Reel Outdoors or the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation Community Center. They may also be downloaded at www.emeraldisle-nc. org/eiprd.

CRYSTAL COAST CON: The science fiction and gaming community is gearing up for the fourth Crystal Coast Con. The convention will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Mac Daddy’s in Cape Carteret. The one-day event is packed with door prizes, costume contests, sci-fi vendors and giveaways. Celebrity guests for this year’s convention include Eric Roberts of “Batman: The Dark Knight,” “The Expendables” and “Lost Girl” among others; Hannah Levien of “Supernatural”; Rick Mora from “Twilight” and others. Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come to the

National Seashore to view, and climb, and lighthouse, a landmark since 1859. On. On Shackleford Banks, history may wander past you in the form of the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

THE MAINLAND From Cape Carteret on the shores of the White Oak River to the downtown Morehead City waterfront, the small communities that dot the Carteret County mainland are as eclectic as their residents. As the retail hub of the region, centrallylocated Morehead City is a haven for shoppers with its small boutiques and major chain stores. But don’t overlook the smaller communities as each has a flavor all its own and plenty of treasures to explore. GARDEN LOVERS WEEKEND: While the fun of MumFest will be the draw in New Bern Oct. 12-14, Tryon Palace, with its glorious gardens in full bloom, will host a more subtle celebration. Garden Lovers Weekend opens the garden gate at no charge and allows visitors to enjoy the seasonal brilliance. Gardens will be free to the public from 9am-6pm on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13 and from noon to 6pm on Sunday, Oct. 14. Want to take a little home? The Fall Heritage Plant Sales runs Friday and Saturday at the Daves House. To learn more, visit www.tryonpalace.org.

BIRDING CRUISES: The NC Coastal Federation is hosting its fall birding cruises on the White Oak River from 10amnoon on Sunday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 18 led by local birding expert and federation board member, JoAnne Powell. The two-hour cruises, aboard a covered ferry boat, will move through estuaries of the White Oak River and Bogue Sound and participants will identify resident and migratory shorebirds, warblers, raptors and waterfowl. The program fee is $25 for nonmembers. Visit nccoast.org/events to register, or call 252-393-8185 for more information.

CHILI FEST: The annual NC Chili Festival be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20 in Havelock, and has a long history of raising funds to give to local nonprofit organizations in the community. Held at Walter B. Jones Park, the two-day span features rousing competition, a People’s Choice award, vendors, live entertainment and more.

16

www.nccoast.com

SEAFOOD DELAYS: With the region still recovering from the havoc left behind by Hurricane Florence, the NC Seafood Festival has postponed this October’s event with hopes of holding the festival in November. With the depth of planning that goes into an event of this size, nothing concrete was available at press time, however, the organization will announce the new dates on its website – ncseafoodfestival.org. Keep watch!

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. HORSE SENSE: Join biologist Dr. Sue Stuska for a walking tour of Shackleford Banks and the up close encounters with the wild ponies who inhabit the island on Saturday, Oct. 6 & Saturday, Nov. 17. Dr. Stuska’s intimate knowledge of the horses makes for an enlightening glimpse into the relationships, family bonds, behavior and daily life of these wild animals. The half-day walking trip treks deep into the dunes to find the horses and watch their behavior. The only charge is the ferry fee – $17 for adults and $10 for children. For more information, call 252-728-2250.

FALL AT THE BHA: The Beaufort Historical Association is hosting a pair of events on the weekend of Nov. 17-18, sure to set the holiday tone. On Saturday, Nov. 17, the annual Jumble Sale runs from 9am3pm and is sure to have a little treasure for everyone. Look for antiques and collectibles, fine art, pottery, vintage treasures, handmade jewelry, craft, holiday items, candles, books, homemade food and more. From 11:30am-1pm on Sunday, Nov. 18, the Community Thanksgiving Feast promises an old-fashioned gathering of friends, neighbors and visitors and a perfectly prepared holiday meal. Guests can eat on site or take their dinner home. Learn more by calling 252-728-5225.

MARSHALLBERG FARM: One of the largest producer of Russian sturgeon is right here in Carteret County and now is the time to get an inside peek as well as a taste of the decadent osetra caviar and smoked sturgeon it produces. Marshallberg Farms will offer guided tours and taste tests on Oct. 6, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.marshallbergfarm. com. Space is limited.

BASH AT THE BOATSHOP: Food, an open bar, live music and both live and silent auctions are expected for this year’s Boatshop Bash, an annual fundraiser for the Friends of the NC Maritime Museum. Planned for Saturday, Nov. 3, the party is held in the picturesque Boatshop on the Beaufort waterfront. Learn more by calling 252-504-7740. 22

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. With restored buildings and a variety of annual programs, the BHA transports visitors back to the first days of “Fish Towne.” Learn more at www.beauforthistoricsite.org.

CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

The 56-mile of Cape Lookout National Seashore is home to some of the most natural undeveloped stretches of beach to be found in the United States today. The three barrier islands that make up the park are only accessible by private boat or water ferry, so getting there may require a little planning as well as reservations during the busy summer months. But it’s well worth the journey. Find info at www.nps.gov/calo.

CORE SOUND WATERFOWL MUSEUM & HERITAGE CENTER Located on Harkers Is-

land, this clearinghouse of Down East heritage is a must stop for anyone curious about this culturally-rich rural region. Once dependent on the water that surrounds it, Down East families entwined with boat building, decoy carving, hunting and fishing – a story that is told through community exhibits, artifacts and special programs. Details: 252728-1500, www.coresound.com.

HISTORY MUSEUM OF CARTERET COUNTY

Morehead City’s only museum focuses on the rich, abundant history of this waterfront area. Visit an early school room, peek in to Carteret County’s fishing industry and touch the wheels of spy Emeline Pigott’s carriage. The Jack Spencer Goodwin Library, lauded for its genealogy materials, is available for public research. Details: 252-247-7533, www.thehistoryplace. org.

NC AQUARIUM AT PINE KNOLL SHORES

From the Mountains to the Sea, the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores explores the wildlife of North Carolina’s waterways with a focus on preservation of the state’s delicate ecosystems. One of the highlights, the 306,000-gallon Living Shipwreck, features sand tiger sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish gliding around a three-quarter-scale replica of a German U-boat found off the coast. Details: 252-247-4003, www.ncaquariums.com.

NC MARITIME MUSEUM

One of three maritime museums in the state system, the flagship in Beaufort tells the tale of Eastern North Carolina’s long-standing relationship with the ocean. Museum staff members have been involved with the preservation of artifacts excavated from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard the Pirate’s vessel that was lost just outside Beaufort inlet. For more info, visit www. ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST

Ready for a hike? Get back to nature with the Croatan National Forest, with its collection of hiking trails, boat launches, campgrounds and day-use areas. The Croatan is home to a large number of carnivorous plants native to the area, including the Venus flytrap. Headquarters is located at 141 East Fisher Ave., just outside of New Bern. Visit www.fs.usda. gov.

NEW BERN FIREMEN’S MUSEUM

FORT MACON STATE PARK

TRYON PALACE This regal centerpiece to New Bern’s historic districts is a reproduction of the mansion constructed in 1770 for Colonial Governor William Tryon, who, after spending just a year in the home, fled North Carolina to become governor of New York. The original home was destroyed by fire in 1798. Site includes the NC History Center, a state-of-the-art museum, theater and meeting space. Learn more at www.tryonpalace.org.

With a new visitor’s center and a schedule of daily programs, the state’s second most visited park continues to draw visitors to the northern peak of Bogue Banks with its 385 acres of beach, dunes and maritime forest. The well-preserved pentagonal brick fortress garrisoned for the Spanish-American War is always a favorite. Visit www.ncparks.gov. 28

Trace the steps of the first chartered fire brigade, the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company, and its competitors, the New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1. Established in 1955, the museum is currently raising funds to restore the Central Fire Station on Broad Street to its 1928 appearance, with hopes of relocating into the space. Fishing the Coast The warm waters of the Gulf Stream provide the Crystal Coast with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. The area is home to one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world for blue marlin; other fish caught along the Crystal Coast include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, red drum, false albacore, sea trout, striped bass, cobia, sailfish, dolphin and wahoo depending on seasons. HIGHLIGHTS

AB King Mack

The 2nd annual Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament is set to raise money for lifesaving equipment on behalf of the Atlantic Beach Volunteer Fire Dept. through its Fish for Life Initiative. The nonprofit tournament will last three weeks, Oct. 6-27. Anglers can fish anytime during the tournament dates, although fish have to be offloaded and weighed at Chasin’ Tails, Atlantic Beach, by 7pm each evening. The cost to enter is $250. A captain’s party is planned for Friday, Oct. 5 at Memories Beach Club. This year, the tournament hopes to grow to 100 boats and raise $15,000 for the fire department, which is in need of an AutoPulse Resuscitation System, a transport-friendly system that provides automated CPR to victims of sudden cardiac arrest. To register for the 2018 tournament, visit abkingmack.com.

Jumpin’ Mullets

The historic streets of downtown Swansboro host the Mullet Festival on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1314, as it pays homage to the bait fish that has become a seasonal favorite for diners as well. The festival began as a small community cookout and has blossomed into an event that is part of the small town’s heritage and culture. An estimated 20,000 visitors invade for two days of festivities, which is quite a draw considering the coastal village is home to less than 2,000 residents. Over 100 craft vendors along with food vendors will line to streets of downtown Swansboro, and of course the famous Jacksonville Rotary Fish Fry – there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. Live entertainment runs throughout the weekend on the centralized stage. Admission to the festival is free.
