Traditional Folk Arts Immerse Yourself in Decoy Carving on Harkers Island By Michael Candelario

Margaret Daniels smiles in the warm lighting of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center as she begins to tell the newest visitors about the museum’s history. You can sense a pride in her words, a heartfelt appreciation for the work that this establishment is doing. A volunteer, Daniels has lived in the Down East area of Carteret County all her life and is no stranger to the kind of cultural degeneration that can occur over time – the very loss of culture that the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center was established to preserve. “We saw our heritage going away,” she explained. “And it wasn’t stopping.” Pam Morris – the museum’s curator, collections manager, community resources director and general Jill-of-all-trades – agrees with Daniels. “If you think about the soul of Carteret County, it’s the fishing industry,” she said. “This museum is the holder of that feeling we don’t want to lose.” Established in 1992 as an offshoot of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild, the museum is rife with traditional Down East crafts – hand-built boats, carved decoy collections courtesy of local craftsmen, explanations of traditional waterfowl hunting methods. You name it, the museum has it. There is even a children’s educational room where parents can take their young ones to |

learn about the local environs and traditional craftwork. It is this room that is especially important. Every year, the museum hosts school groups and summer camps, teaching the kids about their heritage. In partnership with the local Carvers Guild from which it was spawned, the museum often hosts decoy carving demonstrations for both children and adults. As a member of the Grassroots Science Collaborative, the museum partners with the county school system to reach children in-classroom. In the summer of 2014 alone, there have already been two workshops for local teachers in which museum experts lectured on topics pertaining to local water quality. This is a normal practice for the museum, as curator Pam Morris explained. Teaching one child is admirable, she said, but instructing the educators allows her to efficiently reach hundreds of local children. That isn’t all the museum does to preserve Carteret County’s prestigious Down East heritage. Dec. 5-7 it’s holding the annual Core Sound Waterfowl Weekend. “Basically what it is,” explained Morris, “is a weekend that celebrates traditional arts and crafts.” There are decoy carving displays and competitions, artwork from local artists, craftsmen displaying their wares and live music.

Starting on Friday, the weekend kicks off with a ticketed party that previews the year’s craftsmen and carvers. But the main attractions happen on Saturday and Sunday, when the town is full to bursting with local foods, music, vendors and storytelling events. The museum opens its doors for all to enter and learn about the history behind the very heritage that is being demonstrated on the town’s streets. This year’s theme – “Celebrating the Working Men and Women of Core Sound, Past and Present” – is focused on traditional ways to make a living. Whether it’s fishing, hunting, guiding or boat building, Pam Morris is confident that the old ways are still alive and well. “It’s ingrained in our psyche. When the wind shifts to the north, people start gearing up for waterfowling.” The Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild hosts its Decoy Festival at the same time as the Waterfowl Weekend, albeit on the other side of town. But not to worry – there is a shuttle that runs between the two events so attendees can partake of both experiences. Jerry Talton, the Guild’s adult education coordinator, called the festival “probably the second biggest decoy festival on the East Coast” and said that many of his good friends are people he met at carving festivals – people from such diverse places as

nccoast.com

Louisiana and Long Island. “I’ve met people from all different walks of life, different areas … It’s just an eclectic group of people.” And when these eclectic folks get together, they display an incredible amount of artistry and artisanship. There are carving competitions, a decoy auction, retriever demonstrations and over 90 exhibitors touting their wares. The many styles of decoy carving catch the eye: traditional styles shaped almost, Talton says, like a football; his favored “contemporary antique” style, made to look like old-timey artifacts; and even intricately detailed, anatomically correct decoys. “I like to put racing stripes on mine,” Talton grins. “Call it ‘war paint.’” Sunday is “Youth Day,” during which anyone under the age of 18 can enter the festival for free. Dr. Stan Rule – the Guild’s coordinator for Youth Day – is passionate about getting children involved in the local carving culture. He has helped establish such wide-ranging activities as youth archery, decoy painting, a head carving contest, a duck calling competition and even a prize drawing for the young folk. For the youth decoy carving competition, the kids are separated by age groups – 11 and under, 12-14, and 15-17. Prizes are usually related to decoy carving and include gift certificates, decoys, compasses and other gear. Much

of the money made from food and door fees goes to fund local schools as well. “We try to get most of the kids to have something,” he said. But the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild doesn’t stop educating children on Youth Day. “[The Guild] is really about hanging onto the heritage,” said Dr. Rule. And they’re good at it. The third Saturday of every month, the Guild hosts kids’ carving from 10am-12pm. Kids use small sanding drums to work on pre-worked decoys and they get to take the end products home. Like the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, the Guild is also heavily involved in local schools. Carving demonstrations are performed in school classrooms and at a recent Partnership for Children gathering the Guild helped over 140 young kids paint duck silhouettes. The system is working. The youth are getting excited. “From the Guild, we’ve had three national champions for youth [carving],” Dr. Rule beams. With the amount of time and

effort spent enlightening kids to the local traditions, it’s doubtful these will be the last three national champions from Carteret County. The festival weekend is, at its heart, a community-wide celebration of our Carteret County heritage. A pride-filled party in honor of all the ways that the environment has allowed its inhabitants to thrive. Margaret Daniels, Core Sound Museum and Heritage Center volunteer, puts it best. “All up and down the road there’s vendors selling stuff,” she laughed. “It’s an experience that everyone should try.”

Local Flavor

The NC Seafood Festival Celebrates the Local Catch Whether it’s grilled grouper, clam chowder, crab cakes, steamed oysters or a good old fashioned shrimp burger, seafood lovers living or visiting the Carolina coast have an endless bounty of delicious options to choose from. It’s not the only reason folks visit. We have our national seashore, fishing, historic sites and museums and our comfortable hometown charm that makes visitors feel like they’re slipping into a pair of well-worn flip flops. But when asked what they like most about Eastern North Carolina, residents and vacationers alike point to the region’s access to an endless variety of fresh seafood. Each fall, the catch is celebrated, with all the pomp and circumstance it merits. And for some 28 years, the NC Seafood Festival has become as much of a draw as the seafood itself, bringing more than 150,000 to the Morehead City waterfront for the last hurrah of the year. That’s not to say that come Oct. 3-5 the 12 |

Morehead City waterfront will fill up with buffet lines and shrimp boats. The festival, which is presented this year by the NC Dept. of Agriculture Seafood Division, has grown to be the second largest in the state because of its diversity in entertainment as well, which includes two music stages, SasSea’s Playground for kids, flounder flinging, amusement rides, fireworks and an appearance by country music artist Colt Ford. “Got to Be NC is the official state identity program for agricultural products grown, raised, caught and made in North Carolina. That includes the bounty of fresh seafood caught off the Carolina coast,” said G.W. Stanley, domestic marketing manager of the NC Dept. of Agriculture. “We’re proud of our longstanding partnership with this event, and pleased to be the presenting sponsor this year.” And what will be presented, will be one for

the record books, organizers promise. And as always, it is the community that benefits the most. What began as a grassroots effort to raise awareness about local seafood and support local nonprofit organizations has taken on a persona all its own after 28 years. Recognized as the state’s second largest festival, the event has not only increased the visibility of Eastern North Carolina’s array of seafood, but it has provided a fundraising platform for nonprofit organizations throughout the region. Band and athletic boosters, Scout troops, churches, support groups and more are given an opportunity to sell their own, or festival merchandise, to raise money for their organizations. Since 1987, more than $1.8 million has been dispersed among participating groups. And it has all been done amidst the bells and buzzers of the midway, the delighted screams of children on the Ferris wheel and the aroma of seafood lifting up on the breeze.

nccoast.com

New this year, all vendors selling local caught seafood will yellow banners alerting visitors and making it easier than ever before to spot Carteret County’s catch. While seafood may be the focus, those with a hankering can find just about every kind of traditional festival offering, from corn dogs and burgers to ice cream and funnel cakes, and perhaps a few offering that are a little less ordinary, like alligator bites, sea urchin or marinated eel, dotted along Morehead City’s downtown waterfront. The food offerings are joined by more than 150 vendors featuring the wares of local artisans and Seafood Fest gear to take home, including T-shirts and the popular annual poster. If folks enjoy what they’re sampling throughout the festival, the seafood Open Air Market returns this year, giving visitors the chance to take a little piece of Carteret County seafood home with them. Local seafood house, Mr. Big’s on Harkers Island, is helping coordinate the daily arrival of local seafood for the market. The area includes representatives from area fishery organizations including Brunswick Catch, Ocracoke Fresh and local Carteret Catch, as well as others. These organizations are happy to discuss the proper handling, cleaning and storing of fresh seafood. A variety of other entities, including Sea Grant, NC Coastal Federation and NOAA will discuss the sustainability of availability of the state’s most precious commodity. Those who aren’t quite sure how to prepare their freshly purchased catch will find plenty of ideas at the festival’s popular Chef’s Tent – where regional chefs provide cooking demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday using locally caught seafood. Visitors will find a different chef each hour and taste tests for those lucky enough to grab a seat. “The idea is to cover all the bases,” said Stephanie McIntyre, executive director of the NC Seafood Festival. “People can sample local seafood, they can learn about how to buy it and handle it, watch a demonstration of someone cooking it and then purchase some and take it home to cook themselves. “Local residents who have grown up around seafood their whole life may know all there is to know about shrimp, but people who are just visiting our area and don’t have access to fresh shrimp may not know anything at all. We see people who have never seen a shrimp before. It’s so much fun to see people’s faces light up or to see how amazed the kids are when they see things for the first time.” Throughout the event, free parking is available at the NC State Port and the Boathouse at Front Street Village in Beaufort, with shuttle service provided free from both locations.

McIntyre said festival organizers are continuously reaching out to visitors to find ways to improve upon the event. And one thing she has heard regularly is the call for larger musical performances. “We asked and they told us – bigger acts, more country music and, we’ve answered this year,” she said. “It’s a big move for us, and unfortunately, higher caliber national acts do cost more. So this year we will be charging for one event on Saturday evening.” And that’s where Colt Ford steps in, an unassuming good old country boy from

Georgia, a one-time pro golfer turned songwriter and musician who has struck a chord with his growing fan base. There was a time when rap and country music weren’t so much as mentioned in the same conversation. But no more. With his groundbreaking blend of country music and hip-hop rhythms, Ford is a cultural force who is ready to go from cult status to a household name, from the mud trucker events where he started to arena stages, where he was seen this summer sharing the bill with Toby Keith during his “Shut Up and Hold On” summer tour. “I think it’s the best record I’ve ever done,” said Ford of his fifth album “Thanks for Listening”. “It’s got a lot of the different elements that I do well, and I push myself on some other things. The idea is to try to grow as an artist and still be who you are, and not completely forget to give the fans that made you what they like. I’ve never been more excited by new music than this.” From the unabashed rock ‘n’ roll kick of “Crank It Up” (where he sings all the vocal parts in a tour de force) and the country/

rap hybrid of “Cut ‘Em All” to the celebration of “The High Life,” his description of a typical weekend in the country, complete with a description of a biscuit and fried chicken dinner, and his own candid self-assessment in “Workin’ On,” Thanks for Listening is a celebration of the things near and dear to Colt Ford’s heart – America, country music, hard work, celebrating life with family and friends and simply having a damn good time in the process. “I’m just blessed to be able to play music,” he says. “Every artist who gets to do this for a living should thank their lucky stars, be humble and grateful. Tickets for the Saturday night headliner concert are $15 through Sept. 30, $25 after, and can purchased at ncseafoodfestival. org. “It’s a bit of an experiment for us,” said McIntyre. “But we’re excited to see the response. If people are interested in having larger national artists here in Morehead City, we’re prepared to move toward that. But, of course, larger acts are more expensive and our goal at the NC Seafood Festival, as always, is to see our profits go toward the many nonprofit organizations that participate year after year.” The financial burden of Ford’s appearance

Clare Dunn will be reduced greatly by ticket sales and longtime contributor, US Cellular taking on the role of stage sponsor for what is now referred to as the US Cellular Main Stage. “We are so pleased that US Cellular is continuing its support of the Seafood Festival,” said McIntyre. “Their support as stage sponsor will allow us to bring a great array of entertainment to the stage all weekend long.” Ford will be joined by Clare Dunn, whose debut single “Get Out” is just finding its place on country music stations around the country. Touring, she has opened for Keith Urban, Florida Georgia Line, Colt Ford, Parmalee, Hank Jr., Jamey Johnson and others as well as played major festivals as a single act. In all, more than 20 acts will provide everything from folk, bluegrass and modern rock to contemporary and traditional Christian music and dance. Local favorite Mommicked gets things off to a rousing start at 5pm on Friday. Additional acts include Millenia Funk’n, Slyde, Kasey Tyndall, AJR, Sweet Claudette, Six Pack of Gentlemen, Jim Quick & the Coastline Band and The Embers. On SasSea’s Stage visitors will have a chance to take in the Gumbo Lily, the Crystal Coast All-Stars, Masterpeace, The Spread, Eastern Tumble & Cheer and much more.

Fun for the kiddies is continued in SasSea’s Playground, which offers an all-day fossil dig on Saturday and Sunday, and a variety of hands-on activities for youngsters 8 and under. In addition, parents will find a changing and feeding station to make things more comfortable during their day on the waterfront.

Supporting Events

In addition to the street fair atmosphere that prevails along the Morehead City waterfront, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities that come attached to the Seafood Festival. From the Twin Bridges 8K at 8am on Saturday to the annual photography competition, the fall tradition continues to stretch outside of its boundaries to include all of Carteret County. Anglers will try their luck at a little surf fishing during this year’s Battle of the Piers Fishing Tournament. Lines are in the water from 8am-4pm on Saturday and 8am-3pm on Sunday at the Oceanana and Bogue Inlet piers. Six fish qualify for bragging rights, including spot, flounder, sea mullet, pompano, hogfish and bluefish. All must be caught by rod and reel and must be weighed by pier personnel. Entry forms can be found at ncseafoodfestival.org.

Colt Ford

At 10am on Sunday, spectators will gather at the NC State Port to honor the area’s commercial fishing fleet and those who have lost their lives through their profession. The Blessing of the Fleet sees vessels coming from north and south to join in this commercial fishing tradition. Boats parade past the port, tossing wreaths into the surf, as the names of those who have given their lives along the way are read out loud. Stories, music and keynote speakers mark the occasion and honor the fleet that brings in Carteret County’s catch year after year. Of course there is the road race at 8am on Saturday, tours of the NC State Port, the Southern Outer Banks Boat Show & Outdoor Expo at the port, fireworks at 9pm on Saturday and the sailing regatta on Sunday. Grab an armband and ride the amusements all day on Sunday for a flat $25 or spend Saturday afternoon in the wine garden enjoying North Carolina blends. Whoever you are, or whatever your tastes, the NC Seafood Festival has something for just about everybody.

Bringing the Coast Indoors

After a spring and summer of bright, colorful beach days and lazy afternoons on the dock, it’s always so disappointing when the weather begins its slow decline into fall and winter. Sure, there are still plenty of great things to do along the coast – but it simply isn’t the same as those sunny boat days enjoyed during the summer. The changing seasons, however, doesn’t mean you have to leave those days far behind. Instead, bring a little bit of that coast indoors to bring back those joyous memories throughout the year. It can be as simple as hanging a ship’s wheel above the fireplace and tossing a few marine-inspired throw pillows on the couch or as elaborate as wallpaper, paint schemes and furniture design. When it comes to integrating a nautical theme, decorators will find an array of options for every room of the house, as well as craft projects they can make at home.

18 |

For bedrooms and living rooms, be sure to toss in the classic blue and white stripes that are so commonly connected to the ocean. Let rope become an accent, using it to craft coasters, line picture frames or hang mirrors. Let the old become your future by using discarded life preservers, oars, crab pots or net as decorative items around the home. Breath new creative life into a variety of nautical items, from buoys to cleats. Add coral, soft blues, greens or yellows as accent colors to keep those summer days in the forefront of your mind. In the kitchen, use accent tiles, or simply buy a few to use as trivets when serving. A thin layer of adhesive cork can make just about anything a decorative coaster for hot serving dishes and pans. Keep white and blue in mind again, adding dishware, nautical art, towels and accessories to carry you theme as far as you’d like to take it.

Winter Blues Preparing the Boat for Winter

Regardless of whether a boat is stored inside or out, there are several important steps that have to be done to prepare a boat for winter storage: • Fill the fuel tanks and add the appropriate amount of stabilizer. Run the engine long enough to get the treated gas into the fuel line and engine. Most fuel now contains ethanol and if your fuel is left untreated over the winter it will deteriorate and cause engine problems. • Flush the cooling system and drain all the water from inboard and from inboard/outboard (I/O) engines. • Spray the engine with fogging oil to prevent rust. Check the spark plugs and replace them as necessary. • Replace the oil and oil filter on inboard and I/O engines. • Change the lubricant on the lower unit gear case on outboards and I/O engines. Even a little water trapped in the gear case can cause damage, especially if allowed to freeze. • Check the props for nicks. Even slight damage can hinder

performance and cause vibration, damaging other engine parts and the drive system. Some damaged props can be repaired by marine dealers for a fraction of the cost of a new one. • Store outboard engines in an upright position. Consider having the water pump impeller replaced every two or three years. The rubber legs can get stiff, reducing water circulation, or they may break off, eliminating coolant flow completely. • Spray a moisture-displacing lubricant such as a silicone product onto electrical terminals and the fuse panel. Read the label to make sure the spray is safe for use on electrical components. • Inspect steering systems, including tiller steering friction fittings on outboard engines. • Clean the backfire flame arrester on inboard and I/O engines with carburetor cleaner. • Drain water from the bilges and leave the transom drain plug out. • Hang life jackets up where they can air out. • Check the owner’s manual for instructions that are particular to your own boat, engine and trailer Remember, warns the Boat Owners Association of the United States (BoatUS) that water is your number one enemy. Keep the boat and trailer rig in a slightly bow-up position will allow water to drain. Don’t forget to remove the drain plug and tie it to the ignition key where you will find it in the spring. Also ensure that the boat’s cover is tight and periodically check inside throughout the winter – just to make sure no water is accumulating and that no critters have moved in. If storing the boat in the driveway, BoatUS suggests turning it around 180 degrees, with the tongue facing towards the house. Not only will this keep your neighbors guessing all winter long about that name on the transom, but it will make the job harder for a thief to steal your boat and that’s the real name of the game here. Adding a lock on the trailer hitch only improves your odds the bad guy will look somewhere else. In addition to being a theft deterrent, removing the tires and storing them inside the garage will keep the sun from damaging them. With the tires off, this may also be a good time to repack the bearings. Block the trailer’s frame and secure plastic (contractor grade) trash bags over the hubs and brakes to keep them dry. If tires won’t be removed, position the trailer so that the tires rest on a piece of plywood or plank to prevent dry rot, as parking on grass can hasten a tire’s demise. Cover tires (again with plastic bags or covers) to keep the sun off and hubs and brakes dry. When possible, avoid parking under trees. Howling winter storms can snap off tree limbs. Besides adding unsightly stains, falling leaves and needles can make their way inside, blocking transom drain holes, making your boat into a nice bathtub as it slowly fills with water over the winter and making the subsequent clean up much harder than it has to be. Quality maintenance will increase the lifespan of your boat and investment. Proper winterization will keep your boat in top operating condition and make the transition from winter storage to an enjoyable summer on the water much easier and less expensive.

Swansboro Rotary Presents King Mack Tournament Fall along the Crystal Coast is a busy time for anglers … and the active members of the Swansboro Rotary Club, which holds its king mackerel tournament Oct. 17-18. Boasting a “bigger purse and less competition,” the popular annual tournament has a guaranteed $30,000 first place award and a 50 boat cap. The first level entry fee is $1,200. Additional awards include a two-day aggregate award, heaviest king mackerel per day and high roller heaviest king. “We’re extremely excited about this year’s tournament,” said Brandon Sewell, a spokesman for the tournament. “It’s going to be bigger and better than ever. We’ve made a few changes, moved our weigh-ins and we’re looking forward to a great event.” A captain’s welcome party and meeting is planned for Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Swansboro Rotary Civic Center in Cedar Point and the awards party will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Saltwater Grill in downtown Swansboro. Friday and Saturday are fishing days with daily weigh-ins at the Saltwater Grill. A free concert by Jim Quick and the Coastline Band is planned for Saturday and the Rotary is hopeful that the community will

come out and enjoy themselves as well as the competitors. “We moved our weigh-ins to downtown Swansboro in hopes that this can really become a community affair,” said Sewell. “We will have vendors and exhibitors on Friday night and Saturday and we’d love to get a crowd down there Saturday for the concert. Following the motto of “Service Above Self,” the Swansboro Rotary has partnered with a variety of regional nonprofit agencies through the years. Donations earned through the organization’s two tournament per year have helped support Habitat for Humanity, Take a Kid Fishing, Take a Kid Shopping, the Rotary home at Lake Wacamaw and regional scholarships for students graduating from Croatan and Swansboro high schools. To date, scholarships alone have totaled more than $800,000, said Sewell. “We’ve really put our blood, sweat and tears into the tournament through the years, but it’s all worth it when you see how it gives back to the community on the other side,” he added. It sure gives our anglers a great reason to get in some great fishing, too.

Happy angling – tight lines to all!
