oing business along the Crystal Coast, like any rural community, is closely tied to the families that have long developed roots in the community. From auto dealers to restaurants and gift shops to clothing, many of these businesses have passed through generations, maintaining their quality and superior customer service along the way. Whether they’ve been in business for 75 years or five years, these family businesses are the fibers that quilt our small towns together. At NCCOAST we wanted to not only showcase these businesses that we all know and love, but salute them and their families for their efforts. We invite everyone to take a moment to stop in to share the same sentiment. Be sure to tell them you saw their photo in the Family Business. The Family Business was conceptualized and developed by NCCOAST Sales Manager Jamie Bailey

with Graphic Designer Mimi Guthrie handling the photography as well as the design and layout of the publication. Both are members of local families themselves and were excited to collaborate with old friends and new who do business in Carteret County. Jamie is a graduate of ECU and has been with NCCOAST for 12 years. She lives in Morehead City with her husband, Alan and her son, Hunter. Mimi, a graduate of the photography program at Carteret Community College, brought her talents in graphic design to NCCOAST’s family of publications in 2003. A newlywed, Mimi resides in Morehead City with her husband, Benji, and her son, Cohen.

It’s all about Relationships When it comes to doing business in a rural community a lot can be decided with a handshake. Business in Eastern North Carolina is built upon relationships. It’s about taking care of neighbors and knowing that one day they may be taking care of you. And it’s about people – both young and old – who are willing to stand behind the products they sell. That’s the philosophy with which Dick Parker opened his first used car lot in Morehead City in 1947; the same tenets with which his children, sons Randall and Richard and daughter Beth carry on his legacy today. For 66 years the Parker family has been synonymous with automobiles in Carteret County – whether it was that first used car lot or Parker Honda and Parker Buick/GMC which we recognize today. Building relationships through the years, the Parkers have stood the test of time becoming a true part of Morehead City’s history and heritage. “It’s about people. It’s about relationships,” said Randall Parker. “We know most of our customers, they’ve bought vehicles from us before and they return and their family members return and their children. We see a lot of generations – a lot of families, and that’s one of those things that makes it enjoyable working in Carteret County, the friends you make along the way.” While building relationships with clients is vital, the Parkers have also developed strong relationships with his staff, maintaining key personnel to help enrich the buyer experience. With a handful of 25-30 year employees and an array of 15-20 year employees, the family is proving that relationships are a vital thread in the fabric of business. That legacy continues with Randall’s children. Son Brian, a NC State grad, is the manager at Parker Honda and Hugh, a recent economics graduate from ECU, is transitioning into life at Parker Buick/GMC. Daughter Lindsay lives and works in Beaufort, but she reserves some time to draft ads for the family business and shine a spotlight on the dealership with television spots, making her part of the much needed support staff along with mom, Sylvia. “It’s a great opportunity to have that extra special relationship,” said Randall. “It does bring challenges, sure, but the opportunities far outweigh them. We have a unique relationship. We’ve been able to extend the father/son experience to our professional life and that is very rare today, and it’s very satisfying.” So is the shopping experience with the Parker family and its pair of multi-award winning dealerships. Parker Honda has been awarded numerous Honda President’s Awards while Parker Buick/GMC is a repeat winner of the GM Mark of Excellence award. The two showrooms represent both domestic and import vehicles, providing a diverse collection of cars, trucks and SUVs to choose from, whether you’re a first time buyer or a seasoned driver. And the Parkers are always ready to show customers a few of their favorites and begin building new relationships with the generation ahead.

Celebrating 75 Years In February of 2013 the Sanitary Fish Market & Restaurant hit a milestone rarely met by eateries – it celebrates 75 years of business on the Morehead City waterfront. The walls of the restaurant are lined with memorabilia, making it something of a timeline, tracing the steps of the family business through generations. In the middle of the walls, almost lost in the thousands of pieces that crowd them, are photographs of the late Capt. Jesse Lee “Tony” Seamon and Capt. Ted Garner, who partnered in 1938 to open the counter diner with a dozen stools. Seamon, who worked in construction, and Garner, who was originally a barber, began taking parties out on the Monnie M. for a little coastal fishing. Hotels were limited so fishermen often spent the night on the boat, and since many of the patrons weren’t familiar with the cleaning and cooking of the fresh catch, Seamon would cook the fish while afloat. At the urging of customers, the pair set up a couple of kerosene burners and a counter close to the dock, making it easier for folks to enjoy the seafood without having to take a fishing trip. It was an instant hit – lines formed the first day they opened and haven’t stopped yet. Families return year after year to the ever-growing building nestled over the water, making it a tradition of their annual vacation. And celebrities, both local and national, would swing by for a taste of the seafood everyone was raving about. Some newcomers simply don’t understand the fuss, while others, who have long established roots to Carteret County and subscribe to the relaxed, traditional way of life that the region has become famous for, will quickly say that many a beach memory has been made under the Sanitary’s roof. From matchmaking and weddings to providing a first job for thousands of the area’s teenagers, the Sanitary has a foothold in Carteret County that runs as deep as the oceans that sustain it. The Garner and Seamon partnership lasted until Garner’s death in 1978. Ted Garner, Jr. purchased the restaurant outright in 1979 and while he still oversees the restaurant, the day-to-day operation is left to son Jeff and daughter Lisa. The one thing customers expect is consistency, said Jeff Garner, and that means serving the highest quality of seafood available. “We get fresh what we can when it’s in season,” he said. “We’re proud that we’ve been able to support our local fishing industry for 75 years.” And with 75 years under its belt, it’s safe to say the Sanitary will continue to draw customers for as long as there is seafood to serve. “Not only are we the third generation of owners, but we’re welcoming fourth and fifth generations of customers,” said Garner. “People come back year after year. People come because their grandparents ate here. It’s not just a family tradition for us, it’s a tradition for generations of repeat customers.”

Tommy Morrow opened Atlantic Beach Surf Shop in 1964 at the age of 15, creating a landmark on Bogue Banks and the oldest surf shop in the state. In 1982 it moved to its current location and in 2007 doubled in size, expanding the lines carried to accommodate customer requests. Sons John and Chuck Morrow now handle day-to-day operations, charting the store’s course into the future. With its vast array of merchandise found under one roof, AB Surf Shop, as it is more commonly referred, has become a destination in and of itself – bringing surfers and water sport enthusiasts to Atlantic Beach to nab that hard to find item. With a knowledgeable staff and deep growing roots in Carteret County, the shop looks forward to celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014.

Families Serving Families Since 1925

It all began in 1925 in a small room over the Bank of Morehead City, which was located on the corner of 8th and Arendell streets. In February of that year, H.S. Gibbs, an employee of the Bank of Morehead City, decided to leave the banking business to become a life insurance agent. Gibbs purchased a typewriter with a close associate and friend, S. A. Chalk, and opened the doors of his Equitable Life Assurance Company Agency. Shortly afterwards, Chalk joined him in his endeavor. On April 2, 1925, the two friends shook hands and established what is among the oldest partnerships in the county and Carteret County’s oldest general insurance agency, Chalk & Gibbs. These two farsighted men maintained a close and friendly working relationship as partners and in the community, taking the company from its one room operation to its present size. While neither were natives of Carteret County, both Chalk and Gibbs took an active interest in the growth of the county. Both men served as mayor of Morehead City and as president of the Morehead City Rotary Club. Gibbs served as a state representative for five consecutive terms, as a member of the Morehead City Port Commission and as an original member of the State Ports Authority. Four generations later, Chalk & Gibbs continues to maintain the close working relationship of its founders that has proven to be the primary ingredient in the company’s success. The fullservice independent insurance and real estate agency maintains the honesty, stability, integrity and service to the customer which was instilled by the founders. Civic leaders, volunteers, coaches and contributors, the principal partners also continue the strong connection to community involvement that was established by their forefathers. The business represents many major fire and casualty companies, life and health insurance companies, and a broker’s license allows the staff to work as agents for other insurance companies, giving a broader base from which to operate. It also has a full-service real estate department offering sales, appraisals and property management. Chalk & Gibbs has grown through the years – and with the growth, it’s commitment to Carteret County and its residents has grown as well.

McQueen’s Interiors, a full service interior design store, opened in 1973, on the Causeway in Atlantic Beach, by Danny McQueen, something of a one-man band. He’d sell the furnishings during the day and deliver them in the evening, growing his family business along the way. Now boasting a 12,500 square foot showroom in the Pelletier Harbor Shops in Morehead City, the next generation, daughter Dana McQueen, is at the helm. Deeply rooted in Carteret County, the store and its staff of interior designers aim to reflect the coastal environment – be it shabby chic, transitional or traditional, a second home on the Crystal Coast or a primary residence. It’s not only a mission they take seriously, but one they look forward to providing each day. With some staff members who have been there as long as 30 years, McQueen’s consistently brings its best to the table day after day. Knowing that the most important thing in creating a perfectly designed home is a client’s happiness, the designers at McQueen’s have achieved the pinnacle of success through the satisfaction of their clientele.

Blending Creativity & Service Chef Tim Coyne and his wife, Libby Eaton, moved to Carteret County in October 1992 from the Detroit area, with dreams of owning a small “bistro” on the ocean. Within six months of moving here, an opportunity to buy a small run down grill that was located by the ocean presented itself and the couple rolled the dice on the pink and green hole-in-the-wall, 50 seat “chance.” Armed with only the knowledge of his Italian roots and his background in fresh, made-to-order cooking, Chef Tim opened the Bistro-by-the-Sea with no deep fat fryer or microwave! Many locals looked at the menu and commented (especially after seeing liver & onions as a selection) that he would never make it. Thankfully, fresh, locally sourced ingredients and exemplary cooking crosses all cultural, regional and international lines of communication and the gamble paid off. Locals and tourists alike waited for a seat for hours to partake in the Bistro’s creations. After four years of rocking and rolling in a 50-seat square, Chef Tim and Libby decided to find more land to accommodate their guests’ need for adequate parking and general breathing room in the restaurant. For many years, Libby had the love of old movies where patrons would sit at a piano bar, sipping on their martinis and enjoying the live entertainment featured that evening … thus, the dream of the new BBTS was born. Keeping in mind the “by-the-sea,” the couple found a large piece of property located on a major road, Hwy 70/Arendell St., in front of a major hotel chain, the Hampton Inn, with a view of Bogue Sound in 1997. BBTS Restaurant & Private Banquets has been a mainstay of midtown Morehead City since its completion in May of 1997 with a piano bar and the consistent, fresh, locally sourced creations of Chef Tim, his Sous Chef Chris Bossard and their impeccable service team lead by Libby Eaton. After 30 years of marriage, the couple believes no one will run their business like they will, so “absentee ownership” is not even in their vocabulary. When you visit Bistro-by-the-Sea, Libby will be on hand to greet you and Chef Tim will inevitably be in the kitchen waiting for your order. Consistency in food and service is of the utmost importance. Tim and Libby strive every day to bring unique culinary and cultural entertainment and exposure to their patrons. To them, that is what being in the hospitality profession is all about … being creative and open minded!

Jack’s opened in 2008 and was a collective effort of family, friends, local business owners and the town. With no coolers or equipment they armed themselves with a collection of ice chests, stacked together to keep the cans of beer cold. All they needed was lots and lots of volunteers and so Jack’s was born, carrying on the name of Jeff ’s father, Jack McCann. Jeff and Keri planned to close to put the finishing touches on the bar – but it was so well received they just kept serving beer out of the coolers of ice and water until they could afford some equipment. Little by little, the bar formed its own personality as a live music venue. They have been lucky enough to host The Band Perry before they hit it big and hope to be able to say the same for many other up and comers like Bryan Mayer, better known to the locals as Stretch. And today, Jack’s hosts some of the most talented singers, songwriters and musicians, some who now have become friends. What started out, as second jobs for both Jeff and Keri has become a venue to create some amazing memories. Keri would receive texts from very close friends that read “See you at Jack’s” and so that became the tagline and how the staff finish every announcement. With one of the prettiest sunsets, the once fish house which gave many years to the waterfront’s fishing fleet, now lends itself to hosting some of the most amazing fundraisers, (just to name a few) Reelin’ for Research for the NC Children Hospital, Wigging Out for Locks of Love, Hospice House, Carteret County Domestic Violence and Communities in Schools. Not to be overshadowed by some of the most beautiful wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, amazing 16th to 60th birthday parties and 1st to 50 year anniversaries. The couple admits they are very lucky to have had the support to make it all happen. And now the support to keep it going and even grow – the support of what they call their extended family, their staff. The family of owners, staff and friends are dedicated to keeping the integrity of the business and its name and its future at a standard that everyone can be proud of. Keri said that while it may sound corny, they all give each other a hug at the end of the night – it’s important to understand the power of a hug. They have a strong team of people, who make things happen and Jeff and Keri are thankful to everyone who has made Jack’s a popular stop for locals and visitors throughout the year. See you at Jack’s!

In 1999 Hallock Howard, her parents Pam and Buddy Cooper, and a few close family friends opened Amos Mosquito’s on the Morehead City waterfront. In 2003 the restaurant moved to its current location in Atlantic Beach and added another layer of family and friend partnership: Hallock’s husband Sandy joined the team and, later, their friend Dave Brumley came aboard. Family is not just a behind-the-scenes theme at Amos Mosquito’s; it’s their core market. It is Eastern North Carolina’s premier family restaurant, a place where kids can have fun and their parents can get a great meal. With an emphasis on fresh, local foods, they make all their sauces, dressings and desserts in house. Hallock worked at another family business while growing up, her grandfather’s Oceanana Resort. She loved the fact that families came back every year for their vacations in a tradition that was passed from one generation to another. Last summer, when a family of vacationers was leaving Amos Mosquito’s, she overheard one of the children say to Sandy, “See you next year.” She smiled as she realized that they achieved the same thing her grandfather had. Amos Mosquito’s had become part of other families’ summer traditions.

Since 1990, Mary Duane and Charles Hale have focused on finding just the right home for folks visiting or moving to the Crystal Coast. Opened with partners Alan Shelor and Mack Baker, the couple purchased the company outright in 1996 and has since acquired two additional rental companies, making the business one of the largest vacation rental agencies along the Crystal Coast. With that focus in mind, Atlantic Beach Realty now handles everything in-house – housekeeping, maintenance and laundry services – making a stress-free vacation for both visitor and homeowner. With more than 240 vacation rentals under its management in Atlantic Beach and Pine Knoll Shores, the husband and wife team and their knowledgeable staff have become experts in their field. They’ve gotten to know their customers on a first-name basis and see families return year after year for a beach vacation. “We feel fortunate to live and raise our children in such a beautiful place – and then we get to share this with others and tell them about the Crystal Coast,” said Mary Duane. “We love the small town atmosphere and could not imagine doing business anywhere else.”

It’s a Family Affair The late Elijah James Willis opened the doors of EJW as a bicycle shop in 1946 in a one story building on Arendell Street next to Munden Funeral Home. The popular local shop would expand its inventory through the years – and change the faces that stood behind the counter – but it has always been the local’s spot for high quality outdoor gear. Like all family businesses, EJW was passed down from generation to generation. Elijah’s son, David Thomas Willis, who retired from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, came next. His son, David Ellis Willis, soon joined him in the endeavor. With a love of fishing and hunting, the men added to the store’s inventory, taking the focus away from bicycles and focusing on area fishing, hunting and recreation. It was the fourth generation, David Thomas Willis, II, named for his grandfather, who would carry the business into the 21st century. Working at the store from a young age and sharing his father’s love of the outdoors, it was obvious early on that “Little Dave” would stay in the family business. Six years ago he moved to the current location and partnered with longtime friend and businessman Curtis Struyk. With Struyk’s help, the business expanded even further, now offering everything from bicycles to bait and bow and arrows to Brownings with a complete service and repair department. These extended business offerings help carry the business forward and make EJW an even more vital part of the Carteret County landscape for locals and visitors alike.

r. Jeffrey Moore has practiced in Carteret County since 1988. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Moore opened Moore Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in 2010, specializing in primary, complex and revision total joint replacements, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee, and surgery of the hand. With a strong educational background and extensive training, Dr. Moore has considerable experience in early intervention partial knee replacements as well as minimally invasive surgery of the knee and hip. The type of care that he provides is reflected in the fact that he has performed more than 1,300 total joint replacements in Carteret County and has one of the busiest arthroscopic and hand surgical practices in the area. Dr. Moore provides expert “big city” medical care in a “hometown” setting, treating patients in an efficient, technically advanced, caring environment. His goal is to minimize waiting time and administrative hassles while maximizing outcomes. He is one of a handful of orthopedic surgeons in North Carolina certified in Robotic Joint Replacement and he has been appointed to the active medical staff of CarolinaEast Health Systems in New Bern. This expansion into New Bern allows the citizens of both Carteret and Craven counties a broader selection of orthopedic caregivers and the flexibility to choose their location of care. When it came time to start a practice, it wasn’t something he could do on his own. Wife Kyra is the marketing director and daughter Michelle works in the clinic during the summer and holiday breaks. She will graduate in May 2013 from UNC-Chapel Hill and is pursuing a medical degree with the hope of returning in 10 years to join her dad in practice. Although Dr. Moore is from “off,” this has been home for 25 years. Besides being a perfect location to raise their five children, it has been the perfect place to practice as well. The intimacy of practicing in a small town has allowed Dr. Moore to develop long-term relationships with his patients and their families. And the patient contact continues long after the office visit. No matter the location, the high school football field, a local restaurant or Shackleford Banks, patients come up to him and say “Hey, Dr. Moore.” In addition, he is a founding member of Soundview Rotary and chairman of the board of directors at Sound Bank, maintaining his community involvement long after the day is done.

t has been a busy few years for Stephanie and Brian Watson – a time of growth, exploration and new adventures. For more than 20 year Carolina Home & Garden, a 4.7 acre nursery on Hwy 24, has been a mainstay for gardeners along the Crystal Coast. Brian originally opened the business in 1993 with partner Jimmy Farrington. But as the men married and started families, they divided the business, with Farrington taking on the landscaping side of things and Brian and his wife Stephanie taking on the nursery. The couple began growing their own plants, concentrating on annuals and plants that add a nice splash of color to the garden. And along with the day-to-day operation of the business, the parents of three were plenty busy. Stephanie, however, had always dreamed of opening a bed & breakfast inn. She funneled that energy into the family home, creating an eclectic yet chic environment on the water’s edge for the family to enjoy. It wasn’t until the home became popular with friends and family members as a wedding site that she realized she may not be as far from her dream as she thought. DreamMakers Wedding Estates was an almost organic natural progression for the couple. If their friends and family are vying to book wedding time at their home, why not open the home to others who want to use the picturesque landscape for their special day? As their excitement grew, so did the offerings. Not only is the Watson House available for weddings and events, but the family purchased a second estate, a Greek revival plantation called Palo Alto, and have exclusive use of two additional sites, a 12,000 square foot barn for rustic weddings and the Octagon House in Cedar Point. By partnering with an events coordinator, wedding planner and caterers, the Watsons have been able to create a vibrant second business. It was Brian who said that sometimes, when you’re exploring ways to be sustainable and grow your business, really cool things happen. The children are growing, Jordan is 19, Logan is 17 and Jacob is 15, and as they graduate and go off to college, Stephanie and Brian are left with plenty of new adventures to explore.

n 1981 David and Pam Waller bought the established Gull Isle Realty in Atlantic Beach, keeping the name people had come to know and working on plans to expand the business. Originally opened by Myrtle Wertz in 1964, the business had been operated by Fred and Skip Schnibben since 1971. In 1985 David added the second floor to help manage the increase in business. Derek Waller, David’s son, joined the business in 1994 as a real estate sales agent and assisted David on the weekly and yearly rentals. In the early 2000s David sold the weekly rental business but kept the long-term rentals and in 2011 Derek assumed the long-term rental portion of the business, renaming it Gull Isle Realty Rentals. David continues to serve as the broker in charge and appraiser for Gull Isle Realty while Derek is a real estate broker and property manager for 200+ long-term rentals. David’s suggestions and opinions on real estate come from many years of dealing with clients who were selling, buying and appraising. David has kept his integrity, even in the roughest of situations, and has served as a wonderful mentor to Derek throughout the years. They are honest and knowledgeable about all aspects of the real estate business and the varying areas of the Crystal Coast. The father and son team couldn’t be happier about serving Eastern North Carolina. 611 Atlantic Beach Causeway, Atlantic Beach

All in the Family

Leslie M. Davis was tagged “Sonny Boy” by his late father, Capt. Stacy Davis, and while far from being the boy his grandfather remembers, he carries the name today. In honor of his father, Capt. Leslie “Sonny” Davis and wife Joyce tagged their first head boat, the Capt. Stacy more than 50 years ago, honoring the father who instilled his love of fishing Carteret County’s waterways. A Harkers Island native, Capt. Sonny Davis has hand built numerous head boats, charter boats and shrimp trawlers, including the latest additions to the fleet, the Capt. Stacy IV, Capt. Stacy VII and several bait boats. For more than 25 years, the Capt. Stacy vessels ran off of the Morehead City waterfront next to the Davis Fish Company. It was a natural business for Capt. Sonny to move in to. He started working with his father as a young boy – working in the fish house his father owned and as a mate on his father’s charter boat, taking his first parties out from the their family dock on Harkers Island. He earned a captain’s license and worked with his father for several years before spending time in Florida, working and earning a master’s license. It was in 1959, however, when he returned to Carteret County and opened a business of his own in Morehead City. The family had the chance to purchase a piece of property on the Atlantic Beach Causeway and relocated the business to what is now known as the Capt. Stacy Fishing Center. During its 26 years in Atlantic Beach, the site has been host to many of the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel tournaments. In addition to its two head boats, the site houses nine additional charter boat companies. The business is still completely family owned. Capt. Sonny’s eldest son, Capt. Maurice, Jr., has run the Capt. Stacy IV for more than 28 years, while youngest son, Joe Davis, works as 1st mate and grandson Leslie M. “Trey” Davis, III works as a mate. Capt. Sonny’s wife Joyce started and continues to run the gift shop while also taking reservations and daughter Loretta manages the Capt. Stacy IV, Capt. Stacy VII and the fishing center. Granddaughters Diana Davis, Laura Spickett and Makenzie Jo Davis can be found working with their nanny in the gift shop and niece Faith Davis Barbour helps make reservations. Rounding out the family tree, Loretta’s husband Don Acree is always on hand to help when needed, making for a true family business. Although Capt. Sonny no longer runs the head boat he continues to play an active role in the main operation of the business, catching and selling live bait, commercial fishing and fixing those things that need tending to. He is currently building yet another seaworthy vessel that he plans to run himself, inevitably with his constant loyal companions (his dogs) in tow. The Capt. Stacy has a long, rich fishing history in Carteret County. More than years have gone into building a reputable business and the family’s children and grandchildren are dedicated and proud to be carrying on the hard earned tradition.

For hundreds of years the names Duncan and Nelson have been synonymous with Beaufort. It is, according to John Nelson Duncan, III, owner of Beaufort Realty, a down to earth, simple place to live and raise a family with a coastal way of life that is so much more appealing than city living. Duncan and his wife Melanie live in Beaufort along with their two sons, John and Joseph, making him an ideal contact to have when it comes to learning more about the area. His perspective on the area and its amenities make Beaufort Realty a favorite when it comes to finding a new home or the perfect spot for a family vacation. Beaufort Realty opened its doors in 1988 and Duncan started as an agent in 1995. In 1998 he purchased the business that celebrated the small seaport village and added a vacation and annual rental component; sure that he could lure some vacationers to Beaufort-by-the-Sea. The business he nurtured is a true full-service real estate company that has continued to grow through the years. In the rental department, Anna Grandy and Susan Taylor are always ready to discuss options in the area and accounts manager Debbie Pease is on task when the time comes to get all the paperwork in order. Rounding out the team are long-time friends and experienced brokers, Don McCall, Robert McCall, Jeff Adams and brother-in-law Arthur Harrison, ensuring that Duncan and Beaufort Realty are ready to handle all your real estate needs – vacation or annual, residential, commercial, rentals and sales.
