Family BUSINESS Carteret County

Dedication In 2013 Carteret County and NCCOAST was saddened by the loss of one of its most prominent businesswomen, Mrs. Ginny Gordon. A leader in the business community and a staunch advocate of shopping local, Ginny believed in the power of families and the strength they bring to a community. With that in mind, we are honored to dedicate this 2014 edition of the Family Business to Ms. Ginny.

Family BUSINESS Carteret County

L

Like any rural region throughout the country, the heart and soul of the Crystal Coast can be found in the myriad of small businesses that support its residents. This is where we work and play, shop and dine, browse and dream. From boutiques to restaurants, many of these small family businesses that dot our landscape have passed through generations, maintaining their quality and superior customer service while remaining focused on the community at large. Whether they have been in business for 75 years or five, these family businesses bind our neighborhoods and small towns together, bringing all of us closer in the process.

At NCCOAST we wanted to not only showcase these businesses that we all know and love, but salute them and their families for their years of service to the region. We invite everyone to take a moment and stop in to share the same sentiment. Be sure to tell them that you saw their photo in the Family Business. The Family Business was conceptualized and developed by NCCOAST’s own Jamie Bailey with Graphic Artist Erin Pallotti and Photographer Joseph Wootton. Jamie is a graduate of ECU and has been with NCCOAST for 13 years. She lives in Morehead City with her husband, Alan, and her son, Hunter. Erin, a graduate of Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., has been with NCCOAST’s graphic design department for just a year, but has certainly left her mark. She resides in Broad Creek with her husband, John, and son, Trey. Private Photographer Joseph Wootton attended the photography program at Carteret County College and has been sharing his unique eye and talent on both the east and west coasts for the last seven years.

Nestled in the maritime forest of Pine Knoll Shores, the Atlantis Lodge has hosted vacationing families for more than 50 years. Whether they’re lounging under the shade of live oaks by the pool or relaxing on the beach under the Atlantis’ trademark yellow umbrellas, guests at the Atlantis know they’ll look forward to their next stay with this familyfriendly coastal landmark. The Atlantis was opened by Ruth Bray and her son-in-law, AC Hall in 1963 on the beautiful Crystal Coast in Pine Knoll Shores. Ruth ran the Atlantis until she retired in 1980, when AC and his wife Dot moved to the beach to run the Lodge. AC was the Raleigh city planner for 30 years, but moved to the coast to enjoy the sand, the surf and the return visits of Atlantis guests who became like family. For many guests, time at the Atlantis is a tradition. Year after year they return to this warm, pet-friendly environment. There are plenty of activities for the entire family. Guests have complimentary use of lounge chairs and umbrellas, kayaks, boogie boards and a paddle board. The “Lounge” is on the 3rd floor with a beautiful view of the ocean and offers a ping pong table, pool table and big screen TV. The swimming pool is not the typical concrete hole in the ground. There is plenty of shade from trees and a quiet waterfall above the baby pool. VERY relaxing. With a variety of room sizes including a large selection of suites and a full array of amenities, the Atlantis has become a home away from home for many guests. The family tradition continues today with Dot and AC’s daughter, Donna, now serving as general manager. Donna and her dog Cody moved to the beach in 2003 to help run the Lodge. Cody quickly put himself to work as the official greeter. He’s sure everyone comes just to see him! Donna is busy keeping everything updated with fresh ideas while preserving the character of the Atlantis. Along with her husband, Austin, and her three brothers, Rick, Barry and Tod, they plan on keeping the Atlantis in the family and thriving for many years to come.

Celebrating 50 Years

Tommy Morrow opened Atlantic Beach Surf Shop in 1964 at the age of 15, creating a landmark on Bogue Banks and the oldest surf shop in the state. In 1982 it moved to its current location and in 2007 doubled in size, expanding the lines carried to accommodate customer requests. Sons John and Chuck Morrow now handle day-to-day operations, charting the store’s course into the future. With a vast array of merchandise found under one roof, AB Surf Shop, as it is more commonly referred, has become a destination in and of itself – bringing surfers and water sport enthusiasts to Atlantic Beach to nab that hard to find item. Tommy, John and Chuck would like to thank the many loyal customers that have made the past 50 years so successful and enjoyable. They look forward to serving you for another 50 years.

Everything a Furniture Store Should Be McQueen’s Interiors, a full-service interior design store, was opened by Danny McQueen in 1973 on the Atlantic Beach Causeway, something of a one-man band. He’d sell the furnishings during the day and deliver them in the evening, growing his family business along the way. Now, boasting a 12,500 square foot showroom in the Pelletier Harbor Shops in Morehead City, the next generation, daughter Dana McQueen, is at the helm. Deeply rooted in Carteret County, the store and its staff of interior designers aim to reflect the coastal environment – be it shabby chic, transitional or traditional, a second home on the Crystal Coast or a primary residence. It’s not only a mission they take seriously, but one they look forward to providing each day. With some staff members who have been there as long as 30 years, McQueen’s consistently brings its best to the table day after day. Knowing that the most important thing in creating a perfectly designed home is a client’s happiness, the designers at McQueen’s have achieved the pinnacle of success through the satisfaction of their clientele.

Although Amos Mosquito’s is popular with folks of all ages, this family run business has foun d a niche in serving families. Adults love the relaxed atmosphere, full bar and variety of delicious menu item s. Children, however, enjoy the fun outdoorsy décor, swamp sounds in the bathrooms and the chance to crea te their own s’mores at the table. The menu is rooted in Southern cuisine, but offers some imaginative take s on classic dishes. All of the food is made from scra tch with fresh local ingredients. In February of 2009, James Cummings (Cummings and Cummings, PLLC Attorneys at Law) and Dr. Pat McLaughlin (McLaughlin Chiropractic Center) branched out from their ongoing legal and chiropractic businesses and opened their first Great Clips franchise in Morehead City. Great Clips is a national hair salon franchise that provides quality, no-appointment haircuts for adults and kids alike in over 3,500 locations across the US. In just five years, the first salon in Morehead City has now increased to 18 locations throughout Eastern North Carolina. “With Pat and I still working full time in our primary careers, the growth of the past five years forced the new business to become a total family affair. Our wives (Sydney and Maria) and our parents have been life savers,” said Mr. Cummings. “Everyone has had to step up to the plate and work countless hours to get these salons open and running smoothly. We just could not have done this without a total commitment from both families.” The formula has worked famously for these two partners and the families plan to open two additional Great Clips locations in 2014.

“we make weekends fun”

of morehead city

Sallie and Mya, personal greeters at Boats, Inc. of Morehead City, may be the first folks you see when stopping by for a visit. The Labrador retrievers take their jobs quite seriously and have been given credit for at least one sale at the family business. When not selling boats, however, they also serve well at entertaining youngsters so mom and dad can browse the inventory. The full-service dealership was opened as a family business with Margaret and Bill Davies, along with their son Chris, some 44 years ago. Wife Brenda joined Chris in 1979 making Boats, Inc. a true family affair. Specializing in ROBALO boats, the company offers an active parts and service department for Yamaha and Johnson/Evinrude E-TEC outboard motors. Yamaha and Evinrude E-TEC certified staff members are ready to help with all parts and maintenance concerns, from the boat to the trailer. Of course, they’re eager to just talk shop with boaters who need suggestions and help, too. With their laid back, no hassle sales approach, the team at Boats, Inc. is focused on getting boat enthusiasts onto the water where memories can be made. Daughter Carole Compton grew up hanging around the business and officially joined the team in April of 2006. Her husband, Matt, can also be found around the shop on busy weekends or manning boat shows. Granddaughter Carson is the official salesperson in training, the fourth generation to join the team as the family keeps its tradition alive. They have changed with the times – first opening their doors as a waterskiing dealership and later adapting to fishing and family boating as the needs of the community evolved. Through it all, the family said, they’ve paid close attention to their customer service rating and through the years have received numerous 100% CSI awards from ROBALO, most recently nabbing the coveted Most Congenial Dealer Award. The family loves being a part of Carteret County. It is a great place to call home and a great place to raise a family. After nearly 45 years in the same location, the family is now seeing the children and grandchildren of former clients as they make their first boat purchases – while their children play a game of chase with Sallie and Mya. Stop by and visit them yourself and see how they can make your weekends fun. They’ll treat you like family – it’s all they know!

El’s

252.726.3002

DRIVE-IN If trees could talk, we’re sure the grove of live oaks that shade the parking lot of El’s Drive In would have a lot of stories to tell. For more than 50 years, locals and visitors alike have met at El’s for one of their famous shrimpburgers — the taste of which is pure North Carolina coastal nostalgia. Reminiscent of days gone by, the community landmark finds that many vacationing families simply can’t leave the area until they’ve satisfied their craving for an El’s burger. And that is music to the ears of the deeply-rooted Franks family, which simply strives to provide the best possible meal at the most reasonable price. Elvin Franks (1929-2003) began his restaurant career working with the late Dom Femia at Dom’s Lunch and later joined together to open DomL’s on the Atlantic Beach Causeway. In the early 1950s, he and wife Helen (1933-) a Morehead City native from the Promise Land now residing in Harborview on the Morehead City waterfront, opened their own restaurant where Cox Family Restaurant is located today. They operated there for five years before building at the present Arendell Street location in 1959 — opening what has become a must-stop for many Crystal Coast visitors. It has been a family affair ever since. The couple’s only son, Mark, has worked there for as long as he can remember. After serving in the US Army, he returned to the family business full-time in 1974. The third generation, grandson Shelton, is now taking hold of the reins and working full time like his father and grandparents. Granddaughter, Jenna, has worked behind the counter and as a server as needed while pursuing a degree in music education. Daughter-in-law Gail handles the bookkeeping and serves as the human resources officer, but she has even filled in as a car hop when needed. Likewise, the third generation of customers continues to flock to El’s for its fresh ingredients. There is no frozen beef here — each and every fresh burger is made by hand daily, just like their famous coleslaw, which is still made with the same family recipe as it was made with in 1959. Not much has changed at El’s since those early days. The staff still comes to your car to take your order and delivers it as soon as it is ready. The Franks couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. Nor could they imagine doing it anywhere else. For these business owners, there is no place like Carteret County and Morehead City, and no people like those found here along the Crystal Coast. The family is thankful for the local and visiting families that continue, generation after generation, to visit their family business and are eternally grateful that El’s continues to thrive and continues to serve the community they love.

Since 1982, Ginny Gordon’s has been providing everything customers need for their kitchens. The store was originally located in Beaufort, the dream of a woman who long knew that the kitchen is indeed the heart of the home. Ginny Gordon, who passed away in 2013, was joined every step of the way by her daughter, Jenny Morrison. Together, the pair relocated the store to its current spot in downtown Morehead City in 1996, providing a nice, central location for the growing business. An independent, family-owned business, Ginny Gordon’s stocks top items from a variety of vendors, many of which are small, family-owned companies as well. With its casual environment and eclectic assortment of ‘must have’ items, the store has developed a loyal customer base from around the county and across the globe. 4218-M Arendell St., Morehead City 252-808-3100 www.mooresportsmed.com Dr. Jeffrey Moore has practiced in Carteret County since 1988. A graduate of Duke University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Moore opened Moore Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in 2010, specializing in primary, complex and revision total joint replacements, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee, and surgery of the hand. With a strong educational background and extensive training, Dr. Moore has considerable experience in early intervention partial knee replacements as well as minimally invasive surgery of the knee and hip. The type of care that he provides is reflected in the fact that he has performed more than 1,600 total joint replacements in Carteret County and has one of the busiest arthroscopic and hand surgical practices in the area. Dr. Moore provides expert “big city” medical care in a “hometown” setting, treating patients in an efficient, technically advanced, caring environment. His goal is to minimize waiting time and administrative hassles while maximizing outcomes. He is one of a handful of orthopedic surgeons in North Carolina certified for the Robotic Joint Replacement and he has been appointed to the active medical staff of CarolinaEast Health Systems in New Bern. This expansion into New Bern allows the citizens of both Carteret and Craven counties a broader selection of orthopedic caregivers and the flexibility to choose their location of care. Dr. Moore was also appointed by the Governor to sit on the North Carolina Health Coordination Council, where he helps the state with planning for growth in medical resources and facilities. The Morehead City office recently moved into an expansive new facility including the entire third floor of the newest East Coast Square building. Dr. Moore and his wife, Kyra, starting this journey together over 33 years ago. The journey began when Dr. Moore was in medical school at University of Maryland in Baltimore, then took them to Pennsylvania for 5 years during his residency at Geinsinger Medical Center, and finally settling in Morehead City to begin private practice. Although Dr. Moore is from “off,” this has been home for 25 years. Besides being a perfect location to raise their five children (and hopefully now grandchildren), it has been the perfect place to practice as well. The intimacy of practicing in a small town has allowed Dr. Moore to develop long-term relationships with his patients and their families. And the patient contact continues long after the office visit. No matter the location, the high school football field, a local restaurant or Shackleford Banks, patients come up to him and say “Hey, Dr. Moore.”

Growing up in Newport, Iva Fearing loved calling Carteret County home. Opening some type of business in Carteret County had always been a personal goal, but after searching for the perfect pair of shoes and having to travel to Raleigh, New Bern and Wilmington to shoe shop she quickly realized what that store needed to be. With husband Tat, she began researching and, of course, shopping other shoes stores which, she admits, was terribly hard work. In a short 8 months, her once dream became a reality. Her mother’s friends got quite the kick out of the fact that she was opening a shoe store since she hated wearing shoes as a child and much preferred going barefoot. Iva does, however, have a love for shoes, even though she still loves to be barefoot to this day, spending as much time with sand between her toes as possible. Since opening in 1999, much as changed. Tassels has gone from being just a shoe store to a full-service ladies boutique. The goal is to fit their customers’ fashion needs and their lifestyle. And to provide the best customer shopping experience possible. The Fearings opened a second location on Atlantic Beach in July of 2013 and are planning on making Atlantic Beach their second home so to speak. In December of 2013 the Morehead City store moved from its location of almost 15 years to a new spot in the Pelletier Harbor Shops, just three doors down. Although the move brings mixed emotions, the staff at Tassels is excited for the new opportunities the move and expansion bring. The Fearings love owning a small family business and being part of a small, yet growing, community.

The Kingery and Botta families joined forces to open the Ruddy Duck Tavern in June of 2008. Bill Kingery and Fabian Botta brought more than 35 years of experience in the restaurant business, although both have diverse backgrounds, making a perfect balance that is reflected at the Ruddy Duck Tavern. The restaurant features a complete menu, from appetizers, soups, salads, hamburgers and sandwiches to sophisticated entrees and everything in between in addition to a blackboard full of daily specials, making Ruddy Duck’s a preferred destination in Carteret County The men and their wives, Susan Kingery and Silvana Botta, focus on providing great quality food and generous portions at a reasonable price while supporting other local businesses in the process. The recent winner of a People’s Choice Award at the NC Seafood Festival has found its home on the Morehead City waterfront and locals and visitors are certainly glad they did.

If you’ve picked up a magazine in Carteret County, you’ve seen Joseph Wootton’s work. From fashion photography for local boutiques to the covers of NCCOAST’s Crystal Magazine, Wootton has been sharing his talent with the community for the last seven years. With a laid back, comfortable approach, Wootton has the ability to put his subjects at ease, allowing them to express themselves honestly. The translation is a natural, unhindered portrait that seamlessly captures the subject’s personality. While portraiture, editorial and food photography are high on his list, Wootton is no stranger to fine art photography, finding beauty in the obscure and bringing life to the inanimate. The North Carolina native moved frequently in his youth, although the coast played a large role in his upbringing. As an adult, that wanderlust continued, with Wootton recently spending a year working on the west coast before returning to Eastern North Carolina. That glimpse of life in other regions has given the photographer a wide range of experience at a young age and helped develop his love of natural light, giving his photographs a realistic, raw, honest feel that fits perfectly with Carteret County’s landscape. His knowledge of the area provides great insight into the area’s hidden spots just waiting to provide the perfect backdrop for a photo shoot. And his natural ability and keen eye make Wootton a standout in today’s contemporary photography market.
