Family BUSINESS Carteret County Buy Local With our ever-changing economy it has never been more important that we as a community support our local businesses – many of which in Carteret County have been in business for generations. These anchor businesses, both large and small, are the backbone of daily life – they build our homes and provide residential services, they help us choose our attire and give our hair a trim to keep us looking great, they provide our medical care and make sure our children grow into adult hood with the perfectly straight smile we had hoped for. Our visits to these local companies not only show our support of our friends and neighbors, it also impacts our community. Studies show that more than 45% of each dollar spent at a local business is circulated back into the community. NCCOAST is proud of be a part of this rural business community. For more than 30 years our local staff has provided publications for our residents and visitors as well as commercial print services to the businesses that dot our landscape. As we begin a new year in Carteret County, we’re excited to spotlight our family-owned businesses. We invite everyone to take a moment to visit these companies and share the importance of investing in our own community. Be sure to tell them you saw their photo in the Family Business.

Everything a Furniture Store Should Be
McQueen’s Interiors, a full-service interior design store, was opened by Danny McQueen in 1973 on the Atlantic Beach Causeway, something of a one-man band. He’d sell the furnishings during the day and deliver them in the evening, growing his family business along the way. Now, boasting a 12,500 square foot showroom in the Pelletier Harbor Shops in Morehead City, the next generation, daughter Dana McQueen, is at the helm. Deeply rooted in Carteret County, the store and its staff of interior designers aim to reflect the coastal environment – be it shabby chic, transitional or traditional, a second home on the Crystal Coast or a primary residence. It’s not only a mission they take seriously, but one they look forward to providing each day. With some staff members who have been there as long as 30 years, McQueen’s consistently brings its best to the table day after day. Knowing that the most important thing in creating a perfectly designed home is a client’s happiness, the designers at McQueen’s have achieved the pinnacle of success through the satisfaction of their clientele.

An independent, family-owned business, Ginny Gordon’s stocks top items from a variety of vendors, many of which are small, family-owned companies as well. With its casual environment and eclectic assortment of ‘must have’ items, the store has developed a loyal customer base from around the county and across the globe. It’s all about Relationships
1957 Parker FORD Location
When it comes to doing business in a rural community a lot can be decided with a handshake. Business in Eastern North Carolina is built upon relationships. It’s about taking care of neighbors and knowing that one day they may be taking care of you. And it’s about people – both young and old – who are willing to stand behind the products they sell. That’s the philosophy with which Dick Parker opened his first used car lot in Morehead City in 1947; the same tenets with which his children, sons Randall and Richard and daughter Beth carry on his legacy today. For 68 years the Parker family has been synonymous with automobiles in Carteret County – whether it was that first used car lot or Parker Honda and Parker Buick/GMC which we recognize today. Building relationships through the years, the Parkers have stood the test of time becoming a true part of Morehead City’s history and heritage. In 1980, Dick Parker opened Parkway Shopping Center, which is home to K-Mart. Winn-Dixie and a variety of smaller shops joined later. The site, now owned by Beth Parker Henry, is managed by her husband Keith. While building relationships with clients is vital, the Parkers have also developed strong relationships with their staff, maintaining key personnel to help enrich the buyer experience. With a handful of 25-30 year employees and an array of 15-20 year employees, the family is proving that relationships are a vital thread in the fabric of business. That legacy continues with Randall’s children. Son Brian, a NC State grad, is the general manager at Parker Buick/GMC and Hugh, a recent economics graduate from ECU, is transitioning into life at Parker Honda. Daughter Lindsay lives and works in Beaufort, but she reserves some time to draft ads for the family business and shine a spotlight on the dealership with television spots, making her part of the much needed support staff along with mom, Sylvia. “It’s a great opportunity to have that extra special relationship,” said Randall. “It does bring challenges, sure, but the opportunities far outweigh them. We have a unique relationship. We’ve been able to extend the father/son experience to our professional life and that is very rare today, and it’s very satisfying.” So is the shopping experience with the Parker family and its pair of multi-award winning dealerships. Parker Honda has been awarded numerous Honda President’s Awards while Parker Buick/GMC is a repeat winner of the GM Mark of Excellence award. The two showrooms represent both domestic and import vehicles, providing a diverse collection of cars, trucks and SUVs to choose from, whether you’re a first time buyer or a seasoned driver. And the Parkers are always ready to show customers a few of their favorites and begin building new relationships with the generation ahead.

Supporting local fishermen since 1938
3UPPORT
#ELEBRATING 9EARS In February of 2013 the Sanitary Fish Market & Restaurant reached a milestone rarely met by eateries – it celebrated 75 years of business on the Morehead City waterfront. The walls of restaurant are lined with memorabilia, making it something of a timeline, tracing the steps of the family business through generations. In the middle of the walls, almost lost in the hundreds of pieces that crowd them, are photographs of the late Capt. “Tony” Seamon and Capt. Ted Garner, who partnered in 1938 to open the counter diner with a dozen stools. Seamon, who worked in construction, and Garner, who was originally a barber, began taking parties out on the Monnie M. for a little coastal fishing. Hotels were limited so fishermen often spent the night on the boat, and since many of the patrons weren’t familiar with the cleaning and cooking of the fresh catch, Seamon would cook the fish while afloat. At the urging of customers, the pair set up a couple of kerosene burners and a counter close to the dock, making it easier for folks to enjoy the seafood without having to take a fishing trip. It was an instant hit – lines formed the first day they opened and haven’t stopped yet. Families returned year after year to the ever-growing building nestled over the water, making it a tradition of their annual vacation. And celebrities, both local and national, would swing by for a taste of the seafood everyone was raving about. Some newcomers simply don’t understand the fuss, while others, who have long established roots to Carteret County and subscribe to the relaxed, traditional way of life that the region has become famous for, will quickly say that many a beach memory has been made under the Sanitary’s roof. From matchmaking and weddings to providing a first job for thousands of the area’s teenagers, the Sanitary has a foothold in Carteret County that runs as deep as the oceans that sustain it. The Garner and Seamon partnership lasted until Garner’s death in 1978. Ted Garner, Jr. purchased the restaurant outright in 1979 and while he still oversees the restaurant, the day-to-day operation is left to son Jeff and daughter Lisa. Recognizing an everchanging market and current trends, Jeff hired a new chef to take the restaurant to the next level. Chef James Scott and Garner teamed up to expand its offerings to include signature dishes, daily soup and sandwiches, pasta creations and fantastic new salads. Their latest endeavor is to delve into catering. The one thing customers expect is consistency, said Garner, and that means serving the highest quality of seafood available. “We get fresh what we can when it’s in season,” he said. “We’re proud that we’ve been able to support our local fishing industry for 75 years.” And now, with 77 years under its belt, it’s safe to say the Sanitary will continue to draw customers for as long as there is seafood to serve. “Not only are we the third generation of owners, but we’re welcoming fourth and fifth generations of customers,” said Garner. “People come back year after year. People come because their grandparents ate here. It’s not just a family tradition for us, it’s a tradition for generations of repeat customers.”

El’s
252.726.3002
DRIVE-IN If trees could talk, we’re sure the grove of live oaks that shade the parking lot of El’s Drive In would have a lot of stories to tell. For more than 50 years, locals and visitors alike have met at El’s for one of their famous shrimpburgers – the taste of which is pure North Carolina coastal nostalgia. Reminiscent of days gone by, the community landmark finds that many vacationing families simply can’t leave the area until they’ve satisfied their craving for an El’s burger. And that is music to the ears of the deeply-rooted Franks family, which simply strives to provide the best possible meal at the most reasonable price. Elvin Franks (1929-2003) began his restaurant career working with the late Dom Femia at Dom’s Lunch and later joined together to open DomL’s on the Atlantic Beach Causeway. In the early 1950s, he and wife Helen (1933-) a Morehead City native from the Promise Land now residing in Harborview on the Morehead City waterfront, opened their own restaurant where Cox Family Restaurant is located today. They operated there for five years before building at the present Arendell Street location in 1959 – opening what has become a must-stop for many Crystal Coast visitors. It has been a family affair ever since. The couple’s only son, Mark, has worked there for as long as he can remember. After serving in the US Army, he returned to the family business full-time in 1974. The third generation, grandson Shelton, is now taking hold of the reins and working full time like his father and grandparents. Daughter-in-law Gail handles the bookkeeping and serves as the human resources officer, but she has even filled in as a car hop when needed. Granddaughter Jenna, now a college grad, fills in when she’s not too busy directing band students at Smyrna and Atlantic schools. Likewise, the third generation of customers continues to flock to El’s for its fresh ingredients. There is no frozen beef here – each and every fresh burger is made by hand daily, just like their famous coleslaw, which is still made with the same family recipe as it was made with in 1959. Not much has changed at El’s since those early days. The staff still comes to your car to take your order and delivers it as soon as it is ready. The Franks couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. Nor could they imagine doing it anywhere else. For these business owners, there is no place like Carteret County and Morehead City, and no people like those found here along the Crystal Coast. The family is thankful for the local and visiting families that continue, generation after generation, to visit their family business and are eternally grateful that El’s continues to thrive and continues to serve the community they love.

Nestled in the maritime forest of Pine Knoll Shores, the Atlantis Lodge has hosted vacationing families for more than 50 years. Whether they’re lounging under the shade of live oaks by the pool or relaxing in the beach under the Atlantis’ trademark yellow umbrellas, guests at the Atlantis know they’ll look forward to their next stay with this familyfriendly coastal landmark. The Atlantis Lodge was opened by Ruth Bray and her son-in-law, AC Hall, in 1963 on the beautiful Crystal Coast. Ruth ran the Atlantis until she retired in 1980, When AC and his wife Dot moved to the beach to take over. AC was the Raleigh city planner for 30 years, but moved to the coast to enjoy the sand, the surf and the return visits of Atlantis guests who became like family. For many guests, time at the Atlantis Lodge is a tradition. Year after year they return to this warm, pet-friendly environment of the Atlantis Lodge. There are plenty of activities for the entire family. Guests have complimentary use of lounge chairs and umbrellas, two bicycles, kayaks and boogie boards. The “Lounge” is on the third floor with a beautiful view of the ocean and offers a ping pong table, pool table and big screen TV. The swimming pool is not the typical concrete hole in the ground. There is plenty of shade from trees and a quiet waterfall above the baby pool. VERY relaxing. With a variety of room sizes, including a large selection of suites with kitchens, and a full array of amenities, the Atlantis Lodge has become a home away from home for many visitors. The family tradition continues today, with Dot and AC’s daughter, Donna, now serving as general manager of the beach-front resort. Donna and her dog Cody moved to the beach in 2003 to help run the lodge. Cody quickly put himself to work as the official greeter. Two additional doggie greeters joined the team this year, Bodie and Bingo. They make sure everyone feels welcome! Donna is busy keeping everything updated with fresh ideas while preserving the character of the Atlantis. Along with her husband, Austin, and her three brothers, Rick, Barry and Tod, they plan on keeping the Atlantis in the family and thriving for many years to come.
or hundreds of years the names Duncan and Nelson have been synonymous with Beaufort. It is, according to John Nelson Duncan, III, owner of Beaufort Realty, a down to earth, simple place to live and raise a family with a coastal way of life that is so much more appealing than city living. Duncan and his wife Melanie live in Beaufort along with their two sons, John and Joseph, making him an ideal contact to have when it comes to learning more about the area. His perspective on the area and its amenities make Beaufort Realty a favorite when it comes to finding a new home or the perfect spot for a family vacation. Beaufort Realty opened its doors in 1988 and Duncan started as an agent in 1995. In 1998 he purchased the business that celebrated the small seaport village and added a vacation and annual rental component; sure that he could lure some vacationers to Beaufort-by-the-Sea. The business he nurtured is a true full-service real estate company that has continued to grow through the years. In the rental department, Anna Grandy and Susan Taylor are always ready to discuss options in the area and accounts manager Debbie Pease is on task when the time comes to get all the paperwork in order. Rounding out the team are long-time friends and experienced brokers, Don McCall, Robert McCall, Jeff Adams and brother-in-law Arthur Harrison, ensuring that Duncan and Beaufort Realty are ready to handle all your real estate needs – vacation or annual, residential, commercial, rentals and sales.

Dr. Jeffrey Moore has practiced in Carteret County since 1988. A graduate of Duke University and the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, Dr. Moore and his wife Kyra started this journey together over 34 years ago, finally settling in Morehead City to begin private practice and raise their family. Dr. Moore opened Moore Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in 2010 with the desire of providing “big city” medical care in a “small town” setting, treating patients in an efficient, technically advanced and caring environment. Their goal is to minimize wait time and administrative hassles while maximizing outcomes. Along with a solid base in general orthopedics covering a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions, MOSM offers expertise in sports medicine, joint replacement, hand surgery and fracture care. Outcomes are optimized by conservative, and if ultimately necessary, surgical treatment options. Patient education is central, which means each individual patient can make educated decisions regarding their care. The comprehensive approach continues after surgery at Moore Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation, which provides the highest quality, result-focused physical therapy and rehabilitation program available in the area. Over the last five years, MOSM has added staff, physicians and a second location in Cedar Point. No matter the location, or physician, Dr. Jeffrey Moore, Dr. David Kirby, Dr. John Spellman or PA Chuck Pfaff, MOSM continues to provide “big city” care in our “small town” setting. Although Dr. Moore is from “off,” this has been home for 26 years. Besides being a perfect location to raise their five children, it has been the perfect place to practice as well. The intimacy of practicing in a small town has allowed Dr. Moore to develop longterm relationships with his patients and their families. And the patient contact continues long after the office visit. Next time you see him, be sure to ask him about his new title, Grandpa!

Growing up in Newport, Iva Fearing loved calling Carteret County home. Opening some type of business in Carteret County had always been a personal goal, but after searching for the perfect pair of shoes and having to travel to Raleigh, New Bern and Wilmington to shoe shop she quickly realized what that store needed to be. With husband Tat, she began researching and, of course, shopping other shoes stores which, she admits, was terribly hard work. In a short 8 months, her once dream became a reality. Her mother’s friends got quite the kick out of the fact that she was opening a shoe store since she hated wearing shoes as a child and much preferred going barefoot. Iva does, however, have a love for shoes, even though she still loves to be barefoot to this day, spending as much time with sand between her toes as possible. Since opening in 1999, much has changed. Tassels has gone from being just a shoe store to a full-service ladies boutique. Iva’s goal is to set Tassels apart from other boutiques and online vendors. She states, “The way I do this is to offer amazing customer service before, during and after the sale here inside our brick and mortar store. We are blessed with amazing repeat customers that shop with us month after month, year after year. With price points for every budget, it is our job at Tassels to find the perfect fit for our customers and their lifestyle and we take pride in doing so. We build wardrobes for our customers with key pieces that they can mix and match for years to come. We make shopping fun.” Iva loves owning a small family business and being part of a small, yet growing, community.

Now Hair This
Perfectly placed highlights, precision haircuts and beautiful blowouts have put Bella Hair Studio and owner Audra Smith-Odum in the sights of many Carteret County women. And rightly so. With more than 20 years of experience, Audra, along with her dedicated staff, is creative, innovative and on top of current trends and styles. The Atlantic native started her career with Head Hunters, Atlantic Beach, before opening her own salon in 2004. She purchased her current location in August 2014, further illustrating her commitment to the Carteret County business community. She undertook a complete remodel of the site, with husband Corky by her side every step of the way. The result is a soothing, spa-like setting that makes everyone feel at ease and the perfect location to do great hair for many years to come. Much of her success, Audra said, is due to her fiercely loyal client base. As her business has grown, so has her connection to the community, broadening old relationships and creating new ones as she goes. That may be why Audra was recognized as the 2014 Crystal Coast Business Woman of the Year. Providing the best possible customer service to her clients, both old and new, is a top priority at Bella Hair Studio. Of course, it’s the great hair that keeps clients coming back time and time again!

Second Generation of Entrepreneurs One of the most rewarding parts of living and doing business in a small town is watching the next generation carve their path. It’s no secret that in a small town everyone knows everyone. Perhaps we did business with their parents or know them in passing from church or a civic group. Whatever the connection, we quietly celebrate their children’s milestones. We see them on the softball field, we notice their graduation photos in the local newspaper and we smile when we hear word of marriages and births. But nothing makes us celebrate as much as seeing them succeed in business, just like their parents had before them. It’s hard to lead with a little name dropping, but in this situation, we just can’t help it. Booth Parker’s parents started Stevenson Automotive Group; Wood’s parents founded Parker Marine. Together, the couple is an unstoppable force, determined to leave their indelible mark on Eastern North Carolina’s business community. A certified public accountant by trade, Booth earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s degree in accounting from NC State University – skills she keeps fresh a few days a week at Stevenson Automotive. Sewing started as a hobby in 2007 with dog collars and beds, slowly evolving into the well-received clothing line, Haley & the Hound. The colorful coastal inspired clothing, all made in North Carolina, was an instant hit – the epitome of our laid back Crystal Coast lifestyle. Sales took off with the opening of a storefront on the Morehead City waterfront in July 2012 and Booth extended her offerings to include women’s tunics. By fall 2014, the popularity of the Haley & the Hound label allowed Booth to close the store and focus primarily on wholesale distribution. Now carried by more than 75 retailers, the comfy machine-washable beach designed apparel line continues to grow in popularity. Locally, it can be found at Island Proper and Tassels. Behind the scenes through it all has been Wood, helping with inventory and heavy lifting and giving a man’s perspective on new styles. Son, Wood Parker V, however, lends his talents to building box forts each week after new shipments arrive. For many couples, that would be the end of the story. But we can’t forget that Booth is married to Wood Parker, son to one of the most industrious boat building families in Eastern North Carolina. So how is Wood leaving his mark on the business world? With boats, of course. You could say it’s in his blood – the drive to create vessels that perfectly navigate our coastal waterways. Others may say it is all he knows. Wood was reared in the boathouse alongside his father, watching and later helping as the staff assembled wooden and fiberglass boats. He cut his teeth in the tooling department at Parker Marine after graduating from NC State University with a degree in business management. Those years instilled in him a love for custom vessels and that undeniable Carolina Flare. So much so that in 2010 he set out on his own, opening Cinco Boatworks in a small shop on Core Sound in Atlantic. In 2013, the business moved to a new facility on Bogue Sound in Newport, providing additional space for the growing company. The focus remains constant – boats built to customers’ specifications with Wood involved every step of the way. Partner in life and business, Booth handles the accounting for Cinco Boatworks and is always willing to offer ideas and opinions. The youngest Parker, however, watches closely as dad works, learning the trade as his father had done years before – in hopes of keeping the tradition alive. Who would have thought that a chance meeting at NC State would bring these two second generation business owners back to Carteret County as contributing members of the region’s business community, supporting each other every step of the way. All we do know, is that we’re so glad it did.

“Satisfied Customers Make Our B
Business”
It was in the 1960s when Clegg’s Termite & Pest Control began – almost by accident. The Rev. Ralph E. Clegg was a minister at a small church in a rural North Carolina town. The church developed a termite problem. Several companies gave Rev. Clegg estimates for controlling the problem, but the cost was prohibitive for the small congregation. Rev. Clegg decided to learn all he could about termites from a friend at NC State University and books on the subject, hoping to treat the church himself. It was a successful adventure. But the treatment performed at the small church was just the beginning. Soon church members who were also in need of termite control were having Rev. Clegg treat their homes. So many so that in 1964 Rev. Clegg incorporated Clegg’s Termite and Pest Control. The company’s beginning was limited to performing termite treatments, however, due to requests and needs, these services expanded to also perform pest control services. The company was developing from a hobby with a few employees working out of Rev. Clegg’s home. In 1970, Rev. Clegg’s son, Phil Clegg, joined the firm after working as a pilot with the NC Forest Service in their aerial fire patrol. A NC State University graduate with a major in forestry, Phil now uses his love of flying to regularly visit the branches throughout the company’s service territory. In July of 1982, Clegg’s opened its first location outside of the Durham office, in Morehead City. Rev. Clegg moved to Morehead to supervise the operation until it got off the ground. Currently, the Clegg’s family includes 13 branches, including the home office in Durham. Phil’s son, Philip, now holds the vice president position and will soon take over the president role. He made his start with Clegg’s at an early age, joining his grandfather and father in the field as he worked his way up. Phil has served as president of the NC Pest Control Association and National Pest Control Association and currently serves on the NC Structural Pest Control Committee. Even after retirement, Rev. Clegg continued to play a major role in the growth and expansion of the company. Father and son working together made Clegg’s Termite and Pest Control what it is today. A family business, helping families throughout the region every day. At Clegg’s, employees are treated like part of the family and customers are treated how the owners would want to be treated themselves – with respect and courteousness. With a focus on individually-tailored service and a wealth of loyal, knowledgeable employees, Clegg’s is proud to be a part of the Carteret County community. The family appreciates both the beauty and the hometown charm that Morehead City provides – noting that it is a beautiful place to work and play. It’s also a pretty great place to fish, adds Phil!

Dr. Robert Sanborn, III, takes care of all things smile related! His orthodontic training and experience allow him to create beautiful smiles while his natural love of children and teenagers shows through in each and every visit. Working by his side as business manager is wife Lori Beth. With a background in business and sales, Lori Beth handles the details and paperwork so Dr. Rob can focus on his work, ensuring that each and every patient receives the best care possible. It’s a win-win for the patients, team and their family. The couple opened the doors to Sanborn Orthodontics five years ago. Dr. Rob was fresh out of residency and with two young children (then 3 and 1) and they knew they wanted to find the best environment possible in which to raise them. After extensive research, the couple knew the only place they wanted to establish a practice was Carteret County. Lori Beth, a Carteret County native, was glad to return to her roots. What has delighted them the most is how their new business was embraced by the community. Word quickly spread. Patients told their neighbors, their softball team, surfing friends and family members. And the practice blossomed. The biggest compliment, Lori Beth said, is to see parents bringing in a second and third child. To the staff at Sanborn, that means they were more than satisfied with the service and care that was provided with the first child. And there is no greater feeling than knowing you have pleased your clients. Of course, it’s always nice to see the fruits of your labor in the smiling faces of children around town, too. Sanborn Orthodontics strives to return the favor. Whether it is sponsoring a children’s athletics team, dance recital or road race, the Sanborn’s feel passionate about supporting their patients’ endeavors, encouraging them both in the office and out in the world. The Smiles for a Lifetime Foundation is an outcropping of their mission to give back. Dr. Sanborn, with the help of a board of directors, gives up to 12 orthodontic scholarships to deserving children each year. Serving the community that embraced their practice is always a priority. With a focus on the entire patient experience and ensuring that families are well informed and cared for, Sanborn Orthodontics looks forward to years of service in Carteret County.
The Only Locally Owned Parts Store in Carteret County
Part by Part Since the mid-1960s, folks in Carteret County and the surrounding area have looked to brothers Roy and Walter Kittrell for their auto parts needs. Like most things in rural communities, it started innocently enough. Seeing a need in the area, Roy and Walter joined Sam Griffin and Thurman Bailey in 1964 and started selling parts out of the back of a pick-up truck. It was so successful that by March 12, they opened their first store front at 1103 Evans St., ordering weekly from a buyer’s guide and using a manual card system to maintain their stock. Business expanded in 1965 and by 1966 the men added a machine shop. Roy and Walter purchased Mr. Griffin’s and Mr. Bailey’s shares in the company in 1975 and began expanding their growing business. The Beaufort location opened in 1976 and the Morehead City store moved into its newly-constructed home in 1978. They purchased stores in New Bern, Jacksonville and Lumberton, that were later sold, and opened a branch in Havelock in 1980. In 2004, the brothers partnered with CarQuest, the Beaufort store expanded and the Havelock location moved into its current home. Through it all, the Kittrell children, Jeanne, Buddy, Robert and Gray have all taken part in the family business. Roy’s grandchildren, Wesley and Sarah are continuing the family tradition. Sarah is working alongside her father Buddy in the Morehead City store while Wesley, Buddy’s son, is working in the Beaufort location. In 2008, Buddy Kittrell became coowner of the Cape Carteret branch with partner Chuck Hudson, further cementing the family’s commitment to serving the entire region. Kittrell CarQuest holds itself to a higher standard, ensuring that customers receive great products, quality parts and outstanding prices while maintaining the high level of personalized customer service that can only be found at a small, family-run business.

xperienced and Successful in Buying and Selling Property on the Crystal Coast...
Realtor Pam Bird has been expertly assisting buyers and sellers in acquiring coastal property since 1998. Because of her own experience living waterfront and raising a family on Pelletier Creek, just off Bogue Sound in Morehead City, she understands the unique attraction to our Crystal Coast. Pam Bird and her three children, Kristen, and twins Ryan and John, can talk firsthand about the joys and the blessings of the coastal lifestyle and all that it involves … backyard cookouts with family and friends, boating, kayaking, crab pots off the dock and much, much more. And so, because she understands, real estate is a natural for Pam Bird. She sees the powerful yet familiar pull her clients feel toward our area. So many of her clients came here as small children, and now they bring their children, and our coastal tradition continues. Other clients come just to visit and vacation, and they find themselves “at home” here. Some come to make the coast a permanent home, or they may already live here and they benefit from her ability to match buyers with exactly what they want, while keeping the process easy and comfortable. “What’s so special about our coastal area is that it has such rich family traditions,” she said. “Many of my clients have memories of coming to the beach here as children, so they want to make memories for their children. It just continues. “I think there are two words that speak of our area; powerful and familiar. Once you get here and get out of the car, it just feels right.” So give Pam Bird a call or send an email to find “your very own special place at the coast.”

Clyde Leslie Smith, known as “Les” to friends and colleagues, grew up surrounded by insects. His father, Dr. Clyde F. Smith was the head of the Department of Entomology at NC State University and was a well known researcher and insect specialist with a special interest in aphids. Les graduated from NC State and began working as a technical service director for other large pest control companies. Disappointed by the large corporate attitude and “profit before people” structure he found there, he decided to start his own company that provided an affordable service with more value than higher priced competitors. In 1972, Les opened Rid A Pest, Inc. Operating from the garage in his back yard, he started with zero customers and luckily, plenty of enthusiasm. He still remembers his first customers ... the Bottoms family. They trusted him to service their home and soon began referring friends and family. Word of mouth from satisfied customers continues to be the best source of new and repeat business for the company. Les and his wife Lynda have five children; most of whom have been involved in the business at some
point in their lives. Two of their sons, Jamie and Lee, purchased the business in 2013, which now operates from offices in Morehead City and Wilson and provides service to thousands of customers throughout Eastern North Carolina. “We look at each day as an opportunity to be better and to do everything we can to continue to promote the service and vision of our Dad, to provide outstanding service at an outstanding price, with only the best employees,” said Jamie Smith. “For the past 42 years that vision has worked and we look forward to the next 42 years here in Carteret County and Eastern North Carolina.” Lee, his wife Callie and their two daughters live in Morehead City. A graduate of both the Department of Entomology and CALS at NC State University, he manages the Morehead City location and serves as the on-staff entomologist. He is currently vice president of the NC Pest Management Association and has served on the board of directors for over 7 years. Lee claims that he is the luckiest family member since he and his wife get to work and live on the Crystal Coast year round. Callie teaches first grade at Bogue Sound Elementary and was chosen as the Regional Teacher of the Year in 2011. Jamie and his wife Allyson have a son and daughter and live in Wilson. Jamie attended NC State and NC Wesleyan University, studying both entomology and criminal justice. In addition to his full time work as president of Rid A Pest, he also is a sworn reserve deputy with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Dept. Jamie is actively involved in the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, Homebuilders Association and volunteers for many activities with his church and other organizations. Allyson is a teacher and works with Wilson County Schools as a Reading Instruction Teaching Support Specialist and has been chosen as Teacher of the Year at her school. “We want folks in Carteret County and Eastern North Carolina to know that we are company they can trust to provide nothing but fantastic service to control bothersome pests. One of the most rewarding things to me, is that when our family is out to dinner, or I’m at the gas station, or some other local event and customers come up to me and tell me how happy they are with the service from our company or with the technician that services their home. It really makes being a local, family owned business worth it. It makes the long hours, the dedication, the mistakes and the remedies worth the investment ... to know that we are a part of a great community and have the best customers there are right here in Carteret County and Eastern North Carolina,” said Lee. Rid A Pest, Inc. employs roughly 20 team members from Carteret County and about 30 from Wilson County. In 2012, the company won the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce’s Outrageous Customer Service Award and was honored as the Wilson Chamber of Commerce Member of the Month in November 2014. The company is consistently listed as the top ranking company for customer service on both Angie’s List and Google+ and has maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau since its inception. Rid A Pest is an active member of the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce, Carteret County Homebuilders Association, NC Pest Management Association, National Pest Management Association, PestOne Association, and frequently donates service for Habitat for Humanity and other worthy causes in the community. Carteret County is a tight-knit area. Everyone knows everyone, or knows someone who does! What that means, is that news travels fast. Rid A Pest likes that. It means that when they do a great job and have a great price or an excellent reputation, everyone in this area knows about it. It also keeps them focused on making customers happy and doing a job they can be proud of and that will honor their family and the company’s reputation as The Most Trusted Name in Pest Control. “We feel blessed to be part of our family, such a great company, and to work with the people we do, where we do. The fact that our father started this company from scratch and that our grandfather was so involved in the pest management industry gives us a lot of family history and is really the reason this business and this community mean so much to us ... it really is our family.”
