Former CIA Spy Lectures IT’S ALWAYS ADVANTAGEOUS to find out what our adversaries are up to, whether we’re at war or trying to keep the peace. Carteret area residents and visitors will have a unique opportunity to hear, in person, one of the great intelligence stories of our times straight from the lips of a cutting-edge former CIA officer, Martha “Marti” D. Peterson. The Carteret Arts Forum presents a lecture by Peterson based on her memoir, “The Widow Spy,” in which she describes a journey from steamy Laos as a young bride, to suburban Langley Air Force Base as a CIA case officer, to frozen Moscow and back. Learn from Peterson about the tragic American failure in South East Asia and the notat-all surprising collapse of the Soviet Union from a boots-on-the ground perspective. Learn how she got a job as a case officer, not a secretary, and what it took to be taken seriously by male co-workers and a male command structure. The lecture will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, Jan. 29 at The History Place in Morehead City. A question and answer session will follow. Tickets are $35 and can be at www.carteretartsforum.com or at the door. Youth and college students with a valid college ID may purchase tickets for $5. A box lunch from Panera Bread will be available for $12 with a reservation. Reserve by emailing bobbiehill@embarqmail.com by Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Wedding Planning at the Beach The Crystal Coast has a variety of options to help you plan the perfect wedding. Crookston Performs in Beaufort Artist, writer, singer, guitar picker, painter, claw hammer banjo player, eco-village member and believer in all things possible – that’s an apt description of Joe Crookston. If you love a moving melody, you won’t want to miss Crookston’s performance at 8pm on Saturday, Jan. 10, at Clawson’s 1905 in Beaufort. Doors open at 7pm. Sponsored by the Down East Folk Arts Society, general admission tickets are$15; $12, members; and $8, students. Crookston delivers time and time again :the melodies, the lyrics, the energy and a deep passion for exceptionally well-written songs. From the first strum of his 1948 Gibson, through stories of ruby red dresses, Tinian Island, Dylan Thomas, Taoist parables and drunken roosters audiences are drawn in and deeply moved by his music. It happens every time, critics say. To learn more, call 252-646-4657 or visit www.downeastfolkarts.org

Along with others she worked tirelessly with legislators to pass a bill into public law, HR 765, which protects these wild horses. Mason will discuss the work that is done on the mainland to ready these wild horses for adoption, as well as her work with Park Ranger Sue Stuska of the National Park Service.

book bag

Lila By Marilynne Robinson IT IS ABOUT a knife. That could be an accurate review of Marilynne Robinson’s latest book in the “Gilead” series. That would not, of course, be the full story. The complete story is about two people who deserve the comfort of love, about two people from different worlds who find each other, about two people who discover the mysteries of existence. “Lila” is a stream of consciousness novel about a girl who searches through her harsh early years for stability and knowledge to find it in an old minister who welcomes her into his faith and home, marries her and fathers her child. John Ames is the preacher first introduced in the acclaimed novel, “Gilead.” When he encounters Lila, he has lost his first wife and child and lives alone as the pastor of his small congregation. Lila is now a grown woman who has lived through years as an itinerant roaming with a band of migrants during the depression and as a prostitute in a house of ill repute. She stumbles into the small Iowa town through an unexplained providence. Rescued from an abusive home at age 5, Lila has lost the one person who cared for her during her early years, another lost soul named Doll who is the one who took Lila to protect her.

The one thing Lila has in her possession to remind her of Doll is a knife used as protection. Even in her new existence Lila treasures the knife. John Ames is wonderfully understanding as Robinson has written. He lets Lila hold on to the few good memories of her tragic past and recognizes her limitations as she only went to school for one year. “But he seemed to know she had to be told everything, that she wouldn’t know what to ask. The earth goes around the sun. It spins and it tips. All right.” Readers will not soon forget John and Lila, their unusual relationship, and their love which seems both fragile and strong. Lila is a novel about redemption. It is an exploration into faith seen from two very different points of view. John is wise and has spent many years in the study of the scriptures. Lila is also wise but in worldly knowledge. John tells her that “God is good.” Lila responds, “Some of the time.” John introduces her to the Bible. “She never expected to find so many things she already knew about written in a book.” The author provides spiritual insights which entice the reader to rethink some of what they have learned about religion. This novel jumps around which makes it difficult to follow at times. Those who stay with it will find their way through an amazing spiritual and relational journey. The prose here is as good as it comes. The characters are as rich as found in any other work of fiction. As comfortable as life is with John Ames, the reader must wait to see if the itinerant Lila will stay with him after her baby is born. Ames is prepared for the day she will leave. Does she? rental signs

Resolutions and Relationships WE ARE IN that liminal space now between the frosty end of this year and the sunny, wintry beginning of the next. It is a lovely way to begin the fresh new year by reflecting on the triumphs and the sorrows of the previous year, then resolving, once again, that this year, 2015 we will be stronger, kinder and better selves. As you reflect back, I hope 2014 was an extraordinarily successful one for you as a vacation rental homeowner as it was for so many of us on the Crystal Coast. With that success breeds a responsibility to your rental guests that have already begun booking for the spring, summer and fall of 2015. Ponder with me, as we do as your professional property management team, how you can “be in the middle and love it?” By investing some time and energy into your relationship with your professional management team and your relationship with your rental guests, I promise it will make the difference between you loving your investment island home or considering it one of the major aggravations in your life. Whether your dream was to own a home by the sea or whether you have inherited a beach cottage passed down through two or three generations, you now find yourself in that place of responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of this property. If you have not already befriended your vacation rental management team, make this relationship your first priority

during these early months of 2015. Get to know them personally, invite them to visit at your beach home and to have a good heart to heart conversation about what your goals are for your investment property this year. Encourage them to open up to you where they believe you could improve the décor, furnishings and comfort of your vacation rental cottage or condo. For you see, the other important relationship and responsibility is to the rental families that arrive joyfully every check-in day, and you surely don’t want to disappoint them either. This relationship may seem invisible to you, but it is very real to your rental guests. In these somewhat difficult economic times, many of our families sacrifice, save and scrimp so that their children can enjoy a week at the beach. The sacrifice should not include staying in a substandard home that appears to have been “orphaned” and neglected by the homeowner. By being in the middle and loving it, you will have fostered a wonderful friendship and partnership with your vacation rental manager. Likewise, your efforts to ensure an attractive, comfortable beach home in the early months of 2015 will pay off in the huge smiles and priceless, loving memories your home by the sea will create for your vacationing families. Resolutions and relationships are the heart and soul, the defining moment for ensuring the rental season of 2015 will be the most successful of all. county perspective

County Asks for Port Dredging Funds THE CARTERET COUNTY Board of Commissioners is requesting emergency funding to dredge the channel leading to the Morehead City Port, because shoaling is occurring, which is adversely affects movement of vessels in and out of the port. Commissioners passed a formal resolution on Nov. 17, 2014, asking the US Army Corps of Engineers to perform emergency dredging as soon as possible. (The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved a similar resolution on Dec. 4.) Port pilots have normally operated in the past in 45 feet MHW (Mean High Water) and 42 feet MLW (Mean Low Water), but the channel conditions were recently measured at 36 feet MHW and 33 feet MLW. As a result, vessels must arrive and depart with less than their maximum allowable load. This is not a good situation for anyone’s bottom line. In addition, the transiting of vessels entering or leaving the Morehead City Port is being scheduled for “daylight hours only” at the pilot’s discretion. County commissioners say the situation needs to be remedied quickly, because of the economic importance of the port to local communities, the region and the state. The NC State Ports Authority, through its ports in Wilmington and

Morehead City, generates more than $14 billion to the state’s economy and contributes more than $700 million in state and local taxes. The Morehead City Port is designated by the US Dept. of Defense as a national strategic seaport, providing significant support to military deployment requirements for operations in eastern North Carolina and the Tidewater area of Virginia. On a related matter, the county commissioners and chamber board are on the same page related to placement of dredged material from the Morehead City Harbor. Both entities have passed resolutions asking the NC Division of Coastal Management to adopt a “preferred standard” for Beaufort Inlet. The county has struggled constantly over time to force the Army Corps of Engineers not to dump dredged material offshore, but to place it on the beaches of Bogue Banks to provide protection to valuable infrastructure to enhance recreational and environmental benefits associated with wide, healthy beaches. Greg “Rudi” Rudolph, Carteret County shore protection officer, said the proper placement of clean, beach-quality dredged material on beaches will also “minimize shoaling and replicate the natural littoral system.” Mike Wagoner, President Carteret County Chamber of Commerce

chamber connection

Chamber Develops 2015 Legislative Agenda THE CARTERET COUNTY Chamber of Commerce delivered its 2015 Legislative Agenda to state legislators in December, and the face-to-face exchange occurs on Friday, Jan. 9, with the annual Pre-Session Legislative Luncheon. The luncheon program begins at 11:45am at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast, 152 Oakleaf Drive, Pine Knoll Shores. This event is open to the public and the cost to attend is $15. Call the chamber to register at 252-726-6350. Sen. Norman Sanderson and Rep. Pat McElraft are confirmed to attend and deliver remarks. Also, Carteret County Manager Russell Overman will provide a “County Perspective.” Mary Carlyle Brown, chair of the Chamber’s Public & Government Affairs Committee, said: “The Chamber’s 2015 Legislative Agenda will focus on state-level issues that are important to our members. While the chamber does not endorse or support specific candidates for elected office at the federal, state and local levels, we do take seriously our obligation to set forth a pro-business roadmap for our legislators to follow. “The chamber speaks as the ‘Voice of Business’ and is actively involved in issues advocacy and seeks to influence public policy decisions,” Brown noted. “Our top tier of legislative priorities always includes

transportation and US 70. We continue to ask the General Assembly to provide equitable funding for highway construction and maintenance in the rural areas of the state. It is vitally important that we have good roads to support our tourism base. “We know we will have to fight long and hard to maintain the existing School Calendar Law that mandates a uniform school start date of the Monday closest to Aug. 26. Fortunately, Sen. Sanderson and Rep. McElraft have told us this is one of their priorities as well.” Brown added: “Perhaps 2015 will be the year the lawmakers enact true insurance reforms,” she said. “The rate-making process desperately needs to be overhauled, in our opinion.” Other top-tier priorities for the chamber are: Support for the military; support for increased funding for the public schools; and support to ensure that sustainable funding is being provided to the community college system. “Because of the many concerns swirling around health care services, access, affordability and costs, we have moved several health care issues up into the top tier in 2015,” Brown said. The Chamber’s 2015 Legislative Agenda can be viewed on the chamber website, www.nccoastchamber.com. The General Assembly is scheduled to convene in Raleigh on Jan. 14 for the Long Session. mayor’s notes

Giving Thanks and Looking Forward I WOULD LIKE to begin by thanking everyone for all their hard work in making Christmas a wonderful time in Emerald Isle. First a big thanks to the Emerald Isle Business Association for an outstanding Christmas Parade. The parade was under the direction of Don Wells and Don did a fantastic job in getting the parade organized. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the parade a success. A mayor from another town said it was the largest crowd of any parade in Carteret County in the last six years. Thanks for a job well done. I would also like to thank Colonel Monclova and the Neighborhood Watch Committee for hosting a dinner for our police department in December. It was a fun evening for our outstanding police. I would like to thank our churches for their leadership in filling shoe boxes for children around the world. It was a wonderful day in Emerald isle as we sent hundreds of shoe boxes filled with Christmas gifts for boys and girls through Samaritans Purse. I was so proud of the way our two island churches, Chapel by the Sea and Emerald Isle Baptist reached out with open hearts to kids around the world. I can only imagine the joy, excitement and wonder as these children open their own shoe box filled with gifts of love. Thanks to everyone who brought by goodies to the town

administration building. Your gifts of love overwhelmed us each and every day. January brings cold weather and the threat of snow and ice but January also means the days are getting longer and sunset is a little later each day. January affords us the opportunity to look forward to another year of new beginnings and new opportunities. I have taken up walking and try to walk 4-5 miles each day. I love walking outside when the air is crisp and the skies are a bright blue. The Duke fans call it a Duke Blue and the Carolina fans call it a Carolina Blue. Whatever you call it, the sky is a beautiful blue. As I walk in the early mornings or late afternoons I always look forward to walking by the homes that have a wood burning fireplace and smell the beautiful aroma of a wood burning fire. Walking gives me the chance to think out loud and to give God the blessings for all the gifts bestowed upon me. So if you see me talking to myself, please know that I am OK. It is my time to give thanks. I wish you and your family a Happy New Year. As we begin a new year lets us all move forward to new opportunities and new ways to help each other. Yes, January is a time of moving forward and putting the past behind us. May God bless you in 2015.

~Emerald Tidings~ Eastern Ocean Regional Access Closed Until April

THE TOWN’S CONTRACTOR, SunLand Builders, will be constructing parking lot and storm water improvements at the Eastern Ocean Regional Access (future site of a planned new ocean fishing pier) from December-April, and the facility will be closed to the public during that time. The town looks forward to the completion of these improvements, which are funded by a NC Waterfront Access and Marine Industry Fund grant. The Eastern Ocean Regional Access will reopen to the public in time for warm weather in April! In the meantime, the town’s access facilities at 3rd Street, Islander Drive (Western Ocean Regional Access) and Station Street remain open with parking for beach visitors this winter.

County to Implement 2015 Tax Revaluation

Carteret County will be mailing new tax value notices to all property owners in January 2015, and these new tax values will be the basis for annual property tax bills in Carteret County and Emerald Isle for the next four years. Overall, tax values in Emerald Isle are expected to decrease slightly, however, some properties will likely experience increases while others decrease more dramatically. Carteret County is establishing the new property tax values based on the results of a detailed review of market conditions. Property owners who disagree with or question the new tax value may file an appeal to the Carteret County Tax Office. For contact information and more, please visit www.carteretcountync.gov/154/tax-office. The new tax value is only one factor that impacts the amount of an individual property tax bill. The Carteret County Board of Commissioners and the Emerald Isle Board of Commissioners will set new property tax rates (applied to the new tax values) in June 2015 and the amount of an individual property tax bill will depend on the new tax rates established at that time. Both the county and the town have a history of very low property tax rates and every effort will continue to be made to limit the cost of local government!

Emerald Path Receives Greenway Designation

The town’s popular bicycle path network now includes approximately 11 miles of dedicated asphalt path along Hwy 58 and Coast Guard Road. The town was recently notified that the Emerald Path has been officially designated as part of the East Coast Greenway, a 2,900 mile long route from Calais, Maine to Key West, Fla. The Emerald Path is part of the Historic Coastal alternative route that travels from the Tidewater area of Virginia all along the North Carolina coast into South Carolina. The town is pleased to be designated as part of the East Coast Greenway and appreciates the hard work of our Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to secure this designation. For more information about the East Coast Greenway, please visit www.greenway.org.

County Seeks Volunteers

Controlled Deer Hunt Set for January, February

The Emerald Isle Police Dept. will again oversee a controlled deer hunt in January and February 2015 as part of the town’s efforts to effectively manage the local deer population. All hunting efforts will be conducted by qualified personnel using bow and arrow weapons only, and will occur in limited wooded areas only. The highest priority is placed upon public safety, and all activities are tightly controlled. population and the 2015 hunt will be targeted to meet that goal. All deer meat will be donated to the Hope Mission in Morehead City. The 2014 controlled deer hunt resulted in approximately 1,000 lbs of deer meat donated to feed the hungry. For more information, please contact Police Chief Jeff Waters at 252-354-2021 or jwaters@emeraldisle-nc.org. Please note that the town does NOT need additional hunters for this effort.

County Sales Tax Referendum Defeated

The recent Carteret County sales tax referendum, which would have increased the local sales tax by 0.25%, failed by a roughly 2-1 margin on Nov. 4. The sales tax would have generated approximately $2.5 million annually for waterway dredging in the entire County. The county and the town will need to continue to rely on general tax revenues to provide local funding for maintenance dredging in Bogue Inlet in the future. The combined county and town cost for Bogue Inlet dredging has averaged approximately $75,000 +/- every 1-2 years in the past (due to availability of state funding and contributions from other local governments), however, this amount may increase in the future.

Long-Serving Finance Director to Retire

Mitsy Overman, the town’s long-serving Finance Director, will retire in January 2015 after more than 18 years of service

to the town! Mitsy has also served as the town’s Assistant Town Manager since 2001, and served as interim Town Manager for several months in 2001. Prior to her service to Emerald Isle, Mitsy served for two decades with the Town of Atlantic Beach. The town greatly appreciates Mitsy’s service, and wishes her the very best in retirement! The town has hired Laura Rotchford as the new Finance Director, and she will begin work in mid-December. Laura comes to the town from the City of Jacksonville, where she has served as the head of the city’s accounting division. Laura is a certified public accountant with a master’s degree in accounting. We look forward to working with Laura in the future!

Happy New Year!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and is looking forward to the year ahead. Please note that town offices and the community center will also be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1. In addition, no trash will be collected from the sound side that day.

at the AQUARIUM Make Art, Not Trash GIVE 2014 AN imaginative send-off on Tuesday, Dec. 30 with a fun family activity that blends creativity, community and conservation. The aquarium hosts the Scrap Exchange’s Art by the Truckload from noon to 4pm as part of the Crystal Coast Countdown. The Scrap Exchange, based in Durham, describes itself as a “creative re-use”

center. Art by the Truckload is its traveling outreach program. The Scrap Exchange provides boxes and barrels of reclaimed materials that can be used as media to make your individual or group masterpiece – colorful fabric scraps, factory samples, plastic bits and pieces, cardboard tubes and much more good stuff kept out of landfills. Scissors, tape and other tools and staff guidance are provided. Participation is free – just tell the cashiers you’re here for the Scarp Exchange art project. Regular admission does apply if you want to visit the aquarium itself.

Now Open New Year’s Day Should auld acquaintance be forgot? Not this year. You can now visit river otters Pungo, Neuse and Eno, the white sea turtle, Nimbus and all your other favorite animals on New Year’s Day. The aquarium is open normal operating hours – 9am-5pm – on Jan. 1, with the usual schedule of free programs and activities.

Free Admission and Food Drive More on “Auld Lang Syne” – we’ll take a cup of kindness yet. The aquarium offers free admission for all visitors and conducts a food drive on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, Monday, Jan. 19. Visitors are encouraged to bring nonperishable edibles to help the local food pantry, Martha’s Mission Cupboard, restock the shelves after the holiday rush. Aquarium staff will collect and deliver the food. Cereal, peanut butter, powdered milk, canned fruit and vegetables, dried beans, rice, saltines and other staples top the list of needed items.

Meet the locals!

at Pine Knoll Shores

Donations are not required for free admission. The aquarium is open as usual 9am-5pm and dive programs, animal presentations and animal feedings happen throughout the day on the regular schedule.

Nimbus News Nimbus, the white sea turtle and one of the aquarium’s most popular residents, has moved from the Ancient Seas gallery to the Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit. Nimbus arrived in August 2010 as a tiny, weak hatchling. It had been found when a hatched-out Pine Knoll Shores nest was excavated for baby turtles that didn’t get out of the sand. It needed help with eating because of a cleft palate. Diminished vision later became evident. But Nimbus has thrived under the aquarium’s care and now weighs about 24 pounds. A lack of normal pigmentation causes its unusual color pattern. Its sex is not known. The Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit features a replication of debris from a shipwreck in Beaufort Inlet thought to be the remains of the flagship of a pirate fleet commanded by infamous Blackbeard. Nimbus shares the space with fish that populate some of North Carolina’s many shipwrecks.

Holiday Camps Winter camps turn the January school holidays into learning adventures. Senses in the Seas on Monday, Jan. 19 is geared toward first and second graders, and Animal Enrichment Camp on Tuesday, Jan. 20 is for grades four through six. Both camps feature behind-the-scenes action, crafts and animal encounters appropriate for the respective age groups. Camps meet 8:30am-2:30pm and require advance registration and fees. Space is limited so register soon.

The Dish on Fish Spice up your wintertime fare with the local catch. Succulent Seafood takes you to the area’s top restaurants for tips and techniques straight from the chefs on cooking local seafood. The grand finale for each session is a taste test of the day’s featured cuisine. This program runs many Monday afternoons and an occasional Tuesday through March. Advance registration is required. Plan ahead – the sessions fill up fast. See the website for dates and details. If you want to catch your own, consider the annual Get Hooked Fishing School on March 21, featuring presentations by experienced anglers on many aspects of this favorite coastal pastime. The fee is $60 per person; $54 for aquarium members. Space is limited so sign up early – online, by phone or at the aquarium. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is 5ive miles west of Atlantic Beach at 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512. The aquarium is open 9am-5pm daily except closed Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Admission is $10.95 for ages 13-61; $9.95 for age 62 and up and military; $8.95 for ages 3-12; no charge for age 2 and under and NC Aquarium Society members. PINE KNOLL SHORES

mayor’s notes

Welcome 2015! LAST MONTH WE relived some of the great times and accomplishments of 2014 in Pine Knoll Shores, so this month we’ll look ahead to 2015! The best thing about looking to the future is that everything always works out just perfect from a distance. But dreams don’t always work out. Last year we fought hard to keep the county distribution of sales and use tax on an ad valorem basis vice going to a per capita distribution; based on population. As we went through that exercise we found that to make that change the county commissioners have to vote on it during the month of April and it would go into effect immediately. That challenge rises again in 2015. We have used the town’s strategic planning document on every move. As you remember we adopted the Strategic Plan this past year because it was based on input from you and helps us plan for the next five years. On Feb. 5 and 6 the board of commissioners will hold its annual “off-site” strategic planning meeting. This is open to the public and a full agenda will be published so that you may come if there is a subject of particular interest to you. We also use this as a start to our budget process for the upcoming fiscal year which starts in July 2015. Just a few of the subjects that will be discussed include beach vegetation and fertilizing, sidewalks, recycling and a stipend pay increase for the commissioners. As always we welcome your feedback and input on any and all subjects in our town. This year we will sponsor the 8th annual “Kayak for the

Warriors” events and fundraiser. This year Mayor Ken Jones we have started planning for a May 30 5K “Challenge Run” on the beach and in Beacons Reach, a reception/auction on June 4, and the signature Kayak Race on June 6. Last year our event raised over $80,000! I can’t wait to paddle the canal again! More to follow later, but you should certainly make plans now! We will have elections in November this year. Terms are up, and therefore open for election, for two commissioners and the mayor (me). The commissioner positions are each for four year terms and the mayor is elected to a two year term. Filing is usually around the first week in July and runs for two weeks. Please watch for the filing period to open. We always strive for better communication with some of our distant property owners, taxpayers, and citizens of our town. Most are familiar with the radio station, the Shoreline, our emails and website and Facebook. I have a “Dinner with the Mayor” about every quarter at a location that supports the town’s PARCard. This winter we will hold a dinner in Apex for our citizens in that area. I’m very excited about this. Additionally, we will start broadcasting our board of commissioners meetings online. Communication with you always remains at the top of our priority list! So another wonderful year ahead in Pine Knoll Shores! I look forward to seeing you walking, biking, or working in your yards. We will have a great year! One team, One town, One Pine Knoll Shores!

club news PKS Garden Club IT’S HARD GETTING back to our normal daily routines after a bustling month of decorating, shopping, visiting, feasting and wonderful camaraderie during the Christmas holidays. At our November meeting, Carolyn Mechanye, designer and owner of Avalon Event Floral in Morehead City, shared ideas and ingenuity in creating simple, but beautiful decorations for the holidays. She demonstrated three lovely, but very different, floral arrangements using as a base – a candle holder, a block of oasis and a flower vase. She uses natural materials whenever available – using greenery from the yard, flat cedar leaves, beach pebbles, shells, magnolia leaf clusters, crape myrtle pods, cotton bolls and jasmine circles to beautify her candle holder; flat cedar leaves, overtime baby’s breath (the large flower type), roses with their petals turned back, magnolia leaves, and a small bow for her arrangement made with an oasis base; and for her floral vase with water, she added magnolia branches, pittosporum, flat cedar, crabapple branches, dusty miller, blue thistle, curly willow, white roses, and lemon balm for fragrance. During the business meeting, Kay Howe reported that 132 beautiful Frazer fir, boxwood and cypress wreaths had been ordered this year. Martha Edwards invited everyone in Pine Knoll Shores to the fire station to help fashion wreaths to be hung throughout the town during the holidays. Donna Belanger created large beautiful bows for each wreath. Lois Jean O’Keefe announced that she has located a company to repair and preserve the stonework that surrounds the Hereth Garden at town hall and is awaiting an estimate for the work. Meetings are held at town hall on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30am for refreshments, followed at 10 by the program of the day. Visitors and guests are always welcome, and members are especially anticipating guests for the Jan. 14 meeting when Rodney Kemp regales members with his Garden Memories. Clare Winslow

PKS Women’s Club One in 88 children in the United States is on the autism spectrum; one in 70 children in Carteret County have been diagnosed with autism, according to Billy Jo Castevens, a parent of autistic children and a local activist on behalf of autistic individuals and their families. Castevens spoke to the Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club in November 2014 stressing that early intervention is the key in addressing autism; the earlier it is diagnosed and therapeutically treated, the better the prognosis for the individual. Autism is not a disease, but rather is a neurological developmental disability. There is no clear cause of autism, research is ongoing and the cause is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Often it is grandparents who are the first to notice the symptoms; parents often don’t recognize the problem or are in denial. Symptoms include unusual social interaction, communication problems, repetitive behaviors, agitation and dysfunctional sensory integration. The entire family faces the challenges associated with autism when one or more family members are autistic. Castevens speaks from experience; she adopted two autistic children and also mentors their birth mother who has developmental disabilities. However, she said, with the right intervention individuals with autism can be successful in life. The recently established Crystal Coast Autism Center in Morehead City (ccautismcenter.org) offers a variety of therapeutic and support services for autistic children and their families. Club members found the presentation very enlightening. Many members have grandchildren, relatives, friends and neighbors who are dealing with the stress of providing for autistic family members. Castevens provided valuable information on available services, coping mechanisms and encouragement.

In December, the club turned its attention to the upcoming Christmas holiday with a sumptuous buffet lunch at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast. Entertainment was provided by self-taught pianist Cathi Turner who created a festive atmosphere with her holiday renditions. Many members invited spouses and partners to join in the festivities and the country club’s dining room was filled with conversation and laughter as members socialized with old friends and new members. Ronnie Stanley, Betty Thomas and Barbara Zaik deserve special thanks for planning the event and Gail Halada, Kay Howe and Loretta Paremba assembled a table filled with beautiful and varied raffle items. This luncheon event was a wonderful kickoff to the holiday season. The next meeting of the PKS Women’s Club will be at 9:30am on Friday, Jan. 23, at town hall. Dr. Mindy Merritt will speak on breast health and recent advances in cancer prevention. Guests are always welcome to attend the club’s monthly meetings. Membership in the Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club is open to any women residing in town.

tourism BAROMETER Festival Tourism Provides Huge Economic Benefits VISITORS PUMP MILLIONS of dollars into the Crystal Coast every year thanks to the growing number of events, festivals and tournaments held here. These events are attractions that have drawing and staying power. They not only bring in new visitors but help keep visitors here longer spending money at hotels, restaurants and other area businesses. There are many signature events throughout the year on the Crystal Coast including the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, NC Seafood Festival, Emerald Isle St. Patrick;s Festival, Beaufort Wine and Food Weekend, Atlantic Beach Music Festival and Beaufort Pirate Invasion, just to name a few. The social benefits of festivals are just as important. It’s fair to say that festivals foster community pride, teach people new things, and strengthen relationships. Hometown pride is an important factor in the development and improvement of any town. Festivals provide free marketing and advertising to local businesses as visitors talk about their experiences when they go back home. If they post comments and photos on Facebook or other social media sites, so much the better. The economic benefits of successful events ripple throughout the county affecting tourism and non-tourism related businesses. It’s difficult to accurately gauge the economic impact from festivals without conducting a targeted economic impact  survey. The NC Seafood Festival had this done several years

Sale in Progress!

ago and found that the festival had a $25.5 million economic impact on the county. This was back when the festival was only two days. Now that it has grown into a 3-day event and taking into effect the increase in prices and cost of living, it is now estimated that the current economic impact well exceeds the $40 million dollar mark!  The Beaufort Wine and Food Weekend has raised over $400,000 for local charities since the beginning of the festival 10 years ago. Also taking place in Beaufort, the Old Homes & Gardens Tour is one of the premier events drawing the type of clientele who likes to shop, eat out at area restaurants and more, giving local merchants a big economic boost. With over 10,000 people who have visited Beaufort for the Homes Tour, this event is one of the best for the community. Many businesses in Emerald Isle claim that the Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Festival is their biggest day of the year. Retailers, restaurants and realtors see a big surge in business and hotels that are at maximum capacity that weekend. Several businesses that close after the holiday season also plan their reopening for that weekend. Crystal Coast Countdown, a multi-day countywide New Year’s event brings large numbers of visitors to the Crystal Coast during a time when tourism normally is very slow. Festival tourism is big business and is a great way to keep regular visitors coming back and attract new ones!

Can BEER Boost Brain Power? THERE IS NEWFOUND reason to indulge in a pint or two of your favorite beer, and it’s not just to catch up and share a few laughs with friends. New research has shown that a chemical compound in beer may be able to improve cognitive function. The beverage once thought to obliterate brain cells when consumed in abundance may actually have the opposite effect and boost brain power. No one should run out and start imbibing just yet, however. The study that ran in Behavioral Brain Research in October 2014 was preliminary and only conducted on lab mice. During the study, scientists discovered that xanthohumol, a type of flavonoid found in beer, seemed to improve brain function in the young mice. The cognitive flexibility of the mice was tested with a specially designed maze, and younger mice showed signs of intellectual improvement. Older mice showed no improvements. Researchers believe xanthohumol and other flavonoids, such as those found in red wine, blueberries and dark chocolate, may play a role in helping a person form memories. The mice were given very high doses of the flavonoid. A person would have to drink roughly 2,000 liters of beer a day to equal what the mice consumed to show improvement, however, should a supplement hit the market down the road, it may

just be possible for men and women to consume a potentially beneficial amount of xanthohumol without bellying up at the bar. One of the goals of the xanthohumol study was to examine its potential efficacy at treating age-related deficits in memory. Xanthohumol also may benefit those with metabolic syndrome, a condition associated with obesity and high blood pressure, as it can speed metabolism and reduce fatty acids in the liver. Flavonoids are plant compounds that often provide plants with their color. Scientists have attributed many health benefits to flavonoids in foods and plants and have even suggested flavonoids can help in the fight against cancer and heart disease. Xanthohumol is rare and is most often found in the hops commonly used to make beer. While doctors and researchers do not suggest consuming a few six packs right now in the goal of improving brain function or cramming for that next college exam, xanthohumol may one day be harvested from beer hops to slow down age-related memory deficits.
