coasting Happy Birthday, America!

THIS FOURTH OF July weekend is sure to be one of the busiest along the Crystal Coast, with a full menu of activities for the family to choose from. From arts and crafts to community parades, and, of course, lots of fireworks, everyone will find something to celebrate during the long weekend.

For those interested in doing a little browsing, and perhaps a little shopping, the Carteret County Arts & Crafts Coalition’s Summer Show is planned for July 2-3 at the Beaufort Historic Site.

Planned from 10am-5pm on Saturday and noon-5pm on Sunday, it’s a great place to find some of the area’s most talented artists and craftsmen.

Atlantic Beach will host its annual Fourth of July celebration on Sunday, July 3.

Fireworks begin at dusk and are best viewed from the beach. For more information, call 252-726-2121.

At 11am on Monday, July 4, the Beaufort Business Association brings its annual community parade to the historic downtown streets. For more information, or to enter, call Martha Barnes at 252-728-3917.

For people looking for a more whimsical way to celebrate the country’s birthday, the underwater bike race is organized annually

by Discovery Diving in Beaufort. Certified divers spend a portion of the morning decorating bicycles before they take them down to race across the deck of a nearby wreck. To learn more, or to register, call 252-728-2265.

It’s Monday that all the kids, and the kids at heart, are waiting for. And in Carteret County we have nothing but options when it comes to viewing fireworks.

Jaycee Park in Morehead City draws about 5,000 people a year for its popular festivities. Fireworks light up the sky at dusk, followed by a street dance featuring the Main Event Band. For more information, call 252-726-5083.

The town of Emerald Isle’s Fourth of July celebration will be held at Bogue Inlet Pier, not at McLean Park as stated in the June edition of Island Review. Even farther down the beach, you can catch a colorful display over the White Oak River. Swansboro and Cedar Point partner to make this event a regional favorite. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy music by the sea before the grand event. Food vendors will also be on hand. For more information visit swansboro-nc.org.

The Battle of Fort Macon Celebrate Fort Macon State Park, July 9-10, as the site welcomes the 1st North Carolina Volunteers for a weekend encampment.

In all their pageantry and dress, the group will reenact the fort’s capture on April 14, 1861, bringing the fort back to the vital role it played during the Civil War. The event runs from 10am-4pm each day and is open and free for the public. Expect discussions on flags, uniforms, women’s appropriate dress, musket firing demonstrations and much more.

Free Summer Entertainment Visitors and residents looking for something to do this summer should keep in mind that there is an abundance of outside music to take in along the way.

Sponsored by the Morehead City Parks and Recreation Department, the Concert in the Park series is a popular part of Morehead City’s downtown offerings. Running from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the concerts are held each Saturday at Jaycee Park, 9th and Shepard streets.

Concerts run from 7-8:30pm and feature a wide variety of artists. Scheduled to appear this month are Carolina Beach Club on July 2; The Main Event Band, July 4; Capt. Mancave, July 9; Irvine, July 16; and Panyelo, July 30. For a full schedule, call 252726-5083.

For those who prefer to stay on the beach, outdoor music can also be found at Fort Macon State Park.

Concerts begin at 7pm on various Fridays, June through August. Still to come this season are Conch Stew, July 8; Scearce & Ketner, July 15; Morehead City Brass Consortium, July 22; and Wild Honey, Aug. 5.

At the western end of the beach, the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation Department is doing a little musical celebration of its own with Beach Jive after Five. With the crash of the waves as a backdrop, the town welcomes performers on July 14, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15. Concerts run from 5:30-7:30pm at the Western Ocean Regional Access. For all destinations, guests are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs and other items to make the show more comfortable. All programs are family-friendly and alcohol is prohibited.

Surfin’ the Buddy Surfers from around the county and beyond will flock to the Bogue Inlet Pier in Emerald Isle this July 30-31 for the annual Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic. With amateurs and professionals alike, this annual tradition moves to a new location and brings with it a history of friendly competition in a variety of categories.

Saturday’s competition is capped off with a beach party and live entertainment and Sunday rolls to a close with an awards presentation.

The competition is held annually in honor of the late Buddy Pelletier, a local resident and a member of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. A top ranked shortboarder in the 1980s, Pelletier returned to his longboard roots shortly before his untimely death.

Movies at the Beach On Wednesday nights the Atlantic Beach Circle will be the place to be for family-friendly movies. Grab a lawn chair, maybe a blanket, and join neighbors and friends for some special outdoor entertainment.

The movies, which begin at 8pm each Wednesday, are free to attend. The July line-up includes “Wizard of Oz,” “Megamind,” “Jaws” and “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

Racing ‘Round the Island Experienced sailors are invited to participate in the Sunfish class Harkers Island Regatta, celebrating its tenth year, July 3031. The brainchild of Rob Eberle and George Evans, the race sees contestants circumnavigating the island, picking their own route as they sail through marshland and other obstacles.

Short course races are held on Sunday, followed by lunch and the presentation of awards. A perpetual trophy marks the winner and provides bragging rights for at least a year.

Crew size is not limited. Registration begins at 9:30am Saturday,

July 30 at Shell Point, directly across the road from the National Park Service at the end of the Harkers Island Road. The cost to register is $35 for vessel, $25 for skippers 16 and under. This year, all funds will go toward sailing scholarships for junior sailing programs in Beaufort, Oriental and New Bern. R E N TA L Signs How to Be a Hero to Your Rental Guests (and Your Vacation Rental Manager) IT’S A HOT July day in your hometown and you are deep into a project at work. Your cell phone rings or an email pops up in your inbox from your vacation rental manager at the beach. Without meaning to, you sigh as you take the call or read the email, knowing with rental guests in house, it might be bad news. Sure enough, the compressor has gone out on your seven-year-old A/C system and to make matters worse, the rental guests have a) their 92-year-old grandma with them, b) a 3-month-old infant, or c) all of the above. How can you be a hero to your vacation rental guests in this predicament?

The most important ingredients in providing a positive customer service outcome in situations like this is to respond with empathy and compassion. If your family were on vacation, how would you like the vacation rental management company to respond? Just as important, wouldn’t you expect the vacation homeowner to make the repair as quickly as possible?

Vacation rental managers have a great deal of expertise with any maintenance issue that arises and here is where the trust factor comes in, especially since you have built up a rapport and relationship over the years of having them manage your property. They are in the best position to recommend who can make the most cost efficient and time efficient repair. If it is your permanent residence, not your vacation home, you

could take days to get second or third opinions and shop around because you don’t mind putting up with the personal discomfort. When we are talking about a vacation of seven days and three are spent without air conditioning and the heat index is in the high 90s, then you will have a serious customer service crisis.

Whatever the maintenance repair request may be, you can be a hero to your rental guests and vacation rental management company by making the prompt decision to expedite the repair. Return the phone call or email quickly, listen carefully to what the situation is and authorize the repair. Any delay on your part means there will be a delay in the repair and another lost vacation day for your rental guests. On the other hand, a prompt reply and decision means the maintenance request can be expedited and the rental guest will receive the good news that the repair is underway. Even when parts or a new appliance may need to be ordered, your rental guests are appreciative that the repair is now in progress.

Although rental agreements between vacation rental manager and rental guests frequently include language lowering expectations about refunds from homeowners for repairs, again, this is where you have the opportunity to show faith and confidence in your vacation rental management company. Drawing again from your desire to be empathetic and compassionate, put yourself in the situation of the rental guest who is at your beach home but through no one’s fault, is having “the vacation from hell.”

C O U N T Y Perspective Legislature Considers Changing Highway ‘Equity Formula’ REALIZING THAT IT’S ALWAYS RISKY business to write about what the General Assembly may or may not do – or already did or didn’t do – by the time this issues rolls off the press, here goes: A bill was introduced in the legislature on April 5 to change the equity formula for the distribution of highway dollars. House Bill 635 seeks to allocate two-thirds of the state transportation dollars, which go to the 14 highway divisions, based on population with the remaining one-third to be split equally.

The current formula is distributed 50 percent on population (helps urban divisions); 25 percent based on the number of intrastate roads that need improving (helps rural divisions); and 25 percent equal share. The bill would basically reward urban population centers by taking the money dedicated to the rural divisions that still have intrastate road needs that are unmet.

The four bill sponsors all represent urban areas, and so do the five co-sponsors. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation, and Rep. Pat McElraft (R-Emerald Isle) is a member of that committee. Her e-mail is Pat.McElraft@ ncleg.net.

sections of North Carolina would also express their opposition to their legislators back home.

“The chamber opposes any changes to the equity formula that would have a negative impact on Eastern North Carolina by directing more money to the urban areas of the state at the expense of rural counties,” she said. “This is a bad bill, and we need to muster all the energy we can in order to prevent it from moving forward.”

The rural communities will lose seats in the General Assembly with the redistricting that must occur this year. It’s no secret that the urban areas of the state are growing faster than the rural areas.

According to government sources, each of the 50 Senate districts currently has a population of about 161,000. The average population in each new senate district will swell to about 191,000.

In the House of Representatives, each of the 120 districts now has about 67,000 people. The new House districts will move up to 79,500 people.

Drafts of the new redistricting maps are expected to be circulated by mid-June. It’s going to be even more critical that the lawmakers from rural areas in the east and west form legislative coalitions sooner rather than later, in order to minimize the damages of them versus us.

M AY O R ’ S Notes Nags Head Fishing Pier Grand Opening Mayor Art Schools RARELY WILL YOU FIND ME commenting on an event in another town in this column. However, this month I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you about the opening of Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head. Especially since the next aquarium pier will be built in Emerald Isle.

My wife Diane, along with Frank Rush and his wife Suzanne, attended the grand opening of Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head on May 21. All of us were impressed by the pier, and by the fact that it is much more than a fishing pier. Ocean fishing piers have a long history in North Carolina (see Page 55) and it is good to see a new pier that will be here for many years because of its solid construction.

In addition to fishing, it has a lot of educational and environmental aspects. Since it is a project of the NC Aquarium, it has many aquarium exhibits, featuring local species of fish. It also has an educational classroom for the many programs planned for the youngsters. There is a large cistern to collect rainfall off of the roof for use at the site, and three windmills mounted on the pier to generate electricity.

Earlier windmills at other locations seemed to generate a low

pitch noise that was annoying to some, but I didn’t hear any noise at all from these windmills. On the deck of the pier, the windmills are hardly noticeable; and from the balcony of the large meeting room, they were clearly visible, but did not distract from the view at all.

There are also plans to allow educational facilities to mount monitoring devices below the pier to provide research data for educational purposes, such as water temperature, wave height, salinity and I am sure a host of other things. Status of Proposed Aquarium Pier at Emerald Isle The town and the NC Aquariums continue to work hard on the development of the proposed aquarium pier at Emerald Isle. Although the current budget climate will not allow construction to begin as soon as originally hoped, the town and the NC Aquariums remain committed to the project.

The design team for the project, led by Moffatt & Nichol Engineers and BJAC Architects, continues its work and expects to complete design work later in 2011.

The new pier will be located at the town’s Eastern Ocean Regional Access (site of the old Emerald Isle Pier) and will extend 1,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. The new pier will utilize concrete supports to withstand future storm activity, but will retain the feel of a traditional NC fishing pier with wooden decking and railings. The pier house will be approximately 12,000 sq. ft., and will be constructed over the flat beach area. The pier house will include all of the traditional pier house amenities, and will also include educational exhibits and classrooms to enhance the public’s understanding of the ocean environment. The new facility will be owned and managed by the NC Aquariums.

The town and the NC Aquariums plan to complete a small, soundside pier in Bogue Sound at the project site later in 2011. The soundside component will be linked to the ocean fishing pier, providing both an ocean and sound fishing and viewing experience for visitors.

The NC Aquariums intend to construct and operate three ocean fishing piers and educational facilities on the NC coast – one affiliated with each of the three aquariums along the northern, central and southern coast.

The first pier, Jennette’s Pier, opened in Nags Head on May 21. The aquarium pier at Emerald Isle is number two in the queue, and a third pier is planned in Carolina Beach.

It will take a little longer than we had initially hoped, but the town and the NC Aquarium continues to work hard to make this project a reality in the future!

Yard Waste Collection Program Experiencing Significant Workload Volumes The recent beautiful spring weather has been ideal for doing yard work around the house, and the town has experienced a significant volume of yard waste this spring that has, unfortunately, led to some delays in collecting yard debris. The town sincerely apologizes for these delays and any inconvenience and town staff is working hard to get caught up.

The town maintains one yard waste collection truck, one full-time employee and one inmate laborer for this program, and offers every day yard waste collection for those who need the service and contact town offices to be placed on the collection list. The town collects yard waste from approximately

7,500 collection points each year and averages nearly 1,000 collection points each month in April, May, and June, which sometimes presents a challenge to stay on the desired collection schedule during this time of year.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this significant workload.

Emerald Isle Boating Access Area Now Open The new Emerald Isle Boating Access Area is now open to the public. The new facility is located on Bogue Sound near mile marker 18 on Hwy 58 (adjacent to Chapel by the Sea), and has a clearly marked channel to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

As noted on the graphic below, please note that there is an approximately 1,000 ft. long No Wake Zone in effect in the marked channel adjacent to Archers Point.

The new boating access area has 4 launch ramps and parking for 112 vehicle / trailer

combinations. The new facility is open every day, and there is no charge to launch a boat.

Enjoy your boating and fishing adventures!

Lifeguards/Roving Beach Patrol on Duty Fixed lifeguards are on duty every day of the summer at the town’s Western Ocean Regional Access and Eastern Ocean Regional Access from 10am until 5pm. The guarded areas are clearly marked with yellow and red flags. The town also has two Beach Patrol members (trained lifeguards) roving the town’s approximately 12 miles of ocean beach on an all-terrain vehicle from 10am until 5pm daily.

The town provides lifeguard and beach patrol services to be helpful to our residents and visitors, but these services are in addition to, and do not take the place of careful observation by parents, family and friends. The town of Emerald Isle wants everyone to enjoy the beach, but everyone should recognize that the ocean can sometimes be a potentially dangerous place. Please be vigilant in watching after your children’s safety, and your family’s and friends’ safety!

Sea Turtle Nesting and Hatching Season – May 1-Oct. 31 Emerald Isle’s beach is home to numerous sea turtle nests each year, and the town is fortunate to have an active volunteer Sea Turtle Protection Program. Volunteers patrol the beach daily in search of new nests, and tend to the nests to promote their survival until hatching later in the summer and fall.

Please respect the nests on the beach, which are clearly marked with posts and tape. Please help our sea turtles and dedicated volunteers by filling in all beach holes, removing (cont. on page 50)

GardenScape The Shady Days of Summer THINGS ARE HEATING UP outside in the yard and garden by this time of the summer, and air conditioners are working overtime here in Carteret County. Do you know that you can significantly cool your yard and house just by incorporating shade trees into your landscape? If you choose well adapted trees, and keep them watered during their first year and during dry times in the next few years, they will grow and give you that cooling benefit much more quickly than you might think.

An excellent publication from Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension explains: Well-placed trees and shrubs can help cut air-conditioning costs. Trees, shrubs, ground covers, and grass affect solar radiation more than structural devices, such as awnings. This is because plants transpire (release water vapor from leaves) during the day, which serves an evaporative cooling function.

Deciduous plants drop their leaves in winter and have the advantage of allowing sun to reach buildings in the winter for warmth, yet providing shade during the summer.

Shade trees can significantly reduce air temperatures in and outdoors in the summer, as trees intercept and absorb the sun’s heat while transpiring cooling moisture into the air. The shade of trees, placed on the south side of a house, can significantly cool a house in the summer with estimates of up to 30 percent

lower air-conditioning bills compared to an un-shaded house.

In the summer, the temperature under a tree can be 9ºF lower than an adjacent area, and up to 25ºF lower than air above nearby blacktop. We intuitively know the value of tree shade when we search for the shade of a tree in the desert-like expanse of an asphalt parking lot.

If you want to shade a particular portion of your house during the summer, such as a deck or porch, remember that the sun tracks from the northeast to the northwest in the summer.

Thus, if your deck is on the west side of your house and you desire afternoon shade, then you must place the tree on the southwest side of the deck during the hottest part of the day.

Shade trees should be planted mainly to the south and west sides of the house. Publications that cite the benefits of shade trees often suggest planting trees about 15 to 20 feet from a house to cast shade on the house. This recommendation is effective in shading the house, and will result in less need for air-conditioning.

In midsummer, a 50-foot tree will cast a 50-ft long shadow at 3-4pm. However, if a 50-foot tall tree placed 20 feet from a house falls towards the house, then the top 30 feet of the tree will hit the house. Thus, the advantage of tree shade versus the liability of a tree falling on a house must be carefully deliberated. A potential solution to minimize the liability issue is to place small to medium size trees (less than 50 feet (cont. on page 48)

Turn your spyglass to the Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit for special programs in cooperation with the NC Maritime Museum. The exhibit features a realistic reproduction of the underwater archeological site thought to be the remains of Blackbeard’s flagship. This summer, the museum opened a special exhibit on the excavation of the wreck, the artifacts recovered and what they say about life on board – and on land – in the 18th century.

Like many others of less renown, the shipwreck serves as an artificial reef on the smooth ocean bottom off the North Carolina coast. The Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit features a marine community that would typically congregate around a near-shore shipwreck.

Calls of the Wild Get in tune with the croaks and calls of native frogs and toads at the new On the Edge exhibit in the Mountain Gallery.

In an amphibian version of caller ID, a touch screen activates the sounds made by various species.

In addition to these familiar backyard bug-eaters, On the Edge also features salamanders, newts and other amphibians.

The exhibit highlights the important roles these little creatures play in their ecosystems, the perils they face and how we can help them.

T O W N Meeting Vision for Atlantic Beach MAYOR TRACE COOPER PRESENTED the results of approximately 600 responses to the citizen survey taken since January of this year. He referred to it as an “old-new” vision as many would like to see the town appear as it did in the past. The general feeling seemed to favor this look and most did not want to see a radical change.

The survey pointed out that people saw Atlantic Beach as “unique” and Cooper said they would have to “better this quality” and learn to market it as well. He commented that the town had already gone into action on many initiatives including the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), the land use plan and the park master, stormwater and capital improvement plans. He also mentioned the bike/pedestrian plan and beach renourishment.

“All of these are great plans and will do great things,” he said, “But, we need a master plan in order to prioritize and point us in one direction.” He noted that the town needed a path to follow now and a guide for the future. People saw family entertainment as a major priority and noted that they came to the area for the beach and its activities, such as fishing. They liked the “small town” atmosphere, which was not “too commercial” and no high rises in the area. This sentiment went handin-hand with comments that people liked the fact that Atlantic Beach is “not too crowded,” “it’s quiet” and above all “it is safe.”

Most enjoyed the restaurants and would like to see more places for adults to enjoy in the evening. Overall, the survey pointed out that people expressed a sense of safety for themselves and their children, along with enjoying the friendliness of the local population.

Another priority focused on the appearance of the Causeway and the streetscape in general. Cooper showed slides of various locations, noting the Causeway would look much better with landscaping and attractive signage. He also mentioned the Circle and the frustration expressed with a lack of progress there.

In summary, Cooper said the survey pointed to the town enhancing “a family atmosphere,” increasing areas to walk and ride bicycles, beautifying the Causeway with landscaping, providing better water and beach access, and overseeing the quality of development. Council and staff will take the results of the survey in order to craft a vision statement and define objectives in the weeks ahead.

Recycling Program Norma Yanez, government contracts manager with Waste Industries, reviewed with the town council the existing recycling program for the town. Residents paying for refuse service already have available a once-per-week, curb-side recycling service utilizing 16-gallon green containers. The town also has an igloo-style recycling center available for the public located at the western side of the Atlantic Station Shopping Center near Michaelangelo’s Pizza.

Although the igloo does not have signage, Yanez said she can provide the town with decals. Yanez commented that the recycling program is widely used in Atlantic Beach, although greater marketing efforts would inform the public of what is already in use.

She provided a copy of a 3x8-inch water bill information insert, suitable for placing on a refrigerator, which has site information along with a list of recyclable items.

Along with this, Yanez suggested providing information on the town’s website and Facebook page. She added that all condos in Atlantic Beach have recycling programs with the exception of Sands Villa and Tar Landing and offered to speak with staff at these locations about potentially adding a recycling contract.

Yanez also commented about the problems encountered by beach towns with a transient population during the summer season and how awareness must be raised.

“Although not as yet enforced at landfills, it is the law,” she said. “Sooner or later, [people] will have to do something about [recycling], whether they like it or not.”

Town Manager David Walker remarked that staff will be researching the costs of

making magnets that include general recycling details along with town hall contact information for general distribution.

New Intern Walker introduced Nick Geis who will assist town staff on multiple projects during the summer. A student at UNC-Chapel Hill’s master in public administration (MPA) program, Geis holds a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University. He will serve as an intern with the town through Aug. 12.

Citizens Comment John Lotspih requested that the town council consider placing a low-speed limit or “children playing” sign along Henderson Boulevard. He noted that a number of visitors were not aware of the pedestrian and bicycle traffic, which poses potential safety hazards to all in the area.

Jane Gilliam, a teacher from West Carteret High School, requested consideration for a donation from the town toward the Class of 2011 graduation celebration – an alcohol and substance free event – providing families with the knowledge that their graduate is safely having fun.

Pace Winstead raised concerns about the movie, “Jaws” – one of the town’s free summer movie events. Mayor Cooper, who commented that he, too, initially felt skeptical, explained that the movie has proven extremely popular at other beach towns and a summer favorite. Cooper intends to incorporate a shark educational session hosted by the NC Aquarium staff from Pine Knoll Shores just before the viewing.

Other Business Walker also gave a brief report on the paid parking program which has generated more than $8,000 in revenue in its first two weekends. Daily paid parking operations will run from Friday, May 27 through Labor Day. Free summer movies began on June 1 and will continue each Wednesday through Aug. 31. The town will also celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks display on Sunday, July 3, at 9pm.

M AY O R ’ S Notes Surveying the Future of Atlantic Beach

Mayor Trace Cooper EARLIER THIS YEAR at our annual planning retreat the town council and I discussed the town’s need for additional long-range strategic planning. Over the past few years we have been very active in planning for the future with the implementation of a unified development ordinance, the creation of a park master plan, the execution of an existing storm water plan, the development of a capital improvement plan among other planning efforts. But, in an environment where budgets are tight and we are not able to fund all of our projects at once, we need a well-defined long-range plan or vision for Atlantic Beach to help us organize our specific planning projects and prioritize our funding and our efforts.

Naturally, this vision should come from our citizens. The first step in defining it was to issue a survey to get your input. The survey was mailed out earlier this year and was also available online through our website and Facebook page. Several hundred people took the survey, which was a very solid response rate.

We asked several questions in the survey to learn what kind of town our citizens want Atlantic Beach to be in the coming years; I’ll summarize the responses. Although there were not any major surprises in the responses, the surveys did show that there are

some clear priorities for our citizens. This information will be very helpful as we better define our vision statement and add some detail to our strategic planning.

We asked what people liked most about Atlantic Beach. The top answer, by far, was the beaches, water and boating. The next most popular answer was the small town atmosphere.

We asked what needed improvement in Atlantic Beach. The most popular response was that we need more family-oriented entertainment. The next most popular answer was that we need to improve the look of the causeway as you enter town and otherwise improve the appearance of our streetscapes. The need to improve the Circle was the third most popular choice.

When we asked people to rank how certain words fit their vision of the future of Atlantic Beach, the most popular choices were “safe,” “family-oriented,” “beachy” and “welcoming.”

We also asked a couple of specific, project-oriented, questions and learned that more than 70 percent of respondents believe the town should continue to fund recreational activities and that more than 75 percent of respondents think that it is time to build a new municipal complex.

The responses to the survey were very much in line with what the council and I have been hearing from citizens for the past few years and provided a nice affirmation that our recent efforts to control growth through the UDO and to provide more family entertainment are steps in the right direction. But, we clearly have more work to do and the information provided by this survey will be invaluable in crafting a vision statement for the town and providing specific strategic goals moving forward. Tidal Tidbits How to Grow a Tomato

By Charlie Nardozzi TOMATOES ARE FAR and away the most popular vegetable grown by home gardeners. Who can resist the vast array of sizes, shapes, colors, and flavors of hybrid and heirloom tomato varieties? Plus, there’s nothing like walking through your garden and munching on your own home grown fruits in the middle of summer.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to growing tomatoes.

1. Select the Variety – There are hundreds of hybrid and heirloom tomato varieties to choose from. In general, hybrid varieties are more uniform, vigorous, and disease resistant.

They grow well almost anywhere in the country. Heirloom varieties offer more variety of fruit shapes, color and flavor, but sometimes are only regionally adapted. It’s best to grow some of each, trying new varieties each year to see which grow best in your climate. For containers, choose dwarf varieties or determinate varieties. Indeterminate varieties will grow until the weather, insects, diseases or you stop them. They require the most support but will produce the most fruit. For kids, grow cherry tomatoes for a sweet and plentiful treat.

2- to 3-feet apart in the raised beds. If your seedlings are tall and leggy, bury the stem to the first set of true leaves. Tomatoes have the ability to root along the stem; deeply set plants will be more productive. In containers, mix 3 parts potting soil with 1 part compost and plant one tomato per 5-gallon sized container.

5. Keep ‘em Up – Indeterminate tomatoes can grow to be huge plants. Plants trellised off the ground are more productive and have less disease and insect problems on the fruits than plants left to lie on the ground. Use homemade or commercial tomato cages, ladders, or stakes to train them off the ground.

Dwarf varieties don’t need support, but determinate varieties do benefit from being trellised.

6. Fertilize, Water and Weed – Keep plants well watered, especially when fruit is forming. If the soil moisture fluctuates too much, your fruits may develop blossom end rot (the rotting of the stem end of the fruit). If you haven’t used plastic mulch, consider mulching with straw to keep the soil evenly moist.

Mulch also prevents weeds from growing. Fertilize monthly with a handful of an organic 5-5-5 fertilizer sprinkled around the base of the plants to keep the plants productive.

7. Control Pests – Watch out for a variety of pests on your tomato plants. Diseases such as wilt, virus and blight can also cause problems. Select disease resistant varieties. Resistant varieties have the letters of the disease they are resistant to after their name, such as V and F for resistance to verticillium and fusarium wilt.

8. Harvest – The more you pick, the more fruits will be produced. Allow the fruits to ripen on the vine to their mature color for the best flavor. Collect mature fruits to can or freeze, preserving the flavor of the harvest into the winter. If you still have many green fruits on your plant at the end of summer, prune off the top the plant and remove newly forming flowers and small fruits. This will send more of the plant’s energy into maturing the remaining fruits. Harvest before a frost.

2. Start Seeds Early Indoors – Unless you’re buying transplants at the local garden center, you’ll need to start your tomato seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date in your area.

3. Raise and Warm the Soil – On all but sandy soils, create 8- to 10-inch tall raised beds to grow your tomatoes. Two weeks before transplanting outdoors, cover the beds with red plastic mulch. The color red increases tomato yields by up to 20 percent. Plus it warms the soil, conserves soil moisture, and prevents weeds from growing. In extreme southern areas, use straw mulch or white plastic instead of red plastic to keep the soil from overheating. If using drop irrigation or soaker hoses to water your plants, lay these hoses under the plastic mulch before laying it down.

C L U B News Looking Toward a ‘Better Life, Brighter Future’ THE PINE KNOLL SHORES WOMEN’S CLUB met on May 20, 9:30am at town hall. President Barbara Bagby welcomed members and honored guests Connie Browne and Jo Swann, founding life members of the Women’s Club. Members enjoyed delicious refreshments provided by hostesses Teresa King, Marian Goetzinger and Barbara Baccollo presented on a patrioticallythemed tablescape in anticipation of Memorial Day. A special presentation was made to Reid Strader and BJ Bagby, spouses of club members Barbara Bagby and Linda Strader, who bought, prepared and presided over our fabulous smoked and sweet BBQ that was sold at the PKS Tree City Fair on April 30. Thanks to these dedicated chefs, the Women’s Club made a profit at the fair which will help fund future Women’s Club projects. Barbara and Linda thanked all club volunteers who manned club tables, served food and provided information to prospective members.

Vice President Bonnie Ferneau introduced Leisa Smith Barefoot, director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina, who provided a compelling narrative of her organization’s mission. Through a variety of core programs, the Boys and Girls Club engages young people in activities that enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

The three clubs, located in Beaufort, Havelock and Morehead City, provide life-enhancing opportunities to over 900 youth ages 6-18 in five diverse program activities. They focus on character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts and sports, fitness and recreation. Following a video entitled “Better Life, Brighter Future,” Barefoot concluded her talk with a reminder of the importance of youth to our own well-being as a nation. “Our youth,” she said,” are 20 percent of our population, but 100 percent of our future.”

In honor of Memorial Day, Barbara Baccollo, discussing famous women, spoke of the heroic exploits of Col. Ruby Bradley, the most decorated woman in US military history. Col. Bradley, born in 1907, entered the Army Nurse Corps in 1934. While serving in the Philippines, she was captured by the Japanese following the attack on Pearl Harbor and spent several years at the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila where she and several other imprisoned nurses earned the title “Angels in Fatigues.” Her heroism while at the prisoner-of-war camp is legendary. She

returned to the battlefield in 1950 during the Korean War as chief nurse for the 171st Evacuation Hospital where she supervised over 500 Army nurses. In 1958 she was awarded the rank of colonel and after three decades in the military she retired in 1963 after amassing over 34 medals and citations for bravery. She died in 2002 at age 94.

C L U B News Garden Club Reflects on Year’s Accomplishments THE EMERALD ISLE Garden Club was very busy and eventful this past year. They held their meetings at the homes of Cindy Canipe, Shirley Brilakis and Dot Igram. They also held some of the meeting at the Emerald Isle Recreation Center, Emerald Isle Town Hall, Lands End Club House and the Carolina Home and Garden Shop. The club thanks all those who hosted.

The club has four new members: Linda Hughes, Mary Loney, Diana O’Beck and Judy Whatley. Whatley finished the Master’s Gardener class this year and the club reached its goal to have 25 members.

The club’s programs for the past year involved exchanging plants with each member. Educational coordinator for the Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter, Dana Henderson spoke on how to attract birds to your garden. Albert of Albert’s on Salter Path Road, taught club members how to design and make topiaries. Jodie Willis Ballou from Morehead City gave an interesting program on “A Garden Whimsy,” discussing the use of herbs in your garden for cooking and live wreaths. THE JULY 4TH HOLIDAY lures many tourists to the Crystal Coast. Families and friends flock down to the beach to celebrate Independence Day in a variety of ways. An entire weekend of starspangled activities is planned, so wear your red, white and blue and enjoy the fun!

Before the light show at night, spend the days on the Crystal Coast beaches. Bring your sunscreen, cooler and beach towel – all the ingredients necessary for a total relaxation session! In need of a little more adventure? Discover plenty of kayak and boat rental services and charter fishing boats for those seeking pleasurable activities on the water. There are several public boat ramps around the county, the newest one located in Emerald Isle adjacent to Chapel by the Sea. Underwater enthusiasts will enjoy the annual 4th of July Underwater Bike Race with a bike decorating contest and potluck dinner (call Debby Boyce for details, 252-728-2265). 2011 Hurricane Season Preview JUNE 1 SERVES as an important date for Bogue Banks and just about all beaches along the southeast Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico (GOM) seaboards as we usher in the annual hurricane season, which will continue to run through Nov. 30. The 2011 hurricane season of course follows closely on the heels of the 2010 season, which despite no US land-falling hurricanes was a near record year – accentuated climatologically by tying the record for third for the highest amount of named cyclones in a year (19 compared to 28) and tying the record for second for the most hurricanes in a single year (12 compared 15).

So what’s in store for 2011? First and foremost, most experts agree the Atlantic Ocean basin continues to be in the middle of a heightened trend of tropical cyclone activity compliments of cyclical ocean-atmosphere interactions coupled with possible impacts from warming climate and seas (there’s still a lot of debate on this). On a finer scale, warmer than average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Atlantic and a waning La Niña are providing enough fuel for cyclone development (warm water) and a favorable atmospheric environment in place, respectively, that have forecasters predicting a possibly “above normal” hurricane season for 2011.

Note: In general La Niña signals cooler waters in the equatorial Pacific and triggers atmospheric conditions conducive for cyclone development in the Atlantic and GOM. El Niño conversely includes warmer Pacific waters and adverse atmospheric conditions in the Atlantic and GOM.

Hurricane Vocabulary There are plenty of terms associated with the hurricane season - cyclones, tropical storms, subtropical storms, hurricanes and more; and therefore it’s worth our effort to introduce some basic hurricane terminology below.

Tropical cyclone – Warm-core, atmospheric closed circulation rotating counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

Tropical storm – A tropical cyclone with a maximum sustained surface wind speed 52

ranging from 39 mph to 73 mph using the US 1-minute average.

Hurricane - A tropical cyclone with a maximum sustained surface wind speed reaching 74 mph or more.

Saffir Simpson Scale – A scale including a 1 to 5 rating based upon wind speeds, again utilizing the US 1-minute average. A Category 1 hurricane has winds ranging from 74 to 95 miles per hour (mph); category 2 ranges from 96 to 100 mph; category 3 ranges from 111 to 130 mph; category 4 ranges from 131 to 155 mph; and a category 5 hurricane has sustained winds exceeding 155 mph.

Major Hurricane – A hurricane reaching category 3 or higher on the Saffir Simpson Scale. Interestingly, category 5 hurricanes very rarely make landfall while maintaining their category 5 intensity – only three have ever made landfall in the US – the Labor Day hurricane (1935), Camille (1969) and Andrew (1992).

Now to account for some of the weather oddballs, we also need to include: Extratropical Storm - A cold-core atmospheric cyclone deriving its energy when cold and warm air masses interact, not as part of the positive feedback loop identified with tropical storms as warm, moist air rises causing continual heat exchange. Unlike tropical storms, extratropical storms can have one or more fronts connected to them, and can occur over land or ocean. Extratropical cyclones can have winds ranging to levels associated with a tropical depression, or as strong as a hurricane (examples include blizzards and nor’easters) which often form in winter and fall months off the mid-Atlantic and drift slowly along the north Atlantic seaboard and eventually east. If it drifts back west towards land, it is called a retrograded nor’easter.

Subtropical Storm - Occurs if waters under an extratropical cyclone are warm, followed by thunderstorms that gradually build inside the storm. The storm core may subsequently and gradually go from cold to warm, and the storm will be called subtropical.

Note: Both subtropical and extratropical cyclones have the highest winds and thunderstorms a good distance away from the center, and may have frontal boundaries associated with the systems. The two (extra- and subtropical) are usually broader systems than a tropical system, but the subtropical system will produce more rain compared to an extratropical one.

What to Expect If you’re a frequent reader of the Island Review, then you will already know that our preference is to review the predictions produced by groups that make not just their forecasts public, but verify their prediction skill in the public arena as well. This really leaves us with; (1) the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University, (2) the University College London, UK for Tropical Storm Risk and (3) our federal voice for climatology/meteorology matters, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). We then take these groups’ last prediction before or near when the hurricane season starts and begin to crunch the numbers.

As the accompanying prediction summary chart indicates, we could expect 15 total named cyclones, eight of which will generate into hurricanes, with five of these becoming major hurricanes (on average).

The average of the predictions result in a forecast of an “above normal” hurricane season, which is actually determined by looking at a term we haven’t discussed yet - the

Accumulated Cyclone Energy Index (ACE Index). The ACE Index is simply a measurement taking a storm’s wind speed strength for each six-hour period of its existence into account. The larger the ACE Index value, the more active the season. The ACE Index is actually one of the more revealing parameters we can use and serves as a better barometer of whether or not a hurricane season is truly “active” or not. This past decade has some great examples to support this assertion.

For instance as mentioned earlier in this article, 2010 was a near record year in terms of named cyclones with an ACE Index that was 163 – the average ACE Index is 96. The year prior (2009) possessed a dramatically low value of 51 – only 14 hurricane seasons had a lower ACE Index than that value. There were 12 cyclones in 2009 – most were relatively weak with the exception of three hurricanes, of which two became major. There were no cyclones (tropical storms or hurricanes) that made landfall along the Atlantic U.S. seaboard.

On the flip side, 2005 had an ACE Index of 248 – the highest on record and was punctuated by more tropical storms, total hurricanes, and category 5 hurricanes than in any season previously recorded; and included Ophelia for North Carolina and the infamous major hurricanes of Katrina, Wilma and Rita in GOM. Table 2 includes the ACE Index for the past eight years and a few notes justifying the value.

In closing, the ACE Index is also used to determine whether a hurricane season is termed as “below normal” (<68), “near normal” (68–106), “above ACE YEA R N o te s normal” (106–168) or even In d e x Tied for third-m os t m os t c y c lones for a s eas on at 19, and tied for s ec ond-m os t hurric anes for a “hyperactive” (>168). Unfortunately, it only takes one cyclone to make or break a hurricane season, with 1992 being a perfect example – seven named cyclones, four of which were hurricanes, with one of those classified as major, and an ACE index value of 75. Sounds like a very quiet year, except the one major hurricane was Andrew, which struck Florida and was the costliest natural disaster in US history until Katrina in 2005.

This underscores the need to be prepared for each and every hurricane season regardless if it is an active season or not.

Also with an above normal year predicted for 2011, the potential cumulative effects to our beaches of multiple cyclones impacting our area is also something we’ll be monitoring.

The grand opening was well attended and the first fish was caught in probably less than 10 minutes by someone that had fished the old Jennette’s Pier for many years. The grand opening provided a great strength test to see how much weight the pier could hold. I doubt if there will ever be that many people on the pier again.

So Ok, “Where do we stand on the pier in Emerald Isle?”

The plans should be complete in “late summer/early fall” of this year with documents ready to go out for bid. The project cost is estimated to be $15+ million and before going out for bid, we need a source of funds. Obviously, with governments at all levels having financial issues at this time, it will be some time before the aquarium is able to secure the funds, and your guess as to when that will be is as good as mine. I surely hope sooner rather than later. Jennette’s Pier will be enjoyed by many for many years to come.

TURTLE TRACKS Emerald Isle Off to Slow Start for 2011 THE EMERALD ISLE SEA TURTLE Protection Program got off to a very slow start in the 2011 turtle season. Through the month of May, there was a single small false crawl and no nests.

This is only the second time in the past 11 years when there has not been any nesting activity in May. One consequence of this late start is that visitors will have to wait until at least the very last week in July to see any hatchlings.

Those desiring to have the possibility of seeing an earlier hatching event will have to go to Fort Macon or Atlantic Beach to the east, or Topsail Beach to the south. As of June 1, there had been only 59 nests reported along the entire coast; Cape Lookout and Bald Head Island each had 10 nests and Oak Island had five.

About 50 percent of the DNA samples acquired from the 2010 nests (417 of 881) have been processed. The data indicates that those 417 nests were the result of 178 separate female sea turtles. Only 18 of the 417 were single nesters; the others all resulted from multiple nesting efforts.

The multiple nesters laid an average of three nests each and the average time interval between nesting efforts was 13 days.

The maximum number of nests laid by any mother was five and the maximum number of beaches employed as nesting sites by one female was four. The closest proximity of a mother laying at least two nests was about 70 feet and the greatest distance between a mother’s multiple nests was about 400 miles.

This new DNA data is beginning to clarify our understanding of sea turtle nesting and will be most useful in efforts to conserve and protect sea turtles. If Emerald Isles’ 2010 mothers were average in behavior, it took 10 mothers to create the 29 nests located in 2010. Now the volunteers are hoping that those same mothers or 10 others will begin visiting the Emerald Isle beaches.

Crooked Capers Will the Real Reptiles Please Stand Up Police responding to a potential alligator in Independence, Mo., may be the butt of jokes this week. Advised by wildlife officials to shoot the animal if they felt it posed a danger, the Keystone Cops used a rifle to take two head-shots at the wily beast before realizing it was a concrete lawn ornament.

Youngsters playing in the woods spotted the reptile in a nearby yard and quickly called to alert police in this suburban Kansas City neighborhood. A spokesman for the police said it was partially hidden amidst weeds and admits that with the sun going down it looked quite real.

The homeowner, it was reported, said the gator was meant to scare off children.

You Are What You Tweet Now that social media websites are carving our words into the annals of history it’s becoming increasingly easy for them to come back and bite us on the backside as one Malaysian blogger recently found.

In an unusual settlement agreement, social activist Fahmi Fadzil agreed last month to apologize 100 times on Twitter as penance in a defamation case. Fadzil had some colorful words to say on his Twitter page about a magazine run by BluInc Media, claiming they had mistreated a pregnant friend of his who was employed by them.

While Fadzil tweeted an apology within hours of making the defamatory comments, that wasn’t enough to appease the magazine conglomerate. The company’s lawyers immediately requested financial damages and apologies in area newspapers.

The case was settled at the end of May with the writer agreeing to 54

apologize 100 times over a three-day period on Twitter. Lawyers declined to say who suggested the terms.

“I’ve DEFAMED BluInc Media and Female Magazine. My tweets on their (human resource) policies are untrue. I retract those words and hereby apologize,” was posted on Twitter every 30 minutes beginning May 26. Fadzil has more than 4,200 followers.

Electronic Vigilantism San Franciscan Joshua Kaufman took matters into his own hands when police were too busy to help him track down his stolen laptop. Using Twitter, a blog and theft-tracking software he had installed, the jilted computer owner was able to capture screen shots and images of the culprit logging on to his Mac. When he didn’t get the desired result from taking the images to police, Kaufman set up a blog on Twitter, aptly named “This Guy Has My MacBook.” There, he posted grainy photos of a man curled up on the couch sleeping and propped up on pillows, shirtless, working away at the keyboard. Among the photos captured, Kaufman was able to see an email that contained the name of a cab company and seemed to contain employment information for the recipient.

Police still refused to help – but as the amount of information Kaufman gathered grew, so did its online presence. The blog went viral, with friends reposting the information on their own pages until it not only grabbed the attention of the media – but the police as well.

On May 31, police arrested Muthanna Aldebashi, 27, an area cab driver.

B O O K bag North Carolina’s Ocean Fishing Piers

By Al Baird THERE IS NOTHING MORE REPRESENTATIVE of our North Carolina coast than the fishing piers which have extended out into the ocean since our beaches became developed and frequented by eager visitors. Al Baird’s recently published history of the ocean fishing piers is both informative and nostalgic. Since many of the piers are now gone, this is a needed reminder of what once was.

This small book is packed with anecdotes, photos and statistics of the piers which have offered so much pleasure to so many for decades. Baird is a proponent for saving the remaining piers and for building others. He has organized, corresponded and fought for the preservation of this part of coastal life. He has tracked down the old-timers and included their memories in his book so that the lore of the piers will be remembered.

From the oldest pier, the one at Kure Beach, to the newest ones proposed, Baird has covered the subject well. The first on Bogue Banks was the Triple S Fishing Pier, built in 1952 and torn down in 2006 to be replaced by cottages. The Emerald Isle Pier was built in 1954 and fell to the ravages of hurricanes Bertha and Fran in 1996. A concrete pier is planned for the site by the NC Aquariums.

Many visitors to the Crystal Coast remember the Sportsman’s Pier, built in 1956 and closed in 2006 with a sign that read, “Sportsman’s Pier, You Should Have Been Here Yesterday.” The pier was originally called Finch’s Pier.

The Oceanana Pier at Atlantic Beach still stands and was built in 1959. It is a part of the Oceanana Resort. In that same year, 1959, the Bogue Inlet Pier was built, and it still stands today.

The Morehead Ocean Pier was built in 1960 and now

extends into the sea at the Sheraton Hotel. Perhaps one of the best loved piers by fishermen for years was the Iron Steamer Pier built in 1960 over the site where the SS Pevensey was sunk during the Civil War. It was prized by anglers because the wreck was believed to be a draw for fish. The Iron Steamer was closed and its life ended in 2005.

Of course Baird chronicles the life of all the piers on our coast, not just those of Bogue Banks.

He also catalogues the relation of the piers to the hurricanes which have hit. He writes that since 1996 our section of the coast has been “hurricane alley.”

Between hurricanes Bertha and Fran half of the piers on the Crystal Coast were heavily damaged. Coupled with the “rising tide of real estate” the piers became economically unsound.

This book is also a chronicle of fishing on the coast with accounts of the sizable catches recorded on the numerous piers.

The many photos show the piers in their heydays and some depict them after destructive forces hit.

The final chapter addresses the future of pier fishing in North Carolina with the hope of public funding for future piers as has been found for Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head.

It is easy to see that Al Baird has written a labor of love. He has campaigned for the life of this coastal treasure and concludes the book with this wisdom, “It is more complicated than selling worms and stapling a pass to the next Fisherman’s hat.”
