What If? By Randall Munroe MILLIONS OF PEOPLE each week read Randall Munroe’s webcomic where he entertains strange questions about science, technology and language. In “What If?” his bestselling book, Munroe now has reached another large segment of society with his well- researched answers to fascinating queries. A former NASA robotic engineer, the author even has had an asteroid named after him. What if everyone actually had only one soul mate, a random person somewhere in the world? Munroe answers that question by assuming your soul mate is alive now and close to your own age. He calculates that the odds are one out of 10,000 you would find true love. He says the only possible way to improve those odds would be a massive conveyor belt where everyone could pass by each other in order to make eye contact with your soul mate. If every human somehow simply disappeared from the face of the Earth, how long would it take before the last

artificial light source would go out? Munroe says that most lights would not last long because power plants would shut down. Battery powered lights would all be off within a decade or two, except that in the Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford University “a battery-powered bell has been ringing since the year 1840.” These are the kinds of fascinating tidbits readers will find in this book. The final answer to this question is that centuries from now most toxic waste will still be shining. There are a number of questions in this book which the author does not attempt to answer because they are too weird: Would it be possible to get your teeth to such a cold temperature that they would shatter upon drinking a hot cup of coffee? Or perhaps, if a Venus fly trap could eat a person, about how long would it take for the human to be fully dejuiced and absorbed? The range of questions found here is one of the amazing aspects of this treatise. Randall Munroe is a fun guy with both an inventive imagination and a good handle on science and statistics. He says in the introduction that “trying to thoroughly answer a stupid question can take you to some pretty interesting places.” Readers will be verbally transported to those places and wonder how in the world they got there. It is possible that readers will find a question they have thought of and now have an answer like which U.S. state is actually flown over the most? North Carolina is close to the top. Maybe you have wondered how fast you can take a speed bump and still live or how many unique tweets are possible. It is more likely you will find questions here which you would never ask but now can’t help but read on to find out how there could be an answer. Curt Finch Emerald Isle Books

Sweet Rest, Happy Guests I FIRST SLEPT on the phenomenal Westin Hotel’s “Heavenly Bed” almost 14 years ago. Since it was just a few weeks after the horrendous 9/11 terrorist attack and I was staying on the 22nd floor of a high rise hotel in downtown Atlanta, it needed to be heavenly to help me sleep! The “Heavenly Bed” is a triple-sheeted cloud of marshmallow perfection that has now been widely imitated throughout the hotel industry. But what are your rental guests expecting when the lights go out and they hope to be soothed to sleep by the hush, hush of the waves murmuring ashore? Springtime on the island is the perfect time to schedule a professional deep clean for your vacation rental home. But prior to the arrival of your housekeeping team, you owe it to your rental guests to do a comprehensive evaluation of your bedding. Remove each layer, and do a pass/fail on each item using a very critical eye. Is the bedspread, comforter or quilt deteriorated from sun and wear and tear, or does it just need a good cleaning? Age matters as well because soft goods are not made to be as durable. As they are the fashion statement for your bedrooms, make sure they look attractive and inviting, never disreputable or as one online reviewer said about a low budget motel, “creepy.” Pillows, pillow protectors, mattress pads and blankets also need to pass muster prior to rental season. Stains that

cannot be removed by washing are simply unacceptable. Blankets may be clean, but if they are torn or frayed, then place them in the discard pile for the local thrift re-sale store. When bedspreads, pillows, blankets and mattress pads are replaced by new items, remove these items; do not store them at your rental home “just in case.” Instead, have a neatly folded blanket in excellent condition in each bedroom closet plus, at minimum, one extra pillow. Every pillow should be covered by a fresh pillow protector that may be laundered as necessary during the rental season. Now we are down to the bare essentials, the mattress and box spring, truly the real secret to the Heavenly Bed. Westin’s medium-firm confection delights and yours should as well. Every bedroom in your vacation rental home should have mattresses of the same high quality as the master bedroom where you sleep. Medium-firm will be pleasing to the majority of your rental guests and the pillow top versions offer an extra layer of comfort that says you care about your rental guests and of course, your visiting family and friends as well. A cranky, sleep deprived guest is not a pleasant guest, whether they are friends vacationing with you or renters paying a few thousand dollars a week for the privilege of staying in your island home. A good night’s sleep will make all the difference between the guest who dreams of coming back to the Crystal Coast for their next vacation, or the guest who remembers the nightmare of sleepless nights and vows never to return. The Crystal Coast is a dream come true for our visitors – your beautiful bedding and comfy mattress will make it sweet dreams for them, too! county perspective

Leadership Class Learns about ‘Banksology’ THE 35 PARTICIPANTS in Leadership Carteret 2015 are looking forward to completing their 10-week whirlwind tour of Carteret County, and graduation ceremonies are scheduled on March 18 at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast in Pine Knoll Shores. The program is offered annually to up-and-coming community leaders by the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce. Two of the sessions are devoted to local governments, operations and attractions on Bogue Banks. The first stop was the Atlantic Beach Town Hall, where Mayor Trace Cooper talked about the town’s vision for the future. Efforts to develop “branding” for Atlantic Beach are well under way, including the establishment of a new logo. His marketing lesson in a nutshell was: “We’re a classic beach town, and what we’re selling is summer family vacations in Atlantic Beach,” he said. Two key elements to the town’s future success are to provide more family entertainment opportunities and to improve the visual appearance of the town. “How things look matters,” Mayor Cooper said. The gateway project to create a park environment on the old bridge abutment property, and continued development of the Town Park will be nice additions for families to enjoy. The AB Beach Music Festival on May 16 is an example of townsponsored activities to help build visitation during the “shoulder seasons” outside of the peak-season summer months.

Cap’n Jim Willis, who is Atlantic Beach’s “charter citizen,” covered the historical highlights from Atlantic Beach’s early years for the Leadership class. His lecture on “banksology” was peppered with humor and candid comments about the struggles the community has endured over the years related to dredging of the Morehead City Harbor and beach nourishment. Years ago, Cap’n Jim overcame stiff political opposition to win the battle to place the dredged sand on the beaches of Fort Macon State Park and Atlantic Beach, rather than have the US Army Corps of Engineers to dump the sand offshore where it would have no benefit. For centuries, scientists had thought that migrating sand moved west to east, from Bogue Banks to Shackleford Banks. However, Cap’n Jim proved them wrong. His meticulous data and charts proved the sand actually moves in the opposite direction, from east to west. “Bogue Banks gets its sand naturally from Shackleford,” he said. “If they had built those Beaufort Inlet jetties back in the 1930s like they planned, Atlantic Beach would be starved to death today with no sand. I preached and preached against it.” Coming up on the Leadership Carteret agenda are visits to Emerald Isle and Pine Knoll Shores to meet with town managers in those communities who will comment on contemporary issues of concern to citizens, seasonal residents and tourists. Special thanks to Transportation Impact and all of our great local sponsors for helping to make this event better than ever. Please note that, despite earlier reports to the contrary, strollers ARE permitted at the St. Patrick’s Festival.

New Lights Added Along Coast Guard Road, New Bike Path

A total of 18 new street lights have been added along Coast Guard Road and the new bike path in this area. The new lights create a safer night-time environment for motor vehicles, bicyclists, walkers, and runners. This effort was led by the Town’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and the new lights were made possible by their diligent fundraising efforts and the generosity of many in our community. Thank you!

Carteret County Releases New Tax Values

The Carteret County Tax Office recently released the new 2015 tax values for all of Carteret County, including Emerald Isle. Overall, the total tax value in Emerald Isle decreased by approximately 9.6% - from approximately $3 billion to a little more than $2.7 billion. Approximately 56% of the properties in Emerald Isle decreased by more than 9.6%, while approximately 44% decreased by less than 9.6% or experienced an increase in tax value. The board of commissioners will be working diligently over the next few months on the town’s FY 1516 budget, and will establish a new tax rate in June 2015. In FY 14-15 (the current year), the town’s 14 cent General Fund tax rate yields total property tax revenues of approximately $4.2 million. In order to generate the same $4.2 million in FY 15-16 (next year), the town’s General Fund tax rate would need to be somewhere between 15.5 cents and 16 cents (the “revenue-neutral” tax rate). If the board establishes a “revenue-neutral” tax rate, every property owner whose tax value decreased by more than 9.6% would actually see a slight decrease in their annual town tax bill. Every property owner whose tax value decreased by less than 9.6% or increased would see a slight increase in their annual town tax bill. In the vast majority of cases, the amount of any increase or decrease in the annual Town tax bill is likely to be relatively minor if a “revenue-neutral” tax rate is adopted. If you disagree with your new tax value, please contact the Carteret County Tax Office at 252-7288494. County staff will be happy to answer your questions and/or assist you with the informal or formal appeals process.

Insurance Companies File Appeal, Again Seek Higher Premiums

In December, the NC Commissioner of Insurance announced that a requested homeowners insurance rate increase had been denied, and he actually ordered a slight decrease in rates for coastal areas, including Emerald Isle. The town was very pleased with the commissioner’s decision, as the town and others have been working hard in recent years to advocate for a fairer rate structure for homeowners insurance premiums. Unfortunately, the NC Rate Bureau, the entity that represents the insurance companies, has now filed an appeal of the commissioner’s decision, claiming that current premiums are inadequate. Homeowners in Emerald Isle and other coastal areas already pay homeowners insurance premiums that are as much as five times higher than other parts of North Carolina! The NC Court of Appeals is expected to hear this case later in 2015 or 2016.

2015 Controlled Deer Hunt Now Complete

The Emerald Isle Police Dept. has completed the town’s 2015 controlled deer hunt. A total of 50 deer were removed, as recommended and permitted by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to control the overall deer population in Emerald Isle. A total of nearly 800 lbs. of deer meat has been donated to the Hope Mission in Morehead City, where it will help feed the poor in our area. The 2015 controlled deer hunt was conducted during overnight hours (generally between 11pm and 5am on weeknights only) during January. All hunting was completed with bow and arrow. Hunting occurred on town street right of ways, on town-owned property and on private property that specifically granted permission. Public safety is the town’s highest priority, and all hunting was completed under the 26

Construction of New Welcome Center Underway

Construction of the new Welcome Center in Emerald Isle began in mid-January and is progressing nicely thus far. The new Welcome Center is the result of a partnership between the town, the Crystal Coast Tourism Development Authority and NC Dept. of Transportation and is located on the Hwy 58 right of way at the site of the former Merchants Park (a few blocks west of the traffic signal in the middle of Emerald Isle). The new Welcome Center replaces the modular units near the intersection of Hwys 58 and 24, and is conveniently located along the town’s bicycle path. The new building has an attractive coastal design, and is similar in appearance to the town administration building and EMS Station. We hope to help many more visitors and potential visitors learn more about all of the great recreational opportunities in Emerald Isle and Carteret County! The new Welcome Center is expected to open later this summer. (Cont. on page 28)

Parking Lot Improvements Continue

The town’s contractor continues to make good progress on parking lot improvements at the town’s Eastern Ocean Regional Access, the planned site for a future new ocean fishing pier. Significant subsurface storm water management features have been installed, and the attractive paver block parking area is currently under construction. A new wooden walkway to the beach is also planned, along with restroom improvements. All work is expected to be complete by April 1, in time for the 2015 beach season!

Jean Preston Memorial Playground Fundraising

Fundraising efforts continue for the new Sen. Jean Preston Memorial Playground, with nearly $7,000 in hand thus far! The volunteer committee is targeting a total of $75,000 to construct the new playground on town-owned land just west of the public boat ramp facility. The location has a beautiful view of Bogue Sound and will include new playground equipment, a picnic shelter, an open grassy area and additional parking. To contribute to this effort, please visit www.emeraldisle-nc.org/ Playground/default. Additionally, local artist Barry Knauff has donated 3 original paintings to this effort, with proceeds donated to the Jean Preston Memorial Playground. To view and bid on the paintings, please visit www.emeraldisle-nc.org/CommunityNotice/ CommunityNotice%20-%20auction-jeanprestonplayground.

For those seeking less challenging bike outings, there are out and back rides to the Civil War site at Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach (41 miles) and to the NC Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores (25 miles). All three rides will begin at 8am at the Emerald Isle Community Center! To learn more and to register, please visit www. emeraldisle-nc.org/CommunityNotice/CommunityNotice%20%202015BiketheBanks. Proceeds benefit bicycle and pedestrian projects in Emerald Isle!

Party Animals Eno the otter is turning 7 years old. And his roommates, Pungo and Neuse, are now the big one-0, as in 10. At the annual Otter Birthday Bash on March 28, celebrate the furry fun the otters have given Aquarium visitors over the years as well as the conservation success story of their species. Wish the otters a happy birthday in your own words on a giant birthday card, and make otter-oriented crafts. During morning and afternoon programs at their habitat, ask the otter keeper questions about what the otters eat and the “enrichment” activities and objects that pique their natural curiosity. Watch them play with their presents opened during one of the programs, and see how they handle a birthday cake made of ice, frozen fish and other surprises for them to find as the creation thaws. See a slideshow and a video all about Eno, who inspired the annual celebration. Eno came to the Aquarium as an orphaned infant in 2008. In addition to providing the essentials of food and shelter, Aquarium staff helped Eno master swimming and other skills otter mothers normally teach their young. American river otters were once nearly extinct in North Carolina due to overharvesting, habitat destruction and pollution. Conservation measures and reintroduction efforts have boosted the population of the fun-loving creatures statewide. Otter Birthday Bash activities are free with admission or membership

Spring Things A day out of school is good, and spending it at Sea Turtle Camp makes it great. The popularity of the February session

prompted the aquarium to schedule a second camp for the March 16 school holiday. From 8:30am-2:30pm, campers enjoy hands-on opportunities to work with the aquarium’s sea turtle team, caring for weakened baby sea turtles that hatched along the coast last summer and fall. The team also tends to older sea turtles that strand in the winter due to bitter cold. Advance registration is required and Sea Turtle Camps fill quickly, so sign up soon. Winter is on the way out, which means outdoor fun is on its way in. Fishing lessons and kayaking and canoeing programs will resume as weather permits – watch the aquarium website for dates and details on how to register. Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes tours of the aquarium are available five days a week throughout the month. See the food preparation process, the view from above the Living Shipwreck exhibit and sea turtles and other animals in the holding areas. Also check for space in the last Succulent Seafood sessions of the season, and visit local restaurants for tips on preparing the catch of the day. Succulent Seafood and behind-the-scenes tours required advance registration and fees. Dive programs, live animal programs and animal feeding programs are offered daily, free with admission.

Picture This Share those great photos and videos you take of aquarium creatures or your kids entranced at the touch pools. Enter your images in the aquarium’s social media Fan Photo Friday competition. Find the aquarium on Facebook plus Instagram, Twitter and other outlets the easy way – click on the direct links from the Aquarium’s homepage. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is 5 miles west of Atlantic Beach at 1 Roosevelt Blvd., Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512. Hours are 9am-5pm daily. Admission is $10.95 for ages 13-61; $9.95 for age 62 and up and military; $8.95 for ages 3-12; no charge for age 2 and under and NC Aquarium Society members. State taxes apply to admission fees. Irish Eyes Smile on Emerald Isle The family oriented beachfront community of Emerald Isle is a great place to be any time of the year, but it is the only place to be when it comes time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. For 364 days a year, the picturesque town keeps a pretty low profile. Good shopping and restaurants, a beautiful stretch of beach to share with residents and guests and a nice laid-back quality of life. This unassuming beach town with about 4,000 residents pulls out all the stops each March, luring upwards of 30,000 visitors for a day of live music, vendors, amusement rides and merriment. We can expect more of the same from 9am-6pm on Saturday, March 14 as visitors converge on the Emerald Plantation Shopping Center for a full day of family-friendly fun and entertainment. So what’s on tap? Just about everything! Think green – and not the environmental kind. From goofy green hats to polka dot socks, nothing is too silly for the St. Patrick’s Festival. Green tuxedos, flashy glasses, leprechaun costumes, Emerald Isle has seen it all through the years. If green is the color for the day, then festive is certainly the theme. From amusement rides to live music, there is plenty to keep every member of the family busy and happy. One of the many draws for Emerald Isle’s St. Patrick’s Festival

was decided from the beginning, some 23 years ago. Everything sold at the festival is handmade or hand authenticated. No commercial vendors of any kind are allowed, according to Sarah McNally with the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation Dept., organizers of the annual event. Past vendors have offered handmade dog collars, puppets, homemade furniture, jewelry, clothing, hair bows, photography and so much more. It’s always fun, McNally said, to see what you’re going to discover at the festival. The one thing for certain, is that it is hand made by one of the region’s talented craftsmen. The same rule is applied to food offerings. Expect regular carnival fare – but items are made fresh on site, including the corned beef and cabbage. Sponsored in part of Transportation Impact and the Emerald Isle Business Association and organized by Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation, the festival also features amusement rides, live entertainment, a beer garden, petting zoo and static displays, including the #43 Ford Fusion courtesy of Richard Petty Motorsports. The popular Little Mr. and Miss Leprechaun Contest kicks off the day at 9am. Whether you have children or not, this is a must-see event for anyone who hasn’t previously attended the festival. Both boys and girls age 2-3 and 45 will be judged on the originality and creativity of their costume and overall stage presentation. Preregistration is required by Thursday, March 12, by filling out a form at Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation or visiting www. emeraldislestpatricksfestival. Entertainment Schedule com. This year, the event Gold Stage will be limited to the first 20 participants who 9am Little Mr. & Miss Leprechaun register. Each entrant wins 11am 4EveralAll a small prize, although the Noon My Three Kilts winners walk away with a 1pm Pure T Mommicked savings bond. Because 2pm Bryan Mayer the festival will be busy, 3pm Heritage no registration can be 4:30pm Spare Change handled that morning. As always, the festival is free to attend. club news PKS Women’s Club THE JANUARY MEETING of the Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club ushered in an exciting year of activities for the club and a fond remembrance of two recently deceased club members, Connie Browne and Doe Martynowski, who both contributed so much to the Pine Knoll Shores community. Connie was a “Founding Mother” of the Women’s Club and an inspiration to club members, many of whom recall celebrating her 100th birthday with her. Doe was a dynamo – involved not only in various club activities but instrumental in the Christmas parade, bowling league and many other town endeavors. In their honor, the Women’s Club will make donations in their names to the Carteret Community College Scholarship Fund. Connie and Doe will be missed by the entire Pine Knoll Shores community. Our guest speaker in January was Dr. Mindy Merritt, a surgeon at the Carteret Center for Surgery in Morehead City, who specializes in breast and thyroid surgery. She spoke to the club about the importance of a lifelong commitment to insuring one’s own breast health. Early detection saves lives, she said, and outlined advances in both cancer detection and treatment that are available to us in Carteret County. Thanks to Dr. Merritt’s efforts, Carteret General Hospital has received a 3-D tomography machine, the only one currently available in eastern North Carolina. This is an important diagnostic tool to detect cancer in dense breast tissue. She also explained that while there are certain risk factors for breast cancer over which we have little or no control, such as genetics and some environmental factors, there are steps individuals can take to minimize risk. These include remaining physically active, controlling weight, limiting alcohol use, getting yearly mammograms and faithfully doing monthly breast selfexams. Dr. Merritt answered questions concerning hormone replacement therapy, hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome and available medical interventions in the treatment of breast cancer. During the business meeting club officers outlined the club’s financial health, acknowledged recent correspondence and reported on upcoming activities including the club’s plans to participate once again in the May 9 Mile of Hope event for children undergoing cancer treatment. Mary Jo Jennings reported that Glenda Riggs, executive director of the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program, sent a thank you letter for the club’s ongoing support of the program. The funds donated by the Women’s Club are used to buy needed prescriptions, pay for doctor’s visits, purchase clothing and other needs specific to individual clients. These funds are needed to supplement the funding the organization receives from grants that are limited to programming and salaries. The March meeting of the club will be on March 27 at the PKS Town Hall beginning at 9:30am. The guest speaker will be Patricia Wilder, a social worker and grief specialist, presenting a program entitled “Loss is Inevitable: How to Care for Yourself and Others While Grieving.” Guests are always welcome to attend. at the Emerald Isle Baptist Church. At the Carobell group home in Hubert, members decorated the yard for fall and assisted residents in decorating ornaments for their Christmas tree. • Visiting two Emerald Isle newcomers to present notebooks of information about native plants and coastal gardening gathered from the NC Cooperative Extension office, packed in a hand decorated tote bag, and including a native plant. • Decorating the Emerald Isle commissioners room for Christmas with a traditional Christmas theme featuring a fresh white pine tree covered with glass balls created by club members. The group also decorated a float and participated in the Emerald Isle Christmas parade. Members enjoyed a fun outing to Mike’s Farm to enjoy dinner and a hayride to view the lights. Also, the club is very proud of winning the district level first place award for its yearbook. The club’s major yearly fundraiser is the always popular card party. Planning is underway for the “Welcome Spring” themed event to be held from 1-4pm on Wednesday, March 18, at the Emerald Isle Recreation Center. Tickets are $10 and include refreshments and raffle prizes with 50/50 raffle tickets sold separately. For information contact Theresa Connelly-Kavanagh at 252-764-0420 or Ann Crane at 252-764-2439. mayor’s notes

AS WE PATIENTLY wait for warmer days and ultimately spring, it’s time for your board of commissioners to review our strategic plan that was implemented just a year ago. Today I want to talk about just a few of our strategic areas and give you some highlights on what is currently underway in those areas. When we did interviews for the plan we found that one of the main concerns of our citizens, not surprisingly, is “Beach Preservation.” During the off season our public safety department takes advantage of the nicer days we have and fixes and replaces sand fence for our dunes. We did a town wide installation a few years ago and it has been a huge success. We want to keep this “first line of defense” in good shape and keep building the dune during the spring winds. To add to the health of the beach grass and other beach plants we are considering a fertilizer treatment later in the spring. Fiscal planning hits us all near our hearts! This is a very measurable and serious strategic area. As I write this everyone is receiving their notice of tax valuation from the recent assessment. It’s too early in the game to know how all this will work out, but don’t hesitate to contact the county tax office. The town is not allowed to get between you and your county tax bill. If we see bad trends though, we won’t hesitate to raise a flag. “Community involvement” is another strategic area we take very seriously. With so many of our homeowners, part-time residents, communication remains a primary concern. Our strategic plan says that we are to, “Consider unique needs

Mayor Ken Jones of part-time residents and guests.” Our Town Manager Brian Kramer and I will venture to Apex to have a quarterly, “Dinner with the Mayor,” for the first quarter of 2015. Our board of commissioners meetings will all be streamed live on the internet going forward, too. Our Team Member of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2014 is Officer Jordan Seitter. Officer Seitter took the initiative this past year to take care of one of our citizens. You may have read about the gentleman that lived alone and wasn’t having a Thanksgiving dinner. This was a gentleman that we had reports from friends was home alone without air conditioning. First our VIPS started doing checks on him and our police officers were involved. Officer Seitter and Capt. Kurt Nakamura are the ones that came through as friends and delivered dinner to him. Their efforts reflect well on all of our town personnel. Great job! Thank you! That delves nicely into our Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS). This is part of our great team of volunteers that make so many things happen in our town. I want to thank this growing group for their diligence in checking up on our citizens and homes. This team is providing an invaluable service for a town like ours and we are very appreciative of your time. Thank you! The month of March is something we have been looking forward to since fall. I look forward to the beautiful work the Garden Club does every spring. If you get a chance, enjoy a spring walk on the beach. See you there!

served on the Chamber’s Board of Directors from 2004 until her death in December 2013 and was the longtime leader of the Public & Government Affairs Committee. Mayor Cooper was nominated by Atlantic Beach Town Manager David Walker and the town staff. The Chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates exemplary business practices to address quality, customer service, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. The recipient also excels in community leadership and has a substantial history as an established business. Tommy Morrow established Atlantic Beach Surf Shop in 1964, and the family-owned business celebrated its 50-year anniversary in 2014. He was nominated by the Atlantic Beach Town Council, which cited that “A.B. Surf Shop has brought ‘fame and prestige’ to the Crystal Coast and Carteret County…by riding every wave…and every new fad to come along…to grow stronger with each passing year.” By capitalizing on the surfing culture, music, lifestyle and fashion, A.B. Surf Shop doubled the size of its store in 2007. That was about the time that Tommy Morrow turned over management to sons, Johnny and Chuck, who grew up working in the business. Today, the store is a year-round shopping destination, a magnet that benefits all other Atlantic Beach shops and boutiques and retail establishments … as the Morrows are constantly drawing in new shoppers and greeting loyal customers who return to this local landmark. tourism BAROMETER Kids Pick Where to Stay and Grandparents Pay ACCORDING TO A new study by Preferred Hotel Group, kids are the big drivers of decisions on multigenerational trips, which is still one of the fastest and sustained growing segments in the travel business. Kids may shape the decisions on where to go, but grandparents are the ones who pay for those trips. And the big winners booking multigenerational groups turn out to be travel agents, not travel websites. Forty percent of both grandparents and parents say their kids “actively participate in or influence” vacation planning, specifically with respect to daily activities (77 percent) and deciding which destinations to visit (62 percent). Almost half (49 percent) of all multigenerational travelers say their grandchildren influence the selection of the hotel. Meanwhile, grandparents, even more so than parents (35 percent vs. 25 percent), pay for multigenerational trips to help family members enjoy a vacation they otherwise could not afford. These days children are calling the shots, grandparents are increasingly funding the cost of the trip, and an overwhelming percentage of millennials – 91 percent of those surveyed – say a multigenerational trip is something they try to take every year. Preferred Hotel Group’s study, its second of the multigenerational market in the past two years, confirmed a continued desire to spend more time with family on vacation. That trend first emerged as a primary motivation for leisure

travel following the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Multigenerational vacations now represent half of all vacations taken by both grandparents and parents. While these vacations included grandparents, parents and their children on 44 percent of such trips, the makeup of the multigenerational travel has expanded beyond immediate family to include siblings (31 percent), nephews and nieces (20 percent), and non-relative friends (20 percent) on one or more of the multigenerational vacations taken by the other 56 percent. Multigenerational travelers also display great loyalty to the destinations they visit; with 35 percent say they intend to visit the same destination on their next multigen trip. Beach vacations (35 percent) and theme park vacations (28 percent) are the most popular types of multigenerational vacations. According to the U.S. Census, there will be 80 million grandparents by 2020, accounting for nearly one-in-three adults. These grandparents are widely expected to work longer, have higher incomes and spend more on discretionary products and services than their predecessors. Specifically, the number of American travelers who have reached the life stage of “grandparent” (25 percent) has also risen to the highest level recorded in travel marketing research. Within this demographic group, 35 percent took at least one vacation with their grandchildren during the previous year (41 percent for affluent grandparents living in households with an annual income over $250,000).
