Tryon Palace Celebrates Independence

Guests are invited to pack a picnic lunch and spend the 4th of July with New Bern’s premier historic site, Tryon Palace, where an array of characters will be prepared to share the true story of independence at the site’s Glorious 4th celebration. In 1783, North Carolina Gov. Alexander Martin became the first American governor to issue a state order celebrating the 4th of July. Step back in time with Tryon Palace as the site remembers the historic occasion, complete with a reading of the document sponsored by the National Society of the Colonial Dames. On the Governor’s Palace South Lawn, join a gathering of the local militia in celebration of the end of the Revolutionary War and talk to the soldiers about their equipment and camp life. Throughout the day, the militia will perform firing demonstrations of their muskets and a light cannon. From 9am to 3pm on the Palace grounds, enjoy 18th-century music and country dancing, games of townball and historic

kids crafts, which will include making a historic toy, signing their own copy of the Declaration of Independence with a quill pen, and 18th-century costume dress-up. At 11am in the palace courtyard, watch a Fife & Drum Corps parade and attend a public gathering as Gov. Martin welcomes John Penn, one of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence, to read the Declaration for all. As guests spend the day immersed in the past, they can also encounter a vari-

ety of other historical characters and learn what the end of the revolution and our country’s newfound independence meant to each of them. Imagine what it would feel like to have fought for independence, to witness everyone celebrating it, but know that it does not apply to you. Meet Ben, a slave of Gov. Alexander Martin, as he discusses his service and a promise of freedom that seems a long ways away. What is a woman to do when a husband and brother have paid the ultimate price for freedom but it seems that no one is taking this newfound liberty seriously? Hear Elenor Pittman’s cry for reform from the people of the newly founded country. How do you return to your normal life when you are on the losing side of a war? Can friends who have become enemies return to their old ways? Alexander McAuslan is a newly returned loyalist and is hoping that he will find a land that truly embraces freedom for all. John Wright Stanly, a prominent patriot, calls on the citizens of New Bern to revel in their freedom but to not forget those who gave their lives in order for us to

enjoy the fruits of their sacrifice. While many citizens may have been familiar with the words of the Declaration of Independence, this 4th of July they bear a special meaning. The signing of peace treaties with England this year signifies that they truly are an independent country and have shed the shackles of servitude to Great Britain. Join with the town in the celebration of liberty by hearing the Declaration read from the palace steps by one of North Carolina’s signers. Swing by for some refreshments and gossip at Richard Cogdell’s Ordinary (in the courtyard behind the kitchen office). Ordinary was a typical 18th-century term for taverns, inns and public houses. The community would often gather at ordinaries to socialize or for public meetings and they were also hired out to hold court occasionally. (Cogdell’s was at least twice before the courthouse was built). Richard Cogdell was a leading patriot in New Bern and while he himself will not be there (the odds of him working the building were slim with his other civic responsibilities), some of his employees will be there to provide a bit of relief (in the form of lemonade) and (cont. on page 8)

to chat with visitors about the goings-on in town, and the nefarious actions taken by Gov. Josiah Martin before he left. Take advantage of free admission to the gardens from 9am to 7pm and take in the cast of characters that gather to tell the story from 9am-3pm. The events are free and open to the public. Interior tours require a ticket purchase.

As the day draws to a close, New Bern Parks and Recreation take over with a festival of its own at Lawson Creek Park. Amusements for the youngsters begin at 3pm and a reading of the Declaration of Independence is slated for 7pm. As night falls, enjoy patriotic music and fireworks, capping a complete celebration for New Bern.

Oriental Celebrates with Croaker Fest It may be small in stature, but the waterfront village of Oriental is big on fun. And there’s no better time for a visit than July 6-7 as residents pull out all the stops for the annual Croaker Festival, held in honor of the fish so abundant in the waterways that surround it. Located at the confluence of the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound, Oriental is the selfprofessed sailing capital of North Carolina, and its proximity to some of the state’s most traveled waterways have brought a large sailing population to the area. The result is an eclectic cast of residents, art galleries, an active historic theater, small shops and restaurants and a full calendar of annual events, the biggest of which is celebrated each July. Started in 1980 by the Oriental Women’s Club, the event was organized to help benefit nonprofit organizations in Pamlico County. That tradition continues today, with a sailing regatta, down home baking contests, live entertainment, a pageant and a variety of vendors at Lou-Mac Park. Vendors are in place early Friday morning and open booths as soon as they are set up, giving visitors a sneak peek. In official style, the Pamlico Chorale provides the opening entertainment at 4pm, followed by the Pamlico Country Band. Baking contest judging and Minnow and Croaker Queen pageants are the highlight of the evening, which ends with a street dance featuring The Soul Shakers. The old-fashioned small town parade gets things rolling at 10am on Saturday morning. Organized by Paul Fairbank of Village Hardware, the parade travels down Broad Street from Ragan Road, turning left on Hodges Street and again on South Street, conclud

ing at the festival site. More than 100 entries are expected, including Boy and Girl Scout troops, the fire department, vintage cars and of course, the Croaker Queen. The Ladies of the Neuse annually present awards in a variety of categories. Amusement rides for the youngsters open at 11:45 and the Pamlico Musical Society bring Molasses Creek from Ocracoke to the stage at noon. Races, coloring contests and a day full of fun await those who find their way to Oriental for the day, along with a street dance from 6-9pm featuring The Southern Aires. The day culminates with fireworks over the harbor, adding a fitting end to a weekend of festivities. If coming by boat, Oriental is located on the Intracoastal Waterway with several marinas within walking distance of the festival site. By car, take Hwy 17 to Bridgeton and turn left on Mill Street and then right on E Street. When E Street ends, take a left onto Blueberry Lane and left again on Hwy 55 to Oriental. East of Havelock, the Cherry Branch ferry operates throughout the day.

ARTS Teens Perform Little Women Developed in the 1980s, The Saax Bradbury Players were the first all teen troupe of actors. Reinstated in 2009, the group is gearing up for its third performance in New Bern. Adapted by Marisha Chamberlain, directed by Jordan Daughtey and produced by Jacob Fisher with teen mentor Krissy Boccia, the timeless classic “Little Women” takes to the stage at the New Bern Civic Theatre July 13-15 and 2021. This version of the play is an updated and contemporary portrayal of the tale of self-discovery and sisterhood. The March sisters struggle to maintain their house and family while their father is away during the Iraq/Afghanistan War. This drama is exquisitely adapted from the timehonored Louisa May Alcott novel and explores the sibling rivalry and trials of adolescence of four sisters, passionate Jo, caring Meg, meek

Beth and the youngest, Amy. Tickets are $14 in advance, $16 at the door for adults and $10 for students and active duty military. Online tickets are available at www. newberncivictheatre.com or by phone at 252633-0567.

Sutton is intrigued with the color and light of the impressionists but has added a new dimension to her art while working on her master’s degree in drawing and painting at ECU. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best know as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to

the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

ARTS (cont. from page 9) kept her impressionistic style, which is now often enhanced with the addition of mixed media and sometimes becomes abstracted. She has been working on a “Tree Series” and calls the forest her “sanctuary.” As a child, Sutton used to climb up into her favorite tree near their family’s mountain home to escape from the world and find solace in nature. “I learned at an early age to put my feelings and emotions in a painting to create an atmosphere of a particular time and place,” she said. Her work is in many collections including Wells Fargo Bank, Central Carolina Bank, Durham Regional Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, UNC Hospital, Alamance Regional Hospital, SAS Institute, Nations Bank, GTE, Glaxo Smith Kline, Tokyo American Club, Northern Telecom Japan, Inc., Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, and other domestic and international private collections.

She welcomes guests to stop and ask questions while she works and looks forward to meeting the public during her demonstration. To learn more about Carolina Creations, visit www.carolinacreationsnewbern.com.

ECU/Loessin Summer Theatre ECU brings its troupe of summer actors to the Cullman Performance Hall at the NC History Center to perform in three very different plays July 3-7. Featured are “Collision Course – a 60s Retro,” which includes a collection of 12 short plays from the best young playwrights of the turbulent 1960s who became America’s leading dramatists of the next three decades. The performance also includes some of the best of 1960s rock and roll. “Our Town,” Thornton Wilder’s beloved American classic and “Seven in One Blow,” a children’s theatre play developed by Randy Sharp and the Axis Theatre Company of New York are also included. The latter of which is a contemporary take on the Grimm Brothers’ classic fairy tale with princesses, monsters, ogres and even a talking green-pea. “Collision Course – a 60s Retro” can be seen at 8pm on July 6 or 7; “Seven in One Blow” is slated for 2pm on July 3 and 5 and 11am on July 7; and “Our Town” hits the stage at 7:30pm on July 3 and 5 and 2pm on July 6-7. Ticket prices vary per show, from $5 for youngsters to about $15 for adults. They are on sale online at www.ecuarts.com, or by phone at 252-328-6829.

“Much Ado About Nothing”

Anna Smith 14

New Bern Magazine

The stars will shine brightly in Shakespeare’s delightful comedy “Much Ado About Nothing,” Aug. 2-19 as the main presentation of the Carolinian Shakespeare Festival. A star-studded cast of visiting guest artists has been announced for this production, which will be presented in the

Cullman Performance Hall in the NC History Center, part of Tryon Palace. “This is everyone’s favorite play. Much Ado About Nothing is high comedy and its word-play and banter are things of beauty. We’re so happy we’ve been invited back to perform this delightful comedy at Tryon Palace’s Cullman Hall. It’s going to be a great festival,” said Artistic Director Mary McGinley. “We’ve worked hard to put together the perfect cast for this comedy about two reluctant

lovers who always try to get the last word. We’ve auditioned more than 200 actors in New Bern and New York City. I think we’ve come up with a terrific combination and I can’t wait to work with all of them.” This funny story focuses on Beatrice and Benedick, who constantly argue. The two of them elevate the art of the quarrel to a “merry war” of wordplay. Their best friends trick them into realizing that they actually love each other. When things turn dark, this love is tested but true love wins in the end. Filling the role of Beatrice is Anna Phyllis Smith, who has performed in the New York Shakespeare Fest, Manhattan Shakespeare Project and Olympic Shakespeare Productions. Playing opposite Anna as the clever Benedick is Scott Renzoni. “Renzo” comes to Eastern North Carolina fresh from appearing in “Amadeus” with the Theatre Company in Cambridge, NY. He is an actor with Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Mass. Additional characters will be played by Sydney Angel, Phillip Burke, Jaike Foley-Schultz and Michael Deely. The cast will also be featured in the festival’s fringe events, including concert readings of “Henry IV, Part 2.” Tickets are on sale now by calling 252-639-3524. To learn more about the annual festival, visit www.csfest.net.

There’s endlessly scheming counselor Damien, and in the background a lowly cook and cook maid who may just know more than it seems… “Short Live the Queen” is the newest mystery drama production put forth by Athens of the South Productions, with performances set for 7pm, July 6-7 and 13-14 at the historic Stanly Hall in New Bern. “We’ve performed in the past at the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina, and we’ve had an excellent relationship with them, but for this production we’ve decided to try a new venue,” Bill Hand, director of the company, said. “I’m really excited about the possibilities here – it’s a beautiful hall, with a lot of exciting history behind it. “Over the couple of years we’ve been running, we’ve staged a variety of situations in our shows,” said Hand, who is also the company’s in-house playwright. “We’ve done a western spoof, a story about hobos, a Civil War tale about hidden treasure, a spy spoof, and even a fantasy mystery involving the kidnapping of Father Christmas. With this show we take a real step back in time, to the 1400s. “I’ve thrown a few Shakespearian bits

into the script as a nod to the bard, but on the whole it’s just a fun piece with our usual mix of dialogue-driven comedy, physical comedy and even a little swordplay.” Hand notes the play is not exceedingly realistic in its portrayal and includes some modern references. While the story takes place in England, the characters all hail from such provinces as Bayboro, Morehead and Bath. The cast includes Beth Gosnell as Queen Mortenfast; Lee Wheeler as Lord Horton (Earl of Bath); Nancy Hitchcock as Lady Bella of Morehead; Sarah Adanosky as Princess Della; Bill Hand as Damien; Bailey Wheeler as the jester Bim; Roxanne Belrose as Gretchen the cookmaid and Daryl Harris as Welldon the cook. Tickets are $30 for dinner and show and $15 for show-only. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more, students under 16, active military, senior and emergency service employees. Tickets can be purchased through the Bank of the Arts, the Rivertowne Ballroom, through the Athens of the South website at athensmysterydinners.yolasite.com or by calling the company at 252-229-4977.

Life is a “Cabaret” RiverTowne Players closes out the season with the musical, “Cabaret.” Winner of eight Tony Awards (1966-67) when it originally opened, “Cabaret” is based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. It follows the lives of several artists, writers and performers at the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin, Germany just before the rise of the Third Reich and the start of World War II. The play deals with many adult themes including intolerance which gives the play an R-rating. The audience will be welcomed to the “Cabaret” by the emcee of the Kit Kat Klub, who will assure them that, whatever their troubles, they will forget them at the Cabaret. ARTS (cont. from page 16) provide wry commentary throughout the show. On the train to Berlin we find Cliff, a young American writer, and Ernst, a German who surprises Cliff by putting his briefcase among Cliff’s luggage at the German border. Ernst takes Cliff to the Kit Kat Klub where he meets singer, Sally Bowles. Musical numbers include “It Couldn’t Please Me More,” “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don’t Tell Mama” and others. If theatre mirrors life, “Cabaret” reflects the dark and decadent side that led up to the Nazi rise to power. It was a tumultuous and heartbreaking era. Directing the show is Siobhan Gaestel, with

musical direction by Timothy Maddox and choreography by Stacy Miller. Executive producer is Linda Roach and co-producers are Carla Sittig and Terry Daniels. “Cabaret” will run July 19-21 and 26-28 at the Masonic Theatre. Performances are scheduled for 8pm with Sunday matinees at 3pm on July 22 and 29. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. They may be purchased at the Bank of the Arts, or by calling 252-638-2577. For more information on RiverTowne Players, visit www.RiverTowneRepertoryPlayers.net.
