INDEPENDENCE New Bern

New Bern Magazine

Air Station Cherry Point will be on hand to entertain with patriotic tunes and classic favorites from 6:30-9pm. Food vendors will be on site with treats ranging from hamburgers and hot dogs to pizza and sweet treats. Coolers and service animals are welcome, but alcohol, glass containers, fireworks and all other pets are prohibited during the event. Fireworks begin at 9pm.

The annual Freedom Festival gets underway at 5pm in City Park with traditional country fair games, included a three-legged race, pie eating contest and more. Guests can expect food and beverage vendors, music, games and schedule of fun to make the hours pass quickly. The excitement builds

with the crowds, most of which will claim a spot of land with their blankets and lawn chairs to watch the fireworks set to begin at 9pm.

Oriental

For 33 years, the folks in Oriental have been showing their patriotism – and a solid dose of good humor – with the Croaker Festival, scheduled this year for July 5-6. Named after the croaker, the fish that is abundant in the waterways surrounding Oriental, the annual event boasts music, food, contests, rides, a parade and fireworks to the small seaport village. Friday evening is reserved for the Croaker Queen pageant and the popular street dance, featuring music by The Soul Shakers. Judging for the baking contest is on tap, then the goodies are made available to the public. And the kid’s park is open from 6-9:30pm. On Saturday, booths open at 8:30am, but things don’t officially feel like they’re up and running until the parade takes to the streets at 10. Averaging about 100 entries per year, the parade is always full of surprises according to longtime

volunteer Candy Bohmert. It’s inevitable that one of the townspeople will bring out a festival dragon for the event, although Bohmert admits it is sometimes hard to know exactly what will show up. “And that’s really part of the fun,” she said. “People can be involved in the planning and still be surprised by what they see. “ Saturday’s slate of events includes live music throughout the day, a regatta, rides for the children, vendors and plenty of fun for the whole family. Saturday’s street dance from 6-9pm features the traditional swing music of The Southern Aires, followed by the town’s fireworks display – best when viewed from the bridge. “The fireworks are definitely the favorite,” said Bohmert with a chuckle. “When that first once goes off it comes with a big sigh of relief by the volunteers.” Whether your spend your Fourth of July with a quiet backyard barbecue, or choose to attend one or more of the many organized events, we wish you a happy Independence Day! ARTS New Bern Waterfront by Janet Dixon

Painting in Red White and Blue

Carolina Creations Fine Art & Contemporary Craft Gallery welcomes “Red, White and Blue” watercolors by New Bern artist Janet Dixon. The show runs July 1 through Aug. 31, with an opening reception planned from 5-8pm on Friday, July 12, to coincide with ArtWalk. In 1990 Dixon began experimenting with watercolors. She took a course at the Center for Creative Arts in Yorklyn, Del., and has been painting nearly every day since. She now teaches art herself and has been doing so for a large part of her career. “I have been working on this show for over a year and did not realize it! When asked to be the featured artist in Carolina Creations for the months of July and August I knew I wanted to do a show but I wasn’t sure what I would do. When Carolina Creations requested a title for the show I chose Red, White and Blue. Considering the works would hang in July, I felt that was an appropriate title. I also felt it would give me some wiggle room to come up with work that would include those colors,” said Dixon. “To incorporate the title into the show I have painted each of the original full pallet paintings in a duplicate painting which is literally done in red, white, and blue.” The idea of showing these works of art together creates an opportunity for the viewer

New Bern Magazine

to explore the work a little further. The full pallet pieces can be studied for the full spectrum of their colors. Then the viewer can explore the same subject in a limited pallet of red, white, and blue for a little more intrigue. Janet has exhibited in numerous art shows, mostly in the Delaware, Philadelphia and North Carolina. Her work is part of many corporate and private collections. She was selected out of 11,000 artists across the US as a finalist in The Artist Magazine’s 1997 art competition. She was also was one of 10 finalists in International Artist magazine’s 2002 art competition. She has taught private art lessons out of her studio since 1993. For more information contact the gallery at 252-633-4369, email info@carolinacreations. com or visit www.carolinacreations.com.

Group Closes Season with Home Run

“Damn Yankees” makes its New Bern debut on the RiverTowne Players’ stage at the historic Masonic Theatre on Thursday, July 18. Light, fast-paced and devilishly clever, “Damn Yankees” is a home-run hit whose all-American subject matter and irreverent sense of humor have brought many a sports fan into the theatre. The story is a modern retelling of the tales of Faust with a 1950s setting centered on baseball’s American League team, the Washington

Senators. Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the devil (the charming but devious Applegate) for a chance to lead the Senators to victory against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he’s left behind. With the help of a handy escape clause and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts Applegate. “Damn Yankees” is based on the novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant” by Douglass Wallop with the musical’s book by George Abbot and Douglass Wallop. The music and lyrics are by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. Director John Van Dyke believes the show is as much about HEART as it is about baseball. The music direction is by is Brandon Banks, choreographer is Jaclyn Pugh with Lori Favre as assistant director and producer along with Linda Roach as executive producer. To add to the baseball park atmosphere, RiverTowne has scheduled tailgate parties in the Masonic Theatre parking lot for opening night, July 18 and for the two matinees on July 21 and 28. Fran’s Family Hot Dogs will be serving up traditional baseball fare, nachos and cheese, hot dogs, sausage dogs, chips and drinks. Bring your lawn chairs and get in the spirit for a show about America’s favorite pastime. Shows are scheduled for 8pm on July 1820 and 25-27 and matinees begin at 3pm on July 21 and 28. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door, $10 students with valid school ID and may be purchased at the Council of the Arts’ temporary location, 308 George Street, New Bern, 252-638-2577.

Landscape Painter is Featured

New Bern ArtWorks Fine Art Gallery presents works by artist Joanne Geisel. A reception to welcome the new exhibit is slated from 5-8pm on Friday, July 12 during ArtWalk. The exhibit will be on view through Aug. 9. Most of Geisel’s paintings reflect a moment in time where it is important to capture an immediate impression. She assess the composition, the values, the proportions and color, then she paints, all the while trying to maintain the initial feeling that drew her to paint the particular landscape, person or still life. Sometimes a small painting is completed in a single day. Painting since she was a child, and having majored in art in college, and after many years of doing other things, Geisel can now return to her love of oil painting and fulfill a lifelong dream. As a North Carolina landscape artist, Geisel paints the skies, beaches, boats and marshes, but finds other subjects and locations equally captivating. Painting outdoors en plein air always provides an enjoyable challenge and seems critical to understanding nature in new ways.

In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best known as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bärenâ€? or “bears.â€? While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington.

STORE ARTS

Like Father Like Son Any idea what decade brought the ball point pen to the United States? No? David Blythe, owner of Branch’s Furniture does. And he has evidence to boot. In his office he has found magazines introducing the magical tools to the masses, along with advertisements for highlighters, calculators and other office equipment that is commonplace today. “It’s amazing the transition – what was the modern office in the 1950s and what we see as a modern office today,” said Branch, sitting in a rocker on the porch of the company’s Front Street annex. To call Branch’s anything short of an icon in the community would be unfair to Blythe and his ancestors. Opened in 1949 by his grandfather, Sam Branch, the store, which then focused primarily on office furniture and supplies, has been taking care of businesses in Craven, Pamlico and Carteret counties for more than 60 years. From adding machines to waiting room sofas, Branch’s was the go-to. In fact, for anyone hoping to pick up anything from the Remington Rand Co., it was the only place to go, as Branch’s was the only authorized dealer in the tri-county area. In 1963, the site added fine gifts and accessories and in the early 1970s it opened a second office supply store in downtown Morehead City. David’s father, Charles Blythe, took over business operations in the mid-1970s and passed

Branch’s Furniture 309 Pollock St. 215 E. Front St. 252.633.4400 www.branchsfurniture.com

the company to his sons Chris and David in the mid1990s. In 2003, the brothers added the home furniture component to the store and most recently opened a second New Bern location with a focus on outdoor living, including furniture, grills and more. “The big box stores made it really hard to compete as an office supply store,” said Blythe. “Being part of the third generation has definitely had its ups and downs, but the diversity has really worked well for us. Our focus is still on furniture, home furniture, outdoor furniture and, of course, office furniture. Our goal is to offer all the furnishings necessary to make people’s lives more comfortable.” And while the company still sees its longtime customers, it is also introducing Branch’s to a whole new generation, and introducing products they may not have the opportunity to see anywhere else, including a new line of Brazilian cherry furniture. “I started working with the company when I was about 10 and have been involved my whole life in one way or another,” said Blythe. “And I can’t complain one bit. I’m sitting here on the porch in a rocker, watching the wind blow and the river roll by. Who could ask for anything more?”
