Bridgeton RiverFest

Returns Bigger & Better

argaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever does.” Bridgeton’s RiverFest is proof that Mead knew of what she spoke. Starting with a minimal budget of $250 and a tiny, determined group of people, this fine art festival put little Bridgeton on the map last year. The story of the festival is as amazing as the audacity of the people that created the event. Tom Wynn, Bridgeton Harbor Marina’s harbor master, started it all. He approached the Bridgeton Improvement Committee (BIC) hoping to convince them that a sailing regatta, coupled with an art show, would draw people to the tiny town. They decided he was probably right and came on board. The only problem was … how do they stage an art festival in just three months? Wynn began assembling a team. He approached marina resident Alan Welch, a retired Duke University marketing and

graphics specialist and recruited art show veteran Pene diMaio to help recruit artists for the show. Between Welch’s marketing genius and diMaio’s festival savvy, things started happening. Welch and diMaio provided the spark and driving force that turned what had been planned as a small event into something to be reckoned with. Welch’s guiding byline became, “We are too ignorant to know what can’t be done.” diMaio’s, on the other hand was, “What do you mean we can’t pay for it? The money

will be there – even if it has to float down from the universe.” And, indeed, it did. Volunteers and donations started coming in as key BIC members took on responsibilities like food vending, logistics and music coordination. People worked, they laughed, and along the way, they made the event happen. These motivated people did it ALL simply because they believed that a festival would bring life back to a little town that had lost its purpose ... besides, it was fun! Along with the BIC, other community organizations and businesses stepped up and offered support. Pepsi was a major sponsor, as was the West Haven Group of Orlando, Fla., the owners of the Bridgeton Harbor Marina. The tourist development branch of the Craven County Visitor’s Center helped with information and dissemination. Numerous businesses and private individuals donated time, financial support and inkind gifts. Even the logo for the festival, which was designed by Terran Bayer of WestWay Studios in San Diego, Calif., was donated! “The way private individuals rose to the challenge is one of the most exciting aspects of this project,” said Alan Welch. “We have discovered that if you ask people to help, it is far and away most likely to happen. They realize that we are building something from nothing while building great community spirit as well.” The community saw the results of all its hard work. The 2011 inaugural Bridgeton RiverFest consisted of 50 artists from as far north as New York and as far south as Charleston, SC. There were regional musicians performing both days, an antique auto display of 25 vintage cars, marine vendors and food booths. For the under 12 set there were pirates, a treasure hunt, pirate costume contest and face painting. Police estimated that up to 6,000 visitors

came to the festival while the Sun Journal’s People’s Choice survey put RiverFest in the top three events of the region. And now they’re at it again. This year’s event, slated for June 23-24, promises to be even bigger and better. Welch and diMaio, with a whole year to prepare rather than the 3 months they had last year, have put together an exciting line up, from a full slate of food vendors to a schedule full of musicians. A good portion of the hoped for 75 fine artists and crafters have already applied, and a good number of other vendors have already signed up but they’re still accepting applications. “There will be something for everyone this year,” said Welch. “Along with the fine art, local authors and music, (there will) be river tours, river ferries to New Bern, KidsArtapalooza, a BlueBerry BakeOff with generous prizes and maybe even trolleys and carriages.” The group hopes to draw visitors to the area from as far away as the Triangle, Greenville, Wilmington and beyond. “RiverFest WILL be a destination event,” said diMaio. pieces ranging in style from Americana to reggae-sounding vocals, from Celtic influenced jigs and reels to the music of Brazil and Argentina. The ensemble’s instrumentation sets it apart from other acoustic acts. The band features Rob Sharer on guitar, flute, fiddle and vocals; David DiGiuseppe on accordion and Irish cittern; and Jim Roberts on percussion. Craicdown recently released its debut CD entitled “Roads,” which is available on iTunes, amazon.com and CDbaby. The recording features a variety of songs and instrumentals, original compositions and traditional pieces. Tickets for the show are $10 and can be purchased at Trent River Coffee Company.

Coni Minneci’s recent series “A to Z Women Artists,” compelling in both its artistry and concept, takes center stage at New Bern ArtWorks & Company. A reception to welcome the artist and work is planned from 5-7pm on Friday, June 8. The premise of the series is deceptively simple – 26 women artists, 26 oil paintings – each containing a pear. The intimate scale of each

piece references the roots of still life genre paintings and the shape of a pear is frequently associated with a specific female body type. This is where the simplicity ends as Minneci mines the research she has compiled and constructs highly imaginative solutions for each painting that are richly laden with metaphor and meaning and occasional hints of humor and irony. Minneci’s project provides viewers with an opportunity to discover several relatively obscure artists and serves as a reminder of women artists such as Judy Chicago, Susan Rothengerg, Cindy Sherman and others who played critical roles in shaping the art history of the Western worlds. Theatre Workshop for Youth Registration is underway for the Youth Theatre Workshop offered through the New Bern Civic Theatre, June 11-23. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best know as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. She hand rolls her clay into large flat slabs that are free-hand cut to size and shape then sculpts them to form each unique piece. After nearly a week of drying time, the pieces are fired twice; the first time for 12 hours, up to 1,971° then again for 8 hours at 1,855° after the pieces have been hand painted. DeBois is an interior design who loves nature and flowers. She said she is motivated by “knowing that my work makes people happy!” Marie Dubois has worked with clay for nearly 25 years and has incorporated her designs with the interior environment in mind, to add that extra pop of color and surprise to a space. Her delicate style and dreamy imagery is reminiscent of pastel water colors embellished with garden flora design. Tribute Band Performs in New Bern

ailed by critics and fans alike as the most authentic and endearing Beatles tribute band, 1964 – The Tribute makes its return to New Bern at 7:30pm on Saturday, June 30, at the Grover C. Fields Performing Arts Center. The band took the town by storm last summer, performing for a sold out crowd as more than 100 ticketseekers lined up in hopes of vacant seats. If there was anyone who wasn’t taken aback by the intense response to the band, it was Frank Salvatore of the New Bern Civitan Club who spearheaded the fundraising concert. After seeing a televised interview with the band on the eve of its 11th performance at Carnegie Hall, he was dedicated to bringing them to this small riverfront community. “We’ve really never seen anything like it. So many people missed the show simply because there weren’t enough tickets. There were a lot of disappointed people,” Salvatore said recently. It was all the encouragement he needed to see if the band would consider a second visit, he added. General admission tickets are $37 and can be purchased at the New Bern Convention Center and Fuller’s Music in New Bern, Guitars, Etc. in Havelock, and Harris Teeter locations in New Bern and Morehead City. Reserved seating is $42 per person and can be purchased by calling 252-636-0845. Salvatore urges guests to grab their tickets early. that will last forever. More than 20 years of research and performances have made the band a master of their craft. Tagged the “best Beatles tribute on earth” by Rolling Stone Magazine, 1964 creates an early 1960s live Beatles concert with period instruments, clothing, hairstyles and onstage banter with an accuracy that many say is unmatched. As Mark Benson (John Lennon) likes to mention on stage, he thought the Beatles gig would last for a few lunch time shows, but never imagined that he’d still be in the role more than 20 years later. Nor did he envision sold out shows at Carnegie Hall (2,800 seats) or the Red Rock Amphitheater (10,000 seats). The band “shows the audience what it was like to attend a Beatles concert in the early 1960s and generates the same feel-

ing of happiness that is still generated by their music of the Beatles,” said Benson. “We get so much of this positive energy back from our audiences, it reassures us that for now, we are where we are supposed to be.” The concert helps raise funds for the Civitan Club and its charitable work, which focuses on those living with developmental disabilities. Regular donations are made to the Boys and Girls Homes of NC, Inc., Cystic Fibrosis Telethon, Duke Child Development Unit, Special Olympics, Fishing Round-up, Operation Santa Claus and others. RIVER CITY Summer Swimming Lessons

The New Bern Parks and Recreation Dept. is offering five, 2-week Learn to Swim lessons for children ages 3-12 at the New Bern Aquatic Center, 1155 Laura Lane. The first session begins on Saturday, June 9. Each session consists of eight lessons. The cost is $40 for city residents and $70 for non-city residents. Beer Fest Returns

New Bern will play host to its third annual beer festival from 1-6pm on Saturday, June 23, at the Riverfront Convention Center. The Brew Bern Beer Fest is sponsored by the Beer Army to help promote the NC

Brewers Guild and craft beers statewide. Proceeds also benefit the Museum of the Marine in Jacksonville. The event features more than 50 craft and regional microbrews with more than 150 total offerings. Taste your way through the convention center with a VIP ticket, $40 before June 19, and $50 after. MumFest Nets Award

October’s favorite event, MumFest, has been selected by the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast for the month of October. STS chooses the top events in the Southeast for each month of the year and publishes the list of winners quarterly, sending the release to more than 1,600 newspapers, magazines, radio stations, TV stations and AAA. The Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corp. produces MumFest, a city-sponsored event, with the support of area businesses and organizations. Festival proceeds help fund downtown revitalization projects. The annual festival attracts more than 80,000 visitors to New Bern’s historic downtown. The 2012 event is slated for Oct. 13-14.
