Nutcracker

Ballet Performances Audiences are once again treated to a ballet adventure with Down East Dance’s interpretation of “The Nutcracker Ballet.” The performances begin at 8pm on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 and Dec. 7-8 and at 2pm on Dec. 2 and 9. All performances take place at the Historic Athens Theatre in downtown New Bern. “The Nutcracker Ballet” is based on the book “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” written by E.T.A. Hoffman. In 1891, world renowned choreographer, Marius Petipa commissioned Peter Tchaikovsky to compose the music for an adptation of the tale by Alexandre Dumas. Its first performance in 1892 was a complete failure, with both critics and audiences disliking the production. Since then, “The Nutcracker” has been the most widely performed ballet in the world. Almost every ballet company from Australia to Europe and Asia to America performs the “The Nutcracker” during the holiday season. The ballet made its way to Western Europe in the 1930s and to America by 1940, performed by Ballet Russe. The first American full length “Nutcracker” was performed by the San Francisco Ballet, choreographed by W. Christensen. It has since become an annual holiday tradition. Tchaikovsky did not think much of his production but ballet-goers around the world have consistently acclaimed the work. For many, the highlight of this holiday season is hearing the beautiful tones of Tchaikovsky’s music as the seasonal spirit comes alive on stage. Many folks have enjoyed this production throughout their lives, and this year proves to be no different, with Tchaikovsky’s production coming to life all across the world, including New Bern. Sounds of the season greet those entering the historic Athens Theatre to enjoy this year’s ballet production presented as a bedtime story for Marie, as told by her mother. Join the magical adventure that includes a grand Christmas party, twirling snowflakes, a nutcracker soldier, life-size mouse queen and a journey to the Land of the Sweets with its beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and its Waltzing Flowers.

Artist Jim Carson Featured

New Bern Artworks welcomes artist Jim Carson, who has been painting in both oil and acrylic for more 20 years. Art critics have described his work as “fresh and painterly.” Carson prefers painting plein air, giving a simplicity (cont.on page 8)

and freshness to his paintings that distinguish them, and give them a character of their own. For 31 years, Carson was the managing partner in the law firm of Chambless, Higdon and Carson, in Macon, Ga., where he primarily practiced business, banking and real estate law. Although always interested in drawing, even at an early age, Carson’s interest in painting lay dormant as law school, marriage, raising a family and building a law practice took precedence. In 1989 Carson’s wife, Beth, gave him a painting course for Christmas with Marianne Dunn, and he has never looked back. This journey culminated in 2003 when Jim retired from practicing law and moved to Saluda, where he paints full time. A reception is planned from 5-8pm on Friday, Nov. 9 to welcome the artist and his featured work. New Bern ArtWorks & Company

Big Break to Rock New Bern

The Broad St. Social Club hosts up and coming rock band, Big Break, at 9pm on Saturday, Nov. 3. The group, together for a little more than two years, toured the Carolinas this summer, promoting its first album. A second full production, “Head Full of Melodies,” is due out this winter. This band’s first offering runs the gamut, from punk-rock to blues and even bluegrass. Band leader David Myers almost always includes a tinge of dark humor. Myers is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band and does most of the writing. He is joined by Alan Erickson, bassist and keyboardist. Erickson is classically trained, passionate about music and a perfectionist in his expectations for the band. Ashley Honbarrier adds sweet back grounds along with conga and rhythm. She is also a guitar player, a song writer and has a long history of playing in duos in the Carolinas. Stephen “Cracker” Williams is the band’s drummer and a multi-instrumentalist, playing bass guitar in several bands before joining Big Break. “I believe this is a band worth watching and I think if you give this band some of your time you will hear what I hear, you will see what I see and you too will believe in them,” said C.J. Peters, Big Break’s manager.

The Blues Come to Oriental

Pamlico Musical Society brings the blues home to roost when James ‘Super Chikan’

Johnson and his band, The Fighting Cocks, fly into town at 7:30pm on Friday, Nov. 16 at Oriental’s Old Theater. As a child growing up in the small Delta town of Darling, Miss., Johnson developed an interest in the chickens his family raised, earning him the nickname, Chicken. Years later, working a brief stint as a taxi driver, his friends dubbed him ‘Super Chikan’, thanks to his heavy foot on the pedal. The taxi gig didn’t last because Johnson was already picking up speed as a popular blues musician, playing bass in local clubs with his uncle’s band. Johnson’s first album, “Blues Come Home to Roost,” was written on the road while he worked as a truck driver. This lively collection of songs combines blues with country, funk and rock and earned Johnson awards for Best Blues Album and Best Debut Album from Living Blues magazine. Since then, he has recorded a (cont. on page 11)

In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best known as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. number of award-winning CDs and toured internationally. Johnson has been a featured artist for the Library of Congress’ “Homegrown” series, and performed at the Kennedy Center. Despite his international acclaim, Johnsons’ heart is never far from his home in Clarksdale, Miss. From picking cotton to driving trucks in Arkansas and Tennessee, his music reflects a man who takes life as it comes – with great humor, genuine warmth and a special gift for songwriting. He traces his love for the blues to childhood memories of sitting on the front porch with his grandfather listening to the likes of Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed. “The blues hangs on to you and it’s hard to shake,” said Johnson. It seems his fans agree. Tickets to the concert are $20 and available at Nautical Wheelers, Oriental, by calling 252-249-3670, or visiting www.pamlicomusic.org.

Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Try-

on Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

RIVER CITY Lunch and Learn with Chip Chagnon

The New Bern Historical Society’s “Lunch and Learn” series presents “The Life and Times of the Order of the Knights Templar” at 11:30am on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Chelsea Restaurant. On the 700th anniversary of the official Papal disbanding of the Knights Templar, guest speaker Chip Chagnon, local Templar novelist and historian, guides folks into the mist of time and the controversial Knights Templar’s 193 year life and death journey. W.R. “Chip” Chagnon had a 35-year US Army career, from which he retired as a colonel assigned to the US Army General Staff. He is a combat wounded veteran whose decorations include the Legion of Honor, the Soldier’s Medal, Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart and 12 other campaign or services medals. Upon his retirement, he worked 10 years as an executive level logistician. Both careers afforded Chagnon the opportunity to travel to most of the towns and very paths called out in his novels. His training and experience also provided him with a soldier’s insight of the Templar organizational structure and tactics and an executive’s appreciation of Templar business practices. Call the New Bern Historical Society office at 252-638-8558 for prepaid reservations only. Tickets are $15 for members and $17 for nonmembers.

Dr. Richard K. Lore Lecture Series

The New Bern Historical Society is hosting the 6th annual Dr. Richard K. Lore lecture series with Kevin Duffus and his program on “The Lost Light: a Civil War Mystery” at 2pm on Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Cullman Performance Hall in the NC History Center on Front Street. This program is free and open to the public. An award-winning documentary filmmaker, Duffus returns to New Bern for his fourth performance with the story of his extraordinary odyssey to find the original Cape Hatteras Lighthouse lens, which went missing during the American Civil War and became a power struggle between the two sides. This was one of the great-unsolved mysteries of American lighthouse history – until Duffus found the historical lens, which is now considered an American treasure. This special lecture series is dedicated to the late historian Dick Lore. Contact New Bern Historical Society at 252-638-8558 or visit www.newbernhistorical.org for additional information.

RIVER CITY (cont. from page 15) the Tryon Palace 2012 Garden Lecture Series as it greets award-winning historian Andrea Wulf for a lecture, “Founding Gardeners: The Revolutionary Generation, Nature and the Shaping of the American Nation.” Wulf’s illustrated talk looks at the lives of the founding fathers and how their attitude toward plants, gardens, nature and agriculture shaped the American nation. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison regarded themselves foremost as farmers and plantsmen; for them, gardening, agriculture and botany were elemental passions, as deeply ingrained in their characters as their belief in liberty for the nation they were creating. In a unique retelling of the creation of America, Wulf will illustrate how plants, politics and personalities intertwined as never before. Admission is free and a book signing session by the author is at 4:15pm. For more information, contact Brandon Anderson, director of education, at 252-639-3584 or banderson@tryonpalace.org.
