New Bern’s riverside city is revving up for its annual award-winning fall festival – MumFest. This event is two days of family fun, attracting an average of about 80,000 festival goers to the beautifully restored, historic downtown waterfront, and the festival was named a Top 20 Event in the Southeastern US by the Southeastern Tourism Society. Visitors find music, dancing, shopping, live music and food throughout the festival weekend. This year, MumFest features the 228-foot mega yacht SeaFair with galleries filled with fine art, jewelry and sculpture from artists around the world. This is the world’s first mobile mega yacht and one of the 10 largest privately owned yachts in the US. The yacht will remain docked at the Hilton Marina for MumFest weekend, arriving Oct. 10. Tickets for the weekend are $15 at the door for a one-day pass and $20 for a priority multiple-day ticket.

There are many more events to keep everyone entertained through the weekend. Thrill seekers will love the King BMX stunt show, dog enthusiasts can enjoy the Incredible Purina Dog Team, race car fans will enjoy checking out the Detroit Chevrolet Grand Prix of Belle Isle Indy Show Car and the popular boat show expands this year with a new recreation venue, Outdoor Life. This new venue has exhibits including bicycling, camping, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, running, sailing and stand-up paddle boarding. Other festival favorites include live bands, roving street performers, dancers, choral groups, KIDSTUFF and Lil’ Kidstuff, amusement rides, magicians, clowns, the Gabardine sisters, a model train show, Weller Kennels retriever trials, NBPD K-9s, face painting and the Art Zone will have plein air artists working on Pollock Street by the Pumpkin Patch at Christ Church. With more than 300 commercial and nonprofit exhibitors and other vendors, there really is something for everyone to enjoy. Live music is a major part of MumFest, and this year music lovers have every reason to be excited. The downtown stage, next to the Galley Store, grooves all weekend long with several different bands playing everyone’s favorite songs. The band 3 Day Weekend brings all the sounds of the classic and Southern rock era,

influenced by bands like The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The five member band The Shake Doctors, led by front man Clay Kirschner, has a play list that includes hits from Billy Idol to Chairman of the Board and everything in between. Tee Jay Jones and the Pamlico Sound Machine is equipped with a broad repertoire that covers music from Soul to Beach to Jazz. “We reach into the heart of each piece of music and bring out its soul,” said Jones. Tom & Dahlin’ have been entertaining audiences for years. They perform regularly at a local restaurant, at weddings, parties and special events. The Achordants formed at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001 with a mission to entertain and promote their message of diversity through music. Using tight harmonies and a lighthearted appeal of the group’s diverse repertoire, ranging from gospel to Scottish folk songs, is a reflection of the group members’ individuality as an a capella group. Pauline Smith and Don Blalock sing a mixture of classic country music made famous by legends like Loretta Lynn and Johnny and June Cash. On Saturday night, MumFesters stroll across the Trent River Bridge to enjoy a magical evening under the stars at the 2nd annual YPG River Jam concert from 5-11pm. The concert takes place on the lawn behind the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina; blanket and chairs are welcome. Billy Holton and the Soul Shakers and The Band of Oz will get the party going before The Switch takes the stage to rock out the rest of the evening. To purchase tickets go to www.ypgriverjam.com.

ARTS Film Noir Series Announced

The Old Theater in Oriental announces a new film series with four classic detective films playing Sunday nights in October. The wellknown film noir examples revolve around private eye characters with tough-guy attitudes. The films include John Huston’s “The Maltese Falcon,” Howard Hawks’ “The Big Sleep,” Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” and Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown.” Sight and Sound, an international film magazine recently polled 846 film critics, programmers, academics and distributors who chose Hitchcock’s film “Vertigo” as the top film of all time. This is a major achievement, beating out Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” for the first time. Of the many American films involving private and public detectives, the most praised films are identified as film noir, a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime

dramas, especially those steeped in the greedy, violent, misogynistic and criminal perspectives of the anti-heroic. Many critics suggest that these films were a metaphorical suggestion of society’s evils, with a strong inclination of moral conflict, emptiness and sense of injustice. ECU Chamber Trio Goes Classical

The performance of the ECU Chamber Trio at Oriental’s Old Theater at 7:30pm on Friday, Oct. 19 brings joy and delight to fans of classical music. The performance is presented by the Pamlico Musical Society, a nonprofit organization bringing quality musical entertainment, enrichment and education to Pamlico County. Cellist Emanuel Gruber, formerly the principal cellist of the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, is a celebrated virtuoso whose cello mastery has earned awards from Tel Aviv to St. Petersburg. Violinist Hye-Jin Kim, winner of the 2009 Concert Artists Guild International competition, has played with some of the world’s most distin-

guished orchestras and is praised for playing with beauty and conviction that is unrivaled. Pianist Keiko Sekino performs regularly as a soloist and in chamber groups throughout the US, Europe, and Japan, including the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Seoul Philharmonic and Sekino is the recipient of the prestigious Presser Music Award. Each of these three musicians commands international respect in their own right. Together, the ECU Chamber Trio weaves a night of musical magic, with a repertoire that ranges from familiar classics by Beethoven to intricate and challenging compositions by Mendelssohn and Dvorak. Chuck Brodsky Performs

The Down East Folk Art Society brings Chuck Brodsky to the Trent River Coffee Company on Friday, Oct. 19. It has been said that if Mark Twain was a folksinger, his name could be Chuck Brodsky. This down to earth musical storyteller, with dry, barb-witted social commentary combined with a deep underlying compassion, knows that the best stories are the little things in the lives of everyday people trying to muddle through each day with some grace. His great gift as a writer is to infuse these stories with humanity and humor, making them resonate profoundly with listeners. His spoken introductions to his songs can be as

spellbinding as his colorful lyrics, which he brings to life with a well-travelled voice and a delivery that is both natural and conversational. His groove-oriented strumming and finger picking draw on influences from the mountains of western North Carolina, where he now lives, among other traditional folk subjects. Brodsky’s songwriting inspiration comes from places like the evening news, his family heritage and stories he has gathered on the road. He brings sharp political commentary that is direct and on-point, reminiscent of songs that have opened the eyes of others for 40 years. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of awardwinning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best known as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. ‘Bugsy Malone, Jr.’ Hits the Stage

RiverTowne Players open its 11th season with flappers and fedoras as the Rising Stars hold a production of the wild and wacky musical, “Bugsy Malone, Jr.” The young cast is sure to please with this humorous musical. Based on the 1976 movie musical “Bugsy (cont. on page 12)

Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital.

Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

Alan Parker wrote the script, and the lyrics and music were written by Paul Williams, who also wrote the music for “The Muppet Movie.” Characters with names like Dandy Dan, Blousey Brown, Fat Sam, Fizzy, Oscar De Velt, Tallulah and Lena Marelli will sing and dance their way into the hearts of audiences. The story revolves around a non-violent gang war fought with “splurge blasters” which spray forth silly string. Fat Sam runs one of the most popular clubs in town and is in danger of being closed down by his business rival, Dandy Dan. Along comes Bugsy Malone, a lady’s man and a definite asset to Fat Sam, until Bugsy caught the eye of Sam’s girlfriend Tallulah, even though he had set his design on showgirl Blousey Brown. Originally written for children, “Bugsy Malone, Jr.” explores the roaring 20s decade, Prohibition and the Great Depression, as well as entertain with the catchy, swinging score.

Painting Workshop with Dan Nelson

Carolina Creations in New Bern is sponsoring a three-day workshop, “Unlocking the Six Secrets of Great Landscape Painting in New Bern,” with Dan Nelson of Raleigh from 9am4:30pm daily, Oct. 25-27. The workshop is held at the Francoeur’s art studio in New Bern. Participants may work in oils or acrylics, and the workshop is open to all skill levels. The concentration for the workshop is on how to construct a captivating landscape portrait. The secrets and insights Nelson shares are very important to creating landscapes, but so is their order. Students will learn the step-bystep thought process that results in beautiful landscape paintings including focused light, intentional composition, rich texture, inviting perspective, balanced color and believable objects. This is not a medium-specific class, but Nelson is going to paint with acrylics for the under-painting and oils on the top layer. Nelson’s acrylics are available for use if participants don’t want to bring their own. Oils do not have to be used, and the paintings may be completely created with acrylics if desired. Nelson has been an artist since an early age. As an adult, he worked in commercial art and fine art, dealing with nearly every conceivable medium. Well known for painting very large murals at festivals, he is also a gifted speaker and instructor. He not only teaches the “how” of painting, he also teaches the “why.” Nelson demonstrates and students paint each day. RIVER CITY Woman’s Club Hosts Tournament

The Oriental Women’s Club is hosting a golf tournament on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Minnesott Golf and Country Club, a short drive from Oriental, to raise funds for charitable work in Pamlico County and elsewhere. Registration deadline is Oct. 12. The tournament will use the Super Ball format with men, women and mixed teams competing for awards and cash prizes, including $5,000 for a Hole-in-One on the 5th hole. Individuals not registered as a foursome will be placed in a foursome for play. The tournament fee is $60 per individual and includes green fee, golf cart and lunch. Sign in begins at 8am with a shotgun start at 9am. A continental breakfast will be available during this period. There will be a 50/50 raffle, auction and many awards and cash prizes. Last year, the Chili Festival donated proceeds to Craven Community College Scholarship Foundation, Craven-Cherry Point Child Development Center, Havelock Boys and Girls Club and Girl Scouts Rainbow Service Unit among others. In its past 30 years, the NC Chili Festival in Havelock has donated more than $215,000 to local nonprofits within the community. The festival is held at Walter B. Jones Park, Havelock, and covers a two-day span of events and entertainment. From 5-9pm on Friday guests can expect a chicken wing competition and a free concert, featuring Cold Biscuit, a New Bern based band that plays a plethora of music including gospel, blues, bluegrass and beach music. On Saturday, the red and green chili competition as well as the salsa competition will be from 10am5pm and The Yams are slated to perform onstage from 12:30-3:30pm. In addition to the competitions and live music there will be arts and crafts, food, vendors and live entertainment throughout the festival grounds each day, and displays from MCAS Cherry Point and the City of Havelock are sure to entertain. There are activities for the children, such as bounce rooms and slides, face painting, Pedro helicopter tours, race cars and fire trucks. Vendors display crafts, art, hobbies, purses, jewelry and other household items and clothing accessories. Food vendors have everything from funnel cakes to crab dip and a large variety of non-alcoholic beverages available. Parking is free, plentiful and within easy walking distance. Bring the family for two days of live music, chili celebrations and competitions and plenty of fun.

A Craven Chocolate Explosion!

Chocolate lovers have the perfect place to be this October for the first annual Craven Chocolate Explosion!, dubbed as a premier chocolate experience. Held in the newly-renovated New Bern Riverfront Convention Center in historic downtown New Bern from Oct. 11-14, this new event is hosted by The Family History Society of Eastern North Carolina and is sure to please. The event idea blossomed out of a love for all things chocolate. There will be exhibitors, tastings, classes, demonstrations, kids’ activities, costumed characters, door prizes, best-in-show chocolate contests, the Chocolatini Preview Party and more. An admission ticket is $5 and includes five individual tasting tickets to sample the mouth14

watering creations from the exhibitors who have varieties of delectable chocolate treats available to sample and purchase. Children age 12 and under are admitted free and may use their parent’s tasting tickets if parents are willing to share. Additional tasting tickets are also available during the event. With the admission ticket, each chocoholic receives a wristband good for the day, including “in and out privileges,” allowing event participants to go enjoy the wonderful MumFest activities that will take place during the weekend, such as the beautiful SeaFair mega yacht that will be anchored behind the Convention Center.

For the first installment of the Craven Chocolate Explosion!, a portion of every $5 admission ticket will be donated to assist the Dolde Family in acquiring a Guardian Angel Service Dog for their 2-year-old daughter Bella, who was recently diagnosed with Type-1 Juvenile Diabetes. The trained Labrador retriever will be able to detect when Bella’s blood sugar is too low or high and alert her parents. This is especially helpful during the night as she has to be awakened several times to monitor her blood sugar. The trained service dog will allow her to lead a more normal life. Ghostwalk 2012 Spirited through Time

Spirited characters haunt the streets and buildings of historic downtown New Bern this year from 6:30-9:30pm on Thursday, Oct. 25 and from 5:30-9:30pm on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27 for New Bern Historical Society’s annual Ghostwalk. Participants can expect ghost sightings throughout the cemetery, and spirited entertainment is presented at both theaters. This annual tradition turns 22 this year, and should make for a spooky and entertaining few

evenings. Ghosts share stories of their mortal existence at 20 sites in downtown New Bern, including Cedar Grove Cemetery, Miss Gertrude Caraway’s house, two historic theaters and many other homes, churches and businesses. Participants listen to tales of Civil War soldiers while wandering through soldier encampments on the banks of the Neuse River. Be sure to take the children to Agony Alley, where kids of all ages are entertained with thrills and games in a kid-friendly haunted house. Ghostwalk tickets for adults are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
