Celebrating New Bern ’s Art Scene New Bern will be overflowing with art when the 2012 Craven Arts Festival comes to town from 10am-4pm on Saturday, Sept. 29 and noon-4pm on Sunday, Sept. 30. The New Bern Riverfront Convention Center hosts artists of all types displaying their works in booths throughout the weekend. The booths feature handmade jewelry, painting, pottery, mixed media, photography, sculpture, fiber arts and furniture, most of which will be available for purchase by festival goers. Attendees also have a chance to register for special workshops to experiment with different techniques or learn skills to help them succeed as creative professionals. There will also be demonstrations from artists, crafts for children and adults, live music and theatrical performances. During the festival, a sculpture will be created using only materials contributed by the community with a specific theme in mind. The community as a whole will be asked to bring one or more items to the festival pertaining to a certain theme, and, with the help of local artists and volunteers, place them to create the sculpture. Attendees of all ages are able to observe this process of creating a community sculpture, but also take part in the build and be named as a contributing artist to the piece. A second community sculpture will be constructed during the two-day festival period using post-consumer products, which are any household or commercial products that have served their original, intended uses. Attendees can observe this entire process and after the festival has come to an end, the sculpture will be placed in the Sculpture Park at the corner of Middle and Broad streets, allowing the whole community to enjoy the finished product. Based on the belief that the creative process involved in self-expression through art helps people with a variety of issues, art therapy uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance the mental, emotional and physical well-being of individuals of all ages. and reducing stress levels. There will be an area during the festival tailored specifically to allow adults to experience the joys of art. They have the opportunity to create a personal and unique work of art to be cherished and shared with others for many years to come. There will be several booths set up on Saturday where kids get hands-on experience with various art-related activities. Each “Kids’ Kraft” booth offers a different activity or art project to allow children exposure to multiple types and forms of art. Most of these activities or projects provide the opportunity for children to create art that they can keep and take home. Saturday evening, ticketed guests are treated to a variety of activities aimed at stimulating the senses. There will be treats from The Chelsea restaurant, art therapy workshops and demonstrations, a stage of entertainment, raffle, wine tasting and awards party for the Bernie Awards. Nonprofit arts organizations are on hand to share information throughout the weekend. The festivities run from 10am-4pm on Saturday, Sept. 29, with workshops running from 9am-5pm. The wine tasting and Bernie Award party begins at 7pm on Saturday. The festival reopens at noon on Sunday, Sept. 30 and the activities and workshops come to an end at 4pm. There are fees for the workshops, but the rest of the fun offered is completely free. For more information regarding the festival, call the Craven Arts Council at 252-638-2577 or email cravenarts@cravenarts.org.

ARTS NC Meets French Impressionism

Brenda Behr is no stranger to oil painting. Her dad gifted Behr her first set of oils and private painting lessons when she was just 10 years old. Behr will be the featured artist at Carolina Creations, Sept. 1- Oct. 31. An opening reception is planned during ArtWalk, from 5-8pm on Friday, Sept. 14. She will be on hand demonstrating and answering questions about her art throughout the evening. Behr holds an master’s degree from Syracuse University and has studied with the late Robert E. Wood, Cheng-Khee Chee, Frank Webb, Don Andrews, Albert Handell, John de la Vega and Susan Sarback. Sarback is a former student of Henry Hensche, an American painter linked to renowned French impressionist painter Claude Monet. (cont. on page 8)

ARTS (cont. from page 7) The French impressionists set out to paint light. Light is determined not only by the time of day and the season of the year, but whether it’s a sunny or an overcast day. These things affect the temperature with which a painting will be executed. Cool and warm is as important now to Behr’s paintings as are tonal value and composition. Behr will be teaching two plein air workshops on the New Bern waterfront Sept. 29-30 during the upcoming Craven Arts Festival. Her watercolor workshop will wet the feet of watercolorists ready to take a step outside. In the oil workshop, those ready to explore color temperature as it applies to plein air painting are encouraged to enroll. For more information about Behr’s show at Carolina Creations, contact the gallery at 252633-4369, or visit www.carolinacreations.com. The gallery is located at 317 Pollock St. and is open seven days a week.

Artists at Carolina Colours Pavilion

Three artists from New Bern will exhibit their paintings at the Pavilion at Carolina Colours Sept. 1-26. Rafael Belliard, Tess Luper and Nell Maha come together and combine their talents and years of experience to produce a showcase which features oils, acrylics and Asian ink brush. Luper studied water-based acrylics, but her choice of mediums are acrylic and ink. She has been featured in several Miami galleries and also at the Friendly Center Auditorium when she moved from Miami to Greensboro. She moved to New Bern in 1995, and has won awards at the Bank of the Arts and has been artist of the month twice at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library. The exhibit she has on display at the pavilion is the third installment of a series called “The Forest Floor,” of which the first two installments have already sold. She includes a story with each painting. An Asian ink brush painter and calligrapher, Maha also works with acrylics. She uses the acrylics for their strong colors and her paintings mirror this, being bold and direct. Along with being exhibited in the US in Minnesota, Florida and North Carolina, she has been exhibited internationally in Toronto, Canada, Pusan and Seoul, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. She is a member of the Craven Arts Council and the current president of the Twin Rivers Artists Association. Belliard is a native of the Dominican Republic and moved to New Bern eight years ago. He began painting as a teenager, once using water-based acrylics and now exclusively painting with oils. Belliard paints beautiful landscapes, many in vivid detail. He has been exhibited in the Dominican Republic and has also been the artist of the month in New Bern. The exhibit is free. To get to the gallery, enter the golf shop entrance, open daily from 9am6pm, and follow the exhibit hanging in the halls around to the foyer inside the main entrance. All paintings are available for purchase. The artists’ names, phone numbers and the prices of their artwork are on each piece.

‘The Rainmaker’ Pours into Civic Center

Written by N. Richard Nash, directed by Bill Hand and produced by Sue Baldwin, “The Rainmaker” is set in the west during a horrific drought. It focuses on a girl whose family is equally worried about her lack of suitors as they are about the lack of rain. The family tries multiple schemes to marry their plain daughter off, but to no avail. That is, until a man who claims to be a “rainmaker” arrives. Intrigued by his melodic tones and theatrical speech, the family pays him $100 if he will create rain. The rainmaker uses his skills to woo the young girl, teaching her that she has had an inner beauty all along, and with the rain there is love. The shows are at the New Bern Civic Theater at 8pm on Sept. 14-15 and 21-22 and 2pm on Sept. 16 & 23. Tickets are $17 in advance and $19 at the door. Student and active duty military tickets are $10 with identification. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 252-633-0567 or by ordering online at www. newberncivictheatre.org.

Featured Artist Michaelé Rose Watson

A major sculpture installation, “1000 Eggs of Limitless Possibilities,” by New Bern artist Michaelé Rose Watson, is the featured exhibit during September and October at New Bern ArtWorks & Company. An artist’s reception will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, Sept. 14 at the gallery. The installation features 1,000 stoneware, porcelain and terra cotta eggs, some made from clay deposits in Craven County. The display will include four sizes of eggs. There are 889 fiveinch eggs, 100 10-inch eggs, 10 28-inch eggs and central to the project, one 36-inch egg with a life form emerging from it. Glazes are minimal and in neutral colors. The eggs are presented on a raised spiral pedestal framework to form an undulating flow for the eggs to rest on, creating a harmonious

repetition of shape with the changing sizes repeated 1,000 times. “The idea is to focus on the inner meaning of the mysterious, unknowable future, our future, as it relates to an egg, and the world inside the egg, versus seeing only a decorated glazed surface,” explained Watson. “With so much uncertainty in our world these days, it’s essential that we believe there will always be more possibilities and brighter choices for the future.” For more information on this featured artist, or any other events featured by New Bern ArtWorks, visit www.newbernartworks.com. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best know as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century.

The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

‘100 Lunches’ Hits the Stage

The hilarious “100 Lunches,” written by Jack Sharkley and Leo W. Sears and directed by Sandy Murray, is coming to the Old Theater in Oriental at 7:30pm on Sept. 7-8 and 14-15. The play follows mystery playwright Chuck Reynolds, played by Per Erichsen, as he embarks on several lunches with his nemesis, theater critic Charity Starr, played by Elaine Creel. She asks him

to advise her in the writing of her first mystery play which she is struggling to complete. With each small vignette they evolve from being two opposing people into characters who learn what is special about the other. Chuck’s housekeeper Glinda, his daughter Terry, and neighbor Yolanda move the story along as the main characters mature and change. Georgette Rush plays the endless line of loosely related waiters, blending into different personas that will keep the audience laughing and excited about the next restaurant Chuck and Charity will attend. Tickets are $12 and are available at Village Hardware and Nautical Wheelers in Oriental and Bank of the Arts, New Bern. For more information, call the theater at 252-249-0477. New Bern Magazine

SOUND Chamber Music Festival is 10

The Carolina Chamber Music Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary season Sept. 11-15 and Feb. 17-23, 2013. Founded and directed by cellist Jennifer Lucht and harpist Anna Reinersman, the Music Festival begins with three varied September programs held in historic downtown New Bern. Programs have something for everyone – the magical combination of strings and flute, an evening of music by Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach and the world concert premiere of the chamber opera “The Ghost Train” by acclaimed composer in residence, Paul Crabtree. Festival concerts are paired with interactive events including post-concert Meet the Artists receptions, pre-concert discussions and informal question-and-answer sessions with the artists. This season, CCMF welcomes its largest complement of artists to date. Returning instrumentalists affiliated with leading organizations including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops and ECU are joined by six celebrated singers and award-winning conductor Mark Shapiro. The September event opens with a Classical Lunch from noon-1pm on Tuesday, Sept. 11, an event of beautiful music for strings and flute that includes music by Haydn and Beethoven. Audiences are invited to enjoy the event from standard audience seating or bring a lunch to enjoy at table seating. Tickets are $15. Hosted by Public Radio East personality Finley Woolston, Bach after Work is from 6-7pm on Thursday, Sept. 13 and starts with a pre-concert wine and cheese reception at 5:30pm followed by performances of works for strings, piano, flute and voice by master Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Tickets are $20 and space is limited. The Carolina Chamber Music Festival concludes its festivities with “The Ghost Train” on Saturday, Sept. 15, a deceptively funny thriller for six singers and an instrumental ensemble based on the 1923 play by Arnold Ridley. Oriental Welcomes Steel Wheels

The Pamlico Musical Society is bringing The Steel Wheels to Oriental’s Old Theater, 609 Broad Street, Oriental at 7:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 29. When The Steel Wheels take the stage, fans of Americana music are in for a night of fresh acoustic excitement. From fire-in-the-belly spirit to polished storytelling, this four-member band takes its audience on a musical ride they won’t soon forget. Lead vocals from Trent Wagler is complemented by supporting vocals from mandolin player Jay Lapp. Bass player Brian Dickel and fiddler Eric Brubaker join in to produce heartrending harmonies. Steeped in the lyrical traditions of their native Shenandoah Valley, The Steel Wheels celebrate the past while putting a decidedly original spin on old-time Americana themes. Their first album, “Red Wing,” spent 13 weeks on the Top 40 American radio charts, while the band’s second album, “Lay Down, (cont. on page 16) New Bern Magazine

of Core Sound, opening Aug. 31 and continuing through March 2, 2013. The core of this exhibition is the collection of Lawrence Earley’s evocative photographs of the wooden workboats built in the fishing villages of the Core Sound region. Earley has been photographing the wooden workboats of the Core Sound region since 1985. In 2005, sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council, he began to document them more intensively, photographing surviving examples of these vessels and interviewing boat builders, fishermen and other local residents. Forty-five of his photographs were exhibited at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center on Harkers Island in 2008. The following year, the exhibition expanded and traveled to the NC Museum of History in Raleigh, and then to the NC Museum of Transportation in Salisbury. To help illustrate the variety of distinctive boat-building traditions of the Core Sound’s different communities, the exhibit will supplement Earley’s photographs with three full-sized skiffs on loan from the museum, including a 16-foot motorized skiff that was owned and worked by Leckler Lewis, a lifelong resident of Stacy in Carteret County, a reproduction of the 1921 sail skiff, the Annabelle and a pole skiff built by Jarrett Bay boat designer Gary Davis which was constructed during a boat building demonstration at the Core Sound Museum.

30, 75, 50 or 100 miles on fully-supported routes. At the conclusion of each day’s ride, cyclists are greeted by volunteers, a delicious, hot meal, ice cold beverages and live entertainment. Cyclists receive rider numbers, an event T-shirt and cue sheets at check-in. All cyclists are required to submit a waiver to the National MS Society before participating in the event. Children under 12 years of age are not permitted to participate. All participants under the age of 18 must submit a signed, notarized waiver before participating in the event and be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years of age. All cyclists must wear a helmet while riding and must obey all traffic and event rules. To register online, visit msbike.org. For more information about this year’s event, email Elizabeth Robson at elizabeth.robson@ nmss.org or call 800-FIGHT-MS.
