Mum’s the Word By Katie Coleman Chrysanthemums are in full bloom in the Tryon Palace gardens and cooler weather is quickly approaching, which could only mean it’s festival season – and Mumfest is one of the best. The award-winning festival returns to historic downtown New Bern on Oct. 12-13. Opportunities are endless as guests can discover pottery, crafts, art, plants and a variety of delicious food. Mumfest has all the staples of a traditional festival, including street performers, live entertainment, arts & crafts and rides. Some unique additions set this festival apart from the rest, however. The Little River Winery mobile tasting room will make a return appearance on Craven Street. For just $5, festival goers over 21 can stop by and try a variety of wines produced with North Carolina grapes. The Little River Winery carries a line of semi-sweet fruit wines in addition to its traditional blends. During Mumfest, Union Point Park hosts the 13th annual Boat Show. This event is like a separate festival dedicated to all things outdoors. There will be information on backpacking, cycling, camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, kayaking, running and

sailing – all the latest in recreation and adventure. Tryon Palace will have its own events and specials during Mumfest. The gardens will be overflowing with chrysanthemums, and the view is well worth the visit. Tryon Palace will offer free garden admission Friday through Sunday. The site also offers its biannual Heritage Plant Sale on Friday and Saturday during Mumfest. Gardeners will be on hand to answer your planting questions, and be sure to check out the selection of unique, rare and historic plants. To close out the festival weekend, New Bern Parks and Recreation is offering the Mumfest 5K on Oct. 13. The race begins at 7:30am with the start and finish at Union Point Park. The course is flat and winds its way through downtown New Bern. Mumfest is a whirlwind of an event, with something happening on every street corner. Stop by both days to make sure you get to take part in everything the festival has to offer. For more information, be sure to visit www.mumfest.com.

ARTS Art Show Gives to Charity

The studio that sponsors a variety of paint-yourown pottery classes is hosting a competition that will give the proceeds to the winner’s choice of charity. The Accidental Artist, a pottery studio with galleries in downtown New Bern and Greenville, has been working with contestants in the Accidental Art Show since September. All entries had to be completed and fired by Oct. 1 and will be on display for the remainder of the month to collect votes. The participants were given a wavy platter to paint and had to specify a choice of charity, and now The Accidental Artist customers have the chance to purchase votes to choose a winner. Each studio will have a grand prize winner whose chosen charity will receive the money raised for that entry, plus a matching donation from The Accidental Artist of up to $500. The Grand Prize winner will also receive a three month pottery club membership and a $50 gift certificate. Second and third place winners’ selected charities will receive the funds raised by their entries. Entries receiving more than 25 votes will have checks mailed to their respective charities in the amounts collected on their behalf. All remaining funds raised will be donated to the grand prize entry’s selected charity. Voting will continue for the duration of October,

and the winner will be revealed on Nov. 7, during The Accidental Artist’s customer appreciation night. For more information, visit www.theaccidentalartistnc. com.

If

Walls Could Talk By Katie Coleman

A recently discovered photo of the AttmoreOliver house gives a glimpse into the history of the Broad Street home. The residence currently houses the New Bern Historical Society and its curator, Jim Hodges, explained the history of the house. The first to inhabit the house when it was built as a simple story-and-a half frame house in 1790 was Samuel Chapman, a veteran of the Continental Army and later the clerk of the Craven County Superior Court. Upon his death in 1807, he left it to his daughter Caroline Eliza. Caroline and her husband, Henry Waring, sold the house to Isaac Taylor in 1834. Taylor was a successful businessman and also owned a Craven County plantation named “Glen Burnie.” The house was renovated and occupied by Taylor’s daughter Mary and her husband, George Attmore. Mary was willed the house with the death of Isaac Taylor on July 4, 1846.

New Bern Magazine

George Attmore was left to care for their seven children when Mary Taylor Attmore died an untimely death in 1852. Their daughter, Hannah Taylor Attmore, inherited the house after George Attmore died in 1859. She married William Oliver, a merchant and community leader, and they had eight children. Based on artifacts found during an excavation of the basement in 1962, it is believed that the house was possibly used as a Union hospital during the Civil War. The Attmore-Oliver family retained the house, and continued to live there after the war. After the death of both of her parents, unmarried Mary Taylor Oliver took over the house in 1908. She rented rooms in the Attmore-Oliver House to single female teachers, one of whom was Mary Hall Heath. A cedar tree was planted in her memory in the Christ Church yard, the Molly Heath Tree. Mary Taylor Oliver died in 1951, having lived for 91 years. She left the home to her five nephews. By this time, the house had fallen into severe disrepair. John Taylor and John Dunn of the New Bern Historical Society recognized the potential of the home and decided to pursue the purchase of the AttmoreOliver House. It bought the house for $30,000 and spent another $30,000 on renovations. The debt was retired with a ‘mortgage burning ceremony’ on March 20, 1963. The New Bern Historical Society has preserved the house, which now serves as a museum and the Society offices.
