New Bern Celebrates For 22 years, New Bern residents and visitors have looked forward to the Craven Arts Council & Gallery’s annual Sunday Jazz Showcase, and this year’s event will not disappoint. Headlining the 23rd year of traditional jazz is the everpopular Dave Bennett (leader and clarinet), Lynn Roberts (vocals), John Brown (bass), John Hanks (drums) and John Salmon (piano). These talented artists will come together on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Hilton Riverfront Hotel. The Sunday Jazz Showcase began in 1990 as the Sunday Jazz Buffet with one performance. Because of its popularity, the event was soon expanded to two shows – an afternoon performance at 1:30pm and an evening performance at 7pm. Each show lasts approximately two hours, with two 15-minute breaks. A cash bar and snacks are available.

About the Artists Michigan clarinetist Dave Bennett is an authentic musical prodigy who brings to life the classic sound and music of Benny Goodman with incredible technique, style, beauty of tone, and n a t u ra l n e s s . Bennett began playing at 10 years of age and taught himself how to play Goodman songs by ear, listening to a tape given to him by his grandfather. At 12, he was invited to the bandstand of the famous Sweet Basil jazz club in New York to sit in with trumpet great Doc Cheatham.

New Bern Magazine

His mature stage presence, knowledge of the dates and details of Goodman recordings, and his penchant for wire-rim glasses, spats, and double-breasted suits transport listeners back to the time and mood of Benny Goodman’s swing era. In his Goodman tunes, he demonstrates an uncanny ability to “cop” many of Goodman’s famous riffs and lines, balanced by substantial amounts of “free blowing” that still evokes the Goodman sound and style. Since 2006, he has appeared periodically as a guest soloist in the band of internationally recognized Canadian vibraphonist Peter Appleyard. He was Appleyard’s guest in 2007 at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Bern, Switzerland, and here in New Bern for our 20th Showcase. He also has performed in a trio setting with legendary guitarist (and Goodman Band alumnus) Bucky Pizzarelli. Those who have been privileged to share musical moments with Lynn Roberts, are grateful that she has prevailed as one of the few stars to bridge the decades. Her dedication and success have provided us with a legacy of an endless flow of wonderful music from the Big Band era to the present. Roberts started her exciting career with Charlie Spivak at the age of 15. Songbird Roberts spent one year with Charlie, a year with Vincent Lopez, five years with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, 10 years with Benny Goodman and four years with Harry James. She also shared the spotlight with Sammy Kay for a year and a half, on the ABC-TV show “Music from Manhattan.” She has the distinction of being the only girl singer to have sung with all the superstar band leaders. Bassist, composer, educator and actor John Brown is a native of Fayetteville and currently resides in Durham. He began performing with

the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra at age 13, and he was playing principal bass with that orchestra and performing with the Florence (SC) Symphony while still in high school. A graduate of the School of Music at UNCGreensboro and the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law, Brown currently serves as director of the jazz program and associate professor of the practice of music at Duke University. Brown has performed in the United States and abroad with artists like Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Nnenna Freelon, Diahann Carroll, Rosemary Clooney, Nell Carter, Lou Donaldson and Slide Hampton at notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Blue Note, Blues Alley, the Hollywood Bowl and major jazz festivals. Welcomed back is John Hanks, a percussionist living in Durham. He took his first lessons on snare drum at the age of 7. He continued his training throughout middle and high school and, in 1980, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from UNC School of the Arts. He teaches percussion in the Duke music department and is the faculty musician for the Duke dance program, where he accompanies dance classes, teaches music and maintains the dance program’s website. A musician for the American Dance Festival since 1984, he accompanied them to Seoul, Korea, in 1991-92. From 1992-2003, he was per-

cussionist for the Jazz Dance World Congress. He played drums for the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, 1991-2008 and the Gregg Gelb Swing Band since its inception in 1991. As a jazz drummer, he has performed with many notable artists, including: John Brown, Wyclif Gordon, Jon Metzger, Mose Allison, the Glen Miller Band, Stephanie Nakasian, Butch Thompson, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache and Mary Lou Williams. Pianist John Salmon, professor of music at UNC-Greensboro, has distinguished himself on four continents, as both a classical and jazz artist. His versatility often produces striking juxtapositions. In one concert with the NC Symphony, Wilmington, Salmon performed Beethoven’s “2nd Piano Concerto” in the first half, and then, in the second half, Dave Brubeck’s “Elementals” for orchestra and jazz trio (with Brubeck’s sons, bassist Chris Brubeck and drummer Dan Brubeck). Salmon is particularly well-known for his association with Dave Brubeck, whose music he has recorded and edited in depth. Brubeck has dedicated two piano pieces to Salmon, “The Salmon Strikes” and “Bach Again.” Tickets are $15-$35 and can be purchased in advance at Bank of the Arts. Piedmont Blues at Cullman Hall

The Piedmont Blues Show, a special celebration featuring Lightnin’ Wells and Jon Shain, is coming to the Cullman Performance Hall at the NC History Center at Tryon Palace at 8pm on Friday, March 2. North Carolina is home to a specialized type of finger picking guitar music often referred to as the Piedmont Blues. This free-flowing and distinct style was popular from the 1920s to 1940s when it began to die out. Lightnin’ Wells has spent most of his adult life studying with the last of the original Piedmont blues performers such as John Dee Holeman and Big Boy Henry, and has become an icon of this dynamic blues style. Jon Shain learned from some of the originals as well and his passion for American roots music shows in his engaging stage presence. When the two of them get together, the audience is in for an earful of Piedmont Blues. Tickets are $20 general admission; $18 for Down East Folk Arts Society and Council of Friends members and active duty military; and $10 for students. Tickets are general admission and may be purchased in advance at Bank of the Arts or the NC History Center in New Bern, or may be reserved by calling 252-633-6444. See www.downeastfolkarts.org for further information.

A gifted vocalist, the singer captures hearts with her natural charm and transports audiences to another era with her rich, sultry style. “The New Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz” describes Nakasian as “one of the most important jazz singers in the world today.” Critics have compared her to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Margaret Whiting, praising her flawless delivery and playful improvisation. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best know as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. A Little Murder with Dinner? Artemus Ward is the irritable head of the Ward Books empire. Well, he was. Now he’s sitting dead at his table in the Manor Restaurant. Now let’s meet the other folks in the place: Alexis, his daughter, runs around endlessly quoting Emily Dickinson. She’s a widow five times over, and her every mate was found dead at the dinner table. Her brother Reginald is a cold, scheming fellow who wants to lock her up and take over the business. Then there’s the conniving lawyer Eileen Morrow who has her eye on Ward Books’ millions. And what about these others in characters? Jeannie Dell is owner of the Manor, her business hopelessly in debt. Bernie, the useless nephew of Artemus Ward. What about the mysterious coroner, Dr. Bullfinger, who conveniently showed up? Or Major, the cut-throat reporter friend that Dr. Bullfinger has called in to help solve the crime? Who did it? Why? How? Can you solve the crime? Welcome to the deadliest dinner in New Bern – Athens of the South’s newest mystery dinner theater production, Bill Hand’s “Murder in the Manor,” is slated for performances at the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina, New Bern, at 7pm on Feb. 3-4 and 10-11. Flounders of

New Bern will cater the events. “For this production, we’re reviving the first mystery play I wrote,” Hand said. “The show has been performed numerous times over the years, and always with success. It’s a lot of fun and we have a really good cast.” The characters in the show visit the tables between scenes, answering questions to help guests in their sleuthing work and as always, guests will have an opportunity to win a prize by solving the crime. Dinner and show costs $30; as an experiment, the group is also offering show-only tickets for $15. All dinnerincluded tickets must be purchased at least one day in advance. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more, for active military, seniors 65 or older and for youth 16 or under. Tickets are available through Bank of the Arts, 317 Middle St., New Bern; by phone at 252229-4977; or online at athensmysterydinners. yolasite.com.

Hudson Speaks at Lunch & Learn The New Bern Historical Society and the NC Humanities Council are featuring a special program as part of its Lunch & Learn series at 1:30pm on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at The Chelsea. The guest speaker is acclaimed North Carolina author Marjorie Hudson who will present “George Moses Horton: Uncovering and Celebrating Lost Black History.” Horton was the first black man to publish a book in the South; a man who sold poems to raise money to buy his freedom from slavery; and one of the rare 19th century poets to make a pretty good living by the word. He published three books of poems and an autobiography. The story of his life and work provides a win-

dow into the world of pre-Civil War rural and college town South, as well as a glimpse into the mind of a fiercely courageous and articulate American. Hudson’s farm is within five miles of Horton’s historic dwelling place near Chapel Hill. She has determined his story is one which should not be forgotten. In this program, Hudson talks about her research methods and her discoveries in uncovering and celebrating the fascinating life and poetry of this accomplished man. Interactive program features several volunteer members reading excerpts from his poems. Tickets are $15 for member and $17 for nonmembers. Advance reservations are required by calling 252-638-8558.

Sheinkin with music and lyrics by William Finn. Evening performances begin at 8pm and are slated for Feb. 16-18 and 23-25 with 3pm matinees planned for Feb. 19 and 26. Advance tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Bank of the Arts. Tickets are $18 at the door. All performances are held at the historic Masonic Theatre, 514 Hancock Street in New Bern. The show is set at a fictional middle school spelling bee somewhere in New York State and features six quirky finalists. Six kids face off in the battle of their lives. They compete against each other as well as members of the audience. Three adults help adjudicate the proceedings: a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a mildly insane vice principal and the Official Comfort Counselor completing his community service to the state of New York. Director John Van Dyke has assembled a hugely talented and entertaining cast. The kids’ roles are played by adults. This is not a children’s production and is recommended for mature audiences. Theater Honors its True Stars Each year, the New Bern Civic Theatre takes time out to salute the individuals who strive to make the theatre the best it can be. These individuals work on and off stage in various capacities, from the headline star to working backstage, to selling tickets. The tributes are bestowed on them in a special ceremony to give them a distinctive moment in the spotlight. This year’s Awards Gala is planned at 7pm on Saturday, Feb. 4, and is open to the public. A reception will follow at Christ Espicopal Church on Middle Street. Cocktail or evening casual is the suggested attire. Admission is free. RSVP’s are appreciated at 252-634-9057. 14

Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären” or “bears.”

While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.
