ARTS CHAIR-ity Event

Add a unique art piece to your home or business while also benefiting Habitat for Humanity of Craven County. The third annual fundraising event will feature a silent auction of chairs that are creatively painted by 20 local artists and students from New Bern High School and the Craven Community College fine arts department. There will also be a live auction at 1pm on Saturday, May 19. The silent auction, which runs from 10am-2:15pm, will feature the painted chairs and other items, including an opportunity to win a black and white commissioned portrait from nationally recognized artist Marsha Mills. New this year, Habitat will host an “Artist Alley” of booths for local artists. Expected participants will display and sell pottery, jewelry, paintings, quilts and woodwork with a portion of the proceeds gifted back to the organization. Local architects will also participate by displaying prepared plans and models of potential Habitat homes. All proceeds will go toward the latest Habitat build on E Street in New Bern. “This newest home, number 53, is really special. It will be our first totally handicapped accessible home as the 13-year-old son of the new homeowner is a paraplegic, crippled at the age of 2 by meningitis. With the help of Marines from Cherry Point, the lot has been cleared and footings should be poured in the next two months with completion in six months. The hope is that this fundraiser will offset the incremental costs to build an ADA home and thus, the homeowner payment will not be any higher than average,” said Mark Beard, Habitat’s newly appointed executive director. This event will take place at the Habitat’s ReStore, 930 Pollock St. Barbeque dinners will

Art Reception Planned

Picasso once stated that he did not trust pure abstraction to shoulder the burden of meaning. Bruce Nelson does not necessarily agree, yet even when his paintings ebb toward pure abstraction, elements such as the hull of cargo ships, the water, the sky, buildings, containers, bridges or scaffolding are never wholly sacrificed; abstracted, but still very intelligible. New Bern ArtWorks and Company will host an art reception featuring the work of Nellsmith from 5 to 8pm on Friday, May 11 at Studio 323, “Home of the Working Artisans.” When painting, Nellsmith finds that he cannot accept a movement in the composition that does not contain a certain raw or edgy quality about it. This gives the work a furtive or shifty quality that keeps him engaged. The working and re-working process that he has proved to master, give the paintings an inner life, its own independent history. Nellsmith received a master’s degree MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in Athens. He is currently the art department chair and professor of art at Newberry College, where he has taught for 19 years. New Bern ArtWorks is located in downtown New Bern at 323 Pollock St. For additional details, call 252-634-9002 or visit www.newbernartworks.com.

uring a time of war, there are men who bravely step forward to fight the battle. In the 1940s, there was an elite group of service members who not only wanted to serve, but also became part of an effort that changed the history of the US military. As the country prepared for war, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was pressured to give African American men the opportunity to train as pilots. He ordered the Army Air Corps to set up a pilot training program in Tuskegee, Alabama. These valiant pilots were called the Tuskegee Airmen, men who defied prejudices and focused on the mission to become the skilled pilots and fierce fighters they are known for today. The Tuskegee Airmen flew more than 1,500 missions from June 1943 to April 1945, and they are remembered most for their bomber escorts. They painted the tails of their airplanes red and were known by white bomber pilots as “red tail angels” for their valiant aeronautical war techniques. These men not only destroyed the enemy, but also the belief that anyone should be judged by the color of his skin. Such efforts

helped desegregation of all branches of the US military in 1948. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point will commemorate such history, as well as 100 years of Marine Corps aviation, at its 70th air show on May 4-6. This year’s show theme, “Celebrating the Heritage,” was inspired by Paul Ringheiser of Vanceboro, one of the 153 entrants in the biennial themenaming contest. “We received a lot of entries from the North Carolina community, so it was very tough to choose only one,” said Col. Phillip Zimmerman, MCAS Cherry Point commanding officer. “But with an air show showcasing this many great performers, everybody will be a winner.” To complement this year’s theme, visitors will be able to take a “MultiCultural Heritage Walk” with various ethnic performers and informational kiosks for all generations to enjoy throughout the weekend. The Commemorative Air Force Red Tail Squadron will be present with its “Rise Above” traveling movie exhibit, featuring the original movie detailing the Tuskegee Airmen in a 53-foot customNew Bern Magazine

ized trailer with a 180-degree screen. The air show takes off at 5pm on Friday, May 4 with nighttime performances featuring flying from 7:30 to 10pm. Gates will open at 8am Saturday and Sunday and flying is scheduled from 10:30am-4pm. Additional air show highlights include, the Blue Angels, a Marine Air Ground Task Force demonstration, a jet-powered rocket truck, a host of civilian and military demonstrations, a concert with Bill Gentry, Darryl Worley and rising star David Kroll, kids’ fun zone and historic and modern static aircraft displays on the flight line. The night show will include a variety of night-oriented aerial pyrotechnic displays, afterburner flybys, the

roaring afterburner display from the jet-powered rocket truck, skydivers, a wall of fire ordnance demonstration and a large fireworks display to patriotic music. The MCAS Cherry Point air show is the largest air show in the Carolinas and one of the largest military air shows in the southeast. It is also the only air show in North Carolina for 2012. The air show is free and open to the public. For those interested in premium seating, several options are available including bleacher, box and chalet seating. For more information, visit the official website at www.cherrypointairshow.com, or call the information hotline at 252-466-7550.

RIVER CITY Scoundrels Hit the Stage Shield your wallets and hide your wives, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is coming to the New Bern Civic Theatre in May. This Tony nominated musical comedy centers around two con men in the French Riviera. Lawrence Jameson, played by JP Andrews, is a suave, cosmopolitan playboy. Freddy Benson, played by Von Lewis, is an ultra unreliable frat boy. After an attempt to become partners, the two decide that the Riviera is just not big enough for the two of them and they decide to compete to elicit $50,000 from heiress Christine Colgate, played by Katy Rouse-Cowles. The loser must leave town.

Director Keith Boyd said he is proud of this production and the choreography provided by Rivertowne Ballroom. “Rivertowne Ballroom has been a true blessing. They really got into the mood of the show and gave us dances that were both beautiful and very funny. Even in the midst of opening their expanded ballroom, they gave us their time and made us feel at home. This has been a most pleasurable experience,” said Boyd. Performances are at 8pm each Friday and Saturday, May 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19, and at 2pm on Sunday, May 6 and 13. Tickets can be purchased online at www.newberncivictheatre.org, or by calling the box office at 252-633-0567. Admission is $17 in advance and $19 at the door, or $10 with a student or active military ID. All performances are at 414 Pollock St.

“A Sentimental Journey” Under the direction of Philip Evancho, the Craven Community Chorus will take the audience on “A Sentimental Journey” during its 2012 Spring Concert. The chorus will present three performances at 7pm, on Thursday, May 3 and Saturday, May 5 and at 3pm on Sunday, May 6 at Orringer Auditorium. The first half of the program will have a definite French sentiment and include the opening number, one of opera’s most well known arias, the “Flower Duet” from “Lakeme” by Leo Delibes. Another equally famous song “Requiem” (cont. on page 14) New Bern Magazine

In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best know as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s

when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

Splinterville Community Garden Have you ever wanted a garden, but just don’t have the space? The Havelock Board of Commissioners recently approved the development of a community garden and hosted the opening day in April. The garden is located just off Hwy 70 near the old senior center building on the grounds once named “Splinterville.” Splinterville was the common name for the initial housing of two apartment buildings built for those who came to work at MCAS Cherry Point in the 1940s. The site was transferred for other uses and is now home to
