All Get Out Music will once again reverberate throughout Union Point Park in downtown New Bern as the Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival serves up its third installment. Slated for Saturday, June 12, tickets are $10. Gates open at noon and music begins at 1pm. The festival began back in 2008, created in part by the New Bern High School Student Musicians and Songwriters (SMS) and Young Adults Active in the Community (YAAC) as a benefit for SaveDarfur. This year, the philanthropic base of the festival continues, with proceeds going to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. The line-up includes: 1-1:30pm – Arielle Bryant, a female singersongwriter from Raleigh kicks off the third annual event. With a Jason Mraz inspired sound, Bryant has been shaking up the North Carolina music scene with her personal melodies and catchy hooks that always seem to get stuck in your head. 1:35-2:05pm – Junior Astronomers, a highenergy indie rock band based in Charlotte may still be young, but plays with the energy and talent that bands twice their age bring to the table. After playing shows all throughout North Caro8

lina, South Carolina and Georgia, Junior Astronomers are finally making their way to New Bern and are sure to excite the crowd with their unique sound and exciting live performance. 2:10-2:55pm – Hammer No More the Fingers is a three-piece rock group from Durham that has been making waves throughout the country. After being named one of New York’s CMJ Music Festival’s “Top 25 Bands to Hear” by Spin Magazine, more accolades followed, including an invitation to South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, one of the biggest music festivals in the country. 3-3:45pm – Eagle Scout, coming all of the way from Greenville, Ill., is a five piece band that has been compared to Minus The Bear, one of the most well known and talented indie math rock bands. Arriving on the heels of their first full length release, “New Hands,” Eagle Scout brings their catchy choruses and gang vocals to New Bern for the first time. 4-4:45pm – Ocean Is Theory is finally coming back to New Bern after almost a year of being gone. Hailing from Atlanta, Ga., this pop-punk band has been busy supporting their album, “In My Blood Again,” which was re-
Lonnie Walker leased in 2009. Ocean Is Theory tore down the house when they last played New Bern at Broad Street Music and are expected to bring the same energy and talent to the Bernaroo stage. 5-5:45pm – Caleb Caudle & the Bayonets opened Bernaroo last year and have returned this year to the main stage. Caleb brings in a unique blend of rock, Americana and country music topped off with his heartbreaking and incredibly raw lyrics. The band just released its full length album, “Snake River Canyon,” which was engineered by Jon Ashley (Avett Brothers and Band of Horses) and features a guest appearance by Ryan Monroe of Band of Horses. 6-6:45pm – What’s Good, one of the few truly local acts, hails from Jacksonville. The three-piece instrumental is a New Bern favorite, bringing a unique blend of funk, rock, experimental, jazz and even blues to the stage. 7-7:45pm – O’Brother, coming from Atlanta, Ga., just got off of two US tours supporting Manchester Orchestra and Thrice respectively. O’Brother brings an intensity that many only dream of having, their live show often being described as a “wall of sound” in the best way possible. Their captivating lyrics and deep mov-
ing choruses and hooks will leave you wondering how you’ve gone so long without hearing a band of this magnitude. 8-8:55pm – Lonnie Walker is a band that you can’t go through the Triangle without hearing about. Bringing a combination of indie and Americana music, Lonnie Walker is another band that is on the cusp of hitting it big across the country. The band provides a little bit of something for everyone with their unique blend of genres, always leaving the crowd wanting more. 9-9:55pm – All Get Out comes from Columbia, SC, but you won’t see them there much. One of the busiest bands on the circuit, it has played with the likes of Manchester Orchestra, Say Anything, Weezer and Kevin Devine. All Get Out recently played the Bamboozle festival in New Jersey and was named by Spin Magazine as one of the top 25 bands to see along with the likes of Paramore, Weezer, Drake and Something Corporate. All Get Out’s much-anticipated album will be released this year.

Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären,” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety
of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola. 252-635-3232

Ben Watford While Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was intended to be in effect as of Jan. 1, 1863, word was slow to travel. There were no television or radio stations to carry the news, no Internet to broadcast it to the world. But slowly, over the course of two years, word spread to the last remaining African-American slaves who were located in Galveston, Texas. The day exactly, was June 19, 1865 – and as the story has been handed down, excited slaves rejoiced in the street. Today, the celebration is commonly referred to as Juneteenth, an amalgamation of June and nineteen, and is known among the African-American communities notes Tova Harriston of New Bern’s Save the Seed Foundation, “as the very first day of freedom for all African-Americans in the United States.” Juneteenth will be celebrated with an array of events in various New Bern locations thanks to Save the Seed, New Bern’s 300th Committee and Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens. Festivities get kicked off on Thursday, June 17, with an installment of Tryon Palace’s African-American lecture series. “We’ve Come This Far by Faith – The History and Continuing Legacy of Juneteenth for African-Americans” begins at 7pm at the site’s visitor’s center auditorium.
The free lecture features Dr. Zachery Williams, who will discuss the role of religion and culture in the shaping of African-American identity and consciousness over time using insights from thinkers such as Ralph Ellison and black cultural leaders. He will also emphasize how the cultural significance of Juneteenth can empower African-Americans in their continual struggle for human rights and equality. For more information, call 252-514-4900 or visit tryonpalace.org. At 7pm on Friday, June 18, a mass community choir will join voices at Temple Baptist Church, 1500 Kingdom Way, to honor the African-American community. Henry Curry, resident conductor of the NC Symphony will be a special guest for this uplifting, family-friendly concert. On Saturday, join the Save the Seed Foundation and others for The Heritage Ball, beginning at 6:30pm at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased by calling 252-638-6542. The gala event will focus on the freedom and evolution of New Bern’s African-American community with an emphasis on education and achievement. Outstanding citizens from New Bern and the surrounding area will be recognized with special honors going to Ben Watford, Mary Petakins and Nelson McDaniel. Graham Stedman, noted educator, author and motivational speaker, will offer the keynote address. Seating begins at 5pm. A final chance to join the celebration takes place at 2pm Sunday at the Juneteenth Homecoming Picnic & Family Gathering at Union Point Park. Join friends, family members and neighbors for a grand picnic and plenty of stories about New Bern. This free, public event will offer activities which highlight family and community histories. Bring a basket of goodies, your family and join in the fun. “We’ve got a full weekend of events, it promises to be a very nice celebration,” Harriston said. “We’re excited. I hope everyone else gets excited, too.” New Bern Magazine

World’s Biggest Bun New Bern’s Moore’s Barbecue and owner Tommy Moore are taking on a whole new challenge. As the community gathers at Union Point Park on July 4 for the town’s annual celebration, Moore and his team will attempt to assemble the world’s largest open sandwich as a Guinness World Record at 1pm. How big will this barbecue bun be? It’s a secret until July 4th, but promoters claim it will be big enough to feed 300 people in honor of New Bern’s 300th anniversary celebration. Everyone is invited to be there to witness a new chapter in New Bern’s history and, of course, enjoy the fruits of Moore’s labor. The sandwich, made with the Moore family recipe for barbecue and topped with complimentary slaw, will be made available to the public once it makes it mark on the record books. New Bern Magazine

ARTS Honoring Billie Holiday The Eastern Carolina Jazz Cooperative and The Flame Restaurant and Banquet Centre have arranged another great evening of jazz entertainment featuring the area’s finest musicians on Sunday, June 20. This month at Smoke’s Supper Club, the indelible jazz artist Billie Holiday will be celebrated. The concert will spotlight a diverse and talented assembly of vocalists interpreting the songs that Billie made famous. Featured performers include Ciara Di Napoli, John Van Dyke, Andrea “Fran” Primus, Ginger Garner and Jelani Fletcher Allen. Accompanying musicians include jazz pianist, Nathan Hefner; bassist, George Knott; drummer, Glenn Pointe; and saxophonist, Russ Hamby.
The artists will perform a wide variety of Holiday’s songs including her well-known classics “Lover Man” and “God Bless the Child” as well as some of “Lady Day’s” lesser-known gems. Considered one of the best jazz vocalists of all time, Holiday expressed through her music an incredible depth of emotion that speaks of hard 18

times and injustice as well as triumph. The tribute begins at 6pm; doors open at 5. Tickets are $15 and available at Bank of the Arts and the New Bern Farmer’s Market. For additional information, call 252-649-0109.
RiverTowne Takes on a ‘Savage’ This month the RiverTowne Repertory Players will take on the classic comedy “The Curious Savage.” Performances are slated for June 11-12 and 18-19, beginning at 8pm, with 3pm matinees planned for June 13 and 20. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Originally directed by Roxann Belrose, the play was first produced by the Theater Guild and Lewis & Young at the Martin Beck Theatre in New York City in 1950 to rave reviews. The lead role of Ethel was played by Lillian Gish, who starred in one of the first movies ever produced, “Birth of a Nation” in 1915. In New Bern, Sue Baldwin will tackle the role made famous by Gish, playing the elderly woman who has been left $10 million by her husband and attempts to make the best use of it despite the efforts of her stepchildren to get their hands on the dough. They stop at nothing, play goers will soon see – including having her committed to “bring her to her senses.” Since 2002 the Rivertowne Repertory Players have been working the stage at the Masonic Theatre, 516 Hancock St., the country’s oldest theatre still in operation. Through its life it has been the scene of stage plays, benefits, concerts, vaudeville acts, political rallies, school commencements, church services, com-
munity social gatherings, a Confederate arsenals and a hospital. Originally called the Masonic Opera House, the theater celebrated its 200th birthday in 2009. Experience the theater and take in the antics of the Rivertowne Repertory Players. Tickets are available at Bank of the Arts or by calling 252-638-2577.

Red, White & Blue The NC Symphony will pay tribute to the men and women who have kept America safe for generations, as well as some of our country’s distinctive places with a special performance, Red, White & Blue, aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point on Wednesday, June 2. The concert is free and open to the public. US Army Sgt First Class Christal Rheams, a North Carolina native, joins music director Grant Llewellyn and the orchestra in songs such as the World War II hits “Rosie the Riveter” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Opening the program will be Aaron Copland’s unforgettable Fanfare for the Common Man and audiences will
hear the orchestra at full throttle in the Finale from Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” “The symphony is enormously proud to partner with our men and women in uniform and to present these patriotic concerts at military bases around our great state,” says NC Symphony president and CEO, David Chambless Worters. “In keeping with the symphony’s long tradition of statewide service, this is a perfect opportunity to bring the state of North Carolina’s orchestra to our active duty personnel, their families, and their host communities.” The free concert begins at 7:30pm at the Station Theatre. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis and can be picked up at Cherry Point’s Information, Tickets & Tours (ITT) office, as well as the New Bern Sun Journal and the Havelock News. Irish Music Session Slated An informal session of Irish traditional music is planned at Trent River Coffee Co. on Tuesday, June 8. This month, a slow-play session will be offered for beginners at 7pm, followed by the regular session at about 7:40. The session tradition is a vital part of the Irish music. You never know exactly who will be there, or which tunes will be played on a given evening. The New Bern session, which has been held monthly since 1998, usually includes such instruments as button accordion, fiddle, guitar and flute. The repertoire includes Irish jigs, reels, hornpipes and songs. Audience members are welcome to sing along and sit in. There is no cover charge, however, donations for the musicians are always welcome. Call 252-514-2030 for more information. (continued on page 26) New Bern Magazine

Exploring The Lore and Lure of Oriental In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge perched along the Neuse River. Before “orienting” itself to a new name in 1899, Oriental was known as Smith’s Creek. The original name lacked pizzazz for citizens, so a new name was coined by the wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette. Midyette’s wife saw the name on the transom name board of a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island, in 1862. The name board washed ashore and was displayed a few years later at a residence in Manteo she happened to be visiting. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5,000- 6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, with the Oriental Cup Regatta in September or the Neuse River Solo Race in October being among the biggest draws. The town boasts a plethora of activities on the water, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active musical society, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. Find out more about the waterfront town at the Oriental History Museum at 802 Broad St. in Village Square. The museum features items of interest for all ages and is currently open Friday, 11am-3pm, Saturday, noon–4pm and Sunday, 1-4pm. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, which is just a 10-mile scenic drive to Oriental. Exploring Nestled on Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best known as the home to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets throughout the day, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid 1800s, Havelock grew from the 1858 joining of the Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named for accomplished British General Henry Havelock, who had gained popularity at the time for rescuing hostages during a bloody uprising in India. In addition to this community adopting Havelock as its moniker, seven other cities in the world share the general’s namesake. Apart from being a railroad depot, Havelock distinguished itself by being a popular hunting and fishing destination in the late 1800s and on through the early 1930s. Even baseball legends Babe Ruth and Christie Mathewson came down to hunt and visit. Photo albums still exist with pictures of these two greats in hunting gear, posing with locals. The 1940s and World War II brought

with them MCAS Cherry Point. Havelock’s population exploded and with it came economic prosperity for local businesses. Before the MCAS was established, the community housed a modest population of 100 or less. Now, approximately 22,500 people call Havelock home. Since then, Havelock has enjoyed a strong relationship with Cherry Point and those who serve on the base, which is one of the largest employers of both Craven and neighboring Carteret County. Havelock enjoys visitors year round due to annual events like the NC Chili Festival in the fall and the MCAS Cherry Point Air Show held each June, along with natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and the Neuse River. The book chronicles Baron von Graffenried’s account of his and a partner’s efforts to settle a colony of German Palatines and Swiss in 1710 on a tongue of land between the Trent and Neuse rivers. The city, he decided, would be named New Bern in honor of his home, Bern, Switzerland. The hardback book of more than 400 pages is priced at $50 and is available in local bookstores or by mail from The Reprint Company, PO Box 5401, Spartanburg, SC, 29304.
