Air Show Returns to Eastern North Carolina
Grab your earplugs! North Carolina’s largest air show will roar through the skies over Craven and Carteret counties May 2123. That’s right, it’s time once again for the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Air Show, featuring some of the world’s most talented pilots and showcasing some of the military’s most powerful toys. Drawing more than 150,000 guests over its three-day schedule, the air show is one of the most attended annual events in Eastern North Carolina. And with free entry and parking – it’s easy to see why. “Attendees at the Cherry Point Air Show experience a patriotic rush and roar like no other event in our state,” said Bob Kenwood, marketing director for the base. “This is also the perfect venue to check out all the latest military technology, not to mention, interact with your local Marines and sailors.” The Blue Angels return to headline the festivities much to the delight of visitors. This year, they’ll be joined by the Black Daggers, the US Army Special Ops parachute team; the acrobatics of the Red Eagle; Otto the Helicopter; Panchito, a historic B25 bomber used during World War II; and others.

On Friday, May 21, the air show hosts the state’s only night show, featuring afterburners, rocket trucks, aerial pyrotechnics, skydivers, plus a wall of flame – all culminating in the area’s largest fireworks display. Gates for the night show open at 5pm and flying begins at twilight. Saturday and Sunday feature full day shows, with a large variety of military and civilian aerobatic demonstrations and dozens of military static displays. The base gates open at 8am and flying runs from approximately 10:30am to 4:30pm. While all events are free, including parking, there are a limited number of box seats and chalet tickets available. For pricing and availability, call 866-WINGS-NC or visit cherrypointairshow.com. Discounts are available for advance purchases. Shuttle buses will operate throughout the festivities to help people get from parking areas to the tarmac. Keep in mind that the following items are prohibited: pets, glass, coolers, alcohol and any wheeled vehicle other than strollers and wheelchairs. It’s also important to be mindful of the fact that guests are entering a government facility and are subject to searches at any time.

Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bären,” or “bears.” While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington.
New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola. 252-635-3232

Remembering
the War
Generally the center of a battle is not where you want to be, but for those attending the May 8 interpretation of the Battle of New Bern, front and center is exactly the place to be. The battle is just one part of the May 6-9, New Bern 300th anniversary event, Remembering the War, and comes complete with naval bombardments, artillery fire and infantry attacks. Spectators will view the battle from the center of the action within safely cordoned areas at Union Point Park, East Front Street and the new Alfred Cunningham Bridge. Battle reenactments are slated for noon and 7pm on Saturday, May 8, followed by the nationally acclaimed Federal City Brass Band performing its repertoire of Civil War era music at Union Point Park. The US Colored Troops National Symposium begins Thursday, May 6 with an evening lecture at Tryon Palace by Hari Jones, curator and assistant director of the US African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, DC. On May 7-8, symposium reenactors will hold a living history encampment on the lawns of the convention center while workshops and lectures take place inside. To attend the free symposium lectures and workshops, register at uscoloredtroops.org. Between battles and lectures, there are opportunities to visit historic sites, see torpedo and artillery demonstrations, experience the four 12

scheduled encampments and learn firsthand about medical methods employed during the war. The Attmore-Oliver House, New Bern Academy Civil War Room, James City Slave Quarters and Cemetery and New Bern Battlefield will be open to tour, May 7-8. The weekend comes to a close on Sunday, May 9, with reenactors parading through downtown New Bern to Union Point Park for a memorial service and wreath laying ceremony followed by a cannon salute and church bells. Be prepared to experience a full weekend of activities as the New Bern 300th anniversary committee share the town’s rich history. For a complete list of activities, visit newbernhistorical.org/rememb e r i n g - t h e - w a ryears.
ARTS Jazzin’ it Up in Oriental It came as no surprise to organizers that tickets are sold out for singer/songwriter/arranger Susan Werner’s performance planned for the evening of Friday, May 7 at the Old Theater in Oriental. But don’t despair, everyone has a second chance to see Werner during a free jazz workshop at 3:30pm on Friday, May 7, at the Old Theater, Oriental. No tickets are necessary. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For additional information, visit pamlicomusic.org or email the Pamlico Musical Society at pamlicomusic@yahoo.com.

300 Years, 300 Views In January the city of New Bern began its year-long tercentennial celebration. And New Bern ArtWorks & Company will celebrate, too, with its exhibit of 300 paintings done “en plein aire” to artistically celebrate the city’s anniversary. National Antique Car Show, Harleys Roar Through New Bern New Bern is bracing itself for an invasion of metal in May – but we’re not talking about music. Hundreds of finely restored antique and classic cars will converge on the historic downtown streets on Saturday, May 15, as the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) holds its annual Grand National Meet on reserved pedestrian-friendly roads. The event, which rotates throughout the country each year, features cars that have won first place awards in national competitions. This means the public can expect to see a virtual smorgasbord of sleek, highly polished cars from all eras of motoring history. For those interested in participating, registration runs from 7-11am Saturday and judging will be held from 11am-3pm. The event is followed by a social at 6pm and an awards banquet at 7pm at the Riverfront Convention Center. It’s Saturday, however, when the public wants to take notice as the finely-tuned pieces of metal roll onto New Bern’s shady streets to show off their assets.

Wear your walking shoes and plan on making a day of it – because the cars aren’t the only machines taking over the downtown area. When the auto enthusiasts turn their attention to the inside awards ceremony, their outside space will be filled with the rolling thunder of the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association’s Spring Rally. With daytime events at the fairgrounds, the group heads downtown Saturday night for a block party. Live music, including the sounds of Ivy Road, Vices and Three Day Weekend, runs from noon to 8pm on Friday and from noon-6pm Saturday at the fairgrounds, just east of New Bern. During the block party, Cold Biscuit is slated to perform from 6-8:30pm and Benny Wilson will close the show, running from 9-11pm. Admission is $10 and good for both days. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge perched along the Neuse River. Before “orienting” itself to a new name in 1899, Oriental was known as Smith’s Creek. The original name lacked pizzazz for citizens, so a new name was coined by the wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette. Midyette’s wife saw the name on the transom name board of a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island, in 1862. The name board washed ashore and was displayed a few years later at a residence in Manteo she happened to be visiting. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history. Labeled the sailing capital of North
Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5,000-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, with the Oriental Cup Regatta in June or the Neuse River Solo Race in October being among the biggest draws. Oriental is a harbor for anyone seeking a casual waterfront lifestyle. Nearly all locations in the town are accessible by riding a bike or walking. The town boasts a plethora of activities on the water, a wealth of artisans, an active musical society, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. Find out more about the waterfront town at the Oriental History Museum at 802 Broad St. in Village Square. The museum is currently open Friday, 11am-3pm, Saturday, noon–4pm and Sunday, 1-4pm. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just a 10-mile scenic drive to Oriental. For confirmation or additional information, call 1-800-BY-FERRY or visit ncferry.org. Parade Celebrates History With less than six months until New Bern’s Jubilee Weekend, scheduled for September 1619, the 300th Celebration Parade Committee is in full swing. Organizers are currently looking for volunteers to help with planning as well as with parade day activities. “We have asked representatives from all over North Carolina to participate in the grand event,” said Sabrina Bengel, co-chair of the committee. Bengel, along with Greg Smith of Mitchell’s Hardware, has been working tirelessly to assemble a team of volunteers to help plan New Bern’s “Parade of a Lifetime.” The City of New Bern is most closely tied with the Swiss, but its heritage has been influenced by many different cultures, events and individuals. Jubilee Weekend is an opportunity to embrace that heritage and to learn more about the town, organizers said. “This is such a great and fun way to be a part of this once in a lifetime opportunity and we encourage businesses and individuals alike to join us,” said Smith. “It’s a unique way to honor a family member or local hero. The 300th Celebration’s website has a list of theme ideas to help get you started,” he added. If you would like to volunteer or participate in the parade, visit newbern300.com.

Exploring Nestled on Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best known as the home to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets throughout the day, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid 1800s, Havelock grew from the 1858 joining of the Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named for accomplished British General Henry Havelock, who had gained popularity at the time for rescuing hostages during a bloody uprising in India. In addition to this community adopting Havelock as its moniker, seven other cities in the world share the general’s namesake. Apart from being a railroad depot, Havelock distinguished itself by being a popular hunting and fishing destination in the late 1800s and on through the early 1930s. Even baseball legends Babe Ruth and Christie Mathewson came down to hunt and visit. Photo albums still exist with pictures of these two greats in hunting gear, posing with locals. The 1940s and World War II brought

with them MCAS Cherry Point. Havelock’s population exploded and with it came economic prosperity for local businesses. Before the MCAS was established, the community housed a modest population of 100 or less. Now, approximately 22,500 people call Havelock home. Since then, Havelock has enjoyed a strong relationship with Cherry Point and those who serve on the base, which is one of the largest employers of both Craven and neighboring Carteret County. Havelock enjoys visitors year round due to annual events like the NC Chili Festival in the fall and the MCAS Cherry Point Air Show held each June, along with natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and the Neuse River. What
Steamed, Raw, Surfed & Turfed At 216 Middle St. in historic downtown New Bern, MJ’s Raw Bar and Grille has an ideal location to grab that pedestrian traffic as well as the attention of those working in the neighborhood, making it a staple for locals and visitors alike for the last five years. After 18 years as a Columbia, Md., coffee bar owner, Mike Lentz was ready to make a change. His wife had family in the area and while the couple looked at both Wilmington and New Bern as potential sites for relocation, Lentz said everything just fell in place in New Bern – a fact local diners couldn’t be happier about. Bringing a little bit of Maryland to the table works just fine, especially when it comes to the restaurant’s signature crab cakes, a recipe perfected by Lentz’s grandma. “The crab cakes are by far our best selling item and for good reason,” Lentz said. But the seafood doesn’t stop there. If you’re in the mood for some oysters, clams, crawfish, steamed shrimp or Dungeness crab, they’ve got them at MJ’s, steamed, raw or however you’d like them prepared. 30

Favorites include the Grilled Bermuda Triangle, featuring two jumbo shrimp, two jumbo scallops, grilled and served over a lump crab cake and the Sea Treasure, a combination of broiled jumbo shrimp and scallops in lime infused olive oil, lemon juices and spices. This year’s seafood additions include fish and lobster tacos; lobster, tuna or salmon salads; and a sushi appetizer. But MJ’s isn’t just a seafood restaurant – advises the staff. Be on the lookout for what they believe is hands-down the best burger in town, steaks, sandwiches, salads and desserts made inhouse daily. New to the menu this year is the filet sandwich and ribeye steak. Lentz admits the half-pound burger certainly tops his own list of favorites. With its cozy, wooden interior, MJ’s is a great place for a quiet lunch or dinner with friends. Rustic, yet comfortable, the historic building seems the ideal place to stop and rest a while, during a downtown shopping trip. Make sure to check out the restaurant’s large variety of beer options – an asset for any business during the long summer months. MJ’s Raw Bar and Grille is open from 11am9:30pm, Sunday through Thursday and from 11am-10pm on Friday and Saturday.
