Island Life Welcome to Topsail Island

Hugging the Eastern North Carolina coastline, about midway between Cape Lookout and Cape Fear, is 26 miles of meandering, sparsely populated sandy beaches just waiting for visitors. The world of Topsail Island could easily be equated to stepping back in time – a time when life was just a little bit simpler, a little bit safer and far less stressful. There are no amusement parks. No Bike Week. No multi-million dollar museums or zoos to lure guests to the region. Instead, you will find mile upon mile of unfettered ribbons of sand just calling for you to kick off your shoes and commune with nature. It’s hard to imagine that there are still places in the United States where sunbathers can find a small, isolated sliver of beach to call their own for a day during the peak of the summer season. But, on Topsail, it’s not only possible, it’s probable. Topsail Island (pronounced Topsul), was mostly uninhabited until the 1940s. There was no structured settlement, only fishing camps and the livestock belonging to mainland farmers who would run their charges across sandbars and shallows at low tide to graze on the thick underbrush. Thanks go to the military for raising awareness of this little slice of heaven. During World War II, the US Army constructed Camp Davis in nearby Holly Ridge, using the nearby island for artillery training. When the Army

departed a few short years later, the US Navy picked up the torch, taking up residence on Topsail Island for top secret Operation Bumblebee missile tests. While it was the Army that constructed the island’s first humble buildings, it was the Navy that gave the island its most prominent structures, many of which remain. More than 200 missiles were launched, proving the success of the ramjet engine which laid the foundation for the space shuttle program with its ability to push an aircraft past the speed of sound. The government was gone by 1948, but it left a few remnants behind, including a pontoon bridge to Surf City, basic roads, artesian wells and electricity. Topsail Island was finally ready for inhabitants. Surf City incorporated in 1949, Topsail Beach in 1963 and North Topsail in 1990. Life today is much like it was when the first soldiers set foot on the island, quiet, peaceful and endlessly picturesque. Residents and guests quickly find that time is best spent outdoors and the region has a bounty of outdoor activities to enjoy, from sunbathing and fishing to kayaking and golf. We suggest you sit back in your chair, take a deep breath of that salty air, kick your shoes off and put your feet up on the railing for a moment and ENJOY! TC

The Beach The three beachfront communities of Topsail Island each has its own character, although all embrace a true laid back coastal environment.

NORTH tOPSAIL bEACH Quiet, secluded, somewhat wild, this bedroom community is located at the most northern tip of Topsail Island and has become a haven for those seeking a chance to commune with nature. With miles of sandy beaches, colorful sunsets, wild vegetation and plenty of solitude, it’s not hard to see why. North Topsail has its own bridge to the mainland, making access to nearby towns easy. It also boasts some of the most scenic sound views to be found along the stretch of island. For more information, visit www. ntbnc.org.

With a population that hovers right around 2,000, Surf City is the largest town in the Topsail area, serving as the primary retail hub for the rural region. Surf City has one leg on the mainland and another on the island, bridging the gap and welcoming guests. Incorporated in 1949, the town’s growth was tied closely to the military’s presence in the area, but once word spread about the beauty of the Treasure Coast, Surf City continued to draw newcomers. Along with shopping and dining options, visitors will find a variety of recreational activities. For more information, visit www.surfcity.govoffice.com.

tOPSAIL bEACH The smallest of the three towns on the 26-mile-long island, Topsail Beach celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. The first region of the island to be developed, Topsail Beach looks today much like it did in the 1950s and 1960s. Less than 600 people call Topsail Beach home, however, the number of seasonal visitors continues to grow in this family-oriented community. With pristine beaches and a nostalgic charm that is hard to beat, it’s easy to see what brings families back year after year. To learn more about Topsail Beach, visit www. topsailbeach.org. 10

HAmpstead

Just a hop, skip and a jump from the Topsail area beaches and a 30-minute car ride from downtown Wilmington’s historic district, Hampstead is a quickly growing bedroom community which proves that location really is everything. Perhaps embellished over time, it is said that President George Washington once spent a night in the region, eager to dine on the wild mullet caught in Topsail Sound. Mullet, however, had not begun to run and the feast was swapped out for ham, hence Hampstead. The “Washington Oak” points to where the first president stayed overnight. For more information visit topsailchamber.org.

holly Ridge Holly Ridge’s role in American history was put into motion 75 years ago – Dec. 10, 1940 – although little evidence remains today in this quiet residential community 12 miles north of Hampstead. On that day, the contract was signed to build Camp Davis. Constructed in five short months, the Army’s presence brought the population from about 30 area residents to more than 110,000. As more visitors find their way to this beautiful stretch of coastline, interest in Holly Ridge continues to see a steady rise in population, forever welcoming guests to the Treasure Coast. To learn more, visit www.townofhollyridge.net.

Snead’s Ferry Many Sneads Ferry residents continue to make their living from the water, but instead of the ferry service that once marked this land, it is the seafood that now draws the crowds. The state’s most recent statistics note that Sneads Ferry is responsible for about 385 tons of shrimp a year, making it the county’s largest seafood producer. Divided by water from Topsail Island’s northern edge, Sneads Ferry was settled around 1775 at the site of a vital ferry operation which ran from 1728 to 1939 when the first bridge was constructed. Celebrating Crustaceans

If there is anything to celebrate in the rural waterside community of Sneads Ferry, it’s shrimp. And that’s exactly what the town does each August with its annual festival. The popular Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival peels its way into everyone’s schedules Aug. 8-9 with a full slate of summer fun, much to the delight of families around the region. Hosted by the Sneads Ferry Community Center, the festival kicks off at 9:30am Saturday morning with a parade and carries on throughout the day with live music, contests and plenty of shrimp prepared a variety of ways. The two-day events include the crowning of the festival queens, carnival rides, arts & crafts, a car and truck show, street dance, fireworks and excitement around every bend. If you’re feeling a bit competitive, don’t miss the shrimp heading competition, which encourages all ages to learn and perfect the art of cleaning shrimp. For more information, visit sneadsferryshrimpfestival.org.

Topsail in the Fall

Slated for Oct. 17-18, Autumn with Topsail celebrates the onset of cooler weather and raises much needed funds for the Missile Assembly Building in Topsail Beach, with art, food and beach music. The event is held on the grounds of the Assembly Building, which was a research and testing site for Operation Bumblebee, a top secret missile program operated by the US Navy from 1946 to 1948. Things get started on both Saturday and Sunday with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Kiwanis. But it’s the juried art show that is always sure to bring in the visi14

Earth & Surf in North Topsail

Spend a Saturday getting acquainted with nature at the Keep Onslow Beautiful Earth & Surf Fest. The annual festival makes the connection between the health of the environment, the economy and people, with plenty of fun activities to go around. Earth & Surf Fest encompasses both the sound and ocean sides at beach access #2 in North Topsail Beach. This event includes educational and artisan booths, along with a surf competition, paddleboard race, beach yoga, waterway sport demos, a 5K sand run, a BMX stunt demo and live entertainment. This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 4. For a full schedule, or to register for the numerous events and competitions, visit www.earthandsurffest. com.

Hampstead Marks the Spot

Hampstead takes to the streets to celebrate its most abundant catch from the sea, the spot fish, each September with a two-day festival of fun and entertainment. Carnival rides, arts and crafts, colorful pageants, live entertainment, demonstrations and lots and lots of spot fill the festival with fun for the whole family. Biblical lore explains that it was the spot fish that was used by Jesus to feed the multitudes fish and bread and that it was his thumb that left the small spot on the body of the fish. But no matter how the spot actually got there, fish lovers can see the distinctive dot themselves during the annual NC Spot Festival set for Sept 26-

Celebrating the Poplar Way

Turtle Hospital Open for Tours

Built in the 1850s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Poplar Grove Plantation, just outside of Hampstead on Hwy 17, is one of the oldest existing peanut plantations in the state. The site opened as a museum in 1980 and today, the mansion draws crowds throughout the year. A variety of special events are held at this historic site, including the spring Herb and Garden Fair, a seasonal farmer’s market, a Halloween festival each October and the special Christmas Open House in December. The plantation is open for tours from 9:30am-4:30pm, Monday through Saturday, and noon-4:30pm on Sunday. Details: 910-686-9518 or poplargrove.org.

Jazz Fest Celebrates Ocean City

Take in a weekend of jazz at the Ocean City Jazz Festival in North Topsail Beach July 3-4. The event celebrates jazz legends and up and coming jazz greats at 2649 Island Drive in North Topsail Beach. The event celebrates the rich history of Ocean City, the first African American beach community in the state, established in 1949. This year’s lineup includes Willie Bradley, Lenora Zenzalai Helm, Cyrus Chestnut and the John Brown Quintet, Reggie Codrington, Marcus Anderson and more. One-day admission is $30 and a two-day ticket can be purchased for $50. The event includes a merchandise market with an eclectic mix of food, beverages and souvenirs. The jazz festival features signature wines pro-

After a grand opening in 2014, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center welcomes guests this summer at its new home, 302 Tortuga Lane in Surf City. Tours begin in June and admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and active duty military and $3 for children 13 and under. Visitors can access the gift shop, talk with volunteers, and look through the windows for free. Since its opening, the Turtle Hospital has successfully rescued, rehabilitated and released more than 400 turtles, excluding any hatchlings that made their way through over the years. The hospital also runs the Topsail Turtle Project, a group of volunteers that walk the beaches during nesting season, the beginning of May through the end of August, identifying turtle nests. During hatching season, volunteers also sit with the nests at night. Each year the hospital holds training sessions for new batches of volunteers at the Surf City Welcome Center. The new facility is quite an upgrade from the hospital’s humble beginnings on Topsail Beach. The Turtle Hospital went from being located down a sand covered road in a 1,000 square foot ordinary building to a 12,000 square foot structure that houses a medical wing, ICU, operating theatre with a new digital radiograph and boasts a 3,600 square foot main rehabilitation room, Sea Turtle Bay. New Game in Town

Forget Boardwalk and Park Place. Forget railroads. When it comes to playing a board game the Topsail way, these well-known spaces are better replaced by the swing bridge, the Missiles and More Museum and the turtle hospital. Meet Topsail-Opoly, a game designed by resident Grier Fleischauer. The colorful board game features locations such as Serenity Point Duplex, Queen’s Grant Townhouse, Breezeway Motel, Sea Vista Motel and the Villa Capriana Condos. There’s shops on the board game that are local favorites too, including Topsail Island Trading Company and The Gift Basket, Quarter Moon Books & Gifts, Godwin’s New Topsail Market, Surf City Fishing Village, Patio Playground and Topsail Beach Skating Rink. “We hope you will enjoy our game for many hours and have as much fun playing it as we did creating it,”

said Fleischhauer. “Anyone familiar with Topsail Island will chuckle with delight,” said Tammy Proctor, the director of the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce. “Every detail of the game features the things we love about Topsail.” Instead of Community Chest, the playing cards are Blackbeard’s Treasure Chest and Sand Dollar cards which instruct players to take a walk on the Jolly Roger Pier and collect $200 and Pay Beach Nourishment Tax of $50 or Donate $50 to the Turtle Hospital. Even the bank is called Blackbeard’s Booty Bank and the multicolored money features missiles, towers, beach chairs and surfers. Topsail-Opoly is available at The Topsail Island Trading Company and The Gift Basket. TC

Topsail Island Piers Island Fishing

There is a lot to brag about on Topsail, the sun, the sand, the surf … the fishing! . From piers and surfside to trolling on a charter boat, few things are better than casting a line on Topsail Island’s beautiful coastline. Anglers rave about the spring sea mullet and the Spanish mackerel, drum, flounder, cobia and spots as the water begins to warm. Pier fishing was born with the construction of the Surf City Ocean Pier. Constructed in 1948, the site was destroyed by Hurricane Fran in 1996, but it was rebuilt and reopened in 1997 without missing a beat. The pier has been owned by the Lore family since 1973 and has become quite an icon in the community. Fishermen who prefer a little solitude and peace, can easily find their place in the sand for a little surf fishing, by far, one of the most relaxing ways to participate. It’s not uncommon to find an angler resting back in a beach chair, his rod tucked into the sand by his feet as he patiently waits for a nibble. The payoff isn’t bad either, with catches including flounder, trout, black drum, spot and pompano. Those feeling a little more adventurous have more than 25 charter boat captains in the immediate area to choose from. Fishing trips range from short inshore jaunts ideal for younger family members to longer, high seas adventures in the Gulf Stream. Most captains can cater a trip to your wants and needs. Visit www.topsailcharterfishing.com for a list of charters and tours in the area. 18

Both short and long-term options are available. Those interested can pay with a credit card online at ncwildlife. org, call 1-888-2HUNTFISH (1-888-248-6834) or view a list of locations throughout the Treasure Coast by visiting www.ncwildlife.org. Our

Wild Side Get Back to Nature in Topsail

While many of Topsail Island’s treasures are apparent as soon as you cross the bridge into Surf City, there are those that are tucked away from the mainland and hidden just out of sight. But for those who are willing to scratch the surface and look a little deeper, there is a wealth of educational opportunities just waiting to be found.

skimmers, sandpipers, willetts and more. What may be most eye catching, however, are the clusters of stunted trees and shrubs, hence the name Stump Sound. Naturists will recognize yaupon, silverling, live oak, red cedar and others amidst what once may have been a bountiful maritime forest. To learn more about the site, visit www.nccoastalreserve.net.

Permuda Island

Holly Shelter Game Land

Evidence of some of the region’s oldest residents can be found on Permuda Island, a 1.5-mile sliver of land that sits in Stump Sound adjacent to North Topsail Beach. Archaeological evidence here dates back to about 300 BC amidst the Holocene and Pleistocene sands that make up the island. Thick deposits of shell refuse in the waters surrounding the island led the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve to conclude that prehistoric Native Americans found access to a wide variety of shellfish on the land, including oysters, clams, scallops, crabs and whelks. First deeded in the mid-1700s, the former farmland in the central part of the island is now covered in dog fennel, goldenrod, broomsedge and asters, while the waters around the island are used as nursery grounds for a variety of species. A great spot for bird watching, the protected estuary is home to egrets, herons, black 20

www.nccoast.com

This reserve, which covers nearly 70,000 acres between Holly Ridge and Rocky Point is a true mixed use space. The land is use for hunting September through January and reverts to hiking and camping space for the remainder of the year. Guests will find hiking and ATV trails, picnic areas and plenty of space to explore the varied ecosystems of the Carolina coastal plain. Primary hunting species include deer, bear, turkey, fox, rabbit, raccoon, squirrel, quail and dove. While hunting is a popular pastime for many who visit the site, it is often the rare plants that bring visitors to the site. According to the NC Natural Heritage Program, Pender County has some of the most biologically significant land along the entire United State coastline and ranks fourth among the state’s 100 counties for its number of rare plants, including sundews, pitcher plants and Venus flytraps.

Few will deny how cool these carnivorous plants are, but many people don’t realize just how rare they are. So rare, that they only grow naturally within about a 100mile radius of Wilmington. And that’s it … in the world. The nitrogen and phosphorus poor boggy savannahs along North Carolina’s coastline are the only places where the plant is truly indigenous. The Wildlife Commission estimates that there are less than 35,000 flytraps remaining in the wild. If you spot one, be sure to enjoy it without physically interacting. Damaging or picking a Venus flytrap is against the law. To learn more, visit www.ncwildlife.org.

Ecological Marine Adventures in Surf City and the Environmental Education Center in Sneads Ferry both offer summer science programs for youngsters, a great way to get them excited about science and keep them busy during the summer. Ecological Marine Adventures is a marine education center that specializes in hands-on, in the field education adventures for children and families. EMA operates a community aquarium and marine exploration lab. The aquarium is free and open to the public year round. The lab also offers a slew of summer programs from mid-June through the end of August. Marine Science Classes are offered for ages 4-11 and cover a variety of topics. Some classes meet three times a week, while others are just two hours long on one day, making it easy for visitors to the island to take advantage of the educational opportunity. Explore sharks, learn about

Permuda Island marine biology, study ocean explorers or even learn to surf through these hands-on programs. To learn more, visit www.ematopsail.webs.com. On the mainland, the Environmental Education Center in Sneads Ferry opened its doors for the first time in April 2014. The center features exhibits of wildlife and natural resources in Onslow County and includes a screened-in classroom overlooking the swamp. The center has a summer camp program planned for 2015 examining Wetland Wonders beginning July 27. The camp runs from 9am-4pm and attendees will learn about animal and plant identification, animal rescue, recycling and other activities that focus on wetlands. To register, visit the Onslow County Museum’s website at www. onslowcountync.gov. TC

The Towers of Topsail

With battle scars from the elements, the mysterious towers along Topsail Island are great conversation for first time visitors. Even among longtime residents, stories abound about the purpose of the towers, from World War II submarine spotting sites to whale watching outposts. No, they weren’t built by the electric company. Topsail was separate from the mainland until the 1940s and reachable only by those few locals who knew how to make their way through the marsh at low tide. Its remoteness makes it easy to assume that there is little history on Topsail Island – but nothing could be farther from the truth. And the coastal watch towers are a vital reminder of the important role the region has played in history. It was the US Army that first came to the North Carolina shore. In less than six months during World War II, the government constructed Camp Davis on the mainland at Holly Ridge – quickly raising the population. Troops would conduct artillery training under the shroud of safety provided by the barren island of Topsail. By the end of the war, much of the base was dismantled and the troops were transferred. But, the island’s potential was noted and it didn’t take long until the US Navy had the ideal use for the site. On the sandy shores of what the Navy then called the “sand spit,” troops crafted and tested some 200 missiles from 1946 to 1948. In March of 1947, with the issuance of a press release, the Navy finally announced what it was doing on the island, although it failed to mention that the tests had been ongoing for months. 22

www.nccoast.com

“Eights observation stations, located along the sand spit for tracking of units in flight will house radar and photographic equipment for recording of performance data,” the release read. Operation Bumblebee included the development and testing of the Navy’s first supersonic guided missile and the ramjet engine, the basis for today’s jet aircraft and warheads, including the Terrier, Tartar and Talos missile systems. Ranging in length from 3 to 13 feet, the missiles were constructed and tested along the otherwise peaceful 26-mile stretch of beach, according to Wilmington author David A. Stallman in “Echoes of Topsail,” now in its third printing. The Assembly Building, now maintained by the Historical Society of Topsail, is home to the Missiles and More Museum, which holds a plethora of artifacts and images from the missile tests. The control tower, a shorter version of the photographic towers, sits in a direct line between the Assembly Building and the launch pad. While it previously had an observation deck, the tower’s roofline has been altered through the years. The launch pad is now the patio for the Jolly Roger Motel and the bombproof observation room serves as the motel’s basement. The towers were centered on “concrete slabs supported on creosoted piles driven to a minimum depth of 20 feet and 15 tons of bearing.” Seven of the original eight structures remain, although a few have been merged into beachfront homes and are hard to recognize. While three of the residences are private, Tower 5 is a short-term rental offered through Ward (Continued on page 45)

Aquarium Outreach the

NC Aquarium Offers Summer Program in Topsail

If you can’t make it to the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, no fear - the aquarium will come to you. Outreach Coordinator Andy Gould returns to Topsail Beach this summer for six consecutive Wednesdays, June 24-July 29. The program, which runs from 1-2pm, is held at the Topsail Assembly Building, with plenty of room to spread out. “We are looking forward to another great summer of sharing North Carolina’s wildlife with the residents and visitors of Topsail Island,” said Gould. “We have enjoyed seeing the popularity of these programs grow throughout the years, and we hope everyone will come and get an up-close look at some of North Carolina’s coolest creatures!” The fun, hands-on, educational programs include costumes, props and live animals to make the programs entertaining, enriching and exciting for all participants, putting sea turtles, alligators, snakes and other critters at the public’s fingertips – literally. The goal, said Gould, is to teach people about species that are native to North Carolina and teach them how they can help protect them for generations to come. “The best part about sharing our outreach programs 26

www.nccoast.com

is getting to show people the amazing wildlife that they have in their own backyards. We are incredibly lucky to have such diversity in North Carolina, and it’s a treasure that is worth exploring and protecting. “ Topics this year, in order, are Wild Wetlands, Turtle Tales, Jammin’ Jellies, Alligators, Our Living Seashells and Feeding Frenzy, the newest addition to the line-up. It is not necessary for participants to register in advance, walk-ins are always welcome. While there is no set cost for the program, donations are graciously accepted to help support the program. North Carolina has three aquariums in its system, located in Manteo, Pine Knoll Shores and Fort Fisher, near Wilmington. The Fort Fisher location takes visitors on a journey along the Waters of the Cape Fear, including freshwater streams and swamps, open ocean and reefs, as it explores aquatic life. All three sites are open from 9am to 5pm daily, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is $10.95 (ages 1361); $9.95 age 62 & over; $8.95 ages 3-12. Children age 2 & under and members of the NC Aquarium Society are admitted free. Annual memberships are also available. To learn more, visit ncaquariums.com. TC
