Harkers Island Boatbuilders Resurrect the Jean Dale

By Amanda Dagnino Under a bare-beam carport to the side of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, Harkers Island, the Jean Dale is catching her second wind.

She sits proudly atop a cement strip in the floor, flanked by wooden supports and surrounded by a catwalk to facilitate the ongoing work. This is her house – a structure built to protect her from the elements she has weathered for more than half a decade.

For all pretense and purposes, she is perhaps one of the most important exhibits to be donated to the newly-completed museum. Like all things housed within its 20,000 sq. ft., the Jean Dale tells a story. She speaks of ingenuity and design, of craftsmanship and artistry, of resilience and a d a p t a b i l i t y, of labor and of love. This one functional piece of seafaring equipment encapsulates the nature and spirit of the small communities that line Core Sound.

She is Down East.

The completion of the 40-

foot Jean Dale and the Down East boatbuilding industry will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Waterfowl Museum. The public presentation of the restored vessel will be enhanced by programs throughout the day, including an afternoon panel discussion by area boat builders, displays featuring Harkers Island’s boatbuilding families and a local seafood lunch.

Prints are being made of a Robert Dance painting of the boat to mark the celebration and women gather almost daily in the “People’s Gallery” to complete a commemorative quilt, richly colored in deep blues and teals.

To call it the “unveiling” of the Jean Dale wouldn’t really be fair. While she sits just out of view – buffered by a single line of trees from the

museum parking lot and surrounded by the forest on three sides – the cement slab and roof boathouse has become the virtual coffee shop of the island.

As Jimmy Amspacher, husband of the museum’s director, Karen, begins a day of restoration, neighbors and friends begin to gather. In the stillness of the morning, the sound of the saw and the sander override the deafening ebb and flow of the crickets, sending out a siren to those nearby. Over the course of an hour, three different individuals come up, walk around the vessel, chat with those already there and sip their coffee in the cool breeze rolling up from the shore.

“It’s like that most every day. Oh, it’s a mess out there,” laughed Karen Amspacher. “That’s men stuff out there and they’re all enjoying it. You know, a boat like the Jean Dale means a lot to the people from here. She’s a part of their childhood, a part of their heritage. If not her, they’ve seen others just like her. And they’re all excited to come up and see how things are progressing.”

If there’s one thing that makes a Harkers Island boat identifiable among all others, it is the carefully designed flare of the bow that deflects the water as it cuts through Core Sound. Without the aide of plans and with no formal training, Down East boat builders use the skills of their forefathers to hand

create some of the most beautiful crafts imaginable – making them collector’s items up and down the Eastern Seaboard.

While there has been some debate over who originally conceived the shape, the late Brady Lewis, builder of the Jean Dale, is widely said to be the originator. The shape – that elegant upward and outward curve – has become globally recognized as a trademark of Harkers Island boats, and has been duplicated in today’s modern vessels. Not only do the custom backyard builders from the island continue the style, but the newest, top-dollar yachts that roll out of Jarrett Bay Boatworks (continued on page 12)

carry the over-accentuated artistry of the flare, making the company’s vessels ideal for navigating North Carolina’s coastline while simultaneously paying homage to its predecessors.

“Every boat Down East has its own lineage,” Karen Amspacher explained. “There’s the builder and then there’s the man who owned it and worked it. Every boat has a story, too.

And we’re going to keep the Jean Dale story alive.”

Since last fall, husband Jimmy, has been working almost daily on the restoration project. Through the years she had been modified several times, he said, but his goal is to return her to original construction. With the aid of an electrical saw and his daughter, Katie, Amspacher is tediously hand placing each plank, finessing the wood around each curve and angle and still finding time to chat with guests.

A native of Atlantic, Amspacher retired after 30+ years as a mechanical engineer aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. Like many of the region’s men, he learned boat building skills from the prior generation – there are no texts or plans to study, no guide to create a perfect boat crafted for the unforgiving waterways.

Working with Julian Guthrie at Hi-Tide Boatworks in Williston, however, Amspacher learned a lifetime of experience. And it’s a skill he himself now uses as a lesson plan for rising generations as part of the museum’s outreach programming.

In 2005, when the museum took a sampling of its programming to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC, Amspacher and fellow boat builder Heber Guthrie completed a Core Sound skiff in five days right on the National Mall – then sailed it across the Potomac River.

For now, it’s the Jean Dale that is keeping him busy. The boat was donated to the museum in 2000 by Patty Jean Lewis Taylor, the daughter of the Jean Dale’s original owner, Harry Lewis, and namesake of the boat along with her brother, Dale. It has been a “10-year process of starts and stops,” Karen Amspacher said. Funding, during these financially-trying times has been especially hard to find for nonprofit groups and museums. Thanks to some gracious donations, however, work is nearly complete.

“We’re almost there,” said husband, Jimmy. “Almost back to 1946 when she was originally built. I’ve got to paint it, rig it and finish other odds and ends

– then the shaft, the rudder and the keel. But otherwise, the main structure is pretty much done.”

In his words: “True boat building is done by hand, one plank at a time.”

And that’s exactly how he has brought new life to the Jean Dale.

While the official opening of the exhibit is planned for Sept. 11, the boat building exhibit will remain on display through the end of November.

Shooting Fish in a Very Big Barrel Morehead City Photographer Aims Lens Toward Mysteries of the Deep

By Craig Ramey “Most of the time I’m working in a very controlled environment,” says photographer Marc Montocchio. The scene around him, however, tells a different story.

Comfortably pitched back into a wine-colored chair at the center of his gallery on the Morehead City waterfront, this South African-born photographer is surrounded by images of anything but “controlled environments.”

Shimmering on the walls as if the prints were still wet with salt water, each photograph peels back the ocean’s mysteries to reveal face to face encounters with sharks, billfish and even whales – the blues, greens and silver skin of each fish knitting a loose narrative of Montocchio’s willingness to get the perfect shot. That hunt has paid off too, not just in the ability to work solely as a professional photographer since 1996, but also through recognition from some of the world’s most popular magazines, including Marlin, Outside Traveler, Africa Geographic, BlueWater, Tide, Out There, Voyages de Pêche and every photographer’s holy grail – National Geographic.

And there are other shots, like the one of a striped marlin thrusting its bill across the top right corner of the frame, that are so intimate you can’t help but wonder, “Is this guy crazy?”

Then you talk to him and realize Montocchio isn’t crazy ... he’s just used to it. Smiling as his South African accent replaces sensible words like “dangerous” with more optimistic ones like “exciting,” Montocchio’s experience and love for finding sea life in its natural habitat are the true catalyst for this kind of work. There’s no death wish here, just the ability to fold any peril from his job neatly into the back of his mind so he can get the photograph he wants.

diver for the South African Navy. Once he discovered there was a room filled with old camera equipment he decided to check out a few so he could start shooting underwater on the Navy’s dime.

“I spent the next two years or so teaching myself,” he said.

“There’s a lot of stuff in South Africa and it’s big stuff and exciting stuff. That’s where I got used to being in the water with big animals, sharks and so on.”

Shark lovers know that South Africa is home to a thriving great white population. And with so many diving trips clocked in these waters you might think Montocchio considers himself lucky for having never seen one. Guess again.

“I would love to see one,” he said. “I’ve worked in great white territory for years … hours and hours and hours in the water for years and I’ve never seen one. But I would love to see a white out of the cage in the natural environment.”

South African diver to part-owner of his own gallery on the Morehead City waterfront is a windy one. After leaving the Navy he moved to Grand Cayman where he worked as a diving instructor, boat captain and fishing guide. While there, he met his wife Laura and before he knew it they had moved to Raleigh. Montocchio then hung up his underwater housing for a while and decided to do commercial work.

“I shot food and jewelry, interiors, guys in ties, corporate portraits,” he said. “But I wanted to get back into underwater.

I was doing it maybe two or three trips a year and then I had a good trip to Baja and got a lot of marlin stuff.”

As the unofficial capitol of the NC Governor’s Cup Series, the Crystal Coast’s connection to sportfishing eventually came onto Montocchio’s radar in 2009. Hoping to test the waters with an exhibit of marlin photos from his Baja trip, the (continued on page 18) NCCOAST COMMUNICATIONS

“I started going to the Governors Cup tournaments … and exhibiting, which was successful,” said Montocchio. “At (Ducks Unlimited) last year I had a couple of guys give me a call the next day about getting into business with them. Morehead is the center of boatbuilding, fishing, everything. It’s a beautiful town. My wife and I came down and loved Montocchio’s Favorite it and we said, ‘why not?’”

“I get comments all the time that it looks like an aquarium and that’s what they’re after,” he said. “It’s a process called dye sublimation and it’s on aluminum. It’s a dye, not an ink.

That’s what makes it so vibrant and bright. It’s an expensive process but once I started producing aluminums that’s what people wanted.”

Aside from the realism and energy found in these prints, Montocchio also works to solve a few of the ocean’s mysteries by delivering an aspect of fishing that even the most seasoned captain never gets to see.

“They want to see what it looks like below the surface,” said Montocchio. “It’s a big thing for them to see what it looks like on the other side of the water. That’s tournament fishing. Usually, for the in-water stuff, I charter the boat or work with a captain or an owner. We look for the fish as we were fishing, but instead of putting lines out I’ll get dropped off. They leave me and I go looking for fish.

“So it’s very different when I’m on the boat with fishermen trying to hook a fish. Most of the shooting I do around here is different from what I would do in Baja where I’m targeting a specific species. Here I go out with guys fishing and I do jump shots, the release shots, and jump in and photograph the boat releasing the fish.”

Using a unique technique of stitching some of these photos together, Montocchio has carved out another niche that’s both commercial and scenic. NC Seafood Festival Returns to Morehead City

Swinging back and forth from the bench seat of a Ferris wheel, the streets below are almost unrecognizable. Morehead City’s waterfront, normally finding its life in late afternoon as sportfishing boats come in with the day’s catch, is now a tightlypacked stream of pedestrians walking the streets in search of shrimp burgers, crab cakes and ice cold lemonade. The smell of fried hushpuppies envelopes the air, making its way across city blocks and even up to the peak of the Ferris wheel, where it adds yet another dimension to this festival’s most iconic vantage point.

Whether it’s fried, grilled or sautéed, the smell of numerous booths and restaurants cooking seafood outdoors is a memorable one. It excites the taste buds, gets mouths watering, stomachs grumbling and above all, drives people to return for more. The NC Seafood Festival has banked on that fact for nearly a quarter century, bringing thousands of people to the Morehead City waterfront for a smorgasbord of flavors that eventually swelled the event into one of the state’s largest festivals (second only to the Azalea Festival).

Organizers are hoping to continue that trend Oct. 1-3 as the NC Seafood Festival celebrates 24 years of food, music and maritime heritage on the Morehead City waterfront. “There’s nothing like it,� said Stephanie McIntyre, executive director of the NC Seafood Festival. “All of Carteret County comes down here for the weekend. We fling open our back doors and welcome everybody in and that’s a big draw for people. People are friendly and there’s a down home atmosphere here. It’s a big event but it’s still got all the warm fuzzies that go along with being at home.�

Spanning from the SasSea’s children’s area on the corner of 10th Street to the boat show at the NC Port on the eastern end of the waterfront, the NC Seafood Festival takes over downtown Morehead City each year with plenty of carnival rides, live music and of course its fair share of seafood.

A festival in every sense of the word, this North Carolina tradition has seen its share of growth and diversity among the weekend’s busy schedule, but at its heart the focus continues to be the riches and bounties found along our coastal waters.

In hopes of celebrating this fact, the festival added a new area in recent years known as “Cooking with the Chefs,� or the “chef’s tent.� Held beneath a tent on the corner of 9th Street and Shepard, the chef’s tent offers spectators a chance to see some of the area’s greatest chefs at work as they veer away from traditional ways of cooking seafood.

Implementing their own expertise and unique recipes, chefs will come from up and down the North Carolina coast this year to create gourmet dishes that are a far cry from battered and fried combos you might find further inland. “The chef’s tent is a big highlight ‌ it pushes us to a whole other level,â€? added McIntyre. “We love our chef’s tent and with the growing number of foodies and eating local, it’s the perfect venue for everybody to come out and visit.â€?

line the streets with everything from shrimp burgers and crab cakes to hushpuppies and cole slaw. Rows and rows of booths, many operated by area nonprofits, celebrate traditional Carolina seafood while other booths operated by local restaurants like Piccataâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Bistro by the Sea and the Channel Marker are expected to sell a few of their own specialties in addition to the traditional fare. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited about having a few more (restaurants) down here,â&#x20AC;? said McIntyre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The food is) probably a little more expensive than your typical hot dog or cheeseburger, but the fact is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just about seafood â&#x20AC;Ś itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about the community. Adding to the local flare will be the return of an open air fish market, food from the NC Shellfish Growers Association, the American Prawn Growers Association and the sponsorship of North Carolina-based business Texas Pete, which will be offering up free samples and coupons for its Texas Pete Zesty Cocktail Sauce â&#x20AC;&#x201C; official cocktail sauce of the NC Seafood Festival. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really good,â&#x20AC;? added McIntyre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My kids are addicted to it. And Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen people eat French fries with cocktail sauce, and of course shrimp burgers, shrimp, clams, oysters, even fish. So weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re real happy to have them this year.â&#x20AC;?

Returning this year as the premium sponsor is U.S. Cellular, which will have a special location by the main stage offering a phone charging station and internet hot spot, examples of their latest phones, a green screen photo area and a speed texting challenge. The top 10 winners of the text challenge will be eligible to enter a larger contest worth a grand prize of $10,000.

Taking the Stage With four stages that include a list of dancers, storytellers and live bands, it’s hard to walk through the festival and not get caught up in at least one of the acts. Things are pretty busy on these stages to say the least, especially since there’s usually something going on at all four areas at the same time. And even better? It’s all free.

The entertainment kicks off Friday, Oct. 1 as Back Yard Groove opens the festival at 5:30pm with a mix of blues, funk, soul and rock and roll. Back Yard Groove will be on the main stage, also known as the Clam Jam, and will be

followed by the rock and funk sounds of TrainWreck from 8-11pm.

The only other act to perform on opening night will be the Raleigh-based band Old Habits. This bluegrass ensemble will take over the Oyster Rock Pub (beer tent) from 7-11pm.

It all gets back underway Saturday morning at 11am when the Nelsons open the Coastal Stage and the music continues until 11pm that night as the Right On Band closes the main stage and Slammin Dixie closes the Oyster Rock Pub. In all, nearly 20 bands are scheduled to perform on the main stage, at the beer tent and on the Coastal Stage over the three-day period. Acts range from zydeco to beach, Americana to country and everything in between. See the schedule on this page for a full line up.

as SasSea is always happy to oblige with a kids stage and plenty of activities for them to enjoy.

In addition to its usual playground, lineup of dancers and Christian music performers, SasSea’s Island Playground is also home to the PCS Phosphate Fossil Dig, diaper changing stations, and above all, the one place where kids can hop out of their strollers and look at something besides the backs of people’s legs.

New to the children’s area this year will be cookie decorating by Alex and Brett of Morehead City and the crowning of a Little Miss Sassy and Prince Neptune for ages 2-5.

The Allure of Fall Fishing Like most things, fishing is relative. There are just too many variables to take into consideration when trying to predict where and when you should be fishing, or which bait to use. But we sure can try.

With the Spanish mackerel, drum and trout biting along the North Carolina shoreline, it’s a great time to refresh our knowledge on what lures are working on these popular catches. If there’s one thing we can control – it’s how well we prepare.

To do this, we turned to Michael Locklear at EJW Outdoors in Morehead City. So whether you’re trolling or casting for dinner this fall, make sure you’re using the best tools available to set the odds in your favor.

When trolling for Spanish, nothing beats a good old-fashioned Clarkspoon in silver or gold. For good measure, Locklear recommends rigging up with a Sea Striker planer, to allow for a good deep troll without all the added sinkers. Plus, it gives the lure nice, lifelike movement in the water.

The absolute top selling lure in the store, Locklear said, is Berkley’s Gulp! Alive!

These 3-inch, lifelike shrimp, marinating in a variety of scents, are by far the best when fishing for drum. Locklear’s pick is the “new penny” scent – which goes fast, he said. Alternate with DOA’s 1/4-inch ghost shrimp and you’re almost guaranteed something for dinner.

When casting for drum and trout, have a try with MirrOlure’s new suspended twitchbait. Locklear’s favorite is the wide-bodied 27MR, which casts a bit further in this new size. The color? Our expert prefers “electric chicken.”

If casting for Spanish mackerel inshore, you can’t miss with one of Sea Striker’s original Got-Cha lures.

A favorite of pier fisherman, it’s also great from the boat. Cast them out far and jib them in quickly, the experts say. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but start with the white body and orange/red head.

Fall in Love with Ocracoke Become a Tourist in Your Backyard

To know Ocracoke Island in the fall is to love it. No matter what time of year, Ocracoke stands alone as a place unlike any other. This is not a place of franchises and water parks. Nor is it an exclusive strip of beach lined with four-story homes gobbling up all the best views. Ocracoke is the ideal backyard vacation for those of us who already live in a vacation spot.

The beauty of a summer weekend on Ocracoke Island is far from a secret. Ranked the nation’s No. 1 beach in 2007 by Dr. Beach, the popular authority on beach rankings, the island comes alive with tourists every year and hits its usual peak around the Fourth of July. Of course spring and summer are a stark contrast from fall and winter. All the restaurants are open, people trot up and down the street on horseback, charter boats travel in fleets each afternoon and the sidewalks (where they’re available) are packed with tourists hoping for a taste of island life. But like most tourist stops, the season must come to an end. Locals and “transplants” that have made the island their home need their peace and quiet back.

Island life usually grinds to a halt a few weeks after Labor Day. The rumble of tour buses fades away, the streets and beaches seem wider than they did a few months earlier and the weather … well, it couldn’t be more perfect. That’s the true secret most islanders don’t want you to discover. Among all the hidden treasures and Blackbeard lore that surround this pristine 16-mile stretch of island, the best guarded of all is just how beautiful the island can be during the shoulder season.

The calendar says its fall and for most people that’s not beach season. And that’s just fine with the locals.

If you truly want to feel like you’re alone on an island, now is when you want to go. Now is when you can get a hotel room for a cheaper rate, rent a bike and go exploring. Whether it’s following roads in the 34

village that lead you to secluded spots overlooking the Pamlico Sound, or going farther north to the pony pens where the only sign of anything from the 20th century is one road and rows of telephone poles, the short ferry ride (2 hours and 15 minutes) that begins at Carteret County’s easternmost town of Cedar Island is the only thing standing in your way.

History Lesson Pirate lovers everywhere are familiar with Ocracoke Island because of its most infamous inhabitant, Edward Teach – better

known as Blackbeard. In the early 1700s, a time when Ocracoke was hardly inhabited, Blackbeard and other pirates were said to call the island home. The small population, treacherous sandbars and cutaways in the shoreline made it an ideal spot for pirates to hide and regroup.

However, that was not the case for Blackbeard during a November morning in 1718. Yes, it seems even Blackbeard liked Ocracoke in the fall … that is until he was shot and beheaded in his favorite spot to drop anchor. Known as Teach’s Hole, this spot sits on the southwest corner of the village where it continues to intrigue visitors and locals as a place

where they can take their kayak or boat on a trip through history.

Explorers and history buffs can find plenty of history all around the island. In the village (off of British Cemetery Road) you can find a burial ground that’s home to four men from the Royal Navy. Stationed aboard the HMS Bedfordshire during WWII, Ocracoke became the final resting place for these veterans when their bodies washed onto the shore after their ship was torpedoed by a German submarine.

School is in Session Each fall, as children go back to school across the state, the same is true on Ocracoke. The difference on Ocracoke is that there’s only one school, which teaches grades K-12, and it is the smallest school in the state with an average graduating class of about five students. This intimate classroom atmosphere carries over for the adults, too, with the annual Ocrafolk School.

Held this year from Oct. 24-29, the 4th annual Ocrafolk School is open to residents and visitors alike that are interested in folk art workshops taught in a familial, relaxed atmosphere. Classes offered this year include photography, cooking, jewelry making and assembling model ships inside bottles.

the course of the week.

Teaching this year’s cooking class will be Debbie Wells, a local chef of renown, originator of Ocracoke’s popular Back Porch Restaurant and author of its cookbook. Her Island Cooking class will emphasize local seafood, other meats, some old time Ocracoke specialties, vegetables and lots of desserts. Every year students have a special outing, which has included a “garage lunch” with locals, a visit to the local fish house and a clamming trip.

Island Photography is led by Ann Ehringhaus, a longtime resident of Ocracoke Island. Ehringhaus still loves photography after 30 years of shooting everything from whales to weddings to CD covers. Her book Ocracoke Portrait is a classic, capturing the beauty, humor and drama of island life, while her artwork has been exhibited throughout the Southeast and is in numerous collections, public and private. In this island workshop students will use film as well as digital cameras on field trips, and will work with composition, editing and clear seeing.

Instructor Jim Goodwin has been making ships in bottles for more than 10 years, and has since been preserving this rare and amazing maritime craft by giving demonstrations at museums and selling his work at regional coastal festivals, as well as at the Village Craftsmen on Ocracoke Island.

Birds of a Feather Harkers Island becomes the hub of Carteret County activity each December as the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center and the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild hold events that focus on decoys and the region’s rich seafaring heritage. Both offer an introductory course on Down East life, from displays and programs to competitions and fellowship, and are a great way to get to know the island and its people.

23rd annual Decoy Festival While its headquarters, near the bridge on Harkers Island Road, is open to guests, most of the activity surrounding the Guild’s Decoy Festival will take place at Harkers Island Elementary School, as it has for 23 years. The smell of burlap hangs thick in the air as the organization takes over classroom space and fills the gymnasium with close to 100 exhibitors offering decoys, materials, artwork and more. Doors are open from 9am-5pm on Saturday, Dec. 4 and 10am-4pm on Sunday, Dec. 5, serving up an array of options for family fun. Sunday is Youth Day, with free admission for all people 17 and under.

Antique and contemporary decoys may be the central lure that brings visitors back year after year – but it’s the fun that keeps them here for the weekend. Expect loon calling competitions, r e t r i e v e r demonstrations, head whittling and decoy painting contests, for adults and the youngsters.

New Bern Celebrates 30 Years of Mums

Marking a milestone, the 30th anniversary of Mumfest promises to be the biggest and best yet. Slated for the second weekend in October, the downtown streets of this historic hamlet will come to life Oct. 8-9, attracting throngs of visitors during New Bern’s 300th birthday year.

Mumfest is a two-day extravaganza, filling New Bern’s historic downtown with live entertainment, wonderful food and great shopping. From the waterfront at Union Point Park to the gardens of Tryon Palace, Mumfest is an award-winning festival like none other.

In 1971, a nonprofit company known as the Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation began a revitalization effort.

In conjunction with the city and county governments, as well as other area organizations, the effort has been very effective over the years, partly due to the revenue raised each year through Mumfest. The festival, along with many other local events, has brought with it aggressive revitalization, which has ultimately refashioned the beautiful heart of New Bern into a major attraction.

The Joe Alcoke Auto Group, title sponsor, brings a major automotive exhibit to Mumfest every year, and this year Alcoke has a special treat for racecar fans.

“We are proud to bring the Corvette Racing Tour to Mumfest and look forward to participating in all the excitement this exhibit generates,” said Joe Alcoke The Corvette Racing Tour features the 2010 Corvette C6R ALMS show car, Victory Lane Photos, artifacts from Corvette’s storied racing history and a number of championship trophies.

Also on display will be the No. 3 GT2 Compuware Corvette show car, a Corvette ZR1 interactive cutaway chassis and a replica 2010 C6.R race engine.

At the Winner’s Circle Photo Trailer, racecar fans will have a chance to have a digital photo taken in front of a green screen with the virtual images of their favorite championship – winning Corvette Racing drivers at no charge!

But that’s just the beginning of what you’ll find at Mumfest this year. Other entertainment includes a major concert sponsored by Bigfish FM featuring Kutless, the Sidewalk Prophets and Above the Golden State. Gravity-defying athletes (including Olympic medalists) are back with the King BMX and Flippenout Extreme Trampoline shows. The 9th annual Boat Show, magicians and street performers, amusement rides and much more all go together to make Mumfest great fun for everyone. A Moment for Mullet

Fall is inevitably rolling closer, like all good seasons tend to do, and the tiny village of Swansboro is gearing up for its largest annual celebration –

the Mullet Festival. Held on the second weekend in October, the 56th annual Mullet Festival, planned for Oct. 9-10, is not a tribute to the severely out-ofstyle 80’s haircut. Instead, it is homage to the bait fish that sometimes seconds as dinner.

Although Swansboro was originally a famous ship building location, its fishing industry slowly took over in the 1920s. The Great Depression had mercilessly slowed the development lumber and naval stores, so residents instead turned to another natural resource, the sea.

In 1941, Swansboro watched as the construction of one of the US Marine Corps’ largest bases, Camp Lejeune, began in the neighboring Hubert.

With it came economic growth and the beginnings of a tourism industry for the area. In 1954, the popular Swansboro mayor M.N. Lisk decided to create one of the first coastal seafood celebrations, the Mullet Festival, in order to commemorate the completion of the bridge across the White Oak River.

What started as a big cookout, the Mullet Festival has continued for some 56 years, slowly evolving into an allout event. The town of Swansboro may be rather small with a population of about 1,700 people, but the Mullet Festival is not. Last year, attendance was clocked at around 22,000 people.

As is tradition, the event begins with the festival parade, with Boy Scout troops, elected officials, marching bands and area clubs making their way through the streets on colorful floats.

With more than 100 vendors coming from as far away as Ohio and Virginia, there will be plenty of things to see and eat after the parade has ground to a halt. Arts and crafts booths always fill up the downtown sidewalks, giving unique shopping opportunities for those who are interested. And there is always plenty of live entertainment to take in while enjoying a rest.

It’s important to note that due to the heavy volume of foot-traffic, there is no parking at the festival. If you are not lucky enough to know someone in the immediate area, you may be able to find a spot on some of the side streets (be sure to get there early as these spots fill up fast). As always, the event is free and will be held regardless of weather – so rain or shine, come celebrate the rich culture and history of Swansboro. For more information visit swansborofestivalscom.

Carolina Kite Fest Soars On

Sponsored by Kites Unlimited in Atlantic Beach, the 23rd installment of the Carolina Kite Festival lifts off Oct. 23-24 on the beach in front of the Sheraton, Atlantic Beach. The event goes from 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday, with an evening fly slated for 8pm Saturday evening.

Long a favorite of area children, kites of all shapes and sizes catch the breeze and linger over the autumn ocean. First timers soon discover kites have come a long way from their diamond shaped ancestors. Huge octopi, cartoon characters and unimaginable spinning displays of color have all been known to cast shadows over the sandy beach below, inspiring spectators to grab a line and take part in one of the many mass kite ascensions planned.

When they tire of the demonstrations and competitions planned throughout both days, kite enthusiasts are encouraged to participate if the wind and the mood are right.

The Need for Speed Morehead City Waterfront Comes to Life With Super Boat Grand Prix Whether it’s happening on TV or on the street in front of your house, races on foot, bicycle, motorcycle and by car have become a common part of our weekends. However, a new trend has developed in Morehead City during the past few years that’s working hard to break that trend.

The big difference is that these races are on the water … and Jeff McCann, owner of Jack’s Waterfront Bar in downtown Morehead City wouldn’t have it any other way. Folks will find McCann, who was instrumental in bringing the annual race to Morehead City, behind the controls of one of the fastest Vbottoms on the circuit, a 44-foot Fountain boat, Cat Killer.

Cat Killer will most certainly be on the prowl Sept. 17-19 during Morehead City’s 5th annual Crystal Coast Super Boat Grand Prix. Capable of speeds up to 200 miles per hour, these aptly named watercraft will compete with each other in various class divisions, such as the Superboat 750, Superboat Stock, Superboat Unlimited and Super Cat. Each year spectators stroll through downtown Morehead on the Friday and Saturday race weekend to get an up-close look at the boats in dry dock. Saturday is also known for the Crystal Coast Car and Bike Show, held in downtown Morehead City, where proud owners of show cars, trucks and motorcycles compete in nearly 30 categories.

However, Sunday is always the most exciting day of the event. Gates open at the NC Port at 9:30am, and the first race starts promptly at noon. Parking is free at the port but the race area does require admission costs that were unavailable by presstime.

This Crystal Coast Grand Prix is part of a larger 10-race series governed and sanctioned by Super Boat International and American Powerboat Association. Founded by John Carbonell in 1989, Super Boat International has achieved wild results. It has already attracted 62 of the most competitive racing teams from all over the world and has also seen many celebrity racers, including Don Johnson, Chuck Norris, Kurt Russell, Jason Priestley and Bruce Jenner slide into the cockpit. With an estimated 20 million fans attending these international events, it’s safe to say that this sport is imperturbably set up for future success.

“You know when you’re racing with five or six people around you on the asphalt, the only thing you really have to look for are the other drivers – the asphalt doesn’t change. But the water changes, making this an exciting sport,” McCann said recently.

“You’re watching the tide and the wind and the water. It’s fast, it’s exhilarating and it’s constantly changing. I don’t do drugs so this … this is my adrenaline.”

A Harkers Island native, McCann knows most of the players involved – from the guys who lift the enormous vessels into the water with the cranes at the Morehead City Port to the friends who are taking tickets at the gates.

“That’s definitely one of the benefits of growing up around here,” he said. “When you grow up here and live on the water and run around on the water you meet a lot of different (continued on page 56)

people and these guys are your friends. And everyone has been really supportive of the event – from the town and the Coast Guard to the port. Everyone has been really cooperative and helpful.”

In fact, a lot of those who come out in support of the event do so in a volunteer capacity, he explained.

“It’s just fun to be involved with,” said McCann. “The people at the port tell me it’s the funnest thing they do all year. A lot of them volunteer.

They’re not there to get paid, they’re there to be involved. They know it’s good for the town, good for the area, and they’re happy to help.”

And the help is needed. With ticket sales in excess of 6-7,000 each year at the NC State Port, McCann knows it’s difficult to estimate the number of folks who are drawn to the area for the annual event because many of them opt to sit along the waterfront or take to the water in their own vessels. He estimates, however, that about 30-40,000 spectators find a front row seat somewhere along the course and take in the excitement.

The 2010 Super Boat season is nearing its end and the competition is tighter than ever. A solid showing at the Morehead event could easy propel any of them into first place. The champions will be crowned by Super Boat International after the final race that takes place at the weeklong Key West World Championships in Key West, Fla., Nov. 7-14. This championship marks the 30th anniversary for the organization.

In attendance this year will be Jeff Varvill of Alaska Outdoors Television. Varvill and his film crew will be covering the event which can be seen nationally on the Outdoor Channel and Versus. This is a great opportunity to meet the cast and crew of this popular west coast show.

The race is hosted by Jack’s Waterfront Bar, which serves as the event headquarters.

Proceeds from the event go to benefit the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program and the Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association.

King for a Day The Atlantic Beach Saltwater Classic sends king mackerel anglers back into the water at another chance to win big prize money during the weekend of Sept. 16-18. Formerly known as the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament, the ABSC is one of the biggest Division 1 King Mackerel Tournaments on the circuit.

On-site registration happens from 5-7pm Thursday.

Thursday meal and entertainment begins at 5pm, with a team and family meeting at 7pm. Teams must have an original tournament issued boat number onboard.

Divisions include king mackerel ($400), dolphin ($300) and the “tournament within a tournament” (TWT). A portion of this event’s proceeds will go to the Atlantic Beach Fire Department, which has been the case since the tournament’s inception.

Fishing happens 6:30am-5pm Friday and Saturday with scales opening at 3pm each day. Weigh-ins close at 5pm and the awards ceremony will close things out at 7pm on Saturday.

If protest is not upheld, deposit becomes the property of the tournament.

14. Must be present at Annual Awards Banquet to win any cash or prizes.

15. Two (2) buck limit per hunter.

16. All winners will be announced at the EJW Outdoors Big Buck Banquet on February 18, 2011.

17. Tournament Directors will place all winners at the highest payout per level.
