SURF’S UP

Riding the Wave Surfing Legacy Endures with Buddy Longboard Classic If there’s one sport that reigns supreme during the summer it’s surfing. Each year surfers ranging from little grommets to silver-haired legends make their way to the Carolina coast with a board in hand and hopes of a strong set of waves on the horizon.

This tradition has led to a strong stock of surfers in the area, but none of them have gained more notoriety or fame than the late longboarding legend, Buddy Pelletier.

A top-ranked professional surfer and three-time winner of the Puerto Rican National Longboard Championship, Pelletier came back home to the Crystal Coast in the early 1990s to spend his final days with friends and family before finally losing his battle against cancer. His legacy lived on, however, in the form of the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Scholarship Foundation. This group, known for its humanitarian aid and scholarships for the area’s surfing community, holds several fundraisers throughout the year but none have picked up more steam or awareness than the Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic.

Celebrating its 11th year July 24-25, the Buddy (as it’s known to most people) has grown into a family event, drawing surfers and those who knew buddy from up and down the coast, and sometimes across continents. Spectators are also aplenty as people line up on the beach near the Oceanana Pier in Atlantic Beach to see professional and amateur surfers get back to basics with two full days of longboard surfing.

Unique from other popular surf contests that use smaller fun-shape boards, longboarding lets surfers ride even the smallest of waves, leaving spectators with plenty of action in the water and surfers literally on their toes as they work to stand out during each heat.

“For people that have never been to a surf contest, it’s unusual in a very neat way that it’s an old school, old style contest,” said Lisa Pelletier-Harman, public relations coordinator for the contest and sister to the late Buddy Pelletier. “People that are curious about surfing and want to see how it all got started – this has that vibe. It’s a great place for kids to see the principles of sportsmanship in action and how to live and how you can be a good sportsman and be competitive at the same time.”

The contest takes two full days, beginning at 7am on Saturday and continuing until around 6:30pm that night, which takes care of preliminary rounds and some semifinals. A party will follow on the beach with reggae band Selah Dubb before things get going again Sunday morning, which is usually devoted to semifinals. Finals begin around 1pm, followed by awards at approximately 4:30pm. Surfers are given heats lasting 15 minutes and preregistration is suggested.

Surfers competing in the Buddy have an added bonus this year as Indulgence Salon and Spa has volunteered to provide massages between competitions and Barnum Chiropractic of Morehead City will offer tune-ups and touchups for those in need of a little adjustment.

Indulgence will also be running specials during the month of July, themed around the Buddy Pelletier Surf Foundation.

“I love when other people reach out and have the same mindset about what they’re doing as we do with the projects we have going on,” added PelletierHarman. “It gets me jazzed about things all over again.”

About the Foundation Before the Buddy, the biggest surf competition in the area was the Sweet Willy’s Pro-Am, which eventually gave birth to today’s longboard classic.

Hearing news of Buddy’s illness, competitors teamed up to raise $2,000 for their legendary friend to use however he wanted. This seed money gave birth to the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Scholarship Foundation in 1995, which came about as Buddy spoke with friends and family about who would sit on the board, those eligible to apply and how the organization would also double as a humanitarian aid foundation.

Way Off the Beaten Path Underwater Bike Race Rolls Back into Another Year Off-road biking doesn’t have to be limited to mountains and wooded trails. It doesn’t even have to be limited to land. In fact, with a little creativity and the right gear, you can take your bike off the beaten path … way off the beaten path. Some might even call it the deep end.

Moving into its 25th year, plans are in the works for Discovery Diving’s signature event – the Underwater Bike Race, a fun, yet challenging way to help support the Mile of Hope Foundation, which annually treats youth cancer patients to a free weekend along the Crystal Coast.

The brainchild of owner Debby Boyce, the race has been a staple Fourth of July event for the Beaufort-based dive shop, raising more than a few eyebrows through the years, as well as a good share of chuckles. There’s just something silly about riding a bicycle underwater – yet it’s so intriguing that even landlubbers are eager to learn more.

Originally run on the deck of the Liberty shipwreck, just offshore near Atlantic Beach, the race moved to the Indra, about 13 miles from Beaufort Inlet, in the mid-1990s when the vessel was sunk as part of an artificial reef project. As coral began to grow on the deck of the 400+ feet of the wreck’s deck, the race was moved to the sand next to the wreckage. Riding a bicycle in sand alone can be a challenge, riding it in sand 35-70 feet underwater is a made-for-TV sitcom in the making.

Divers are encouraged to provide their own bicycle, however, a limited number are available to borrow for the event. Only one person per bicycle is allowed and only human power can propel the bike from one end of the ship to the other. Contestants can pedal it, swim it, drag it, float it … whatever it takes to move it.

The race begins at approximately 3pm, but participants are asked to call the dive

boat, Outrageous V, via marine radio to verify the exact start time. Racers are encouraged to decorate their bicycles and themselves, with prizes going to the best decorated as well as first through third place race winners. The person to beat this year, said Lee Moore of Discovery, is Cyle Ridley Casey, last year’s winner who has placed in the top two for the last several years.

“People who don’t have a bicycle get to pick the bike they want to use before we go so they can decorate it,” Moore explained. “Once we get out to the site, we toss the bicycles into the water and usually the mate will go down and move all the bikes to one spot.”

Divers wait in the water for the starting gun and then quickly head down to the Indra, locate their bicycle and the race is on.

“It’s a fun way to raise a little money for the Mile of Hope,” Moore said. “And everyone has a good time.”

Prior to the event, racers are welcome to decorate their bike at the dive shop.

Afterwards, everyone is welcomed back to share in a covered dish dinner (bring one to share).

Smooth Sailing learning the basics with clubs & classes The first rule … is that there are no rules. No membership forms, no commitment, no dues, no fuss – just a communal love of the water and the wind in their hair that brings this ragtag group together once a week for a sail. They want for little – a cooler for beverages, the sound of the wind in the sail and the fellowship that only watermen can truly understand.

Unofficially called the Sailing Club, the mariners meet around 5pm each Thursday at the south end of 11th Street in Morehead City and take to the waters in mass. While there are about 30 on the bulletin e-mail list, the numbers in attendance fluctuate with the tides, weather and school or work schedules – but that’s not of any concern to the weather weary sailors who come back week after week to fulfill their need for time at the helm.

No boat? No problem – more than a few extras are available, many of which belong to Brad Teer, organizer of the group, who fixed them up for the intent purpose of creating a sailing club in Morehead City. And he’s more than happy to share the vessels with anyone who wanders along.

No experience? Well, that’s not an issue either because this group is more than eager to pass on their skills. Older members take turns with the inexperienced, slowly teaching the basics to anyone with an interest in learning to take the reins by themselves. It’s not formal training, mind you, but rather a real world lesson from those who have years of experience guiding these graceful boats through the waterways.

A change of clothes, however, is suggested by Teer, as the gang usually 12

heads down to one of Morehead City’s waterside spots for a beer or two and a bite to eat as the sun goes down. But even that, of course, isn’t mandatory.

While a few members weather the cold just to feel the rush of the wind, the sun-lovers in the group have just begun to resurface for another summer of Thursdays. Anyone interested in sailing, or learning a little about it, is welcome to participate. There is no sign up necessary, there is nowhere to RSVP. Just show up at the waterside and the crew will bring you into the fold.

Basic sailing classes are offered through the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort. The Adult Learn to Sail program runs monthly from 9am-1pm aboard stable 17-19 foot sailing vessels. Scheduled dates for this summer include June 19 and July 17.

The cost is $85 for nonmembers and $60 for members.

For youngsters 8 and up, the museum offers its annual Junior Sailing Program.

These two-week programs share classroom and boat time for basic to advanced sailors throughout the course of summer.

Both programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Maritime Museum.

Shark Week: Up Close and Personal Join the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores for fin-filled activities, July 2531, as it once again celebrates the most feared predators of the ocean with Shark Week.

“People love to look at sharks, they love to be scared … in a safe environment,” said Julie Powers, public relations coordinator for the aquarium.

“So once we have their attention we like to teach them how important sharks are to our ocean’s ecosystem and that they are endangered worldwide.”

Overharvesting, fear, the commercial fishing industry, water quality and a variety of additional factors around the globe have seriously depleted the number of sharks found in the wild today.

event to coincide with the Discovery Channel’s popular Shark Week schedule of programming – giving folks a double dose of shark thrills, tales and lessons.

Mascot Sunny the Shark will make an appearance during the week-long event, greeting youngsters at the door and roaming through the aquarium to meet visitors as they take in the exhibits. In addition, Powers said, guests can expect crafts, films and programs focused on these mysterious, and often misunderstood, creatures.

A great time to visit with the youngsters will be Thursday, July 29, when the site stays open until 8pm for Family Night: Sharks. Themed activities begin at 4pm and ticket sales end at 7pm.

Sand Tiger Facts • The sand tiger’s name comes from its habitat – the slow-moving shark mainly lives toward the shoreline.

• He is the only shark that is known to manage its level of buoyancy by gulping air from the surface and burping.

• The sharks have a maximum weight of about 350 pounds and an average adult length of up to 10 ½ feet.

• It has the slowest reproductive rate known in any shark, producing 1-2 live pups every two years.

• The sand tiger is called the raggedtooth in South Africa and the gray nurse in Australia.

“So it’s a fun, scary education – but it’s also an important one,” said Powers.

Throughout Shark Week there will be live dives into the 306,000 gallon tank which houses a replica of a sunken World War II German submarine, the U-352. Divers, Powers explained, are wired with microphones so they can speak with spectators as they interact with the animals within.

Beaufort Historical Association Reaches a Milestone

By anyone’s account, a lot can change in half a century. That has not been the case, however, when it comes to Beaufort’s architecture. Folks enjoying a stroll along the live oak lined streets of this picturesque seaport see much of the same scenery their predecessors enjoyed 50, even 100 years ago.

An integral part of the historic preservation that has occurred in this quaint little town is the Beaufort Historical Association, which has spent 50 years promoting, and protecting, the historical integrity of North Carolina’s third oldest town.

Historic Beaufort will come to life this summer as the Beaufort Historical Association celebrates its 50th anniversary with its annual Old Homes and Gardens Tour. Discover and explore Beaufort’s historic charm June 25-26 at one of the most highly-anticipated events of the year.

The tour will proudly showcase 10 private historic homes, the ship of local privateer Horatio Sinbad, breathtaking gardens, artist studios and historic sites, including the Old Burying Grounds and the six restored structures on the Beaufort Historic Site.

From small cottages to grand waterfront homes, this year’s two-day tour showcases Beaufort’s architectural range through the eras. From 10am to 5pm guests can stroll along the quiet streets of Beaufort and enjoy a close look at the homes and captivating gardens – taking time to smell the roses along the way.

Since 1960, the BHA has fostered community involvement and pride as it strives to provide preservation and educational programs at the Beaufort Historic Site on Turner Street. Today, with hundreds of active volunteers, a regular schedule of educational programs and fundraisers, the BHA has become the authority on Beaufort’s history. The annual homes tour alone draws close to 2,000 people to this small slice of American history. And that’s just a drop in the bucket when compared to the whopping 60,000 or so who stop by the site each year.

Humble Beginnings It’s hard to know if the late Grayden Paul realized exactly what he was beginning back in the 1960s when he pulled a small cluster of people together to create a 251st birthday celebration for the town. It seems they had erroneously let the 250th slide by without notice and Paul was dedicated to making sure a celebration happened, according to “The Founding of the Beaufort Historical Association,” penned by Ruth Barbour, editor emeritus of the Carteret County News-Times.

It was that group of individuals who formed the nucleus of the Beaufort Historical Association on Jan. 25, 1960.

The individuals named on the incorporation documents, wrote Barbour, were C. Odell Merrill, W. Roy Hamilton, Paul S. Jones, Myrtle Duncan and Paul.

Two major events prompted interest in the historic hamlet. In the late 1940s a group had formed with hopes of preserving what we now refer to as the Old Burying Ground, then known on any given day as either Ann Street Cemetery or Live Oak Cemetery. In addition, the Beaufort Women’s Club played hostess to district women’s clubs in 1957 for a tour of several private homes in town.

Needless to say, these efforts made many of Beaufort’s residents stand up and take notice of their environment.

Here, protected from the Atlantic Ocean by the picturesque Taylors Creek, was a small town that could trace his history

for decades, yet nothing had been done to protect that history along the way.

With that successful celebration a fuse was lit – and the small group of trailblazers set out to make Beaufort a summer travel destination based on its historic significance alone. Its first projects included a museum in the old county jail, circa 1829, which then sat on the corner of Courthouse Square, a pirate invasion and a tour of 41 historic landmarks around town. The board was also highly interested in tracing the deeds of the area’s oldest homes and marking them with a plaque noting the date of construction and the builder.

As most have been lost to us, it’s hard to know today whether those dedicated members knew exactly how important Beaufort’s history and preservation would become – but we certainly owe them a debt of gratitude for having the foresight to keep it safe for future generations.

Celebrating in Style When it comes to celebrating, the BHA knows how to do it in style. Marking the beginning of the tour with the sound of voices, the Carteret Chorale will present a concert on Thursday, June 24, to officially commence the weekend’s celebration. Beginning at 8pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the free concert honors this year’s Honorary Chairperson Alice Copes, as well as the hundreds of volunteers who help make the busy weekend so successful.

“Saying volunteers are vital to the event is really an understatement,” said Patricia Suggs, executive director of the BHA. “We couldn’t do anything without them. Not only would the tour not be possible, but our day to day (continued on page 20)

operations wouldn’t be possible either. We have these wonderful volunteers who give their time throughout the year that just double and triple in number during special events such as the tour.”

Each home, for example, will be decked out with floral arrangements provided by the Beaufort Garden Club.

The club members work with the volunteers for each house to design pieces perfectly matched to the surroundings.

“And they do it for us year after year,” added Suggs.

“It’s the volunteers that keep us going with everything we do.”

On Friday morning, June 25, those volunteers will be as busy as bees as the beautifully restored homes of this once forgotten little village grabs the attention of visitors from around the state and beyond – making the Old Homes and Gardens Tour one of the region’s most popular traditions.

Each of the 10 private homes on the tour has a distinct personality from classic architecture and beautiful antiques to whimsical adaptations of tradition. This year’s homes include: the Sweeney home; the Rumley House, circa 1778; the General Burnside House, circa 1862; Shield’s home; the Rumley House, circa 1843; Leecraft House, circa 1856; Cartner home; George P. Austin House, circa 1891; Barnes’ home; the Fishhouse, circa 1940s; and Capt. Sinbad’s pirate ship.

The gardens on display this year include those of: Ginny Welton, Tierra Fina, Stan and Penny Rule, Sam and Ashley Sellars, Cousin’s Bed & Breakfast, Hazel Simpson, Jim and Virginia Hayward and George Williams and Jerry Thompson, as well as the gardens on the Beaufort Historic Site.

Throughout the event, demonstrations will be held on the Beaufort Historic Site and tours are available both of the Old Burying Ground and aboard the vintage English double-decker bus. At the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery, on the historic grounds, make sure you stop in to see the work of this year’s featured artist, Catherine Martin.

Held in conjunction with the Old Homes and Gardens Tour is the Antiques Show and Sale at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. The show runs June 2527. This year’s show will offer more than 40 vendors displaying a range of pre-1950s furniture, silver, crystal, jewelry, linens, fine art and much more. The variety is endless with items priced for every budget.

For the first time the show features a Collector’s Reception from 7-9pm on Thursday, June 24, giving the public a chance to meet the dealers and do a little shopping while enjoying wine and light hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $20.

Closing in the same way it opened, this year’s tour will conclude with a mass gospel choir at 6pm on Sunday, June 28. Singers from Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church, Queen Street Missionary Baptist Church and Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church will join their voices in song for a free concert on the lawn of the historic site.

Tickets for the homes tour are $16 in advance, $20 on the days of the tour. Tickets for the Antiques Show and Sale are $7 and are good for all three days. A special combo ticket can be purchased for $20.

If you can’t make it to Beaufort in June, there’s a second opportunity to celebrate the historical association’s milestone. A summer party, “Cruisin’ Through 50 Years with the BHA” is slated from 7-11pm on Saturday, July 10, at the site. Featuring music of The Fantasy Band with food, an open bar, live and silent auctions, the event will also help fund the group’s ongoing restoration projects.

Community College Students are Seeing Green

By Amanda Dagnino A student in his early 20s approaches to ask instructor Joe Clay a question – then props his hands on the bow and listens in. Classmates slowly follow, and before you know it, a group has formed, all leaning in, arms dangling over the bare wooden side of the Marissa.

Clay, the instructor in the woodworking lab at Carteret Community College’s Marine Training and Education Center (MARTEC), is a fan of wood. As he talks of the different types, their grains and uses, cutting and building, his excitement is hard to stifle. The longtime shipwright admits he’s pretty fond of boats as well. Tie the two together, and his exuberance is nothing short of contagious.

MARTEC is the only comprehensive marine technology training center in the mid-Atlantic region, according to the school’s website.

The 23,000square-foot facility offers coursework in marine plumbing, mechanics and electrical, along with various boat construction and propulsion courses.

“When it comes to a custom boat, wood is the least expensive way to build one,” Clay said. “But with that said, actually constructing one on your own isn’t always an easy task. Getting it on paper is one thing; but then your hands have to be able to do what your mind

thinks up – and that isn’t always easy,” said Clay.

He’s impressed, however, with what his dozen or so students have been able to accomplish – both with the Marissa, the ecological friendly educational model the program adopted last semester, and their ongoing personal projects.

“It was a bigger project than could be done in a semester but it is a great teaching model,” said Clay.

“Lightweight, yet strong, fuel efficient with a 20 hp motor – it’s a great boat and the students do just about everything. I stand back with my hands in my pockets as much as possible – as much as I can.”

The hope is that Marissa will not only educate, but provide as well. Upon completion the vessel will be sold with the idea that the proceeds will cycle back through the program to fund the construction of a second boat, creating a somewhat self-sustainable program for the college.

Across the Newport River, Graham Byrnes of B and B Yacht Designs in Vandemere and boatbuilding instructor at Pamlico Community College, is keeping a close eye on the progress at CCC. After more than 25 years at the college, this is the first time one of his designs has been integrated into another classroom.

It started with a challenge – like many things with men.

Professional Boatbuilder and Wooden Boat magazines put out the call for a vessel that was not only family-friendly, but economical as well. Gas prices were soaring, boat sales were dipping and average families simply didn’t have the bank book to fund the purchase of a boat.

The contest’s design parameters were pretty basic. The overall boat had to be between 16½ and 18½ feet long and weigh less than 2,700 pounds. It had to have 25-hp maximum power and burn less than two gallons of gas per hour at a cruising speed of 15 knots while carrying four adults (or about 650 pounds).

Byrnes was ready. He had designed his fair share of Carolina sports fisherman models but wanted to do something on a smaller scale – a center console family-sized boat that didn’t break the bank and was more ecologically sound than the big boys on the high seas. “Everyone wants to be green these days and fuels are really at a premium so it was a great contest to run,” he said.

He already had a design for an eco-friendly wooden boat he’d been tossing around in the back of his mind and this was the encouragement he needed to bring it to the forefront. He

took time out of his hectic schedule to put the idea down on paper, did the math, and sent it in. And out of the more than 75 entries the magazine received, he took first prize.

“Without the object of winning, what’s the point of entering, right? I knew if I was going to win this, I had to win big,” Byrnes said with a laugh. “So my argument was that if I don’t win, I’ll have a hell of a good design.”

A design he named after his granddaughter. She had sailed the Texas 200 with him a few years earlier and as he was putting together his contest entry he was reminded of a question he had asked her after the race. What qualities would a boat named Marissa have?

“She told me it would be fast, fun and beautiful,” he said, laughing. “And it really just seemed to fit. I discussed it with her mother and her grandmother, and of course, with Marissa, and she’s just tickled that it won.”

Under normal circumstances, the rest, as they say, would be history. That’s not quite where the story of the Marissa comes to dock, however, but that’s because there’s nothing to bring to the dock just yet. She looks great on paper, but to date a prototype has yet to hit the water. Time, however, is calling Byrnes’ bluff. Wooden Boat Magazine has asked the craftsman to display the vessel at the Wooden Boat Show in Mystic, Conn.

“No, we haven’t run one yet, but I’ve run it through extensive calculations – using the industry accepted calculations, of course,” Byrnes said mid-May. “Obviously the proof is in the pudding, though, and we’ll have her running pretty soon.”

As the students at CCC construct their Marissa, Byrnes is working on a model of his own. And additional boats will inevitably follow. Thanks to an advanced computer controlled router, Byrnes was able to develop the cutting files electronically, making for the perfect cut every time, by anybody.

“Wood can be a tough sell,” said the transplanted Australian.

“Most people think that wood is old fashioned, and it was.

But modern marine plywood, computer guided cutting, epoxy resin and marine glue has made it more high tech. It has made it feasible for it to be commercial again. Building a wooden boat (continued on page 30)

will never equal the speed with which you can build a fiberglass boat in a mold, but these advancements mean you can build the same boat over and over – a superior product that can be built relatively quickly.”

Thanks to the new technology, Byrnes can not only recreate a vessel, but he can pre-cut all the necessary pieces and sell it as a kit for others to construct, taking the tricky measuring and cutting out of the equation.

Back in Carteret County, three students from CCC’s last semester class have found jobs in the field – two with a local yacht manufacturer and another in a cabinet shop, according to their instructor, illustrating that boatbuilding and the woodworking trade is very much alive and well.

“We see it as an old, traditional skill, but it is still a great marketable skill today, too,” said Clay. “As long as there is wood you’re going to need people to work with it.”

And with that, Emily interrupts, apologetically, to show her clamped project to Clay. Finally, she said with a sigh of relief – it works.

“Did you see the smile on her face?” he asks as she leaves the office. “She just joined two pieces of wood together and she’s grinning from ear to ear. It’s going to be a good day.”

news from the neuse Beer Fest for Bear City There are many among us who aren’t ashamed to admit that the ideal drink on a warm summer day isn’t lemonade at all … it isn’t even good old-fashioned Southern sweet tea – it’s an ice-cold beer fresh from the cooler.

It seems certain these connoisseurs of the golden amber delight will flock in droves to the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center on Saturday, June 26, for the first Brew Bern Beer Fest. Sponsored by the Beer Army, a group dedicated to creating a craft beer scene in Eastern North Carolina, the festival offers two sessions, noon-4pm and 6-10pm, intent on providing new tastes for those who think they’ve tasted it all.

From pale ale to stout, more than 50 American breweries will be represented, serving up “unlimited sampling” of more than 150 beers. Think of it as a wine tasting for beer, one organizer said.

Some proceeds from the festival will benefit Hope for the Warriors, a nonprofit charity whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for US service members and their families nationwide who have been adversely affected by injuries or death in the line of duty.

Croaking Along for 30 Years Celebrating its 30th anniversary this summer, the Pamlico County Croaker Festival will once again awaken the quiet, waterfront hamlet of Oriental, July 23, for a family-friendly Independence Day event in true all-American small town style.

The festival is named after the locally-abundant croaker, known in Oriental as the “fish that talks back” because of the interesting croaking noise it makes when caught. While it carries the name of a fish, the festival is more about celebrating the community than what is in the net.

With benefits going to area nonprofit organizations, Pamlico County’s largest, and best attended festival features inflatable rides for the children, vendors, a parade, a full music schedule and much more. Highlights include the announcement of the Croaker Queen and Little Miss Croaker and the Saturday evening fireworks display, which lights the sky over Pamlico Sound.

pirates return for a swashbuckling summer Beaufort’s scary past returns to haunt her Aug. 13-14, as the third Beaufort Pirate Invasion takes to the streets of this historic waterfront village.

During the summer of 1747, the God-fearing folks of Beaufort were run out as pirates overtook the town, pillaging as they went.

Three days in, Maj. Enoch Ward, Col. Thomas Lovick, their troops, and a band of area residents took back their town by force.

Sponsored by the Beaufort Business Association (BBA), the Pirate Invasion celebrates this historic event through encampments, a pirate procession and a recreation of the attack and subsequent trials.

“We’re really trying for a kid-friendly atmosphere,” said Marlene Anderson of the BBA. “We’ll have this great procession down Front Street and the goal is to have more young people dressing up, older people dressing up and everyone just getting out and having a great time together.”

Groups attending this include the Shadow Players Stage Combat Group, Blackbeard’s Crew and, of course, Sinbad and his vessel, the Meka II.

On Friday afternoon families are invited to enjoy “grog” with the pirates at 5pm at the historic site, with shrimp and hotdog dinners going on sale at 6pm thanks to the VFW and the American Legion.

Guests are invited to visit the pirate encampment again beginning at 10am Saturday morning. The parade is set for 1pm and the invasion and trials run from 1:304pm.

The only ticketed event, the Party with the Pirates runs from 510pm on Saturday evening, featuring live music and a barbecue dinner. A cash bar will be available and dinner will be provided

by Roland’s Barbecue. Tickets for the party are $16 for adults and $8 for children under 8 and can be purchased by calling 252-728-3988 or 252-728-5225.

fire in the sky With optimism running high about this year’s tourist season, the Crystal Coast is gearing up for big celebrations, both on land and in the sky, for the Fourth of July. Crafts shows, cannon firing demonstrations and plenty of fireworks will be sure to capture the child in all of us.

Kick off the patriotic holiday on Saturday, July 3, as the Beaufort Business Association serves up its annual Fourth of July Parade and Community Picnic.

Beaufort brings an old-fashioned downhome charm to the national holiday, lining the waterfront with kids, pets, wagons, flags and lemonade stands. The parade begins at 11am. Entrants line up on Front and Gordon streets and proceed through the downtown waterfront. Grab a lawn chair and head to Front Street for this popular event.

During Sunday afternoon, July 4, the staff of Fort Macon State Park will demonstrate the firing process for the 34

Civil War cannon on the parade deck. Demos are planned for 10:30 and 11:30am and 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30pm.

It’s Sunday evening, of course, when families will gather at their favorite location for the exciting fireworks to come.

For nearly 5,000 people that location is Jaycee Park in Morehead City. Fireworks light up the sky at dusk followed by a street dance and merriment. For more information, call 252726-5083.

Just across the bridge from Morehead City at the Atlantic Beach Circle, the town hosts its annual Fourth of July celebration.

REEL CONVERSATION the Art of Flounder Gigging

There’s something slightly eerie about being on a boat in the dark.

Landmarks that are well known become unidentifiable, looming objects in the dim light. The shoreline is defined by back porch lights and sandbars by unlit signs impossible to see until you’re feet away. The lap of the water against the side of a boat at rest resonates through the quietness and louder crashes in the water mere feet away are quick to illicit childhood thoughts of alligators and giant killer sharks. Once the sun has set there’s a feeling that maybe you shouldn’t be here – that you missed the ring of the curfew bell sending people into their homes for the night and are now breaking some unspoken rule.

Yet night after night, there are those among us who make the trek into the darkness for the sake of an age-old fishing practice passed down from generation to generation – flounder gigging.

Reports suggest that the Lewis and Clark Expedition gigged salmon for meals in the Pacific Northwest, a skill they may have learned from Native Americans who used arrowheads and sharpened sticks as spears.

It’s a dying art in many places, mainly because of the patience it requires, the ideal tide and weather environment needed and advancements in fishing techniques that take less time and effort. On any given night, however, you can find those hardened watermen who prefer to pole a skiff along the shoreline or gently wade through knee-deep water in hopes of spotting a flounder buried in the sand. There are also, explains Gary Bateman, owner of Diamondback Fishing & Gigging, visitors who see a night of floundering as a part of their vacation adventure – a way of getting out with the kids and family for a whole new experience.

In Emerald Isle, Bateman is preparing a small Jon boat for a night on the water. He gathers his lights, gigs (spears), a cooler to keep his catch fresh and necessary comfort items. While there are three boats of varying sizes in his arsenal, the smaller, flat-bottomed skiff is closest to the water and lightest to pole around the small, uninhabited islands and marsh that line the Intracoastal Waterway.

“There are many people who still like to get in the water and sometimes it’s the easiest way to see,” Bateman said.

are about 6 feet long with two, three or four small prongs protruding from one end, resembling a small pitchfork.

The opposite end of the pole is equipped with a long line to use for your catch. Walkers can simply jab their prey then slip the fish up the pole and down the stringer to trail along in the water behind them.

Those who do must tread lightly. Flounder are skittish at best and lightning quick in their reaction. The best approach is a quiet one, making as few waves in the water as you can so as not to frighten them away.

The traditional method of gigging, Bateman explained, involves trudging through the water’s edge with a Coleman lantern specially outfitted with a shroud to help eliminate the glare cast on the water.

With a lantern in one hand and a gig in the other, the fishermen were armed with all they needed for a night of fishing.

While almost completely obsolete today, there are those who still fare well with this approach, but the glare is an ever-present issue with lights carried above the surface. Most people today use special dome-shaped covered lights attached to a pole and held just under the water that cast a brilliant light on the normally unseen aquatic life below. Where some have batteries inserted to supply the power, others require motorcycle or automobile batteries for a power source. Walkers generally use smaller motorcycle batteries carried in a backpack to keep their hands free.

For a more advanced approach, boats like Bateman’s are affixed with clamps for the lights that can be raised or lowered into the water to accommodate various depths. Due to the brackish nature of the water around the islands, visibility is highly dependent upon the wind and tide.

Instead of using the boat’s outboard trolling motor, Bateman prefers to use the opposite end of the gig as he slowly poles the boat back and forth through the water’s edge, moving close and away from shore in a zigzag motion. It must be done quietly, he notes.

in and out of the water as they go – and it’s like a warning alarm for the flounder hidden below.

By nature, flounder are a burrowing fish, doing the best to camouflage themselves – not only as a protective mechanism – but as a way to catch their own prey. They lie flat and flap their body until it is almost completely covered in sand, making them difficult for minnows to see and a challenge for humans to catch.

“They’re hard to see, even on a good night,” said Bateman. “I often compare them to those highway patrol officers who hide under the overpasses or the side of the highway by the billboards or bushes who you can’t see until you’re right up to him and it’s too late,” Bateman laughs. “Flounder can be that hard to see. It definitely takes practice.”

A good dose of patience is also helpful. While it can initially be pretty amazing what you see with the underwater lights – sting rays, snakes, eels, minnows, conch shells, oyster beds, gar fish – the light can also begin to play tricks on your eyes as you focus through ripples that coat the water’s surface to the sandy bottom. In a Magic Eye poster fashion, your eyes have to focus in a certain way and maintain it.

“After hours on the water you can think you see things that aren’t there and completely miss things that are,” said Bateman. “Visibility changes a lot with the tide and the wind. For best results you really want a calm evening so you can see deeper into the water. And depending upon where you fish, you want the tide to be at a different level. Sometimes it’s a lot easier than other times.”

When a fish is spotted, it takes a steady hand, a quick stroke and good aim.

It’s as basic as fishing can be; you, a weapon and the fish. If you miss, nobody else is to blame – no faulty lure or bent hook is responsible. It’s man against nature in the most natural and primitive way. You know as you hold the gig in your hand that this is how dinner was brought to the table since man first found sea life.

Now, centuries into the New World, you are one quick, well-lined jab away from dinner – and there’s something 38

very satisfying in knowing that.

Keep in mind, like all fishing, there are regulations that apply to help maintain the population. In North Carolina, recreational fishermen can catch up to 8 flounder per day, while there are no limits for commercial fishermen. Throughout the state, flounder caught must be 14-15 inches, with 15 inches being the limit in most of Carteret County.

When fishing with a charter service such as Bateman’s, individuals are not required to have a recreational license of their own.

“It’s a lot of work,” Bateman said.

“But it’s an affordable way to fish and it can be really relaxing and peaceful communing with nature at this level. I’m out here most nights and I really enjoy it.”

Of course, for anyone who has sat down to dine on a plate full of flounder, the tender, flaky, white fish is reward enough.

BIG FISH, BIG MONEY, BIG EXCITEMENT...

Billfish Series at Home on Crystal Coast Of all the fishing tournaments held throughout the year, whether it be small groups standing in the surf or fleets of king mackerel fishermen in center-console skiffs, none of them draw as much attention as the Governor’s Cup Billfishing Conservation Series. Comprised of seven tournaments spanning from as far north as the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament in Manteo to as far south as the Cape Fear Blue Marlin Tournament in Wrightsville Beach, the Governor’s Cup brings out the biggest offshore sportfishing boats in a summer-long points battle.

Managed by the NC Department of Marine Fisheries, the series offers points to participating boats for billfish caught and released, and those brought to weigh-ins that meet minimum tournament size requirements. With an emphasis on conservation and releases, fish that do not meet minimum requirements cost the team penalty points.

Point categories begin with the season’s first tournament, the Hatteras Village Offshore Open held May 11-15 and continue until the Pirate’s Cove Tournament held Aug. 9-13. Trophies are given to the points leaders in the Private Boat and Charter Boat categories, while individual awards are given to the outstanding junior boy, junior girl and lady anglers. Additional trophies are given to the largest blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dolphin.

Series tournaments are popular up and down the Carolina Coast but if they had one place to call home it would be the Crystal Coast, which is the main location and weighstation for four of the seven tournaments. Beginning with the Swansboro Rotary Bluewater Fishing Tournament held during Memorial Day weekend, the series reaches full swing in mid-June with the largest of them all, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, followed by the Barta Boys and Girls Club Billfish Tournament and the NC Ducks Unlimited Tag and Release Billfish Tournament.

Big Rock = Big Money Known as the highest paying tournament with an overall purse well over the $1 million mark for 12 consecutive years, Big Rock turns 52 this year with little sign of slowing down.

Held on the Morehead City waterfront June 11-19, Big Rock draws spectators in droves as they clamor for a glimpse of the blue marlin weigh-ins. Weights have spanned a wide range over the years, reaching as much as 831 pounds in 2000, while the 2009 winner Sea Creature took home a top prize of $746,820 with its 466-pounder.

Cup Series, Big Rock also offers gamefish prizes for wahoo, tuna and mahi mahi, as well as its own breakdown of categories such as overall and daily billfish releases and a “winner take all” division with an estimated worth of $75,000.

Tournament week kicks off at the Crystal Coast Civic Center on June 11 with the Lady Angler Event, a party of food and cocktails in preparation for the following day’s Keli Wagner Big Rock Lady Angler Tournament.

Gamefish like dolphin, wahoo and tuna will be brought to Big Rock Landing on Saturday, June 12 as a taste of what’s to come.

The main event begins with fishing Monday morning. While the scales are open from 4-7pm for gamefish weigh-ins, as qualifying blue marlin are hooked and boated they can be brought to the scales at any point in the day. Boys & Girls & Billfish Started as a fundraiser by outdoorsman and host of the Best and Worst of Tred Barta on the Versus Network, the Barta Boys & Girls Club Billfish Tournament set out to raise $1 million for the Boys & Girls Club of Coastal Carolina within 10 years. Now, moving into its seventh year July 1517, this Governor’s Cup tourney is on track with more than $500,000 raised so far.

Set up like other tournaments in the series with points for releases and gamefish, the Barta is unlike others in

the fact that no prize money is awarded to participants and billfish are not to be weighed under any circumstances.

Instead, winners receive trophies so that all money from entry fees can be donated to the event’s cause.

While his health kept him from being at last summer’s event, Barta recently announced on his website that he will be in Beaufort for this year’s tournament, noting that “this tournament means more to me than any other outdoor activity and I believe in what it stands for. My whole life was changed and I am changed because of it.”

Registration begins at 10am on Thursday, July 15 and the opening ceremonies and captain’s party follow that evening. Registration is $800 and fishing runs from 8am-2pm Friday and Saturday. Dinners are slated both 50

Banding Together Coming off one of its best years yet with 83 billfish releases, the NC Ducks Unlimited Band the Billfish Tournament returns for its 22nd year July 2931. Based on the Morehead City waterfront, Band the Billfish benefits wetland habitats in North Carolina and waterfowl breeding areas across North America through Ducks Unlimited’s Sound CARE program.

Competition for a share of the event’s prize money was fierce in 2009, with 46 boats fishing, each averaging 1.8 billfish.

Events kick off Thursday, July 29 with a captain’s party at the Crystal Coast Civic Center from 7-9:30pm, followed by fishing on Friday from 9am to 3pm and Saturday from 8am to 2pm.

Weigh-ins and a weigh-in social held Friday night will take place at Big Rock Landing on the Morehead City parking lot, followed by a winners banquet at the civic center Saturday from 7pm to midnight.
