2010 Season Preview

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK: LADY EAGLES BATTLE YEAR THREE OF DIVISION ONE STATUS a team is more than just playing on the softball diamond, it is becoming a family and building a sense of trust and acceptance among each other. That job is done by the leaders of the team, the captains. This year’s captains are Michelle Ishida, Kristen Schooler and Ashanti Stroud. All of whom are ready for a winning season. With a 99 percent division one schedule last year, the Lady Eagles had to face the challenge of competing against some tough division one programs. It was a year that tested their passion, commitment and determination. It was a year that built strength and courage. It only made them stronger. This year will be no different as NCCU soars into yet another challenging and competitive season as they battle several top softball programs.

2010 Lady Eagles Softball

The North Carolina Central University softball team enters its third year of division one status, which means higher stakes and higher measures. Being division one is more than just a tougher schedule, it is a fight to be the best, not only in the conference, but in the nation. For NCCU, conference play doesn’t exist and neither does battling for a championship title, but for NCCU, division one is everything. It is a chance compete against the best, a chance to battle for the best student-athletes and a chance to one day be a top tier softball program.

PITCHERS NCCU returns two pitchers from last year’s squad as seniors Kristen Schooler and Michelle Ishida return to the mound for the 2010 season. Schooler returns as the Lady Eagles’ starting pitcher after starting 21 games last year and finishing with an 11.93 earned run average. She pitched 134.1 innings and went 1-20 as a junior and will take on the lead role for NCCU this season. Her competitiveness and hard work should help the Lady Eagles compete at the division one level as they look to improve their pitching game this season.

Head coach Mike Charlton is in his third year at the helm of the Lady Eagle softball program and has been there to experience the change. From day one, he has looked to bring in the best student-athletes and has fought to make the Lady Eagle team competitive. This season is no different as Charlton and his coaching staff look to compete at the highest level in division one softball and bring more excitement and enthusiasm to the field.

Ishida will contribute in the circle as well after starting in 17 games last season and notching an ERA of 11.63. She is a very versatile student-athlete that can contribute in just about every spot on the field. She was the winning pitcher in four of NCCU’s five victories last season and finished with a 4-13 record. Her talent and determination will be key for the Lady Eagles this season as they look to add more variety on the mound.

The 2010 team is young but full of potential and excitement. This year’s squad is made up of three seniors, one junior, five sophomores and eight freshmen. With three seniors leading the way, the Lady Eagle youth will have great leadership and a chance to follow the foundation that was laid from the start of division one competition.

The Lady Eagles will have a five-man pitching staff this season and will look for all five student-athletes to contribute in the rotation as they continue to strive to the division one level. Joining Schooler and Ishida in the stable are newcomers Shamika Chavis-Hodge, Aurora Baker and Kayla McPeek.

“All of our seniors have been here in the three years that I have been here, and so they have gone through the transition with me,” said Charlton. “They have a really good idea of what I expect from the team, in terms of attitude, focus and participation, so each of them in their own way is helping to pull the team in that direction and move us in the right spot. I look for each of them to step up and make their senior year a memorable one.”

“We have five pitchers in our stable this year and we are going to try to work them all around and try to match them up with teams to try to find the best matchup,” added Charlton. “All of our pitchers will work together in rotations to come in and help provide us with what we need.” Shamika Chavis-Hodge is a local standout from Knightdale, N.C., where she played for Enloe High School. She was a three-time All-Conference selection and will be a great asset to the pitching staff as she has worked hard in preseason to

and will be a great teacher. Following in Searls’ cleats, Edwards will be able to provide the Lady Eagles with a talented alternative. She has worked hard in preseason to be a valuable catcher for the NCCU team as she looks to provide assistance wherever it is needed.

INFIELD The Lady Eagle infield will look a little different this season as several new faces will enter the starting rotation. With the departure of third baseman Sophia Blue, NCCU will have a huge gap to fill at the third base position and throughout the infield as they look to step up their defensive efforts. Returning in the infield this season are Jessica Refojo and Michelle Ishida. Refojo will return as the infield leader as she returns as the Lady Eagles’ shortstop. She comes off a freshman campaign, where she started all 48 games for NCCU. The Miami, Fla. native hit .254 on the season with four doubles, two triples and 18 RBIs.

Baker is the most experienced newcomer that the Lady Eagles have this season. A transfer from North Carolina A&T State University, Baker brings speed and strength on the mound. She notched an 8.40 ERA in 3.1 innings pitched to record a 0-1 record as an Aggie. The Wake Forest, N.C. native is expected to jump right into the rotation and make an immediate impact for NCCU this season.

Contributing in the infield this season will be newcomers Kaitlin Kramer, Trishann Hayes and Tiffany McCreary. Kramer is expected to make an immediate impact for the Lady Eagles on defense as she brings speed and athleticism to a team that is striving to become a competitive division one program. She hails from Mechanicsburg, Pa., where she attended Cumberland Valley High School. She was a twotime First Team Mid-Penn All-Star and was a Second Team Mid-Penn All-Star during her freshman campaign.

McPeek will be a surprise to many people this season. Standing at 5-3, she doesn’t look very strong, but she has the speed and the strength to surprise anyone in the batter’s box. She hails from Westerville, Ohio, where she attended Thomas Worthington High School. She earned several athletic accolades and looks to continue her success on the mound this season as she looks to earn a spot in the rotation. “It is not a thing where one person is going to start here or there,” continued Charlton. “We are going to try to look at teams and see who we are playing and try to match up the best we can with our pitching staff.” CATCHERS Behind the plate won’t look much different for the Lady Eagles this season as sophomore Andrea Searls will anchor the catching duties. She started 46 games behind the plate for the Lady Eagles, hit .278, had four doubles, one triple and 14 RBIs. Defensively, she had 99 putouts and just seven errors and seven passed balls.

Andrea Searls

Backing her up will be 5-5 freshman Shakemia Edwards, who hails from Winterville, N.C. Edwards will have a great teacher in Searls, who has full experience behind the plate

Ishida will take over the duties at first base when she is not leading the way on the mound. The senior first baseman looks to close out her senior season as a memorable one. She started all 48 games for the Lady Eagles last season, where she notched a .225 batting average. She tallied four doubles and 14 RBIs, while standing second in stolen bases with 10. Her speed and quickness will be an asset to NCCU in the field and on the bases.

prepare for a successful freshman campaign.

even behind the plate. She started all 48 games for the Lady Eagles last season and notched a .246 batting average. Defensively, she had 55 putouts and just six errors. Franklin, one of three seniors on this year’s squad, brings three years of experience to a team that is young and thirsty for knowledge. She adds strength to the outfield and will continue her role as a top offensive player. She notched a .283 batting average with three doubles, three triples and 18 RBIs. Defensively, she had 33 putouts and just two errors. Her senior leadership will help mold the young talent that will follow. Nadia Moreta and Andrea Wheeler join Stroud and Franklin as returners in the outfield. Neither one saw much playing time last season, but they have both worked hard during preseason training and have improved on offense and defense. They may not be leaders in the outfield, but they each have a year of experience behind them and can help the freshmen adjust to playing softball on the collegiate level.

2010 Lady Eagles Softball

Jessica Refojo Hayes is new to the softball field, but is a familiar face to Lady Eagle softball fans as she was a member of the Lady Eagle softball team last year, but was unable to step foot on the field. This season, Hayes will be able to show her talent as she adds size and strength in the infield. She is expected to jump in and be a contributor on offense for NCCU this season and she looks to build a solid foundation in the infield.

Rounding out the outfield are freshmen Nadia Jefferies and Mae’Risha Watts. Jefferies is a local standout from Garner, N.C., where she attended Garner Magnet High School. She was an All-Conference and All-State player while at Garner and earned a Player of the Year honor. She is one freshman that the softball staff is excited about and looks to make an immediate impact this season. Her speed and aggressiveness will make her successful during her freshman season.

“We are definitely excited to have Trishann on the field this season, knowing that she has been here a year and couldn’t play last season,” said Charlton. “Getting her on the field this year is going to be a good asset for us. You will definitely see Trishann and we expect her to make a really big impact.”

“Nadia will make a great impact on defense for us this season,” added Charlton. “You will definitely see her make a big impact this season. Her speed and her aggressive attitude will be a great asset to this year’s team.”

McCreary is a local talent that will add variety in the infield. She brings heart and a great work ethic to this NCCU team. She is from Holly Springs, N.C., where she attended the North Carolina School of Science and Math. The local native will be a great asset on the field and in the classroom as she is a Chancellor’s Scholar. OUTFIELD Looking out into the outfield will not be much of a surprise as four student-athletes return to the outfield this season, including one of this year’s captains Ashanti Stroud. Joining Stroud as a leader in the outfield is senior Desanbra Franklin. Both will bring leadership and experience to the outfield as they look to build on their successes from last year as the Lady Eagles continue to transition to the division one level.

Ashanti Stroud

Stroud will anchor the outfield. Her primary position is in the outfield, but her versatility allows her to contribute significantly anywhere on the field. She can play anywhere,

8

Watts rounds out the Lady Eagle outfield. Her strength and ability in the outfield will provide athleticism and versatility in the outfield. She hails from Whiteville, N.C., where she attended Whiteville High School. Watts has a great work ethic and will work hard this season to make a contribution for the Lady Eagles.

with teams that they are compatible with.” CONCLUSION This season, the Lady Eagles will have a smaller and younger group as they enter their third year of division one competition. With three seniors, one junior, five sophomores and eight freshmen, NCCU will have to look to their young talent to contribute and make an impact this season. The Lady Eagles are looking to strive for success and become a competitor at the division one ranks. That success starts with recruits and Charlton’s program has brought in the young talent needed to set a solid foundation for success at the next level.

SCHEDULE The Lady Eagles will face a tough schedule this season as they enter their third year of transition to division one. The 2010 schedule features four tournaments, 12 home dates and six road trips. One of the highlights of this year’s schedule is a matchup with neighbor North Carolina State and a trip to Texas Tech. With only three division two teams on the schedule, NCCU will compete with a mostly division one schedule.

“All the kids that are coming in this year are going to add to us defensively and offensively, but the greatest impact that you are going to see from them is on the defensive side of the ball,” said Charlton. “We are looking for all of our newcomers at any point in time to have a breakout season and move forward. When you bring in your Kaitlin Kramers and your Nadia Jefferies, who are going to bring speed to the game and aggressive attitudes, it helps build your program and make your program more competitive.”

“We get a pretty well-rounded schedule this year,” continued Charlton. “This year, we have three division two teams, two from the CIAA and Barton, but we have also increased the talent level in which we play on the division one level. We kind of added some wrinkles with Texas Tech and N.C. State, but it will give the girls a chance to see some big time softball.”

“All of our freshmen can come in and make an impact, but it is just going to be them finding their feet and finding their niche, and understanding that they don’t have to do too much right now, but handle their job responsibilities. I think all of them will do fine as they get their feet wet and get use to the college game.”

“The kids are kind of use to playing a full division one schedule already,” stated Charlton. “They should be able to handle that a little bit easier as they have a really good feel of division one competition. This year, they get the opportunity to see some big time softball, but also play and match up

With such a young team, NCCU’s youth will be looked to fill in the gaps when needed and will improve and progress as the season moves on. This year’s team has increased in talent, hard work and knowledge of the game of softball. Each year, things can only get better and this year will be one step closer to a better tomorrow.

Aside from a trips to schools, such as N.C. State and Texas Tech, the Lady Eagles will participate in four tournaments, one of which they will host. Many of this year’s opponents are from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), a conference where NCCU has received membership starting in July 2010. This year’s schedule will be another step closer to full division one competition.

Prior to joining the NCCU family, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University, which enrolls approximately 100,000 students on eight campuses. In his role as IU’s vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs, Nelms was responsible for a combination of duties on the Bloomington campus and systemwide that spanned university planning, institutional research and effectiveness, enrollment management, student affairs, academic support services, K-12 outreach initiatives, student retention, honors programs, and diversity and equity efforts. In September 2001, TIME magazine named IU’s Bloomington campus the number-one student-centered research university in the nation. Many of the programs cited by TIME were under Nelms’ oversight and direction. A native of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs (1971) and a doctoral degree in higher education administration (1977) from Indiana University. Early in his career, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks as associate dean for Student Development at Earlham College in Indiana (19731977), associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at the UAPB (1977-1978), associate dean for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-1984) and vice president for Student Services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984- 1987). In 1987, Nelms began a seven-year tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, a commuter campus serving east-central Indiana. During his tenure there, the campus was the fastest-growing college in the State of Indiana. In 1994, Nelms was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF), an urban campus that enrolls over 6,500 students and offers a full spectrum of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Before being recruited to Indiana University in 1998, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline, and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF. A former American Council on Education Fellow and Ford Fellow, Nelms holds honorary degrees from Earlham College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to education and service to students, including the Benjamin Hooks Award for Meritorious Achievement from the Gary (IN) branch of the NAACP, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Indiana University,

the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Education, the President’s Medal from the University of Michigan, and the State of Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash—the highest civilian award bestowed by the governor. Nelms is married to Jeanetta Sherrod Nelms. They have one son, Rashad, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School who serves as a policy officer with the United Nations World Food Programme.

Ingrid wicker-McCree, Ed.D Director of Athletics Second Year Durham, N.C. George Washington, 1989

Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D., was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008 after holding the interim position for five months.

AD

She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008.

Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008.

Wicker-McCree, who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07.

She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994.

Now entering her 16th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs.

Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia (11), Quinton (8) and Sydney (5).

Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team. A native of Durham and a graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball and track and field. She continued her volleyball playing career as a student-athlete at George Washington University.

In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006.

Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14).

North Carolina Central University is competing in its third year of reclassification as an NCAA Division I institution (Football Championship Subdivision), and the Eagles will be playing as an independent during the 2008-09 athletics campaign. Fourteen men’s and women’s sports teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition at the Division I-FCS level. Men’s intercollegiate teams include football, basketball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and cross country. Women’s intercollegiate teams include basketball, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, softball, bowling and cross country. 2007 CIAA Women’s Basketball Champions

NCCU’s athletic programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years, headlined by the 1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship. NCCU’s commitment to a balanced athletic program, providing equitable resources to all of its sports teams, is abundantly apparent. In five of the last eight years in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), NCCU claimed the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women’s program in the conference.

In 2007-08, NCCU’s first season of Division I (FCS) competition, the women’s volleyball team kicked off the Division I era with a dramatic, come-from-behind win over N.C. State, then cruised to 21 victories, all against Division I opponents. The football team finished its first Division I season with a 6-4 record, the Eagles fourth straight winning season. The men’s and women’s cross country teams each won four of their seven events. The men’s basketball team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, while traveling more than 22,000 miles and playing in 13 different states. The squad earned a road victory over the eventual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions and capped the season with a win over rival Winston-Salem State University at the MEAC Tournament. Finally, the track and field program won two events at the prestigious Penn Relays and qualified two student-athletes for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston. In 2006-07, NCCU’s final season in the NCAA Division II, the Eagles placed 24th in the final standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup, the prestigious award presented annually to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. In 2006-07, NCCU won four CIAA team championships and participated in nine NCAA Division II Championship events.

Heading the charge of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, who lifted the Eagle track & field program to international prominence during his unprecedented tenure as head coach at NCCU. Under Walker’s reign, the Eagles produced 30 national titles, 77 All-Americans, and eight Olympic medalists. Legendary basketball practitioner, John B. McLendon, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, established a remarkable record of 239-68 (.779) as an Eagle head coach from 1940 to 1952. A student of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, McLendon is credited with the development of the zone press, fast break and four corners offense. Boston Celtics great Sam Jones, a studentathlete under McLendon and a fellow Hall-

of-Famer, became the first black player to be drafted in the first round after scoring a record 1,745 points during his stellar NCCU career. Internationally-renowned artist, Ernie Barnes - best-known for his famous paintings seen on the 1970s sitcom “Good Times” - played football for the NCCU prior to a professional gridiron career with the Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. The LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex houses a multi-purpose gymnasium, Olympic-sized swimming and diving pool, athletic training facilities, strength and fitness center, and much more. O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium hosts NCCU football action for a capacity crowd of 10,000 dedicated Eagle fans. In mid-November, McLendon-McDougald Gym lights-up with men’s and women’s basketball excitement.

The 1989 men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating Southeast Missouri State 73-46 in the title game on March 25, 1989. The Eagles also captured an NCAA Division II Regional Championship in 1993.

institute offers new bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmaceutical science. These programs provide students with core scientific competencies in biology or chemistry as well as hands-on laboratory practice. In addition, there are seminar courses in drug development operations, FDA regulations, quality assurance and control, and intellectual property and patent law. NCCU’s BRITE is an important part of the statewide initiative to make North Carolina a premiere provider of skilled workers for the biotechnology industry.

History In 1910, Dr. James E. Shepard envisioned and founded a school that prepared African American adults for leadership roles in our nation’s communities. Founded as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) became the nation’s first state-supported historically black liberal arts college. In 1923, the National Training School became the state-supported Durham State Normal School, devoted to “the training of teachers for the Colored Public Schools of North Carolina.” Two years later, Dr. Shepard was able to persuade the General Assembly to take a revolutionary step, making the institution a liberal arts college and naming it North Carolina College for Negroes in 1925. The School of Law was established in 1940 and the School of Library Science in 1941. By the time of Dr. Shepard’s death on October 6, 1947, the institution that had become North Carolina College at Durham was fully-accredited, highly respected and had become the alma mater of a growing list of distinguished alumni. Today, under the leadership of Chancellor Charlie Nelms, NCCU is a comprehensive university offering more than 100 bachelor’s degrees in various disciplines, 40 master’s degree programs and three professional degrees in law. The university reaches out to all racial and ethnic groups, and has a diverse student population of more than 8,000. New Initiatives NCCU is on the cutting edge with its Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise known as BRITE. The

The School of Law has won kudos for providing top-notch legal education. According to Vault, Inc., a publishing firm that researches and collects data on diverse professions, the law school has not received the acknowledgment it is due. Vault surveyed 512 recruiters who identified 25 “underrated” schools, and the NCCU School of Law was ranked at number 14. NCCU and the African American Jazz Caucus are partnering to form the NCCU/AAJC Jazz Research Institute (NAJRI) in an effort to preserve the integrity of jazz as an African American art form. One of the functions of the Institute will be to address the critical artistic and economic situation of jazz in the African American community as well as develop other initiatives such as a North Carolina Hall of Fame dedicated to highlighting the work of jazz artists from North Carolina. In an effort to bring more study abroad options to students, NCCU has been accepted as a member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a nonprofit membership organization that provides affordable and diverse study abroad and exchange opportunities to students around the world. NCCU is only one of four historically black college or university in the ISEP network. ISEP membership makes it possible for NCCU students to study abroad at over 135 different universities in 39 countries. NCCU is the first historically black institution in the nation to have an athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Built upon the motto of Truth and Service, NCCU is a university committed to preparing and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to compete in the global marketplace.

North carolina central university joins the mEAC

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced the addition of North Carolina Central University to the conference as its 13th member, as voted on by the conference’s Council of Chief Executive Officers (CCEOs), effective July 1, 2010.

“I am elated to have such an outstanding academic institution as North Carolina Central to return to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. “I would like to commend Chancellor Nelms, Dr. WickerMcCree, and the entire NCCU family for all their continued hard work as they make the transition from Division II to Division I.” Commissioner Thomas added, “The addition of NCCU keeps us in compliance with our long range strategic plan of adding up to 14 members. NCCU is a perfect fit for the MEAC.” NCCU is in the third year of its reclassification from NCAA Division II to Division I. NCCU is one of seven founding member institutions of the MEAC. The Eagles withdrew from the conference in 1979, opting to remain a Division II member when the conference reclassified to Division I. From 1979-2007, NCCU competed in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). “This is a significant milestone in North Carolina Central University’s transition to Division I,” said NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms. “Membership in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is a win-win proposition for our student-athletes, alumni and fans -- indeed, all our university constituents.” “This is wonderful news for North Carolina Central University, but most importantly for our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” said NCCU Director of Athletics, Dr. Ingrid WickerMcCree. “The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is a fantastic conference with highly competitive academic and athletic institutions. For NCCU to return to the MEAC and be part of its rich history is a tremendous step for our athletics program. We now have a place to call home.”

About the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference: The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is in its 40th year of operation heading into the 2009-2010 academic school year. Housed in the Armada Hoffler Tower at Town Center of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the MEAC is made up of 12 outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University and WinstonSalem State University. History In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals. After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a compact group of educational institutions of high academic standards and with a sound philosophy of cocurricular activities. The league agreed to seek Division I status for its sports. The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in football in 1971. The conference sponsors 15 sports and currently automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball (since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994).
